I remember being present on the Day of the Tree, and the Prophet ﷺ was taking the oath of the people and I was holding a twig of the tree over his head. We were fourteen hundred (in number). We did not take oath to the death, but to the effect that we would not run away from the battlefield.

لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي يَوْمَ الشَّجَرَةِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُبَايِعُ النَّاسَ وَأَنَا رَافِعٌ غُصْنًا مِنْ أَغْصَانِهَا عَنْ رَأْسِهِ وَنَحْنُ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ مِائَةً قَالَ لَمْ نُبَايِعْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ وَلَكِنْ بَايَعْنَاهُ عَلَى أَنْ لاَ نَفِرَّ

[Machine] "Then the people pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of Hudaybiyah while he was sitting under the tree, and I was holding a branch from its branches away from his face. We did not pledge allegiance to him upon death, but we pledged to not flee. They were one thousand four hundred (people) that day."

«ثُمَّ بَايَعَ النَّاسُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَمَنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ وَهُوَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَنَا رَافِعٌ غُصْنًا مِنْ أَغْصَانِهَا عَنْ وَجْهِهِ فَلَمْ نُبَايِعْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ وَلَكِنْ بَايَعْنَاهُ عَلَى أَنْ لَا نَفِرَّ وَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَلْفٌ وَأَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ»

[Machine] "I saw myself on the day of the tree, and the Prophet ﷺ was taking the pledge of allegiance from the people, while I was raising a branch from its branches over his head. We did not pledge him upon death, but we pledged him that we would not flee."
