42. Book of Dressing Up
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "If you hear the barking of dogs or the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge in Allah, for indeed they see what you do not see. And limit your going out when the man of the house becomes calm, for Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, sends forth from His creations during the night whatever He wills. And close the doors and mention the name of Allah upon them, for indeed Satan does not open a closed door upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned. And cover the vessels and extinguish the lamps, and secure the containers, and quench the fires."
A mouse came dragging a wick and dropped before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the mat on which he was sitting with the result that it burned a hole in it about the size of dirham. He (the prophet) said: When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for the devil guides a creature like this to do thus and sets you on fire. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5247)
Abu Musa reported that a house was burnt down in Medina during the night over its inhabitants. When their matter was reported to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said; This fire is an enemy of yours. So when you go to sleep, extinguish it. (Using translation from Muslim 2016)
That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever spends the night with [a smell] on his hand and something happens to him, then let him not blame anyone but himself." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1860)
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic text is: The Messenger of Allahﷺ used to place his right hand under his right cheek when he lay down, and then he would say, "O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day when You resurrect Your servants."
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allahﷺ that when he lay down to sleep, he would place his right hand under his right cheek and say, "O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants."
Fāṭimah came to the Prophet ﷺ to complain about the marks on her hands from grinding flour. She heard that the Prophet ﷺ had received some captives, so she went to him to request a servant but did not find him. Instead, she met ʿĀʾishah and shared her request with her. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, ʿĀʾishah informed him about Fāṭimah's request.
So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, and we had already taken our places in bed. We got up to greet him, and he said, "Stay in your places." He then sat among us until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He then said, "I shall guide you to something better than having a servant: When you go to bed, say Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times, al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times; This is better for you than having a servant."
[Machine] "I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, teach me something that I can say when I go to my bed.' He said, 'Recite Surah Al-Kafirun.'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you have someone to take care of us in Rabi'ah? Zainab, will you take care of her?" He replied, "I left her with her mother." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "What brings you here?" He said, "I came to learn something to say in my dream." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite Say, 'O disbelievers' and then sleep on its end, for it is a disavowal of polytheism."
When you go to bed during night, you should say:" O Allah, I surrender myself to Thee and entrust my affair to Thee, with hope in Thee and fear of Thee. There is no resort and no deliverer (from hardship but Thou). I affirm my faith in the Book which Thou revealed and in the Messengers whom Thou sent." If you die in this state you would die on Fitra, and Ibn Bashshdr did not make a mention of" night" in this hadith. (Using translation from Muslim 2710c)
A bedtime supplication for which Allah forgives the sins
from the Prophet ﷺ : "Whoever says when he retires to his bed, 'There is no God but Allah alone without any partners, to Him belong the dominion and praise and He is powerful over all things, there is no movement or might but in Allah, glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Allah, there is not God but Allah, and Allah is the greatest, then Allah will forgive his sins even if they were like the foam of the sea."
[Machine] That Fatimah came to the Prophet ﷺ and used to serve him, so he said ﷺ , "Shall I not guide you or teach you something that is better for you than that? When you go to your bed, say 'SubhanAllah', 'Allahu Akbar', and 'Alhamdulillah', thirty-three times each." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have not left saying it since I heard it from the Prophet ﷺ ." They said, "Not even during the night of Siffin?" He said, "Not even during the night of Siffin."
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up during the night, he would say: "There is no god but Allah, the One, the Prevailing, the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Mighty, the Forgiving.""
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ awake at night, he said: There is no god but thou, glory be to Thee, O Allah, I ask Thy pardon for my sin and I ask Thee for Thy mercy. O Allah! advance me in knowledge: do not cause my heart to deviate (from guidance) after Thou hast guided me, and grant me mercy from thyself; verily thou art the grantor. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5061)
when the prophet (May peace be upon him) lay down on his bed (at night), he would say: O Allah! In Thy name I die and live. When he awoke, he said: praise be to Allah who has given us life after causing us to die and to whom we shall be resurrected. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5049)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a person goes to sleep on his bed, an angel and a devil come to him. The angel says, 'Seal it with good,' and the devil says, 'Seal it with evil.' If the person remembers Allah and then falls asleep, the angels protect him. If he wakes up, the angel says, 'Open it with good,' and the devil says, 'Open it with evil.' If the person says, 'Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) who has returned my soul to me and has not caused it to die in its sleep,' and then he dies in his sleep, he enters paradise."
When any one of you goes to bed, he should take hold of the hem of his lower garment and then should clean (his bed) with the help of that and then should recite the name of Allah for he himself does tiot know what he left behind him on his bed, and when he intends to lie on bed, he should lie on his right side and utter these words:" Hallowed be Allah, my Lord. It is with Thine (grace) that I place my side (upon the bed) and it is with Thee that I take it up (after sleep), and in case Thou withholdst my being (if thou causest me to die), then grant pardon to my being, and if Thou keepst (this process of breathing on), then protect it with that with which Thou protected Thine pious servants." (Using translation from Muslim 2714a)
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "When one of you goes to bed, let him take off his garment and shake it off his bed inside it. Then let him lie down on his right side and say: 'In Your name, O Allah, I lay down my side, and in Your name, I raise it. O Allah, if You hold onto my soul, have mercy on it, and if You let it go, protect it with what You protect Your righteous servants.'"
The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said to me: When you go to your bed, perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, and then lie on your right side and say: O Allah I have handed over my face to thee, entrusted my affairs to thee, and committed my back to thee out of desire for and fear to thee. There is no refuge and no place of safety from thee except by having recource to thee. I believe in Thy Book which Thou hast sent down and in Thy prophet whom thou hast sent down. He said : If you die (that night), you would die in the true religion, and utter these words in the last of that you utter (other prayers). When any one of you intends to go to sleep, he should lie on the bed on his right side and then say:" O Allah. the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord, and the Lord of evervthina, the Splitter of the grain of corn and the datestone (or fruit kernal), the Revealer of Torah and Injil (Bible) and Criterion (the Holy Qur'an), I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of every- thing Thou art to sieze by the forelock (Thou hast perfect control over it). O Allah, Thou art the First, there is naught before Thee, and Thou art the Last and there is naught after Thee, and Thou art Evident and there is nothing above Thee, and Thou art Innermost and there is nothing beyond Thee. So she brought some bread close to him. He said, "Oh Aishah, feed us." So she brought some dates close to him. He said, "Oh Aishah, give us something to drink." So she brought a jug of water and he drank from it. Then he said, "Oh Aishah, give us something to drink." So she brought a jug of water other than the first one, and he drank from it. Then he said, "If you want, you can sleep here with us, or if you prefer, you can go to the masjid and sleep there." He said, "So we slept in the masjid. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us later in the night and he found me sleeping on my stomach, so he kicked me with his foot and said, "What is the matter with you?
