I asked the Prophet, "What is the greatest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you." I said, "That is indeed a great sin." Then asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor."

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ: أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ۔» قُلْتُ: إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَعَظِيمٌ! قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَىُّ؟ قَالَ: «وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ تَخَافُ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ۔» قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَىُّ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ۔»

I or somebody, asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ "Which is the biggest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival (in worship) to Allah though He Alone created you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "Then, that you kill your son, being afraid that he may share your meals with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "That you commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." Then the following Verse was revealed to confirm the statement of Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Those who invoke not with Allah, any other god, nor kill life as Allah has forbidden except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse." (25.68)

سَأَلْتُ أَوْ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ قَالَ وَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ تَصْدِيقًا لِقَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ {وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلاَ يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ}

I said 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Which sin is the greatest?" He said, "To set up a rival unto Allah, though He Alone created you." I said, "What next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you." I further asked, "What next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." And then Allah revealed as proof of the statement of the Prophet: 'Those who invoke not with Allah any other god)................. (to end of verse)...' (25.68)

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَىُّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَ قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ {وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ}

I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Which is the biggest sin?" He said, "To set up rivals to Allah by worshipping others though He alone has created you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your child lest it should share your food." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ قَالَ يَحْيَى وَحَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنِي وَاصِلٌ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مِثْلَهُ قَالَ عَمْرٌو فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَكَانَ حَدَّثَنَا عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ وَمَنْصُورٍ وَوَاصِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَيْسَرَةَ قَالَ دَعْهُ دَعْهُ

A man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Which sin is the greatest in Allah's Sight?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "To set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you . " The man said, "What is next?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you." The man said, "What is next?" The Prophet said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." So Allah revealed in confirmation of this narration:-- 'And those who invoke not with Allah, any other god. Nor kill, such life as Allah has forbidden except for just cause nor commit illegal sexual intercourse. And whoever does this shall receive the punishment.' (25.68)

I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ "What is the biggest sin in the sight of Allah?" He said, "To set up rivals unto Allah though He alone created you." I said, "In fact, that is a tremendous sin," and added, "What next?" He said, "To kill your son being afraid that he may share your food with you." I further asked, "What next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor."

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَعَظِيمٌ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ تَخَافُ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you.'' The man said, "What is next?" The Prophet said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." Then Allah revealed in confirmation of that: "And those who invoke not with Allah any other god, nor kill such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment..... (25.68)

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَهَا {وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلاَ يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلاَ يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ} الآيَةَ

I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Which sin is the gravest in the eye of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you associate a partner with Allah (despite the fact) that He has created you. He (the reporter) said: I told him (the, Holy Prophet): Verily it is indeed grave. He (the reporter) said: I asked him what the next (gravest sin) was. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you kill your child out of fear that he shall join you in food. He (the reporter) said: I asked (him) what the next (gravest sin) was. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Then (the next gravest sin) is that you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.

Messenger of Allah, which offence is the most grievous in the eye of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you associate a partner with Allah (despite the fact) that He created you. He (the man) said: What next? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you kill your child out of fear that he would join you in food. He (the inquirer) said (again): What next? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour. And the Almighty and Exalted Lord testified it (with this verse): All those who call not unto another god along with Allah, and slay not any soul which Allah has forbidden, except in the cause of justice, nor commit fornication, and he who does this shall meet a requital of sin (xxv. 68).

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ تَصْدِيقَهَا { وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلاَ يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلاَ يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا}

‘Abd Allaah (bin Masud) said “I asked Apostle of Allaah ﷺ which sin is the gravest?” He replied “That you associate someone with Allaah, while He has created you”. I again asked “Which then?” He replied “That you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbor.” Allaah then revealed the following Qur’anic verse in support of the statement of the Prophet ﷺ “Those who invoke not with Allaah any other god nor slay such life as Allaah has made sacred except for just cause nor commit fornication.”

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ قَالَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى تَصْدِيقَ قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ { وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلاَ يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلاَ يَزْنُونَ } الآيَةَ

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is the worst sin?' He said: 'That you make and equal to Allah, while it is He who created you.'" He said: "I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'That you kill your child fearing that he will eat with you.'" He said: "I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'That you commit adultery with your neighbors wife.'"

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ أَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ بُنْدَارٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ وَالأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِمِثْلِهِ

"I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which sin is the worst.' He said: 'That you make an equal to Allah while it is He who created you, that you kill your child so that he not eat with you - or because of your food, that you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife.'" He said: "And he recited this Ayah: 'And those who invoke not any other god along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for what is required, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse - and whoever does that shall receive punishment. The torment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace (25:68 & 69).'"

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ أَوْ مِنْ طَعَامِكَ وَأَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ قَالَ وَتَلاَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ (والَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلاَ يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلاَ يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا * يُضَاعَفْ لَهُ الْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِ مُهَانًا )

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is the most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that has created you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child for fear that he may eat with you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife.'"

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that created you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child so that he will not eat with you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife.'"

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ

"I asked the Messenger of Allah [SAW], which sin is most grievous?" He said: "Shirk, setting up a rival to Allah, committing adultery with your neighbor's wife, and killing your child for fear of poverty, and that he may eat with you." Then 'Abdullah recited the Verse: "And those who invoke not any other Ilah (god) along with Allah."

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ قَالَ الشِّرْكُ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَأَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ الْفَقْرِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ { وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ } قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا خَطَأٌ وَالصَّوَابُ الَّذِي قَبْلَهُ وَحَدِيثُ يَزِيدَ هَذَا خَطَأٌ إِنَّمَا هُوَ وَاصِلٌ وَاللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ

‘Abd Allaah (bin Masud) said “I asked Apostle of Allaah ﷺ which sin is the gravest?” He replied “That you associate someone with Allaah, while He has created you”. سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَأَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان 68]

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Which sin is the greatest?" The Prophet replied, "To associate partners with Allah while He has created you." The man asked again, "Then what?" The Prophet said, "To kill your child out of fear that he will share your food with you." The man asked once more, "Then what?" The Prophet replied, "To commit adultery with your neighbor's wife." At that moment, Allah revealed in His book the confirmation of what the Prophet had said, "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit adultery. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty" (Quran 25:68).

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ فِي كِتَابِهِ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ} [الفرقان 68] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان 68]

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is the most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that has created you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child for fear that he may eat with you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4013)

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ عِنْدَ اللهِ ﷻ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ ﷻ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مِنْ طَعَامِكَ وَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ مَرَّةً أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّقُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which sin is greatest?" He said, "To set up partners with Allah, while He alone created you." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, then what?" He said, "Then to commit adultery with the wife of your neighbor."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْإِثْمِ أَعْظَمُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ

[AI] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Which sin is the greatest?" He replied, "To associate partners with Allah, while He has created you, to commit adultery with your neighbor's wife, and to kill your child for fear that he may eat with you or eat your food."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "Which sin is the greatest in the sight of Allah?" He replied, "To associate partners with Allah, while He created you." He was asked, "Then what?" He said, "To commit adultery with your neighbor's wife." Then Allah revealed the confirmation of this statement: "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty."

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ» قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «أَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ» فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَهَا {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا}

I asked the Prophet, "What is the greatest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you." I said, "That is indeed a great sin." Then asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4477)

‘Abd Allaah (bin Masud) said “I asked Apostle of Allaah ﷺ which sin is the gravest?” He replied “That you associate someone with Allaah, while He has created you”. I again asked “Which then?” He replied “That you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbor.” Allaah then revealed the following Qur’anic verse in support of the statement of the Prophet ﷺ “Those who invoke not with Allaah any other god nor slay such life as Allaah has made sacred except for just cause nor commit fornication.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2310)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سُئِلَ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ ؟ قَالَ أَنَ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ ؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ طَعَامَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ ؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ { وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ } وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رَوَاهُ غَيْرُ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ

قَالَ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ طَعَامَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ { وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي } الْآيَةَ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ رَوَاهُ غَيْرُ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which sin is the most grievous?' He said: 'Setting up a rival to Allah while it is He that has created you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Killing your child for fear that he may eat with you.' I said: 'Then what?' He said: 'Committing adultery with your neighbor's wife.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4013)

"I asked the Messenger of Allah [SAW], which sin is most grievous?" He said: "Shirk, setting up a rival to Allah, committing adultery with your neighbor's wife, and killing your child for fear of poverty, and that he may eat with you." Then 'Abdullah recited the Verse: "And those who invoke not any other Ilah (god) along with Allah." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4015)

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ؟ قَالَ «الشِّرْكُ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًا وَأَنْ تُزَانِي حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ الْفَقْرِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعْكَ» ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَبْدُ اللهِ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِى حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ} قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا خَطَأٌ لَا نَعْلَمُ أَنَّ أَحَدًا تَابَعَ يَزِيدَ عَلَيْهِ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ؟ قَالَ «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ»

[AI] I heard Ibn Mas'ood say, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ, which sin is the greatest?" He replied, "To associate partners with Allah while He alone created you." I asked further, "Then what?" He said, "To kill your own child out of fear that they would eat with you."

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قُلْتُ أِيُّ الْكَبَائِرِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُقْتَلَ وَلَدِكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which is the greatest sin?" He said, "That you set up a partner with Allah while He created you." I said, "Then what?" He said, "That you kill your child out of fear that he will eat with you." I said, "Then what?" He said, "That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife." In another narration by Al-Dhuhli, it is mentioned that you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife. The Hadith is Mursal (broken chain) from Mansur and Al-A'mash, and the Hadith is connected from Wasil from Abu Wael from Abdullah, and there is no mention of 'Amr ibn Shurahbil.

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أِيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الذُّهْلِيِّ أَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ حَدِيثُ مَنْصُورٍ وَالْأَعْمَشِ مَوْصُولٌ وَحَدِيثُ وَاصِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ لَيْسَ فِيهِ ذِكْرُ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ

"أَنْ تَجْعَلَ للَّه نِدًا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَىّ؟ قال: أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَطعَمَ مَعَكَ" .
