‘Wailing is one of the affairs of the Days of Ignorance, and if the woman who wails dies without having repented, Allah will cut a garment of pitch (tar) for her and a shirt of flaming fire.’”  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ النِّيَاحَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَإِنَّ النَّائِحَةَ إِذَا مَاتَتْ وَلَمْ تَتُبْ قَطَعَ اللَّهُ لَهَا ثِيَابًا مِنْ قَطِرَانٍ وَدِرْعًا مِنْ لَهَبِ النَّارِ  

[Machine] Abu Malik, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, in my Ummah there are four practices of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) that they do not abandon: pride in lineage, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing over the dead. And if the one who wails does not repent before they die, they will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment wearing garments made of tar, and then a shield of flames will be placed upon them."  

أَبُو مَالِكٍ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ فِي أُمَّتِي أَرْبَعًا مِنَ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَيْسُوا بِتَارِكِيهِنَّ الْفَخْرُ بِالْأَحْسَابِ وَالِاسْتِسْقَاءُبِالنُّجُومِ وَالنِّيَاحَةُ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ فَإِنَّ النَّائِحَةَ إِنْ لَمْ تَتُبْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَإِنَّهَا تَقُومُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَيْهَا سَرَابِيلُ مِنْ قَطِرَانٍ ثُمَّ يُعَلُّ عَلَيْهَا دِرْعٌ مِنْ لَهَبِ النَّارِ  

[Machine] Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, in my Ummah (community) there are four aspects of the pre-Islamic era (Ignorance) that they will not abandon: boasting in lineage, ridiculing one's ancestry, seeking rain by the stars, and wailing over the deceased. Indeed, if the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment wearing garments of molten tar, and boiling will be poured on them from the flames of Hell."  

أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ فِي أُمَّتِي أَرْبَعًا مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَيْسُوا بِتَارِكِيهِنَّ الْفَخْرُ فِي الْأَحْسَابِ وَالطَّعْنُ فِي الْأَنْسَابِ وَالِاسْتِسْقَاءُ بِالنُّجُومِ وَالنِّيَاحَةُ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ فَإِنَّ النَّائِحَةَ إِذَا لَمْ تَتُبْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقُومَ فَإِنَّهَا تَقُومُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَيْهَا سَرَابِيلُ مِنْ قَطِرَانٍ ثُمَّ يَغْلِي عَلَيْهِنَّ دُرُوعٌ مِنْ لَهَبِ النَّارِ  

Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and walling. And he (further) said: If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. "أربعٌ بقينَ في أمتى من أمر الجاهليةِ ليسوا بتاريكها، الفخر بالأحسابِ، والطعنُ في الأنسابِ، والاستسقاء بالنجوم، والنياحةُ على الميت، وإن النَّائحةَ إذا لم تَتُبْ قَبْلَ الموت جاءتْ يَوْمَ القيامةِ عليها سِربالٌ من قطران وَدِرعٌ من لهب من نار جهنَّم".  

"النِّيَاحَةُ (عَلَى الْميِّتِ) مِنَ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَإنَّ النَّائِحَة إِذَا لَمْ تَتُبْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَإِنَّها تُبْعثُ يَوْمَ الْقيَامَة عَلَيهَا سَرَابيلُ مِنْ قَطِرانٍ ثُمَّ يُغَلُّ عَلَيهَا بدُرُوعٍ مِنْ لَهَبِ النَّارِ".
