38. Marital Feast
"The drink most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the sweet, cool drink." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1895)
[Machine] Abdullah was brought a drink, so he said, "Offer it to Alqamah." He said, "I am fasting." Abdullah said, "Offer it to Al Aswad." He said, "I am fasting." Abdullah said, "Offer it to so-and-so." He said, "I am fasting." So all of them said, "I am fasting." Abdullah then said, "Indeed, I am not fasting." He took it and drank, then he said, "They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned." [Surah An-Nur, 37]
"The people have invented new drinks and I do not know what they are. I have not drunk anything for 20 years (or he said: 40 years) except water and Sawiq (barley gruel), and he did not mention Nabidh." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5755)
[Machine] The translation of the passage into English is: "Ali has been disagreeing about drinks, so I haven't had any drink except milk, honey, or water for twenty years."
I met 'A'isha and asked her about Nabidh (that was served to the Holy Prophet). 'A'isha called an Abyssinian maid (servant) and said: Ask her (about it) for it was he, who prepared the Nabidh for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Abyssinian (maid-servant) said: I prepared Nabidh for him in a waterskin in the night and tied its mouth and then suspended it; and when it was morning he (the Holy Prophet) drank from it. (Using translation from Muslim 2005a)
It was the night of Monday. He drank it on Monday and on Tuesday up to the afternoon, and If anything was left out of it he gave it to his servant or poured it out. (Using translation from Muslim 2004b)
[Machine] He would be rejected by the Prophet ﷺ throughout the evening, and then when morning came, he would spend his day and night at the midwife's place.
Nabidh of raisins would be made for him in a water skin in the morning, and he would drink it that night, and it would be made for him in the evening, and he would drink it in the morning. He would wash out the water skins and not leave any pieces or anything in them. Nafi' said: "We used to drink it like honey." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5740)
[Machine] Ibn 'Umar used to be given raisins for dinner, but he would drink them in the morning. He would also be given raisins for breakfast, but he would drink them in the evening.
[Machine] About wine, he said, "Abandon dinner and drink in the morning."
"I asked Abu Ja'far about Nabidh and he said: " 'Ali bin Husain, may Allah be pleased with him, would have Nabidh made for him at night, and he would drink it in the morning, and he would have Nabidh made in the morning and he would drink it at night.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5741)
"I asked Ubayy bin Ka'b about Nabidh, and he said: 'Drink water, drink honey, drink Sawiq (barley gruel) and drink milk that you have been nourished with since childhood.' I repeated the question and he said: 'Is it wine you want? Is it wine you want?'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5754)
"The people have invented drinks and I do not know what they are. I have not drunk anything for 20 years except water, milk and honey." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5756)
[Machine] That Omar wrote to Ammar bin Yasir. After that, he said...
[Machine] We arrived with Umar Al-Jabi'ah, and some paint similar to the color of silver was brought. It is only used in coating, not in drinking. So he said, "Indeed, in this (paint) there is an end."
[Machine] "I used to cook it for Abu Darda' until two-thirds of it were gone and one-third remained."
