53. Fighting Rebellion (2/6)
[Machine] I was never eager for leadership, neither by day nor by night. I was not interested in it, nor did I ask Allah for it, privately or publicly. But I feared discord, and I have no comfort in leadership. However, I was entrusted with a great responsibility that I am not capable of handling and it can only be fulfilled with the strength from Allah. If I wished, the strongest of people would have accepted my position today, but the immigrants accepted what they said and offered no excuses. Ali and Zubair said, "We were only angry because we were excluded from the consultation, and we believe that Abu Bakr is the most deserving person after the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . He is the companion in the cave and the second of two. Indeed, we recognize his honor and greatness, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , commanded him to lead the people in prayer while he was alive."

[Machine] On the day I was appointed as a messenger of Allah, I said to him, may ﷺ , and to Al-As'a: I wish that this had happened while I am alive, so that I could pray for you and bury you. She said: I said to him, could it be that I am one of the women you are marrying on that day? He said: As for me and Al-As'a, pray for me and your father and brother until I write a letter for Abu Bakr, for I fear that he might wish and someone might say, ‘God and the believers accept only Abu Bakr.’
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was approached by a woman who spoke to him about something. He instructed her to come back to him. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if I come back and I do not find you?" It seemed that she meant death. He said, "If you do not find me, then go to Abu Bakr and convey this statement of mine to him."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Follow the example of those who came after me, Abu Bakr and Umar, and seek guidance from the guidance of Ammar. And hold tight to the covenant of Ibn Umm Abd.'"
[Machine] "Follow those who come after me, meaning Abu Bakr and Umar."
[Machine] Narrator Abu Qatadah reported that when the Prophet ﷺ fell behind his companions during a journey, he asked them, "What do you see the people doing?" Then he said, "The people have lost their Prophet." Abu Bakr and Umar said, "O Prophet of Allah, if after you Abu Bakr and Umar survive, there was no need for anyone else to survive." The people said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is among you. If you follow Abu Bakr and Umar, you will be rightly guided."
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "While I was sleeping, I saw myself standing at a well, on it there was a bucket. I drew water from the well as much as Allah wished. Then Ibn Abi Quhafa (i.e. Abu Bakr) took the bucket from me and brought out one or two buckets (of water) and there was weakness in his drawing the water. May Allah forgive his weakness for him. Then the bucket turned into a very big one and Ibn Al-Khattab took it over and I had never seen such a mighty person amongst the people as him in performing such hard work, till the people drank to their satisfaction and watered their camels that knelt down there." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3664)
about the Prophet's dream in which he has seen Abu Bakr and ʿUmar: The Prophet ﷺ said, "I saw (in a dream) that the people had gathered. Then Abu Bakr stood up and pulled out one or two buckets full of water (from a well) and there was weakness in his pulling -- may Allah forgive him. Then Ibn Al- Khattab stood up, and the bucket turned into a very large one and I have never seen any strong man among the people doing such a hard job. He pulled out so much water that the people (drank to their satisfaction) and watered their camels to their fill, (and then after quenching their thirst) they sat beside the water." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7020)

[Machine] Abu Amr al-Bistami informed us that Abu Bakr al-Ismaili informed us that Abu Ya'la reported to us on the authority of Mus'ab al-Zubairi, who reported on the authority of al-Mughirah bin Abdul Rahman al-Hizami, who reported on the authority of Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Hind, who reported on the authority of Nafi', who reported on the authority of Ibn Umar, that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , appointed Zaid bin Harithah in the battle of Mu'tah. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "If Zaid is killed, then Ja'far, and if Ja'far is killed, then Abdullah bin Rawahah." Abdullah said, "I was with them in that battle, so we sought Ja'far and found him among the dead. We found about ninety-four wounds and injuries on his body."

[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Zaid, Jafar, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah, and he entrusted the flag to Zaid, so they were all injured. Anas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised them to the people before the news reached him." He said, "Zaid took the flag and was injured, then Jafar took it and was injured, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah took it and was injured, then the flag was taken by Khalid ibn Walid with one of Allah's swords." He said, "So he started narrating to the people and his eyes were shedding tears."

The Prophet ﷺ sent an army under the command of Usama bin Zaid. When some people criticized his leadership, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you are criticizing Usama's leadership, you used to criticize his father's leadership before. By Allah! He was worthy of leadership and was one of the dearest persons to me, and (now) this (i.e. Usama) is one of the dearest to me after him (i.e. Zaid). (Using translation from Bukhārī 3730)

"Qais bin Sa'd used to be, to the Prophet ﷺ, in the position of the head of police for a ruler." (One of the narrators) Al-Ansari said: "That is: Due to his affairs that he takes charge of." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3850)

" 0 you who believe, obey Allah, His Apostle and those in authority from amongst You" (iv. 59) -was revealed in respect of 'Abdullah b. Hudhafa b. Qais b. Adi al-Sahmi who was despatched by the Prophet ﷺ as leader of a military campaign. The narrator said: He was informed of this fact by Ya'la b. Muslim who was informed by Sa'id b. Jubair who in turn was informed by Ibn Abbas. (Using translation from Muslim 1834)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever obeys me has indeed obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has indeed disobeyed Allah. Whoever obeys my commander has indeed obeyed me, and whoever disobeys my commander has indeed disobeyed me."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7142)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised me to listen and obey, even if it is from a slave who has his limbs cut off.
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "Listening and obeying is upon the Muslim concerning what they love and hate as long as they are not commanded to disobey. But if they are commanded to disobey, then there is no listening or obeying."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ sent out a military expedition and appointed a man in charge of them, commanding them to obey him. He kindled a fire for them and commanded them to enter it, so some people thought they should do it, while others said they had fled from the fire and refused. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they told him about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If they had entered it, they would have remained in it until the Day of Resurrection, for there is no obedience in disobedience to Allah. Obedience is only in what is good.”
53.12 [Machine] Encouragement to adhere to the community and emphasis on those who withdraw from obedience
The people used to ask Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil for fear that it might overtake me. Once I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We were in ignorance and in evil and Allah has bestowed upon us the present good; will there by any evil after this good?" He said, "Yes." I asked, "Will there be good after that evil?" He said, "Yes, but it would be tained with Dakhan (i.e. Little evil)." I asked, "What will its Dakhan be?" He said, "There will be some people who will lead (people) according to principles other than my tradition. You will see their actions and disapprove of them." I said, "Will there by any evil after that good?" He said, "Yes, there will be some people who will invite others to the doors of Hell, and whoever accepts their invitation to it will be thrown in it (by them)." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Describe those people to us." He said, "They will belong to us and speak our language" I asked, "What do you order me to do if such a thing should take place in my life?" He said, "Adhere to the group of Muslims and their Chief." I asked, "If there is neither a group (of Muslims) nor a chief (what shall I do)?" He said, "Keep away from all those different sects, even if you had to bite (i.e. eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in that state." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3606)

One who defected from obedience (to the Amir) and separated from the main body of the Muslims - if he died in that state-would die the death of one belonging to the days of Jahiliyya (i.e. would not die as a Muslim). One who fights under the banner of a people who are blind (to the cause for which they are fighting, i.e. do not know whether their cause is just or otherwise), who gets flared up with family pride, calls (people) to fight for their family honour, and supports his kith and kin (i.e. fights not for the cause of Allah but for the sake of this family or tribe) - if he is killed (in this fight), he dies as one belonging to the days of Jahiliyya. Whoso attacks my Ummah (indiscriminately) killing the righteous and the wicked of them, sparing not (even) those staunch in faith and fulfilling not his promise made with those who have been given a pledge of security - he has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with him. (Using translation from Muslim 1848a)

Whoever separates himself from the congregation by the span of a hand has removed the bond of Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls to an ignorant way, then he is from the dwellers of Hell." A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, even if he observes fasts and performs prayers?" He said, "Yes, even if he observes fasts and performs prayers. So, invoke with the supplication of Allah that He has given you the name Muslim believers, worshippers of Allah."

Messenger of Allah, no doubt, we had an evil time (i. e. the days of Jahiliyya or ignorance) and God brought us a good time (i. e. I said: Will there be a bad time after good time? He said: Yes. I said: How? Whereupon he said: There will be leaders who will not be led by my guidance and who will not adopt my ways? There will be among them men who will have the hearts of devils in the bodies of human beings. I said: What should I do. Messenger of Allah, if I (happen) to live in that time? He replied: You will listen to the Amir and carry out his orders; even if your back is flogged and your wealth is snatched, you should listen and obey. (Using translation from Muslim 1847b)

One who has a governor appointed over him and he finds that the governor indulges in an act of disobedience to God, he should condemn the governor's act, in disobedience to God, but should not withdraw himself from his obedience. Ibn Jabir said: Ruzaiq narrated to me this hadith. I asked him: Abu Miqdam, have you heard it from Muslim b. Qaraza or did he describe it to you and he heard it from 'Auf (b. Upon this Ruzaiq sat upon his knees and facing the Qibla said: By Allah, besides Whom there is no other God, I heard it from Muslim b. Qaraza and he said that te had heard it from Auf (b. [Machine] Indeed, we have pledged allegiance to this man for the sake of Allah and His Messenger. And verily, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, the treacherous person will have a flag raised for him on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: 'This is the treachery of so-and-so.' And indeed, one of the greatest forms of treachery after associating partners with Allah is for a person to pledge allegiance to another person for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and then he breaks his allegiance. And neither should any of you fight with others to gain power nor should one of you envy others in this matter, for it will lead to division between me and him."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three persons whom Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will he purify them and theirs shall be a severe punishment. They are: -1. A man possessed superfluous water, on a way and he withheld it from travelers. -2. A man who gave a pledge of allegiance to a ruler and he gave it only for worldly benefits. If the ruler gives him something he gets satisfied, and if the ruler withholds something from him, he gets dissatisfied. -3. And man displayed his goods for sale after the ʿAsr prayer and he said, 'By Allah, except Whom None has the right to be worshipped, I have been given so much for my goods,' and somebody believes him (and buys them). The Prophet ﷺ then recited: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths." (3.77) (Using translation from Bukhārī 2358)

O my son, I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The worst of guardians is the cruel ruler. Beware of being one of them. Ubaidullah said (to him out of arrogance): Sit you down. You are from the chaff of the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ. A'idh said: Was there worthless chaff among them? Such worthless chaff appeared after them and among other people.
