'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah reported that a man was praising another man in the presence of Ibn 'Umar. Ibn 'Umar began to throw dust towards his mouth. He said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'When you see those who praise people, throw dust in their faces.'"

الأدب المفرد:٣٤٠ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ أَنَّ رَجُلاً كَانَ يَمْدَحُ رَجُلاً عِنْدَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَجَعَلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَحْثُو التُّرَابَ نَحْوَ فِيهِ وَقَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ

A man came and praised ‘Uthman in his face, al-Miqdad b. Al-Aswad took dust and threw it on his face, saying : The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said : When you see those who are given to praising people, throw dust in their faces.

أبو داود:٤٨٠٤ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هَمَّامٍ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَأَخَذَ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الأَسْوَدِ تُرَابًا فَحَثَا فِي وَجْهِهِ

وَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ
