[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , fought in fifteen battles. Waki' narrated to us, from Fitr, from Saad ibn Ubaydah, from Al-Bara' ibn Azib, that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to a man: "When you go to your bed, purified, say: O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, set my face towards You, entrusted my affairs to You, out of fear and desire for You. There is no place of safety and escape from You except with You. I believe in the Book You have revealed and in the Prophet You have sent. If you take my soul during my sleep, forgive it, and if you keep it alive after waking up, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants. When the man woke up, he followed the Prophet's instructions and he said: I have achieved a lot of goodness." Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) said: My father heard this narration from Saad ibn Ubaydah, who heard it from Al-Bara' ibn Azib.

Dua before going to sleep entrusting yourself to Allah

bukhari:247Muḥammad b. Muqātil > ʿAbdullāh > Sufyān > Manṣūr > Saʿd b. ʿUbaydah > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib

The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie or your right side and say:

allāhumma aslamtu wajhī ilayka, wa-fawwaḍtu amrī ilayka, wa-aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayka, raghbatan wa-rahbatan ilayka, lā maljaʾa wa-lā manjā minka illā ilayka. allāhumma āmantu bi-kitābika alladhī anzalta, wa-bi-nabiyyika alladhī arsalta.

(O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and sought refuge with You, turning to You in hope and fear. There is no refuge and no escape from You except toward You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).

Then if you die on that very night, you will die with faith (i.e. or the religion of Islam). Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep)."

I repeated it before the Prophet ﷺ and when I reached "O Allah I believe in Your Book which You have revealed," I said, "wa-rasūlika" (and your Prophet). The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, (but say): 'wa-nabiyika alladhī arsalta" (Your Prophet whom You have sent), instead.

Importance of perfecting rukūʿ (bowing) and sujūd (prostration)

bukhari:791Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān > Zayd b. Wahb

Ḥudhayfah saw a person who was not bowing and prostrating perfectly ˹in prayer˺. He said to him, "You have not prayed; and if you should die you would die on a fiṭrah (natural disposition) other than that of the fiṭrah of Muhammad ﷺ."

bukhari:808al-Ṣalt b. Muḥammad > Mahdī > Wāṣil > Abū Wāʾil

Hudhaifa said, "I saw a person not performing his bowing and prostrations perfectly. When he completed the prayer, I told him that he had not prayed." I think that Hudhaifa added (i.e. said to the man), "Had you died, you would have died on a tradition other than that of the Prophet ﷺ Muhammad."

The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said to me: When you go to your bed, perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, and then lie on your right side and say: O Allah I have handed over my face to thee, entrusted my affairs to thee, and committed my back to thee out of desire for and fear to thee. There is no refuge and no place of safety from thee except by having recource to thee. I believe in Thy Book which Thou hast sent down and in Thy prophet whom thou hast sent down. He said : If you die (that night), you would die in the true religion, and utter these words in the last of that you utter (other prayers). Al-Bara said : I said: I memorise them, and then I repeated, saying “and in Thy Apostle whom Thou hast sent”. He said : No, say : “and in Thy Prophet whom Thou hast sent.

[AI] From the Prophet ﷺ that whenever he lay down on his bed, he would say, "O Allah, I have surrendered my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affair to You, seeking Your pleasure and fearing Your displeasure. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You."
