'Imran b. Husain reported that a person who had no other property emancipated six slaves of his at the time of his death. Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for them and divided them into three sections, cast lots amongst them, and set two free and kept four in slavery; and he (the Holy Prophet) spoke severely of him.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَدَعَا بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَجَزَّأَهُمْ أَثْلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً وَقَالَ لَهُ قَوْلاً شَدِيدًا

A man emancipated six slaved at the time of his death and he had no other property. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about it. He cast lots among them, emancipated two and retained four in slavery.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً

"A Man from the Ansar freed six slaves of his upon his death, and he did not have any wealth aside from them. That was conveyed to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said some harsh words about him." He said: "Then he called for them and he divided them and had them draw lots. So he freed two of them and left four as slaves."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَبَلغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ قَوْلاً شَدِيدًا ثُمَّ دَعَاهُمْ فَجَزَّأَهُمْ ثُمَّ أَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

a man freed six slaves of his when he was dying, and he did not have any wealth apart from them. News of that reached the Prophet and he was angry about that. He said: "I was thinking of not offering the funeral prapyer for him." Then he called the slaves and divided them into three groups. He cast lost among them, then freed two and left four as slaves.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةً مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرَهُمْ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَغَضِبَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ لاَ أُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ دَعَا مَمْلُوكِيهِ فَجَزَّأَهُمْ ثَلاَثَةَ أَجْزَاءٍ ثُمَّ أَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً

a man had six slaves, and he did not have any other wealth apart from them, and he set them free when he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided them into groups, set two free and left four as slaves.

[AI] A man from the Ansar freed six heads (slaves) before his death, and he did not have any wealth apart from them. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about this, he became angry with him. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and reprimanded him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned the slaves and distributed them among themselves; he freed two of them and retained four in slavery.

[AI] A man once freed six slaves he owned, but the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ intervened among them and freed two, and asked the man to make the remaining four slaves free as well. Muhammad ibn Sireen said, "If I hadn't been informed that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said it, I would have considered it my own opinion."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ لَهُ فَأَقْرَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ لَوْ لَمْ يَبْلُغْنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَهُ لَجَعَلْتُهُ رَأْيِي

[AI] A man freed six of his slaves before his death. The Prophet ﷺ drew lots between them, and two of them were freed.

أَعْتَقَ رَجُلٌ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ مِنْهُمْ

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , Ayyub, Hisham, and Habib, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Imran ibn Husayn, from the Prophet ﷺ , and from Humaid, Yunus, Qatadah, and Simak ibn Harb, from Al-Hasan, from Imran ibn Husayn, from the Prophet ﷺ , that a man emancipated six of his slaves when he was on his deathbed, where he had no wealth besides them. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hit between them and freed four of them as slaves and emancipated two.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَيُّوبَ وهِشَامٍ وَحَبِيبٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَحُمَيْدٍ وَيُونُسَ وَقَتَادَةَ وسِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ لَيْسَ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرَهُمْ فَأَقْرَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ وَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ

[AI] A man who had enslaved six people before his death, came and his heirs, who were from the Bedouins, informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what he had done. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Did he really do that?" They replied, "If only we knew, by the will of Allah, we would not have prayed for him." Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rebuked them and emancipated two of the slaves, then returned the remaining four to their masters.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ سِتَّةَ رَجْلَةٍ لَهُ فَجَاءَ وَرَثَتُهُ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ فَأَخْبَرُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَا صَنَعَ قَالَ أَوَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ لَوْ عَلِمْنَا إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ مَا صَلَّيْنَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ مِنْهُمْ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ

Malik related to me from Yahya ibn Said and somebody else from al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri and from Muhammad ibn Sirin that a man in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ freed six of his slaves while he was dying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew lots between them and freed a third of those slaves. Malik added that he had heard that the man did not have any property other than them.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً فِي زَمَانِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَعْتَقَ عَبِيدًا لَهُ سِتَّةً عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ فَأَسْهَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ ثُلُثَ تِلْكَ الْعَبِيدِ قَالَ مَالِكٌ وَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ

«أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَيْسَ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرَهُمْ فَأَقْرَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ»

[AI] A man freed six slaves upon his death because he did not have any other wealth except for them. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck a blow between them and freed two of them and reduced the punishment of the other four.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ لَيْسَ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ «فَأَقْرَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

[AI] "A man had emancipated six slaves, and this news reached the Prophet ﷺ . So he distributed them among themselves, emancipating two and giving the remaining four their freedom."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

[AI] A man had freed two slaves when he was about to die, and he had no other property except them. So, this matter was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he distributed them equally between them, and returned the rest to slavery.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ مَمْلُوكِينَ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ لَيْسَ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَرُفِعَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ «فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ مِنْهُمُ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ بَقِيَّتَهُمْ فِي الرِّقِّ»

[AI] A man from the Ansar freed six slaves upon his death, and he did not have any other wealth besides them. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, he called for them and shook a jar containing their names. He drew out two and returned four to their master.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَعْتَقَ رُءُوسًا سِتَّةً عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «فَدَعَا بِهِمْ فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَصَابَ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ»

[AI] It is reported that a man had six slaves, and he freed them upon his death, despite not having any other possessions. This matter was brought to the attention of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he disliked it. He divided them into three parts, and then carried out a draw between them. He freed two of them, but kept the other four in bondage.

[AI] A man emancipated six of his slaves before his death. So, the Prophet ﷺ drew lots among them and freed two of them.

أَعْتَقَ رَجُلٌ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ «فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ مِنْهُمْ»

[AI] "A man had emancipated six slaves before his death, and he did not possess any other wealth besides them. So the Prophet ﷺ criticized him and emancipated two of them, and released the other four."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةً مِنَ الرَّقِيقِ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً

[AI] A man set free six of his slaves upon his death. The Prophet ﷺ intervened among them, freed two of them, and returned four of them to slavery.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ فِي مَرَضِهِ «فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

[AI] That a man had freed six slaves that belonged to him before his death, so the Prophet ﷺ divided them among themselves and freed two of them while giving the remaining four a lighter punishment.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ «فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

[AI] A man freed six of his slaves before his death and he did not possess any wealth other than them, therefore the Messenger of Allah ﷺ decided to distribute them among themselves, freeing two and returning four to slavery.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ مَمْلُوكِينَ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرُهُمْ «فَأَقْرَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ»

[AI] There was a man who had six slaves, so he freed them upon his death. The Prophet ﷺ drew lots between them, thus freeing two and keeping four enslaved.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ لَهُ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ فَأَعْتَقَهُمْ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ «فَأَقْرَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

[AI] A man who freed six slaves and then his heirs came and did not find anything, so they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He said, "If I had known that, I would not have prayed upon him, if Allah wills." Then he mentioned six names amongst them and freed two and borrowed four.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ سِتَّةَ أَعْبُدٍ فَجَاءَ وَرَثَتُهُ فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا شَيْئًا فَأَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ «لَوْ عَلِمْتُ ذَاكَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ مَا صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ» فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَاسْتَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً

[AI] A man had freed a slave at his death, and his heirs from the Arab tribes came and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what he had done. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Why did he do that?" So, he struck a deal between them and freed two slaves, and returned four to bondage.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ أَعْبُدًا لَهُ سِتَّةً عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ فَجَاءَ وَرَثَتُهُ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ فَأَخْبَرُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَا صَنَعَ فَقَالَ «وَلِمَ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟» فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَعَتَقَ اثْنَيْنِ وَرَدَّ أَرْبَعَةً فِي الرِّقِّ

[AI] A man freed six slaves that he owned before his death. The Prophet ﷺ came to them and he divided them, freeing two of them while keeping the other four as slaves.

أَعْتَقَ رَجُلٌ سِتَّةَ غِلْمَةٍ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ فَأَتَى فِيهِمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «فَقَرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَقَرَعَ اثْنَانِ مِنْهُمْ فَأَعْتَقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اللَّذَيْنِ قَرَعَا وَأَرَقَّ أَرْبَعَةً»

This was brought to the attention of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . He divided them into three parts, then shook a pot containing lots between the parts. He freed one-third and raffled the remaining two-thirds. Muhammad ibn Sireen said, "If it had not been conveyed to me that this was the action of the Prophet ﷺ , I would have thought it was my own opinion."
