23. Abū Dardāʾ (1/2)

ahmad-zuhd:713ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ismāʿīl > Ayyūb > Abū Qilābah

[Machine] Abu Dardaa, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "You do not truly understand all of understanding until you see different aspects of the Quran. And you do not truly understand all of understanding until you despise people for the sake of Allah, then you return to yourself and find that you despise yourself more than you despise others."

ahmad-zuhd:714ʿAbdullāh > Abū Hadhā al-Ḥadīth > Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Ḥusayn b. Sawwār > al-Layth > Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ > Abū al-Zāhiriyyah > Jubayr b. Nufayr > ʿAwf b. Mālik

[Machine] He saw in a dream a dome made of Adamant and a green meadow around the dome with grazing sheep. He said, "Whose dome is this?" It was said, "It belongs to Abdur-Rahman bin Awf." So we waited until he came out and said, "O Awf! This is what Allah has given us through the Quran. If you had seen this building, you would have seen something that your eyes have not seen, your ears have not heard, and your heart has not conceived. Allah has prepared it for Abu Darda because he used to push away the worldly life with contentment and sacrifice."

ahmad-zuhd:715ʿAbdullāh > Hārūn b. ʿAbdullāh > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Saʿīd al-Jarīrī > Baʿḍ Ashyākhih

[Machine] Abu Darda saw a man at a funeral saying, "Who is this?" Abu Darda replied, "This is you, this is you," Allah says, "Indeed, you are mortal, and indeed, they are mortal." [Az-Zumar 30]

ahmad-zuhd:716ʿAbdullāh > Sayyār b. Abū Shaybah > Abū Hilāl > Muʿāwiyah / Ibn Qurrah

[Machine] Abu Darda complained, so his companions entered upon him and said, "What do you complain about, Abu Darda?" He said, "I complain about my sins." They said, "What do you desire?" He said, "I desire paradise." They said, "Shouldn't we pray for you to have a doctor?" He said, "He is the one who made me bedridden."

ahmad-zuhd:717ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ Waʾabū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > ʿAbdullāh b. Murrah

[Machine] Abu Darda said, "Worship Allah as if you see Him and count yourselves among the dead. Know that a little that suffices you is better than a lot that distracts you. And know that righteousness does not wither away and sin is not forgotten."

ahmad-zuhd:718ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Ibn Mahdī > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Ayyūb > Abū Qilābah > Abū al-Dardāʾ ؒ

[Machine] Call upon Allah on the day of your ease, perhaps He may respond to you on the day of your difficulties.

ahmad-zuhd:719ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Shuʿbah > ʿAmr b. Murrah

[Machine] From Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Layla, Abu Darda wrote to Salamah bin Makhlad: As for what follows, when a servant obeys Allah, Allah loves him, and when Allah loves him, He makes him beloved among His creation. And when a servant commits disobedience to Allah, Allah dislikes him, and when Allah dislikes him, He makes him disliked among His creation.

ahmad-zuhd:720ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > Mālik b. Mighwal Wa-al-Masʿūdī > ʿAwn

ahmad-zuhd:721ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > Sufyān > Thawr > Sulaymān b. ʿĀmir > Abū al-Dardāʾ

[Machine] Yes, the tranquility of a man's home is sufficient for him to protect his vision and his tongue. Beware of unnecessary socializing, as it distracts and wastes one's time.

ahmad-zuhd:722ʿAbdullāh from my father > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Yūnus > al-Ḥasan > Abū al-Dardāʾ Lawlā Thalāth Laʾaḥbabt

[Machine] "That I be in the belly of the earth, not on its surface, were it not for brothers who come to me, picking out the good words like picking out the good dates or making my face happy, prostrating to Allah or a morning or evening expedition in the path of Allah."

ahmad-zuhd:723ʿAbdullāh from my father > al-Walīd b. Muslim > Abū Jābir

ahmad-zuhd:724ʿAbdullāh from my father > al-Walīd > Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Rabīʿah b. Zayd

[Machine] Abu Darda used to say: "Perform a righteous deed before the battle, for you will only fight people with your deeds."

ahmad-zuhd:726ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Jubayr b. Nufayr from his father > Abū al-Dardāʾ ؒ

[Machine] Indeed, those whose tongues are moist with the remembrance of Allah, they shall enter Paradise while they are laughing.

ahmad-zuhd:727ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Muʿāwiyah > Abū al-Zāhiriyyah > Jubayr b. Nufayr > Abū al-Dardāʾ

[Machine] The scholar and the learner are equal in reward, and there is no good in what is other than them.

ahmad-zuhd:728ʿAbdullāh > Dāwud b. ʿUmar > ʿAbthar > al-Aʿmash > Sālim b. Abū al-Jaʿd

ahmad-zuhd:729ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ibn Mahdī > Muʿāwiyah > Abū al-Zāhiriyyah > Jubayr b. Nufayr > Abū al-Dardāʾ

[Machine] If it were not for three things, people would have been righteous: an inclination to be greedy, followed by their desires, and the admiration of everyone for their own opinion.

[Machine] Indeed, the liberation of one hundred from someone's wealth is abundant. And if you wish, I will inform you of what is better than that, it is a firm belief that is obligatory day and night, and your tongue continues to be moist from the remembrance of Allah.

ahmad-zuhd:731ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Sulaymān b. al-Mughīrah > Ḥumayd b. Hilāl

[Machine] The world is cursed. Cursed is everything in it except for the remembrance of Allah and that which leads to the remembrance of Allah. The scholar and the student are equal in their reward. As for the rest of the people, they are ignorant and have no good in them.

ahmad-zuhd:735ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad > ʿAbdullāh b. Bujayr > Abū ʿAbd Rabbih > Abū al-Dardāʾ Mā Yasurrunī

[Machine] "To climb the stairs from the door of the mosque, then buy and sell, and earn three hundred dinars every day. I witness all prayers in the mosque. What do I say? [Machine] Abu Darda Al-Rayb said, "Doubt is from disbelief, lamenting is the work of ignorance, poetry is the psalms of Satan, gossip is a ember from Hell, wine is the gathering of all sins, youth is a branch of madness, women are the traps of the Devil, arrogance is the worst of all evil, the worst food is the wealth of an orphan, the worst earnings are from usury, the fortunate is the one who is advised by someone other than himself, and the wretched is the one who causes distress to his mother."

[Machine] Abu Darda had a specific number of dates, around ten or so, in a bag. When he would pray the morning prayer, he would sit on his bed and take out one date at a time and praise God with each one. When he finished them all, he would start again, one by one, praising God with each date. This continued until Umm Darda came to him and said, "O Abu Darda, your lunch is ready. Perhaps he said, 'Lift it up, for I am fasting.'"
