bukhari:179 – Saʿd b. Ḥafṣ > Shaybān > Yaḥyá > Abū Salamah > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār > Zayd b. Khālid

I asked ʿUthman bin ʿAffan about a person who engaged in intercourse but did no discharge. ʿUthman replied, "He should perform ablution like the one for an ordinary prayer but he must wash his penis." ʿUthman added, "I heard it from Messenger of Allah ﷺ." I asked ʿAli Az-Zubair, Talha and Ubai bin Kaʿb about it and they, too, gave the same reply. (This order was canceled later on and taking a bath became necessary for such cases).

What do you think if a man has intercourse with his wife but does not ejaculate? ʿUthmanؓ Said. He should do wudooʿ as for prayer and wash his private part. And ʿUthman ؓ said: I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; I asked ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, az-Zubair bin al-ʿ Awwam, Talhah bin ʿUbaidullah and Ubayy bin Kaʿb about that, and they told him to do the same.

"عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِد الْجُهَنِىِّ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ قُلتُ: أَرَأَيْتَ إِذَا جَامَعَ الرَّجُلُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَلَمْ يُمْنِ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: يَتَوضَّأُ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلَاةِ وَيَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ، وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: سَمِعْتُ (*) مِنْ رسُولِ الله ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ علىَّ بْنَ أَبِى طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبيْرَ ابْنَ الْعَوَّامِ، وَطَلحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ الله، وَأُبَىَّ بْنَ كعْبٍ فَأَمَرُونِى بِذَلِكَ".
