I asked Sa'id b. Jubair about fasting during Rajab. He said: Ibn 'Abbas told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast to such an extent that we thought that he would never break his fast; and he would go without fasting to such an extent that we thought he would never fast.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He will not fast.' And he used to fast Shaban, or most of Shaban."' '

عَنْ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ وَكَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ أَوْ عَامَّةَ شَعْبَانَ

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He does not want to break his fast.' And he used not to fast until we said: 'He does not want to fast."'

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ

That the Messenger of Allah used to fast continually and it ws said that he would not break his fast, and he used not to fast and it was said that he would not fast.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْرُدُ الصَّوْمَ فَيُقَالُ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ فَيُقَالُ لاَ يَصُومُ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we thought he would never stop fasting. And he used to not fast until we thought we would never fast. And he never fasted any complete month apart from Ramadan, from the time he came to Al- Madinah.”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ وَمَا صَامَ شَهْرًا مُتَتَابِعًا إِلاَّ رَمَضَانَ مُنْذُ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we thought he would never stop fasting. And he used to not fast until we thought we would never fast. And he never fasted any complete month apart from Ramadan, from the time he came to Al- Madinah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1711)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ وَمَا صَامَ شَهْرًا تَامًّا مُنْذُ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ إِلا رَمَضَانَ

[AI] About fasting in the month of Rajab, how do you see it? He said, Ibn Abbas narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we would say, "He does not break his fast," and he would break his fast until we would say, "He does not fast."

عَنْ صَوْمِ رَجَبٍ كَيْفَ تَرَى فِيهِ ؟ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to fast until it would be said, "He had kept fasting" and would break his fast until it would be said, "He had broken his fast."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ صَامَ صَامَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ أَفْطَرَ أَفْطَرَ

عَنْ صَوْمِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تَطَوُّعًا قَالَ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to fast until it was said that he had fasted, and he would break his fast until it was said that he had broken his fast.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ وقَدْ صَامَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to fast until it was said he would not break his fast, and he would break his fast until it was said he would not fast. And he used to observe the most fasting in the month of Sha'ban.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ لَا يَصُومُ وَكَانَ أَكْثَرُ صَوْمِهِ فِي شَعْبَانَ

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He will not fast.' And he used to fast Shaban, or most of Shaban."' ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2177)

عَنْ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ وَكَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ أَوْ عَامَّةَ شَعْبَانَ»

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He does not want to break his fast.' And he used not to fast until we said: 'He does not want to fast."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2347)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ»

That the Messenger of Allah used to fast continually and it ws said that he would not break his fast, and he used not to fast and it was said that he would not fast. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2359)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «كَانَ يَسْرُدُ الصَّوْمَ» فَيُقَالُ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ فَيُقَالُ لَا يَصُومُ

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast so much that we would say he does not break his fast, and he would break his fast so much that we would say he does not fast.

سَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ صَوْمِ رَجَبٍ كَيْفَ تَرَى فِيهِ؟

ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى أنبأ عِيسَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ يُونُسَ ثنا عُثْمَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَكِيمٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ صِيَامِ رَجَبٍ فَقَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ
