2. Menstruation (4/4)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not a menstruation cycle but a vein, so wash and recite the words of Rabee'ah. In another narration from Harmalah, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was consulted about this, and he said, "This is not menstruation but a vein, so wash and pray." Aisha said, "I used to wash at every prayer in a corner of the room of her sister Zainab bint Jahsh until the water became tinged red with blood." Ibn Shihab said, "Abu Bakr Ibn Abdur Rahman Ibn Al-Harith Ibn Hisham narrated this to us and said, 'May Allah have mercy on Hind, if she had heard this ruling, by Allah, she would have wept because she used to not pray.'" Muslim narrated it in Sahih from Muhammad Ibn Salamah from Ibn Wahb. Al-Bukhari also narrated it from the Hadith of Ibn Abi Dhib from Az-Zuhri without mentioning Hind's story. Al-Awza'i narrated it from Az-Zuhri from both of them. And Ibrahim Ibn Saad narrated it from Az-Zuhri from Amrah from Aisha, and Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated it to us from Abu Ahmad Ibn Abi Al-Hasan informing us that Abdullah Ibn Muhammad Al-Baghawi narrated it. And Muhammad Ibn Jafar Al-WarkanI narrated it similarly.

[Machine] Narrated Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said that she consulted Umm Habiba bint Jahsh, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said, "I am experiencing Istihadah (continuous bleeding outside of the normal menstruation period), and I do not become pure. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Indeed, that is a vein, so perform ablution and then pray.' So she used to perform ablution for every prayer." Al-Layth said, "Ibn Shihab did not mention that the Prophet ﷺ commanded Umm Habiba bint Jahsh to perform ablution for every prayer, but it was something she did on her own."
[Machine] Indeed, it is not menstruation but rather a discharge from the uterus. So, she should count the days of her usual menstrual cycle, during which she used to menstruate. During this time, she should refrain from praying, and then perform ablution before each prayer and pray. Abu Bakr said: Some of our scholars considered the news of Ibn Al-Had as unreliable. The Shaykh said: And it has been
[Machine] It was narrated that Umm Habibah bint Jash was experiencing Istihadah (continuous or intermittent bleeding outside of menstruation) during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He instructed her to perform the ritual bath (ghusl) before every prayer. Abu Dawud and Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisii narrated this hadith, although I have not heard it directly from them. Sulaiman ibn Kathir narrated it from al-Zuhri, who narrated it from Urwah, who narrated it from Aisha. Zainab bint Jash also experienced Istihadah, and the Prophet ﷺ instructed her to perform the ritual bath before every prayer. Abu Dawud and Abdus Samad al-Ya'liii narrated this hadith, although this narration from Abdus Samad is doubtful. The saying attributed to Abu al-Walid is also not well-preserved, according to the scholar.
[Machine] Zainab, the daughter of Jash, menstruated for seven years, during which she would fill a container with water and immerse herself in it until the water turned red due to the blood. She then consulted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who told her that it was not menstruation but a vein. He advised her to perform ablution (wudu) and pray, as there was no obligation to perform ghusl (full body washing) for every prayer. This ruling was in accordance with the narrations of Al-Zuhri and the narration of Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Al-Zuhri. Other narrations that contradict it are incorrect. This is supported by the authentic narration from Urwah ibn Malik, from Aisha.
[Machine] Indeed, Umm Habibah bint Jahsh, who was under the care of Abdur Rahman ibn Auf, complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about bleeding. He told her to wait as long as her menstruation used to detain her, then perform ablution. Thus, she would perform ablution after every prayer from her own accord. These two authentic narrations clarify that the Prophet ﷺ did not command her to perform ablution after every prayer, rather she did it on her own. So, how can the command to perform ablution after every prayer be confirmed from the hadith of Urwah?
[Machine] To take a single full bath, then perform ablution afterwards for prayer 1645. And Abu Sa'id ibn Abi 'Amr informed us, narrated to us Abu al-'Abbas al-Asamm, I, ar-Rabi', informed ash-Shafi'i, informed Malik, who mentioned it similarly, except that he said, "Then perform ablution afterwards for every prayer." And Abu Mu'awiyah narrated it from Hisham ibn 'Urwah from his father with similar meaning.
[Machine] She only saw one washing on the menstruating woman, and we have narrated from what was mentioned about the stolen garment belonging to Aisha, which indicates this.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded her to perform ablution before every prayer and to pray likewise.
[Machine] That Um Habibah bint Jahsh asked the Prophet ﷺ , and said, "I am menstruating." So he ordered her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) after every prayer, and to pray. Al-Awza'i narrated it from Yahya, and he mentioned that the woman who was experiencing menstruation was Zainab bint Umm Salamah.
[Machine] Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Abdullah Al-Susi informed us saying: Abu Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us from Saeed ibn Uthman from Bishr ibn Bakr from Al-Awzai from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir who said: Abu Salama and Ikrimah, the slave of Ibn Abbas, narrated to me that Zainab bint Umm Salamah used to perform itikaf (spiritual retreat) with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , while she was experiencing menstrual bleeding. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , ordered her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) for each prayer. And it has been narrated from another source, different from Ikrimah, regarding this matter.
[Machine] That Um Habiba bint Jahsh sought permission for ʼistihaada (abnormal bleeding outside the menstrual period), so she asked the Prophet ﷺ, and he commanded her to wait for the days that her menstrual cycles were known and then perform ghusl (ritual bath) or offer salah (prayer). Then, if she sees anything after that, she should perform wudhu (ablution), seek istikhaarah (divine guidance), perform ghusl, and pray. This is also a well-established hadith, closer to the hadith of Aisha regarding ghusl. The hadith of Aisha from a definitive source is more likely to be authentic. We have also narrated from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman that she performed only one ghusl and made wudhu, which is not contradictory to what the Prophet ﷺ narrated from her.
[Machine] She takes a single shower, then performs ablution, and then another narration of it comes from another perspective.
[Machine] The passage states that a woman was experiencing Istihadah (non-menstrual bleeding) during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . The Prophet instructed her to delay performing the noon (Dhuhr) prayer and hasten the afternoon (Asr) prayer. He also advised her to perform ablution for both of them (noon and afternoon prayers). As for the evening (Maghrib) and night (Isha) prayers, he advised her to hasten the Maghrib prayer and delay the Isha prayer, and to perform ablution for both of them (evening and night prayers). And so on.
[Machine] It was narrated that a woman had her menstrual cycle during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so she was instructed to delay the Dhuhr prayer and hasten the Asr prayer. She was also instructed to perform ghusl (ritual bath) for them. As for Maghrib and Isha prayers, she was to delay the former and hasten the latter, and perform ghusl for them. She was also to perform ghusl for Fajr prayer. And so on...
[Machine] A woman in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, experienced istihaadhah (abnormal bleeding outside of menstruation). She was given the command to delay the zuhr (noon) prayer, hasten the asr (afternoon) prayer, perform one ghusl (ritual bath) for both prayers, delay the maghrib (evening) prayer, hasten the isha (night) prayer, and perform one ghusl for both prayers. She was also instructed to perform ghusl for the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated this hadith from Shu'bah. He said, "I asked 'Abdur-Rahman about the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' He said, 'I do not narrate anything from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' Nadhr ibn Shumail also narrated this hadith from Shu'bah, and Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar narrated it from 'Abdur-Rahman. Shu'bah disagreed with regards to the elevation (raising of the voice) of the Prophet and called the woman experiencing istihaadhah as 'al-mustahadhah'."
[Machine] That Safiya bint Suhail got her menses and came to the Prophet ﷺ who ordered her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) after every prayer. When that became difficult for her, he ordered her to combine the dhuhr (midday) and asr (afternoon) prayers with one ghusl and the maghrib (sunset) and isha (night) prayers with one ghusl, and to perform ghusl for fajr (dawn) prayer. This is the wording of a hadith from Abu Ali, and in the hadith of Abu Abdullah, narrated from Aisha, she said, "Indeed, she is Safiya bint Suhail, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to order her to perform ghusl after every prayer. When it became difficult for her, he ordered her to perform ghusl with each two prayers." The wording was narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq, and some of our scholars did not deem it valid except for Muhammad ibn Ishaq, and Shu'bah did not mention the Prophet ﷺ and denied that the hadith is elevated (to the Prophet). He also made a mistake in naming the woman who is experiencing menstruation. Abu Bakr said, "The narrators have disagreed about the isnad (chain of transmission) of this hadith." The Sheikh, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "It was narrated by Shu'bah and Muhammad ibn Ishaq as mentioned earlier, and it was also narrated by Ibn Uyaynah, but he disagreed with Muhammad in its elevation (to the Prophet). It was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, that is, Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq, that is, Abdullah, meaning the son of Muhammad. Ishaq informed us, that is, Sufyan reported, from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Qasim, from his father, that a Muslim woman experienced menstruation, so she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for clarification." This was narrated by Ath-Thawri, from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Qasim, from his father, from Zainab bint Jahsh.

[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed Fatimah, the daughter of Abu Hubaysh, experienced istihādah since this and that time, and she did not perform her prayers." He said, "Glory be to Allah, this is from Satan to make her sit in a place." So, she sat there until we saw a yellow discharge on the water. He said, "She should perform one ritual bath for ẓuhr and ʿaṣr, then another one for maghrib and ʿishā', then another one for fajr. Between those, she should perform ablution." This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and in the narration of Abu Ali, it is mentioned that she should sit in a place. When she sees yellow discharge on the water, she should perform a ritual bath, and it is mentioned like this.

[Machine] Abu Asim al-Nabīl narrated to us, Uthman ibn Sa'd al-Qurashi narrated to us, Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: "My aunt, Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh, went to Aisha and said, 'I fear that I will fall into the Fire because I leave out the optional prayers. I only pray the obligatory prayers.' Aisha said, 'Wait until the Prophet ﷺ comes.' When he came, Aisha said, 'This is Fatimah who says such and such.' The Prophet ﷺ said to her, 'Tell her to leave out the prayer in the middle of each month for a few days and then purify herself with a single washing every day, and perform purification before every prayer. And let her clean herself and apply scent, for it is only a temporary condition caused either by the devil, a race of the blood, or an interrupted stream.' Umar ibn Shabbah narrated this from Abu Asim just like this, and he said, 'Then after that, perform purification before every prayer.' Others disagree with Uthman ibn Sa'd."

[Machine] "It was her menstruation, so she went to the mother of the believers, Aisha, and mentioned it to her. The Prophet ﷺ then entered and she said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Fatimah mentioned that she experiences menstruation.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Tell Fatimah to refrain from praying during each month for the duration of her menstrual cycle and then count the days of her period before it comes again. After that, she should perform one purification ritual (ghusl) and then she will be pure for every prayer.'"

[Machine] His Aunt Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh had experienced istihaadah (irregular bleeding) and had stopped praying for some time. So she went to Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha and mentioned this to her. The Prophet ﷺ entered and Aisha told him what Fatimah had said. The Prophet ﷺ said to tell Fatimah that she should refrain from praying for the duration of each menstrual cycle, then she should perform one complete washing (ghusl) before each prayer.

[Machine] That his aunt, Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh, experienced postpartum bleeding and refrained from praying for a while. She then went to the Prophet's wife, Aisha, and informed her of this, narrating a story. The Prophet, ﷺ , said: "Tell Fatimah to abstain from prayer for the number of days she missed praying. Once those days have passed, she should perform one complete ritual bath, enter the mosque, and cleanse herself. Then, after every prayer, she should perform ablution and pray. If she experiences a sudden urge, interrupted bleeding, or any ailment, Othman ibn Sa'd said that he asked Hisham ibn Urwa who narrated this from his father who reported it from Aisha. The sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, stated that it was also narrated from al-Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah who narrated it from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, but their narrations are not reliable. Othman ibn Sa'd, the scribe, is not strong in narration. He was Yahya ibn Sa'id and Yahya ibn Ma'een who were weak in their authority, and this was also narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah.

[Machine] Fatimah bint Qays asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a woman who experiences menstrual bleeding, and how she should act. He replied, "She should abstain from prayer for the number of days of her regular menstrual cycle, then she should perform ghusl (ritual bath) on every day of purity and offer her prayers accordingly."
[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about menstruation, and he said: "She should sit during the days of her menstrual period, then she should purify herself after every menstrual discharge, then she should perform Ghusl (ritual bath), then she should pray." Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq Ja'far ibn Sulaiman said: "There is some discrepancy regarding this narration. Ibn Jurayj and Abu Zubayr do not know this narration from any other source. And with a similar narration, there is no strong evidence. There is a difference of opinion regarding it." The sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "And it has been narrated from Ali that she should perform Ghusl every day, and in one narration, after every prayer. And it has been narrated from Ibn Abbas that she should perform Ghusl after every prayer, and in another narration, when the Ghusl becomes intense, he ordered her to combine between the two prayers. And it has been narrated from Ibn Umar and Anas ibn Malik that she should perform Ghusl from one state of purity to another. And in one narration from Aisha, similar to that, and in another narration, Ghusl every day. And in another narration from Ali, Ibn Abbas, and Aisha, Wudhu' for every prayer. And in what has been permitted to me by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafidh, narrating from him, from Abu Al-Abbas, from Ar-Rabi'ah, from Ash-Shafi'i, he said: "And in the narration of Humaynah, the Prophet ﷺ said to her: "If you are strong, then combine between Dhuhr and Asr prayers with one Ghusl, and between Maghrib and Isha prayers with one Ghusl, and pray Fajr with one Ghusl." And I inform her that these are the most beloved things to him for her, and that the first matter is sufficient for her, which is to purify herself after the menstrual discharge, and then he did not command her to perform Ghusl afterward. He said: "And if a suspended narration has been reported regarding menstruation, then the narration of Humaynah clarifies that it is a choice, and that a person is excused for not doing it."

[Machine] Zaid experienced such an intense urge to urinate until he could no longer control it. He would try to hold it in as much as he could, but when the urge became overwhelming, he would perform ablution (wudu) and pray. It has been narrated that there is a hadith with a weak chain of narrators that mentions a similar situation.

Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad as-Sufi narrated to us, and I am Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi, narrated to us Abu Ya'la, narrated to us Suwayd, narrated to us Baqiyyah, from 'Abd al-Malik, who mentioned it with his chain of narration that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'I have hemorrhoids and whenever I perform ablution, they bleed.' Then the remaining part of the narration is mentioned similarly. Abu Ahmad said, 'This is a rejected narration, and I don't know anyone [of the narrators]."
