[Machine] He heard it from the Messenger of Allah, so I asked Ali ibn Abi Talib, Zubair ibn Al-Awam, and Talha ibn Ubaidullah about it, and they instructed him to do so.  

البيهقي:٧٧٢ – وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ حَفْصٍ الْمُقْرِئُ بِبَغْدَادَ ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ دُحَيْمٍ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرْزَةَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى أنا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ يُجَامِعُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَلَمْ يُمْنِ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ يَتَوَضَّأُ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلَاةِ وَيَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ وَذَكَرَ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ وَطَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ فَأَمَرُوهُ بِذَلِكَ  

أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ حَفْصٍ عَنْ شَيْبَانَ وَذَكَرَ فِيهِمْ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ

What do you think if a man has intercourse with his wife but does not ejaculate? ʿUthmanؓ Said. He should do wudooʿ as for prayer and wash his private part. And ʿUthman ؓ said: I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; I asked ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, az-Zubair bin al-ʿ Awwam, Talhah bin ʿUbaidullah and Ubayy bin Kaʿb about that, and they told him to do the same.
