I remember two period of silence in prayer, one when the imam said the takbir; and one when he finished reciting the Fatihah and the surah when he was about to bow. But Imran ibn Husayn took it as something strange. So they wrote about it to Ubayy (ibn Ka'b) in Medina. He verified the statement of Samurah. Abu Dawud said: Humaid also narrated in this tradition the words "and one period silence when he finished the recitation (of the Qur'an)"

سَمُرَةُ حَفِظْتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ سَكْتَةً إِذَا كَبَّرَ الإِمَامُ حَتَّى يَقْرَأَ وَسَكْتَةً إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ فَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ وَسُورَةٍ عِنْدَ الرُّكُوعِ قَالَ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ فَكَتَبُوا فِي ذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى أُبَىٍّ فَصَدَّقَ سَمُرَةَ

Samurah ibn Jundub and Imran ibn Husayn had a discussion (about the periods of silence in prayer). Samurah then said that he remembered two periods of silence from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; one when he uttered the takbir and the other when he finished reciting: "Not of those with whom Thou art angry, nor of those who go astray" (i.7). Samurah remembered that, but Imran ibn Husayn rejected it. Then they wrote about it to Ubayy ibn Ka'b. He wrote a letter to them and gave a reply to them that Samurah remembered correctly.

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَكْتَتَيْنِ سَكْتَةً إِذَا كَبَّرَ وَسَكْتَةً إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ قِرَاءَةِ { غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ الضَّالِّينَ } فَحَفِظَ ذَلِكَ سَمُرَةُ وَأَنْكَرَ عَلَيْهِ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ فَكَتَبَا فِي ذَلِكَ إِلَى أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَكَانَ فِي كِتَابِهِ إِلَيْهِمَا أَوْ فِي رَدِّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا أَنَّ سَمُرَةَ قَدْ حَفِظَ

“I memorized two pauses in the prayer, a pause before reciting and a pause when bowing. ‘Imran bin Husain denied that, so they wrote to Al-Madinah, to Ubayy bin Ka’b, and he said that Samurah was speaking the truth.”

سَمُرَةُ حَفِظْتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ سَكْتَةً قَبْلَ الْقِرَاءَةِ وَسَكْتَةً عِنْدَ الرُّكُوعِ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ الْحُصَيْنِ فَكَتَبُوا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَصَدَّقَ سَمُرَةَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to remain silent when he entered prayer and when he finished reciting. Imran ibn Husayn disapproved of this and they wrote to Ubay ibn Ka'b. He replied to them saying that Samurah was telling the truth. Abu Muhammad says Qatadah used to say three silences, and in the raised narration, there are two silences.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْكُتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ فَكَتَبُوا إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ قَدْ صَدَقَ سَمُرَةُ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ كَانَ قَتَادَةُ يَقُولُ ثَلَاثُ سَكَتَاتٍ وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ الْمَرْفُوعِ سَكْتَتَانِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had two silent pauses in his prayers, and Imran ibn Husain said, "I do not know what they are for from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So they wrote to Ubay ibn Ka'b asking him about it, and Ubay wrote back, "Indeed, Samurah had memorized it."

كَانَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَكْتَتَانِ فِي صَلَاتِهِ وَقَالَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ أَنَا مَا أَحْفَظُهُمَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَتَبُوا فِي ذَلِكَ إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُونَهُ عَنْهُ فَكَتَبَ أُبَيٌّ إِنَّ سَمُرَةَ قَدْ حَفِظَ

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , had two pauses during his prayer. One pause when he started the prayer and another pause before he bowed after completing the second Surah. This was mentioned to Imran ibn Husayn, and he said, "Samarah has lied." So he wrote about it to Medina to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and he said, "Samarah has spoken the truth.""

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَتْ لَهُ سَكْتَتَانِ سَكْتَةٌ حِينَ يَفْتَتِحُ الصَّلَاةَ وَسَكْتَةٌ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ السُّورَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِعِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ فَقَالَ كَذَبَ سَمُرَةُ فَكَتَبَ فِي ذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ سَمُرَةُ

[AI] "That the Prophet ﷺ used to remain silent twice, when he entered into prayer and when he finished reciting. Imran ibn Husain condemned this, so they wrote to Ubay ibn Ka'b to ask him about it. He responded that Samurah told the truth."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْكُتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ إِذَادَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ فَكَتَبُوا إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُونَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَكَتَبَ أَنْ صَدَقَ سَمُرَةُ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْكُتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ وَكَتَبُوا إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ صَدَقَ سَمُرَةُ

[AI] He used to remain silent for a while after he finished praying with them. And when he recited the verse "Not the path of those who have evoked [Your] anger" (Al-Fatiha 7), he remained silent for a short moment. They objected to this, so he wrote to Ubay ibn Ka'b and Ubay wrote back to them that what Samurah did was correct.

أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى بِهِمْ سَكَتَ سَكْتَتَيْنِ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ وَإِذَا قَالَ {وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ} [الفاتحة 7] سَكَتَ أَيْضًا هُنَيَّةً فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ أُبَيٌّ أَنَّ الْأَمْرَ كَمَا صَنَعَ سَمُرَةُ

[AI] About the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I mentioned that to Imran ibn Husayn and he said, "We learned the silent pauses, so we wrote to Ubayy ibn Ka'b in Al Madinah and he wrote to me that Samurah has memorized them," Said said. So we asked Qatadah, "What are these silent pauses?" He said, "When he enters into his prayer and when he finishes reciting."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ» فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ فَقَالَ حَفِظْنَا سَكْتَةً فَكَتَبْنَا إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّ سَمُرَةَ قَدْ حَفِظَ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ فَقُلْنَا لِقَتَادَةَ وَمَا هَاتَانِ السَّكْتَتَانِ؟ قَالَ «إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ وَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ»

قَالَ كَانَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَكْتَتَانِ سَكْتَةٌ إِذَا ابْتَدَأَ الصَّلاةَ وَسَكْتَةٌ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ قِرَاءَتِهِ وَرَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ سَعِيد بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبة عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَن الْحَسَنِ عَنْ سَمُرة فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ عِمْرَانُ قَالَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَكَتَبَ بِصِدْقِ سَمُرَةَ

[AI] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , there was a pause when he would make takbeer (say "Allahu Akbar") and a pause when he finished reciting the Surah. Imran bin Husain was disturbed by this, so they wrote to Ubay bin Ka'b about it. Ubay wrote back, confirming that Samurah had indeed memorized the narration from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .

[AI] Narrated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding two silent pauses: a pause when starting the takbir and a pause when finishing the recitation of the verse "Not the path of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray." [AI] Samurah said, "I have memorized two pauses during prayer: a pause when the imam says the takbir until he recites, and a pause when he completes the Fatiha and a surah when bowing." Imran ibn Husayn objected to this, and they wrote to Ubayy in Medina about it. Ubayy confirmed Samurah's statement, and it is also said that Hushaym narrated from Yunus that when the imam recites {not those who have gone astray} [Al-Fatiha 7], he pauses without mentioning the surah. Humayd al-Tawil narrated from Hasan that there is a pause when one finishes recitation. Ash'ath narrated from Hasan that there is a pause after finishing all recitation. It is possible that this interpretation came from a narration from Hasan; hence the disagreement and this indicates it.

قَالَ سَمُرَةُ حَفِظْتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ سَكْتَةً إِذَا كَبَّرَ الْإِمَامُ حَتَّى يَقْرَأَ وَسَكْتَةً إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ فَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ وَسُورَةٍ عِنْدَ الرُّكُوعِ قَالَ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ فَكَتَبُوا فِي ذَلِكَ إِلَى أُبَيٍّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَدَّقَ سَمُرَةَ وَقِيلَ عَنْ هُشَيْمٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ وَإِذَا قَرَأَ {وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ} [الفاتحة 7] سَكَتَ سَكْتَةً وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ السُّورَةَ وَقَالَ حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَسَكْتَةً إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ وَقَالَ أَشْعَثُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ كُلِّهَا وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ هَذَا التَّفْسِيرُ وَقَعَ مِنْ رِوَايَةٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ؛ فَلِذَلِكَ اخْتَلَفُوا وَيَدُلُّ عَلَيْهِ
