I used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard Abu Qatada saying, "I too, used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "A good dream is from Allah, so if anyone of you saw a dream which he liked, he should not tell it to anybody except to the one whom he loves, and if he saw a dream which he disliked, then he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil and from the evil of Satan, and spit three times (on his left) and should not tell it to anybody, for it will not harm him. "  

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَلَمَةَ يَقُولُ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَى الرُّؤْيَا فَتُمْرِضُنِي حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ يَقُولُ وَأَنَا كُنْتُ لأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا تُمْرِضُنِي حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرُّؤْيَا الْحَسَنَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مَا يُحِبُّ فَلاَ يُحَدِّثْ بِهِ إِلاَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّ وَإِذَا رَأَى مَا يَكْرَهُ فَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلْيَتْفِلْ ثَلاَثًا وَلاَ يُحَدِّثْ بِهَا أَحَدًا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ  

I used to see dreams (and was so much perturbed) that I began to quiver and have temperature, but did not cover myself with a mantle. I met Abu Qatada and made a mention of that to him. He said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: A good vision comes from Allah and a (bad) dream (hulm) from devil. So when one of you sees a bad dream (hulm) which he does not like, he should spit on his left side thrice and seek refuge with Allah from its evil; then it will not harm him.  

كُنْتُ أَرَى الرُّؤْيَا أُعْرَى مِنْهَا غَيْرَ أَنِّي لاَ أُزَمَّلُ حَتَّى لَقِيتُ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرُّؤْيَا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا حَلَمَ أَحَدُكُمْ حُلْمًا يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفُثْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلاَثًا وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ  

A good vision is from Allah and a bad dream (hulm) is from the satan; so if one of you sees anything (in a dream) which he dislikes, he should spit on his left side thrice and seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and then it will never harm him. Abu Salama said: I used to see dreams weighing more heavily upon me than a mountain; but since I heard this hadith I don't care for it (its burden).  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرُّؤْيَا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ شَيْئًا يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفِثْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ كُنْتُ لأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا أَثْقَلَ عَلَىَّ مِنْ جَبَلٍ فَمَا هُوَ إِلاَّ أَنْ سَمِعْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فَمَا أُبَالِيهَا  

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman said, "I heard Abu Qatada ibn Ribiyy say that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The good dream is from Allah, and the bad dream is from shaytan. When you see what you dislike, spit to your left side three times when you wake up, and seek refuge with Allah from its evil. It will not harm you then, Allah willing.' " Abu Salama said, "I would see dreams which weighed on me more heavily than a mountain. When I heard this hadith, I was not concerned about it."  

يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الشَّىْءَ يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفُثْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ إِنْ كُنْتُ لأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا هِيَ أَثْقَلُ عَلَىَّ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فَمَا كُنْتُ أُبَالِيهَا  

I used to see (such horrible dreams) that I fell ill. I saw Abu Qatada who also said: I used to see dreams which made me sick until I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Good dreams are from Allah, so if any one of you sees which he likes he should not disclose it to one but whom he loves, but if he sees something which he does not like he should spit on his left side thrice and seek refuge with Allah from the mischief of the Satan and its mischief (i.e. of the dream), and he should not relate it to anyone, then it would not harm him. وَأَنَا فَكُنْتُ لَأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا تُمْرِضُنِي حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللهِ وَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مَا يُحِبُّ فَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بِهَا إِلَّا مَنْ يُحِبُّ وَإِذَا رَأَى مَا يَكْرَهُ فَلْيَتْفُلْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشَرِّهَا وَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بِهَا أَحَدًا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَضُرُّهُ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ لِيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ  

I used to see (such horrible dreams) that I fell ill. [Machine] I heard Abu Qatadah saying, "I used to see dreams that would make me sick until I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'Good dreams are from Allah, so if any one of you sees a dream that he likes, he should narrate it to the one whom he loves. And if he sees a dream that he dislikes, he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil and should not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him.'"

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «الرُّؤْيَا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الشَّيْءَ يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفُثْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ» قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ «إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا هِيَ أَثْقَلُ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مَا كُنْتُ أُبَالِيهَا»  

I heard the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) say: A good vision comes from Allah and a dream (hulm) from the devil, so when one of you sees what he dislikes, he must spit on his left (three times), and seek refuge in Allah from its evil. It will then not harm him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5021)   

وَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «الرُّؤْيَا فِي حَدِيثِ الْحَارِثِ الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللهِ وَالْحُلُمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الشَّيْءَ يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفِثْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ مِنْ شَرَّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَنْ تَضُرَّهُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ»  

[Machine] "If I see a dream that makes me sick, I go to Abu Qatada and he says, 'If anyone of you sees something he likes, let him tell only those whom he loves. If he sees something he dislikes, let him swoon three times to his left and seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan and from its evil, and not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him.'" 10665 Ahmad bin Sulaiman reported to us, Ubaidullah reported to us from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Salama, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sees a dream that pleases him" - it is Marfu'.  

إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا فَتُمْرِضُنِي فَغَدَوْتُ عَلَى أَبِي قَتَادَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ لَأَرَى الرُّؤْيَا فَتُمْرِضُنِي حَتَّى سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مَا يُحِبُّ فَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بِهَا إِلَّا مَنْ يُحِبُّ وَإِذَا رَأَى مَا يَكْرَهُ فَلْيَتْفُلْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَشَرِّهَا ثَلَاثًا وَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بِهَا أَحَدًا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَضُرُّهُ» 10665 أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ رَأَى رُؤْيَا تُعْجِبُهُ» مُرْسَلٌ  

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "A good dream is a glad tidings from Allah, while a bad dream is from Satan. So if anyone of you sees a bad dream which he dislikes, then he should spit on his left side three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan, for it will not harm him." Abu Salamah said, "I used to see dreams that would make me sick, till I heard Abu Qatadah talking about the Rukyah (incantation). [Sahih al-Bukhari]  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ بُشْرَى مِنَ اللهِ وَالْحُلُمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا حَلَمَ أَحَدُكُمْ حُلُمًا يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَتْفُلْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَضُرُّهُ» قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ إِنْ كَانَتِ الرُّؤْيَا لَتُضْجِعُنِي حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ حَدِيثَ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ  

"الرُّؤيَا الصَّالحِةُ مِنَ الله ﷻ فَإِذَا رَأى أَحَدُكُمْ مَا يُحِبُّ فَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بهَا إلا مَنْ يُحِبُّ، وَإِذَا رأى مَا يَكْرَهُ فَليتْفُل عَنْ يَسَاره ثَلاثًا، وَلْيَتَعَوَّذ باللهِ مِن شَرِّ الشَّيطَان الرَّجيم، وشرِّها، ولا يُحَدِّثْ بها أَحدًا، فإِنها لا تَضُرُّه".  

"الرُّؤيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ الله، وَالحُلْمُ مِنْ الشَّيطَان. فَإِذَا رَأى أَحَدُكُمْ شَيئًا يَكْرَهه فَليَنْفُثْ حِينَ يَسْتَيقِظ عَنْ يَسَارِه ثَلَاثًا وليتعَوَّذ بالله مِنْ شَرِّهَا فَإِنَّها لَا تَضُرُّه".
