[Machine] I saw Ali, ﷺ , wearing a wrapped waistcloth and a flowing cloak, and he had a coin with him. He looked like a Bedouin until he reached the market of crockery. He said about a shirt for three dirhams. When they recognized him, they did not buy anything from him. Then, another person came, and when they recognized him, they did not buy anything from him. Then, a boy came and he bought a shirt for three dirhams. Then, the boy's father came and informed him, so his father took a dirham and came with it. Ali said, "What is the matter with this dirham?" The man said, "The price of the shirt was two dirhams." Ali said, "He sold me his satisfaction, and I took his satisfaction."  

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ مُتَّزِرًا بِإِزَارٍ مُتَرَدِّيًا بِرِدَاءٍ وَمَعَهُ الدِّرَّةَ كَأَنَّهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بَدْوِيٌّ حَتَّى بَلَغَ سُوقَ الْكَرَابِيسِ فَقَالَ فِي قَمِيصٍ بِثَلَاثَةِ دَرَاهِمَ فَلَمَّا عَرَفَهُ لَمْ يَشْتَرِ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَأَتَى آخَرُ فَلَمَّا عَرَفَهُ لَمْ يَشْتَرِ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَأَتَى غُلَامًا حَدَثًا فَاشْتَرَى مِنْهُ قَمِيصًا بِثَلَاثَةِ دَرَاهِمَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ أَبُو الْغُلَامِ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَأَخَذَ أَبُوهُ دِرْهَمًا ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ هَذَا الدِّرْهَمُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَ «مَا شَأْنُ هَذَا الدِّرْهَمِ» قَالَ «كَانَ ثَمَنُ الْقَمِيصِ دِرْهَمَيْنِ» فَقَالَ «بَاعَنِي رِضَايَ وَأَخَذَ رِضَاهُ»  

[Machine] He said, "Learn knowledge; you will be known for it and act upon it; you will be among its people. For there will come after you a time when truth is rejected, and nine out of ten people will not be saved except every sleeping one. Those are the leaders of guidance and the lamps of knowledge."  

أَنَّهُ قَالَ «تَعَلَّمُوا الْعِلْمَ؛ تُعْرَفُوا بِهِ وَاعْمَلُوا بِهِ؛ تَكُونُوا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ فَإِنَّهُ سَيَأْتِي مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ زَمَانٌ يُنْكِرُ الْحَقَّ فِيهِ تِسْعَةُ أَعْشَارِهِمْ لَا يَنْجُو فِيهِ إِلَّا كُلُّ نُؤْمَةٍ أُولَئِكَ أَئِمَّةُ الْهُدَى وَمَصَابِيحُ الْعِلْمِ»  

[Machine] "The most fearsome thing I fear for you is two things: length of hope and following desires. As for the length of hope, it makes you forget the hereafter, and as for following desires, it diverts from the truth. Know that this world has turned its back, while the next world is approaching, and each of them has offspring. So be among the children of the hereafter, and do not be among the children of this world. For indeed, today there is work without reckoning, and tomorrow there will be reckoning without work."  

«إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ اثْنَتَيْنِ طُولُ الْأَمَلِ وَاتِّبَاعُ الْهَوَى فَأَمَّا طُولُ الْأَمَلِ فَيُنْسِي الْآخِرَةَ وَأَمَّا اتِّبَاعُ الْهَوَى فَيَصُدُّ عَنِ الْحَقِّ أَلَا وَإِنَّ الدُّنْيَا قَدْ وَلَّتْ مُدْبِرَةً وَالْآخِرَةُ مُقْبِلَةٌ وَلِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا بَنُونَ فَكُونُوا مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ الدُّنْيَا فَإِنَّ الْيَوْمَ عَمَلٌ وَلَا حِسَابَ وَغَدًا حِسَابٌ وَلَا عَمَلَ»  

[Machine] "This is the rest of our provision from Yanbu."  

«هَذِهِ بَقِيَّةُ نَفَقَتِنَا مِنْ يَنْبُعَ»  

[Machine] Ali used to order the cleaning of the treasury, then it would be sprinkled and he would pray in it, hoping that it would testify for him on the Day of Judgment that he did not withhold money from the Muslims.  

«أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ بِبَيْتِ الْمَالِ فَيُكْنَسُ ثُمَّ يُنْضَحُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ رَجَاءَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَحْبِسْ فِيهِ الْمَالَ عَنِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ»  

[Machine] Ali, ﷺ , had two wives. When it was the day of one of them, he would buy meat for half a dirham, and when it was the day of the other, he would also buy meat for half a dirham.  

«أَنَّ عَلِيًّا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ كَانَ لَهُ امْرَأَتَانِ كَانَ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ هَذِهِ اشْتَرَى لَحْمًا بِنِصْفِ دِرْهَمٍ وَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ هَذِهِ اشْتَرَى لَحْمًا بِنِصْفِ دِرْهَمٍ»  

[Machine] "No, but it is like this." And he rested his hand on top and Abu Omar placed his hand on his hand.  

«لَا وَلَكِنَّهَا هَكَذَا» وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فَوْقُ وَبَسَطَ أَبُو عُمَرَ يَدَهُ عَلَى يَدِهِ  

[Machine] "When Uthman sent mercy of Allah upon Ali, he found him wearing a cloak, tied with a waist wrap, while he was feeding his camel."  

«لَمَّا أَرْسَلَ عُثْمَانُ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ مَا فِي التَّعَاقُبِ وَجَدَهُ مُتَّزِرًا بِعَبَاءَةٍ مُحْتَجِزًا بِعِقَالٍ وَهُوَ يَهْنَأُ بَعِيرًا لَهُ»  

[Machine] "The heart becomes humble and the believer follows it."  

«يَخْشَعُ الْقَلْبُ وَيَقْتَدِي بِهِ الْمُؤْمِنُ»  

[Machine] Ali (may ﷺ ) was brought a plate of food but he did not eat it.  

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أُتِيَ بِفَالُوذَجٍ فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْهُ  

[Machine] To its owner came a bucket and a date. So, I filled a bucket with a date and filled my hand. Then, I drank some water and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a full hand. He ate some of it and I ate some of it.  

لِي صَاحِبُهُ دَلْوًا وَتَمْرَةً فَدَلَوْتُ دَلْوًا بِتَمْرَةٍ فَمَلَأْتُ كَفِّي ثُمَّ شَرِبْتُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ ثُمَّ جِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِمِلْءِ كَفِّي فَأَكَلَ بَعْضَهُ وَأَكَلْتُ بَعْضَهُ  

[Machine] We were with Ali, ﷺ , in the market when he called for a sword and he examined it. Then he said, "Who wants to buy this? I swear by Allah, even if I had the value of a garment, I would not sell it."  

كُنَّا مَعَ عَلِيٍّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِالرَّحْبَةِ فَدَعَا بِسَيْفٍ فَسَلَّهُ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي هَذَا فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدِي ثَمَنَ إِزَارٍ مَا بِعْتُهُ  

[Machine] To make him blind, so he became blind.  

أَنْ يُعْمِيَهُ فَعَمِيَ  

[Machine] Praise be to Allah who has adorned me with what I conceal and beautify in His creation.  

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أَتَوَارَى بِهِ وَأَتَجَمَّلُ فِي خَلْقِهِ  

[Machine] I saw Ali ibn Abi Talib walking towards the Eid.  

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ يَمْشِي إِلَى الْعِيدِ  

[Machine] A delegation from the people of Basra, including a man from the leaders of the Khawarij called Al-Ja'd ibn Ba'jat arrived to see Ali (may Allah have mercy on him). This man addressed the people and praised and glorified Allah. Then he said, "O Ali, fear Allah for you are going to die, and you know the path of the righteous, meaning Umar." Ali (may ﷺ ) replied, "No, by the One whose hand my soul is in, I am not going to die. Rather, I was killed with a strike here (pointing to his head) that will forever make this a known and settled matter, and there is a promised covenant. Whoever claims otherwise has indeed been deceived." Then he rebuked him about his attire and asked, "What prevents you from wearing proper clothing?" The man replied, "What concern is it of yours if I wear this attire?" Ali said, "This attire of mine is far from arrogance, and it is more fitting that Muslims should follow my example."  

قَدِمَ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ وَفْدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ رُءُوسِ الْخَوَارِجِ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْجَعْدُ بْنُ بَعْجَةَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ يَا عَلِيُّ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فَإِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ سَبِيلَ الْمُحْسِنِ يَعْنِي بِالْمُحْسِنِ عُمَرَ ؓ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ لَا وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ بَلْ مَقْتُولًا قَتْلًا ضَرْبَةٌ عَلَى هَذَا تَخْضِبُ هَذِهِ قَضَاءٌ مَقْضِيٌّ وَعَهْدٌ مَعْهُودٌ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرَى ثُمَّ عَاتَبَهُ فِي لُبُوسِهِ فَقَالَ مَا يَمْنَعُكَ أَنْ تَلْبَسَ؟ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلِلِبُوسِي إِنَّ لُبُوسِي هَذَا أَبْعَدُ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ وَأَجْدَرُ أَنْ يَقْتَدِيَ بِيَ الْمُسْلِمُ  

[Machine] Indeed, you are of pleasant fragrance, beautiful color, and delicious taste. But I hate to indulge myself in what I am not accustomed to.  

إِنَّكَ لَطَيِّبُ الرِّيحِ حَسَنُ اللَّوْنِ طَيِّبُ الطَّعْمِ وَلَكِنْ أَكْرَهُ أَنْ أُعَوِّدَ نَفْسِي مَا لَمْ تَعْتَدْهُ  

[Machine] He selected one of them and took it, while Ali ﷺ took the other one. He wore it and stretched out his hand, then said, "Cut off whatever exceeds the extent of my hand." So he cut it off and put it on his palm, then he left.  

لِغُلَامِهِ اخْتَرْ أَيَّهُمَا شِئْتَ فَأَخَذَ أَحَدَهُمَا وَأَخَذَ [110] عَلِيٌّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ الْآخَرَ فَلَبِسَهُ ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اقْطَعِ الَّذِي يَفْضُلُ مِنْ قَدْرِ يَدَيَّ فَقَطَعَهُ وَكَفَّهُ فَلَبِسَهُ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ  

[Machine] "To carry"  

أَنْ يَحْمِلَ  

[Machine] A trustworthy man left you, who was not preceded by previous generations in knowledge, nor will be surpassed by future generations. If the messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him and gave him the banner, he would not leave until he achieved victory. He did not leave behind a yellow or white (camel) except that he gave it as charity, a total of seven hundred dirhams, which he used to assign to his family's servant.  

لَقَدْ فَارَقَكُمْ رَجُلٌ أَمِينٌ مَا سَبَقَهُ الْأَوَّلُونَ بِعِلْمٍ وَلَا أَدْرَكَهُ الْآخِرُونَ إِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيَبْعَثُهُ وَيُعْطِيهِ الرَّايَةَ فَلَا يَنْصَرِفُ حَتَّى يُفْتَحَ لَهُ وَمَا تَرَكَ مِنْ صَفْرَاءَ وَلَا بَيْضَاءَ إِلَّا سَبْعَمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ مِنْ عَطَائِهِ كَانَ يَرْصُدُهَا لِخَادِمِ أَهْلِهِ  

I remember when I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I tied a rock to my stomach because of hunger, and now my zakah is forty thousand. It was narrated from ʿAli ؓ ... and he mentioned the same hadeeth, and said in it. The zakah of my wealth is forty thousand dinars. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1367)   

لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِنِّي لَأَرْبِطُ الْحَجَرَ عَلَى بَطْنِي مِنَ الْجُوعِ وَإِنَّ صَدَقَتِي الْيَوْمَ لَأَرْبَعُونَ أَلْفًا  

[Machine] Abu Darda said, "O my son, do not follow your sight every time you see something in people, for whoever follows his sight every time he sees something in people, his grief will increase and his anger will not be healed. And whoever recognizes the blessings of Allah only in his food or drink, then his knowledge has decreased and his punishment is imminent. And whoever is not wealthy in this world, then he has no world."  

قَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُتْبِعْ بَصَرَكَ كُلَّمَا تَرَى فِي النَّاسِ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يَتْبَعْ بَصَرَهُ كُلَّمَا يَرَى فِي النَّاسِ يَطُلْ تَحَزُّنُهُ وَلَا يَشِفُّ غَيْظُهُ وَمَنْ لَا يَعْرِفْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا فِي مَطْعَمِهِ أَوْ مَشْرَبِهِ فَقَدْ قَلَّ عِلْمُهُ وَحَضَرَ عَذَابُهُ وَمَنْ لَا يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا فَلَا دُنْيَا لَهُ
