11. Anṣār (4/12)
[Machine] "I saw a man who was being consoled by his father in the manner of pre-Islamic consolation. He boasted about his father and held on to him tightly, although there was no reason for him to do so. Then he said to them, 'Indeed, I see what is within yourselves. I am only capable of this.' I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'If someone seeks solace in the manner of pre-Islamic ignorance, then provide solace to them and do not scorn them.'"
[Machine] "A man sought solace in the consolation of the pre-Islamic period, so he mentioned the narration and said: Ubayy used to say, 'We were commanded that when a man seeks solace in the consolation of the pre-Islamic period, we should console him with it, and do not withhold it from him on account of his father.'"
[Machine] Abu was command, whenever a man incited, he would mention the same.
[Machine] "Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'There is a devil for ablution called Al-Walahaan, so beware of him, or he said, be cautious of him.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, the food of the son of Adam has been made as a metaphor for this world. And if he spoils and salts it, then look at what becomes of it."
[Machine] About Utayyah, he said: I saw an elder in the city speaking, so I asked about him and they said, "This is Ubayy bin Ka'b." He said, "When death approached Adam, ﷺ , he said to his sons, 'O my sons, I desire the fruits of Paradise.' So they went searching for it. The angels met them, carrying his shroud, coffin, and tools. They said to them, 'O sons of Adam, what do you seek? Where are you going?'
They replied, 'Our father is ill and he desires the fruits of Paradise.'
The angels said to them, 'Go back, for your father's decree has been fulfilled.'
So they went back, and when Hawwa (Eve) saw them, she recognized them and sought refuge with Adam. He said to her, 'I have received only what I was given from you, so keep me separated from the angels of my Lord, the Blessed and Exalted.'
They then took him, washed him, shrouded him, perfumed him, and dug his grave. They placed him in his grave and poured milk over him. Then they left the grave, spread dust over it, and said, 'O children of Adam, this is your tradition.'"

11.20 [Machine] Al-Tufayl bin Abi bin Ka'b, from his father
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The earthquake comes followed by the aftershock, and then death comes with all that it entails."
A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you suggest if I were to dedicate all of my ṣalāt (duʿāʾ) for you?" He said, "˹If you do this˺ Allah will make it sufficient for what concerns you in this world or your Hereafter."
[Machine] About the Prophets, ﷺ , he said: "My example among the Prophets is like a man who built a house and made it beautiful and complete, except for one missing brick. People would go around the construction and admire it, saying, 'If only that one brick was placed, then I would be in the ranks of the Prophets, occupying the place of that missing brick.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My example among the prophets is like a man who built a house, beautified and perfected it, except for a small corner he left without placing a brick. People would go around the building and admire it, saying, 'If only this brick was placed.'"

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray facing the trunk of a date- palm tree when the mosque was still a hut, and he used to deliver the sermon leaning on that trunk. A man from among his Companions said: ‘Would you like us to make you something upon which you can stand on Fridays so that the people will be able to see you and hear your sermon?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ So he made three steps for him, as a pulpit. When they put the pulpit in place, they put it in the place where it stands now. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to stand on the pulpit, he passed by the tree trunk from which he used to deliver the sermon, and when he went beyond the trunk, it moaned and split and cracked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down when he heard the voice of the trunk, and rubbed it with his hand until it fell silent. Then he went back to the pulpit and when he prayed, he prayed facing it. When the mosque was knocked down (for renovation) and (the pillars, etc.) were changed, Ubayy bin Ka’b took that trunk and kept it in his house until it became very old and the termites consumed it and it became grains of dust.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1414)

[Machine] While we were in rows behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the afternoon or evening prayer, we saw him taking something between his hands while he was in prayer, he took it and then took it again, it passed between him and us, and he delayed, and we delayed, and he delayed again and we delayed. When he had finished, Ubayy bin Ka'b said, "O Messenger of Allah, we saw you doing something in your prayer that you did not used to do before." He said, "Indeed, Paradise was presented to me with its adornments, so I took some of its grapes to bring to you, and if I had taken it, you would have eaten from it until the distance between the heavens and the earth was consumed, and you would not be deprived of it. Then Hell was presented to me, and when I saw its intense heat, I turned away until I perceived that women constituted the majority of its inhabitants. I also saw Luha bin 'Amr dragging his intestines, and he resembled 'Amr bin 'Aikum the worshipper." Ma'bad said, "Am I the one you fear for, O Messenger of Allah, even though he is my father?" He said, "Yes, because you are a believer and he is a disbeliever, and he was the first to gather the Arabs against the idols."

What happened to moaning palm tree trunk upon which the Prophet ﷺ used to lean on to deliver sermons
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray next to a palm tree trunk when the mosque was made of date palm leaves. He also used to deliver his sermon to the people beside that trunk. A man from his companions said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I make a minbar (pulpit) for you to stand on during Friday sermons so that the people can see and hear you better?" The Prophet ﷺ agreed, so he built a minbar with three steps, which the Prophet ﷺ used for his sermons.
When the minbar was completed and placed where the Prophet ﷺ intended to use it, he approached it. However, as he moved past the palm tree trunk he used to stand beside and approached the new minbar, the trunk made a sound and seemed to mourn. It quivered and split. Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ descended from the minbar and touched the trunk with his hand in a comforting manner. Then he returned to the minbar.
During his prayers, the Prophet ﷺ would sometimes lean towards the trunk. Ṭufayl said that when the mosque was later rebuilt, and its structure changed, his father Abū Ubayy b. Kaʿb took possession of that palm tree trunk and kept it in his house until it deteriorated and eventually turned to dust.

[Machine] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about things that nobody else asked him about. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what was the first thing you witnessed in matters of prophethood?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat up straight and said, "I asked Abu Hurairah, 'When I was in the desert at the age of ten years and some months, I heard a voice above my head. Then, a man said to another man, 'Is it him?' He replied, 'Yes.' They both turned towards me and started walking towards me until each of them held one of my shoulders without me feeling their touch. One of them said to his companion, 'Make him lie down,' so they made me lie down without any bending or stiffening. Then, one of them said to his companion, 'Open his chest,' and one of them reached out towards my chest and opened it up without any pain or bleeding. Then, he said to the other, 'Remove the gland and jealousy.' So, the other one removed something resembling a clot of blood or flesh and threw it away. Then, he said, 'Enter compassion and mercy,' and when he did, it seemed as if a silver thread were being drawn through my chest. Finally, he closed my chest and said, 'Go forth and be steadfast.' So, I returned with it, feeling lightness in my heart, providing comfort for the young and mercy for the elderly."

I was standing along with Ubayy b. Kaʿb and he said: The opinions of the people differ in regard to the achievement of worldly ends. I said: Yes, of course. Thereupon he said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The Euphrates would soon uncover a mountain of gold and when the people would bear of it they would flock towards it but the people who would possess that (treasure) (would say): If we allow these persons to take out of it they would take away the whole of it. So they would fight and ninety-nine out of one hundred would be killed. Abu Kamil in his narration said: I and Ubayy b. Kaʿb stood under the shade of the battlement of Hassan. (Using translation from Muslim 2895)

[Machine] "I came to the city to meet the companions of Muhammad ﷺ, and there was no person among them whom I loved more than Ubay. So, the prayer was established and Umar came out with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I stood in the first row, and a man came and looked at the faces of the people, recognizing them except me. He gestured to me and stood in my place. I couldn't understand what happened to my prayer. When he finished praying, he said, 'O my son, may Allah not make you upset. I did not take the place that I took from you out of ignorance, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to be in the row that is adjacent to him. I looked at the faces of the people and recognized them except for you.' Then he spoke, and I didn't see men bending their necks towards anything as they were towards him. He said, 'The people of Al-'Uqdah have been destroyed, by the Lord of Al-Ka'bah, may they have no distress. But distress is upon those Muslims who will be destroyed.' And he was Ubay, and the narration is from Sulaiman bin Dawood."

11.24 [Machine] Abu Basir Al-Abdi and his son Abdullah bin Abu Basir, narrated by Abu bin Ka'b
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer one day. And he said: Is so and so present? They said: No. He (again) asked: Is so and so present? They replied: No. He then said: These two prayers are the ones which are most burdensome to hypocrites. If you knew what they contain (i.e. blessings), you would come to them, even though you had to crawl on your knees. The first row is like that of the angels, and if you knew the nature of its excellence, you would race to join it. A man's prayer said along with another is purer than his prayer said alone, and his prayer with two men is purer than his prayer with one, but if there are more it is more pleasing to Allah, the Almighty, the Majestic. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 554)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Fajr prayer. After the prayer, he said, "Did so-and-so witness the prayer?" The people remained silent and they said, "Yes, he did not attend." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the heaviest prayers upon the hypocrites are the 'Isha' and Fajr prayers. If they knew the virtues of these two prayers, they would come to perform them even if they had to crawl. Indeed, the first row in prayer is equivalent to the row of angels, and if you knew the virtue of it, you would compete to be in it. Indeed, your prayer along with two men is purer than your prayer with one man, and your prayer with one man is purer than your prayer alone. However, the more the number increases, the more beloved it is to Allah."

[Machine] I arrived in the city and met Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who mentioned something similar to that.
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ prayed the morning prayer and then said, "There is a witness, so and so," and mentioned the narration.

[Machine] Ubayy ibn Ka'b prayed the Fajr prayer with us, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he finished the prayer, he noticed that there were only a few people in the mosque, so he asked, "Is so-and-so present?" We replied, "Yes," until he counted three individuals. He then said, "Indeed, it is not a heavier prayer for the hypocrites than the prayer of Al-Isha and the Fajr prayer in the Hereafter." And he mentioned the Hadith in its entirety.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas (Qul huwa Allahu ahad), it is as if he has recited one-third of the Qur'an."
[Machine] "Praying in a single garment is a Sunnah that we used to do with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and no one would criticize us for it. Ibn Mas'ud said, 'That was only done when there were few clothes available. But when Allah made clothing abundant, praying in two garments is better.'"
[Machine] Narrated by Abdullah, Hudbah bin Khaled reported to us, Hammad reported to us from Thabit, from Abu Rafe', from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that the Messenger of Allah used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. However, one year he was unable to observe i'tikaf due to circumstances. Then, the following year, he observed i'tikaf for twenty days.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?" He said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He repeated it several times and then said, "O Abu Al-Mundhir, the verse of the Throne is the greatest." He said, "May knowledge bring you blessings, O Abu Al-Mundhir, by the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed it has a tongue and two lips that sanctify the King at the foot of the Throne."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commissioned me as a collector of zakat. I visited a man. When he had collected his property of camels, I found that a she-camel in her second year was due from him. I said to him: Pay a she-camel in her second year, for she is to be paid as sadaqah (zakat) by you. He said: That one is not worthy of milking and riding. Here is another she-camel which is young, grand and fat. So take it. I said to him: I shall not take an animal for which I have not been commanded. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is here near to you. If you like, go to him, and present to him what you presented to me. Do that; if he accepts it from you, I shall accept it; if he rejects it, I shall reject it. He said: I shall do it. He accompanied me and took with him the she-camel which he had presented to me. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to him: Prophet of Allah, your messenger came to me to collect zakat on my property. By Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah nor his messenger has ever seen my property before. I gathered my property (camels), and he estimated that a she-camel in her second year would be payable by me. But that has neither milk nor is it worth riding. So I presented to him a grand young she-camel for acceptance as zakat. But he has refused to take her. Look, she is here; I have brought her to you, Messenger of Allah. Take her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: That is what is due from you. If you give voluntarily a better (animal) Allah will give a reward to you for it. We accept her from you. She is here, Messenger of Allah; I have brought her to you. So take her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered me to take possession of it, and he prayed for a blessing on his property.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him (referring to someone) as a representative, and he mentioned a narration similar to that of Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) and added to it, saying "Umamah (a name) and I was appointed to collect their charity during the time of Mu'awiyah. So I took from that man thirty shares for every one thousand and five hundred camels he owned."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer and left out a verse. He then asked, "Which one of you has memorized anything from my recitation?" Ubayy said, "I, O Messenger of Allah, have memorized a certain verse that you left out." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have indeed known it, for it is you who had taken it from me."
[Machine] A man entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, "When did you see Um Mildam?" He (the Prophet) was reddish between the skin and the flesh. He said, "That is an illness that has never afflicted me before." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of a believer is like a raw fruit, its color turns red and yellow."
[Machine] He (Ubay ibn Ka'b) had a garment that was not suitable for you. We enjoyed it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he did not prohibit us from doing so. Therefore, Umar reproached him for wearing the clothes made from animal hides because they are dyed with urine. Ubay answered him, "These were worn by the Prophet ﷺ , and we wore them during his lifetime."
