62. Chapter (1/2)
‘Uqabah bin Amir Al Juhani said “I heard the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ recite when he was on the pulpit “Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power. Beware, strength is shooting, beware strength is shooting, beware strength is shooting.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2514)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Lands will be opened to you, and Allah will suffice you in provisions, so no one should be unable to enjoy themselves with their possessions."
[Machine] "If it were not for a statement that I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I would not have supported him," Al-Harith said. Ibn Shamasa asked, "What is it?" Al-Harith replied, "Whoever learns archery and then abandons it is not one of us, or he has disobeyed."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated to me, or I say to you as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah admits into Paradise by a single arrow three individuals: the maker of the arrow, the one who sharpens it, and the one who shoots it. And throwing an arrow is more beloved to me than riding on a mount. And there are only three things from which there is no diversion from Allah: the training of a man on his horse, the playfulness of his wife, and his shooting with his arrows from his bow. And whoever learns how to shoot and then leaves it, then it is a grace that he has disbelieved in."
[Machine] I heard the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ saying, "Indeed, Allah will enter the three (people) into Jannah with a single arrow, its maker, the one who shoots it, and the one who hands it over."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Shoot and ride. I prefer that you shoot rather than ride. Everything that distracts a man from his duties is futile, except shooting with a bow, training his horse, or playing with his spouse, for these are from the truth. And whoever gives up shooting after having knowledge of it, he has disbelieved in what he knew. This is mentioned in the book of Ibn Yazid. And another person, Abdullah ibn Zaid, said..."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man with a Persian bow, so he said, "Throw it away," and then he pointed to an Arabian bow and said, "With this and the spears of the Qana people, Allah will grant you victory in the lands and help you against your enemies." Muhammad ibn Talhah took sole responsibility for this, and in this chain of narration there is a gap, where it is said that Abdul Rahman ibn Uwaym does not have companionship. It is said about this narration chain as...
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a Persian bow and said, "Cursed, cursed is the one who carries it among you." He pointed towards the Arabic bow and the Qanah spears and said, "Allah will enable you to conquer lands and will grant you victory over your enemies with these." Al-Bukhari said, "The hadith narrated by 'Utba ibn 'Uwaym is not authentic."
[Machine] On the day of Ghadir Khumm, the Prophet ﷺ covered me with a cloak and said, "Indeed, Allah has granted me on the day of Badr and Hunayn with angels who covered me with this cloak. And he said, "Verily, this cloak is a barrier between disbelief and faith." He saw a man throwing with a Persian bow and said, "Throw with it," then he looked at an Arabian bow and said, "Use this and its likeness, and the spears of the Qana, for indeed with these Allah enables you in the territories and supports you in victory." He is the disheveled one, Abu al-Rabi' al-Sammān, and he is not strong. Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash contradicted him. This was narrated by 'Abdullah ibn Busr from 'Abdullah ibn 'Adi from his brother 'Abd al-A'la from the Prophet ﷺ, who said it discontinuously. 'Abdullah ibn Busr is not strong. This was said by Abu Dawud al-Sijistani and others.
[Machine] And the Arabic bow, when its string is broken, it had a stick with which it would be bent. He said, they also had wooden spears, so when they stabbed with them, the wounded person would take it and break it. So he commanded them with the spears made of reed so that when a man stabbed, the wounded person would take it, it would bend and not break. And it was carried from Bahrain.
[Machine] They used to argue about various matters, but then an arrow from the west came and struck a young boy, killing him. The rest of the conversation was mentioned by Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan who reported it from Ahmad ibn Ubayd, narrated by Muhammad ibn Ribh al-Bazzaz, who heard it from Abu Nuaim, who heard it from Sufyan, who heard it from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Harith ibn Ayyash ibn Abi Rabiah, who heard it from Hakim ibn Hakim ibn Abbad ibn Hunayf, who heard it from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf. He said, "Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to Abu Ubaidah and mentioned it."
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ said, 'My love is incumbent upon whoever seeks to reconcile between two disputing parties with my bow, not with the bow of Kisra.'"
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Everything that is not from the remembrance of Allah is a distraction and amusement, except for four things: walking between the targets, horse riding for training, learning swimming, and playing with one's family.' This was narrated by Ishaq bin Ibrahim Al-Hanzali from Muhammad bin Salama Al-Jazri."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, do children have rights over us, just as we have rights over them?" He replied, "Yes, the rights of the child over the parents are to teach him writing, swimming, and throwing, and to leave him with good morals." This is a weak Hadith narrated by Isa ibn Ibrahim al-Hashimi, from the remaining scholars who consider it to be a weak Hadith, weakened by Yahya ibn Ma'in, al-Bukhari, and others.
62.2 [Machine] Horse Riding for the sake of Allah ﷻ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, or I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Judgment." Sufyan said, and Mujalid added from Ash-Sha'bi, from Urwah Al-Barqi, "Both reward and booty (spoils of war) are mentioned." And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, narrating from Ahmad ibn Shayban, narrating from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from Shabeeb ibn Ghorqadah, from Urwah Al-Barqi, and from Mujalid, from Ash-Sha'bi, from Urwah Al-Barqi who said: "The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the same."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Keeping horses may be a source of reward to some (man), a shelter to another (i.e. means of earning one's living), or a burden to a third. He to whom the horse will be a source of reward is the one who keeps it in Allah's Cause (prepare it for holy battles) and ties it by a long rope in a pasture (or a garden). He will get a reward equal to what its long rope allows it to eat in the pasture or the garden, and if that horse breaks its rope and crosses one or two hills, then all its footsteps and its dung will be counted as good deeds for its owner; and if it passes by a river and drinks from it, then that will also be regarded as a good deed for its owner even if he has had no intention of watering it then. Horses are a shelter from poverty to the second person who keeps horses for earning his living so as not to ask others, and at the same time he gives Allah's right (i.e. rakʿat) (from the wealth he earns through using them in trading etc.,) and does not overburden them. He who keeps horses just out of pride and for showing off and as a means of harming the Muslims, his horses will be a source of sins to him." When Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about donkeys, he replied, "Nothing particular was revealed to me regarding them except the general unique verse which is applicable to everything: "Whoever does goodness equal to the weight of an atom (or small ant) shall see it (its reward) on the Day of Resurrection." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2371)
[Machine] Narrated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, who was informed by Abu Muhammad Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Halim, who was narrated by Abu Al-Muwwajih, who was narrated by Abdan, who was informed by Abdullah, who was informed by Talhah ibn Abi Saeed that he heard Sa'id Al-Maqburi saying that he heard Abu Hurairah saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever withholds a horse in the cause of Allah, believing in Allah and affirming His promise, his stomach, provision, urine, and manure will be counted as good deeds on the Day of Judgment." According to another narration by Ibn Wahb: "believing in Allah and affirming the promise of Allah."

The Prophet ﷺ said: Wagers are allowed only for racing camels, or horses or shooting arrows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2574)

The Prophet ﷺ said: Wagers are allowed only for racing camels, or horses or shooting arrows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2574)
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ said, 'There is no superiority except in a thoroughbred horse or a good pair of shoes.' Al-Bukhari mentioned in his history that 'Abdur-Rahman ibn Shaybah told me that Ibn Abi Al-Fudayk informed him, mentioning the hadith of 'Abbad ibn Abi Saleh, and he said, 'There is no superiority except in a sword, a thoroughbred horse, or a good pair of shoes.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no preeminence except in a pair of sandals or a hoof." Muhammad ibn Amr said, "They say or a sword followed by Yazid ibn Harun." It is also mentioned from Abu Abdullah, the master of the Jundabians, from Abu Hurairah with a similar meaning.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ rode the horse that was prepared for him from Al-Hafya to Thaniyat Al-Wada', and he rode the horse that was not prepared for him from Thaniyat to Masjid Bani Zuraiq. And Ibn Umar was among those who rode ahead of him, narrating a hadith from Yahya.
"The Messenger of Allah had a she-camel called Al-'Adba' which could not be beaten. One day a Bedouin came on a riding-camel and beat her (in a race). The Muslims were upset by that, and when he saw the expressions on their faces they said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Al-'Adba' has been beaten.' He said: 'It is a right upon Allah that nothing is raised in this world except He lowers it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3588)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by some people from the tribe of Aslam practicing archery. He said, "O children of Ishmael! Throw (arrows), for your father was an archer. I am on the side of Bani so-andso," meaning one of the two teams. The other team stopped throwing, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "What has happened to them?" They replied, "How shall we throw while you are with Bani so-andso?" He said, "Throw for I am with all of you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3507)

[Machine] While the Habasha (Ethiopians) were playing near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with their spears, Umar entered and leaned towards the rocks. They threw stones at him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Leave them, Umar."
62.4 [Machine] What was in the competition with the enemy?
[Machine] "We participated in a raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he mentioned a statement. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ walked ahead of me, and I followed him on the back of the horse. When we approached Madinah, while we were moving forward, there was a man from the Ansar who was not known for his speed. He kept saying, 'Is there anyone who can compete with me to reach Madinah?' He repeated this several times. When I heard his words, I said to him, 'Are you not willing to honor a noble person and not fear a person of noble descent?' He said, 'Only if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permits you.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you. Please allow me so that I can compete with him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If you wish.' So, I spurred my horse and raced ahead, surpassing him with one or two throes. When I caught up with him, I struck him between his shoulders and said, 'I have surpassed you, by Allah!' He said, 'I think you are right.' Then, I raced him to Madinah."
[Machine] She was with the Prophet ﷺ on a trip while she was a servant girl. He said to his companions, "Go ahead," so they went ahead. Then he said, "Come forward, let me race you." So, I raced him and I outran him on my feet. When it was later, I went out with him on a trip, and he said to his companions, "Go ahead," so they went ahead. Then he said, "Come forward, let me race you." And I forgot the previous incident, and I had meat with me, so I said, "How can I race you, O Messenger of Allah, while I am in this state?" He said, "You will do it." So, I raced him and he outran me. Then he said, "This is for that previous race."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was on a journey, and I raced ahead of him on foot. When I picked up the meat, I raced ahead of him and he raced ahead of me. He said, "This is in return for that race." This narration was also reported by Abu Usama from Hisham from a man from Abu Salama from Aisha. It was also narrated by Jarir from Hisham bin Urwa from his father from Aisha.

62.5 [Machine] What came in wrestling
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to the youth of the Ansar every year and anyone who reached them would join. He said, "I was presented for a year, and a boy joined me, but he outmatched me and I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! You have matched him against me, and he has outmatched me. If I had wrestled him, I would have defeated him.' He said, 'Wrestle him, then.' So I wrestled him and defeated him, and I threw him to the ground. Abu Dawud narrated it in Al-Marasil, from Musa ibn Ismail, from Hamad ibn Salamah, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Sa'id ibn Jubair, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Al-Bat-ha and Yazid ibn Rukanah or Rukanah ibn Yazid came to him, accompanied by A'nuz. He said to him, 'O Muhammad! Can you wrestle with me?' He said, 'Do you want to precede me?' He said, 'I have a sheep from my flock, so wrestle with it.' He wrestled it and defeated it, and he took the sheep. Rukanah asked him, 'Do you want to have a return match?' He said, 'Do you want to precede me?' He said, 'There is another one.' He mentioned that repeatedly. He said, 'O Muhammad! I swear by Allah, no one has put me down to the ground, and you are the one who knocks me down.' Then he embraced Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned his sheep to him." Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad informed us, and Abu Al-Husayn Al-Fasawi narrated to us, from Abu Ali Al-Lu'lu'i, from Abu Dawud, and he mentioned it and it is a good narration. And it has been narrated with another chain of transmission, except that it is weak. And Allah knows best.
62.6 [Machine] What is in playing with pigeons?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed a pigeon, and then Satan said, "He follows a pigeon just as he follows his partner." He contradicted in what was narrated from him, so Muhammad ibn Amr narrated from Abu Salamah, who narrated from Aisha. And the hadith of Hammad is the most authentic, and Allah knows best. Umar ibn Hamza narrated from Husayn ibn Mus'ab, who said, "Abu Hurayrah disliked betting with two pigeons."
62.7 [Machine] What Comes in Between the Horse and Its Destination
[Machine] Allah ﷺ rode ahead among the horses, sending them from Al-Hafya. The furthest point is Thaniyat Al-Wada' (a location), and Allah ﷺ rode ahead among the horses that were not enclosed. The furthest point for them was from Thaniyat to Masjid Bani Zuraiq. Abdullah Ibn Umar was the first to mention the hadith of Ibn Qatadah and the hadith of Abu Abdullah regarding the horses that were not enclosed. He did not mention what came before it (the passage references a specific number, 19764). Abu Amr Al-Adib narrated to us that Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed him that Al-Firyabi reported to him, who was informed by Qutaybah, who was informed by Al-Laith Ibn Sa'd, and he mentioned it with its complete chain of narration.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ rode the hidden horses from Al-Hafya to Thaniyah Al-Wada' and then he rode the unharnessed horses from Thaniyah to the Mosque of Bani Zuraiq.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saddled the horses and sent them from al-Hafiyya, and all of them were saddled except for one which he sent from Thaniyya to the Mosque of Bani Zuraiq.
[Machine] Allah's messenger, ﷺ , rode ahead between the horses, and he made the endpoint of the hidden valleys from Al-Hafya to Thaniyyat al-Wada'. And what was not hidden in Thaniyyat to the Mosque of Bani Zuraiq. Ibn Umar said, "I came ahead, and the horse carried me lightly around the mosque." The words are attributed to the Hadith of Ibn Harb.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was riding a horse that had been prepared for him. He sent it from Al-Hafiya and its journey took two or three days. I asked Musa, "How far is it?" He said, "Six or seven miles." And there were horses that were not prepared, but he sent them from Masjid Bani Zuraiq and their journey took a mile or so. Ibn Umar said that he was among those who preceded the horses.
[Machine] The horses used to run for six miles, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the leading horse to Hammad bin Sulaiman. This is an unknown horse.
62.8 [Machine] The two men race with their horses and each one of them goes out ahead, and they both enter in between as equals, assuming that if the neutral person preceded them, they would give what they took out to him, and if one of them preceded the neutral person, he would keep his belongings and take the belongings of his companion.
The Prophet ﷺ said: If one enters a horse with two others when he is not certain that it cannot be beaten, it is not gambling; but when one enters a horse with two others when he is certain it cannot be beaten, it is gambling. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2579)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever enters a horse between two horses and is not afraid of being left behind, then it is gambling. And whoever enters a horse between two horses and is afraid of being left behind, then it is not gambling." This was specifically mentioned by Sufyan ibn Husayn and Sa'id ibn Bashir from Az-Zuhri, and it was narrated by Abu Dawood in his book of Sunan.
[Machine] He heard Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib saying, "There is no harm in betting on horses if a gambler is involved. If he wins, he takes the lead, and if he loses, there is no harm upon him."
[Machine] Regarding the scholars who follow the opinion of the people of Madinah, they used to say that gambling on horses is permissible if it contains equal conditions. If one takes precedence, they will receive compensation, and if they are overtaken, they will not be fined. It is necessary for the compensator to be similar to the horse in terms of speed and strength.

62.9 [Machine] What is mentioned in the bet on horses and what is permissible and what is not permissible
[Machine] The judge Ibn Ayyub sent his horse one day. We said if we could meet Anas ibn Malik, so we met him and asked him, "Did you gamble on the covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gambled on a horse called Subhah, which came first, so he liked it and its meaning."
[Machine] We do not know of any prayer better in the sight of Allah than the congregational prayer of Fajr on Friday. They asked him, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, do you used to take a bet during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Yes, we used to bet on a horse called Subhah (Morning) and it would come first." Ismail said, "Sulayman bin Harb narrated to us this Hadith from Hammad bin Zaid, then Hammad bin Zaid said after that, or Sa'id bin Zaid said, 'The sheikh narrated and Ahmad bin Sa'id ad-Darimi narrated it from Sulayman bin Harb from Hammad bin Zaid without any doubt.' Asad bin Musa also narrated it from Hammad bin Zaid. The sheikh said, 'And if this is authentic, then what they intended was that if one of the two horses preceded the other, its owner would win the bet, and Allah knows best."
[Machine] So, I saw my father Obaidah jumping while he was riding behind on an Arabian horse.
[Machine] Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Horses are of three types: a horse owned by the Most Merciful, a horse owned by Satan, and a horse owned by humans. As for the horse owned by the Most Merciful, its dung and urine will be weighed in its favor on the Day of Judgment. As for the horse owned by Satan, it is the one that is gambled upon. And as for the horse owned by humans, it is the one that is tied with the intention of seeking sustenance and fearing poverty. If it is established that they participated in a race and did not enter them both as companions, it would be considered gambling, and it is not permissible. And Allah knows best."
62.10 [Machine] No bringing or taking sides in gambling.
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'There is no pre-marital intercourse, nor impurity in a vow (i.e. a man's oath swearing he will enjoy his wife)'. This is the wording of the hadith narrated by Anbasah, and in another narration by Humayd, 'There is no impurity, nor pre-marital intercourse, nor shaving the pubic hair in Islam'."
Qatadah said “Taking another horse behind one’s horse to urge it on and taking another horse at one’s side are (done) in a horse race. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2582)
[Machine] So if the horse falls behind in the race, something is moved behind it to stimulate it and make it run faster. This is called a whip. As for the side, it is avoided with the horse that is being raced until the rider turns onto the other controlled horse. Then he takes the lead.
[Machine] It was reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Ali, "O Ali, I have granted you this distinction among the people." Ali then left and called Suraqah bin Malik and said to him, "O Suraqah, I have granted you what the Prophet ﷺ has granted me in terms of this distinction. When you reach the Mitaar, say 'Is there anyone in need of prayer or carrying a child or relieving themselves?'" If no one responds, then say the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) three times, and at the third time, release it. Whoever Allah pleases among His creation will be pleased with his distinction. Ali would sit at the end of Mitaar and draw a line which would serve as a reference point for two men sitting opposite each other with the ends of the line between their big toes. The horses would pass between the two men, and when one horse comes out in front of its rider from the side of its ear or ear fuzz, then give him the lead. If you are doubtful, then give the lead to both horses equally. When you pair the two things, then let the end of the line be from the end of the smaller of the two things. In Islam, there should be no pulling or dragging or competition. This narrations has a weak chain of narration.
