53. Fighting Rebellion
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "My Ummah will split into two groups, and a rebellious faction will pass through them that the righteous group should kill."
[Machine] From the Prophet of Allah ﷺ: Indeed, there will emerge among my nation a group of people who are fierce and devout. Their tongues are well-versed in the Quran, to the point that the Quran does not go beyond their throats. Verily, when you see them, treat them with kindness. And when you encounter them, treat them with kindness. For the one who kills them will be rewarded.
ʿAli ؓ said: When I narrate to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it would be dearer to me to be thrown down from the sky than to tell lies about him. But if I narrate to you from anyone else, then I am a warrior and war is deceit. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿThere will emerge at the end of time people who are young in age and immature. They will speak like the best of people but their faith will go no deeper than their throats. Wherever you encounter them, kill them, for killing them brings to the one who kills them reward with Allah on the Day of Resurrection.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 616)
[Machine] I was with my father Ummamah when heads from the heads of the Khawarij were brought, and they were placed on the steps of Damascus. Ummamah said, "Dogs of the Fire" three times, those who are killed under the shade of the heavens are better than those who kill them and they kill him. She said it three times. I said, "Is this something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or something you say based on your own opinion?" She said, "If that is the case, then I am bold. Rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."
[Machine] I was in Sham (Damascus) when Al-Muhallab sent sixty heads of the Khawarij and they were stationed at the steps of Damascus. I was on the back of my house when Abu Umamah passed by, so I got down and followed him. When he stood in front of them, tears welled up in his eyes and he said, "Glory be to Allah! How does Satan influence the sons of Adam three times? The dogs of Hell, the dogs of Hell, the worst of killers under the shade of the sky, three times! The best of those who kill are those who kill them, and blessed are those who kill them or are killed by them." Then he turned to me and said, "O Abu Galib, may Allah protect you from them." I said, "I saw you cried when you saw them." He said, "I cried out of mercy when I saw them. They used to be Muslims. Do you recite Surah Al-Imran?" I said, "Yes." Then he recited, "It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding." (Al-Imran 7) until it reaches, "And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed" (Al-Imran 105) until it reaches, "But as for those who were destined to be prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure" (Al-Imran 107). I said, "Are they the ones you were referring to, O Abu Umamah?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Before you, did you ever say anything or hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Then I would be wrong (to say so), but I heard him say this, not once or twice, until he counted seven. Then he said, 'The Children of Israel divided into seventy-one sects, and this nation will divide into seventy-two, all of which are in the Fire except one, which is the Jama'ah (main body).' I said, 'O Abu Umamah, don't you see what they are doing?' He said, 'Upon them is what they bear, and upon you is what you bear.'"

[Machine] There is a man among them who has a paralyzed hand or a crippled hand or a disfigured hand. If you do not cut it off, I will inform you of what Allah has ordained on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ about those who killed them. Ubaydah said, "So I said to Ali, 'Did you hear this from the Prophet ﷺ ?' He said, 'Yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, three times.'" Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There have been a group of people who rejected fighting against the rebellious faction and said that the rebellious faction are disbelievers and not Muslims. They claimed that it is not permissible to fight against Muslims, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The blood of a Muslim may not be shed except in three cases: a person who reverts to disbelief after becoming Muslim, a married person who commits adultery, and a person who kills someone, so he is to be killed in return." They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited shedding blood except in these cases, so it is not permissible to shed blood except in these cases. They considered fighting against Muslims as killing them, because fighting leads to killing. Ash-Shafi'i said: It is said to them that Allah commanded fighting against the rebellious group and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also commanded that. Fighting is not killing by its nature, because sometimes it is permissible to fight against a Muslim but killing him is not permissible. Similarly, it is permissible to injure him or strike him, but it is not permissible to kill him. Then he mentioned that the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not object to Ali's fighting against the Khawarij, but they objected to his fighting against the people of Basra and the people of Sham. They disliked it and did not dislike his treatment of the Khawarij. The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is how...

He said, 'Narrated to us Ibrahim ibn Marzooq, from Abu Dawud, from Shu'bah, from Khalid Al-Hadha', from Al-Hasan ibn Abi Al-Hasan, from his mother, from Umm Salamah, she mentioned something similar. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Ishaaq ibn Mansoor narrated to us, Abdul Samad ibn Abdul Warith mentioned it in a similar manner, except that he said it was from Sa'id ibn Abi Al-Hasan and Al-Hasan from their mother."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He will be killed by the rebellious group." Then 'Amr stood up, trembling with anger, and went to Mu'awiyah. He said, "Amr has been killed!" Mu'awiyah asked, "Did you kill him?" 'Amr replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say that he will be killed by the rebellious group." Mu'awiyah said, "Did you doubt us? Indeed, it was 'Ali and his companions who killed him. They brought him until they threw him among our spears, or as he said, swords. This is the statement of As-Sakkariy, and in the narration of Ibn Bishran, he said, "Then 'Amr stood up, terrified, and went back to Mu'awiyah. Mu'awiyah asked, "What's wrong with you?" 'Amr replied, "Amr has been killed," and then he mentioned him (Amr) again.
