21. Book of Expeditions (4/9)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Guarding a frontier for a day or night is better than fasting a whole month and offering its night prayers."
That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The deeds of everyone who dies are sealed. Except for the one who dies guarding the frontier from the enemy, in the cause of Allah. For indeed his actions are increased for him until the Day of Judgement, and he is secure from the tribulation of the grave." And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The Mujahid is one who strives against his own soul." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1621)
[Machine] The translation of the Arabic phrase is: "He heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'Whoever dies while defending in the cause of Allah, believes in the punishment of the grave, and his rewards will continue until the Day of Resurrection.'"
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Keeping watch for a day and a night is better (in point of reward) than fasting for a whole month and standing in prayer every night. If a person dies (while, performing this duty), his (meritorious) activity will continue and he will go on receiving his reward for it perpetually and will be saved from the torture of the grave. (Using translation from Muslim 1913a)
[Machine] They said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about a deed that is equivalent to jihad in the cause of Allah." He replied, "You are unable to do it." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us so that we may be able to do it." He said, "The likeness of a mujahid in the cause of Allah is like that of a fasting person who stands in prayer and recites the verses of Allah, not taking a break from fasting or giving charity until the mujahid returns to his family."
was narrated that ‘Umar bin al-Khattab ؓ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever shades the head of a warrior, Allah will shade him on the Day of Resurrection; whoever equips a warrior until he is fully equipped, will have a reward like his; whoever builds a mosque in which the Name of Allah is mentioned. Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 376)
Abu Sa’id Al Khudri said “The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ sent an expedition towards Banu Lihyan and said “One of the two persons should go forth. He then said to those who sat (at home), If any one of you looks after the family and property of a warrior, he will receive half the reward of the one who goes forth (in jihad).” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2510)
“Whoever equips a warrior in the cause of Allah, he will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the warrior’s reward in the slightest.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2759)
Zaid bin Khalid al Juhani reported that Apostle of Allaah ﷺ as saying “He who equips a fighter in Allaah’s path has taken part in the fighting. And he looks after a fighter’s family when he is away has taken part in the fighting.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2509)
[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever equips a warrior will have the reward equal to that of the warrior, and whoever supports a warrior's family will have the reward equal to that of the warrior." Ibn Shihab then informed me that Busr ibn Sa'id told him.
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, "Whoever prepares a warrior for the sake of Allah or supports his family in his absence, he will be rewarded equally, without any decrease in his reward. And whoever provides food to break the fast for a fasting person, he will be rewarded equally, without any decrease in his reward."
"The sanctity of the wives of the Mujahidin to those who stay behind is like the sanctity of their mothers. There is no man among those who stay behind who takes on the responsibility of looking after the wife of one of the Mujahidin (and betrays him) but he (the betrayer) will be made to stand before him on the Day Resurrection and it will be said: 'O So-and-so, this is so-and-so, take whatever you want from his good deeds.'" Then the Prophet ﷺ turned to his Companions and said: "What do you think: Will he leave him any of his good deeds?" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3191)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The honor and sanctity of the women of the Mujahideen is like that of their mothers. And whoever remains behind and does wrong to his family after the departure of a Mujahid, he will have to answer for it on the Day of Judgment. It will be said to him, 'This is your responsibility in your family for the harm you caused, so take from his good deeds.'"
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "A man fights for pride and haughtiness another fights for bravery, and another fights for showing off; which of these (cases) is in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The one who fights that Allah's Word (Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause." (See Hadith No. 65, Vol. 4) (Using translation from Bukhārī 7458)
A man said: Messenger of Allah, a man wishes to take part in jihad in Allah's path desiring some worldly advantage? The Prophet ﷺ said: He will have not reward. The people thought it terrible, and they said to the man: Go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for you might not have made him understand well. He, therefore, (went and again) asked: Messenger of Allah, a man wishes to take part in jihad in Allah's path desiring some worldly advantage? He replied: There is no reward for him. They again said to the man: Return to the Messenger of Allah. He, therefore, said to him third time. He replied: There is no reward for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2516)
"Whoever fights seeking only an 'Iqbal, then he will have what he intended." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3139)
[Machine] "A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, which type of jihad is the best?' He replied, 'Striving with your wealth and sacrificing your life.'"
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying with us, and when he ended his prayer, he requested, "O Allah, grant me the best of what You grant to Your righteous servants." When the Prophet ﷺ finished praying, he asked, "Who was the one who requested earlier?" The man replied, "It was me, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "When your horse is injured and you are martyred in the cause of Allah."
21.5 [Machine] The virtue of spending in the cause of Allah
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever spends two (units of currency) in the cause of Allah from his wealth, the curtains of Paradise will call him saying, 'Come closer, this is better and more frequent.'". Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this the one who is not left with anything?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I hope that all of the curtains will call upon you."
[Machine] The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Judgment?" He replied, "Do you struggle to see the moon on a clear night without clouds?" They answered, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do you struggle to see the sun at noon when it is not covered by clouds?" They replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not struggle to see your Lord on the Day of Judgment, just as you do not struggle to see these celestial bodies. A believer will be presented before his Lord and will say, 'O Lord, did You not honor me? Did You not color me? Did You not marry me? Did You not give me dominion over horses and camels?' He will respond, 'Certainly, my servant.' The believer will think that they will be rewarded, but Allah will say, 'Today I will forget you as you have forgotten Me.' Then another person will be presented and will say the same, to which Allah will respond in the same manner. Then a third person will be presented and will ask, 'Who are you?' The person will reply, 'I am Your servant, I believed in You, Your Prophet, and Your Book. I fasted, I prayed, and I gave in charity. I praised Your goodness to the best of my ability.' Then it will be asked, 'Should We not call witnesses to testify for you?' The person will reflect and wonder who among creation will bear witness for him. Eventually, he will be silenced and his thigh, flesh, and bones will speak about his actions. This will be the hypocrite, who will seek excuses for himself, and Allah will be angry with him." Then the caller will call out, "Do not follow the worship of each nation, they worshiped their leaders." The followers of the devils will follow the devils, and the Jews and Christians will follow their leaders to Hellfire. Then it will be said, "Only the believers are left." They will come to Allah, and He will say, "What are these people standing for?" They will respond, "We are the believing servants of Allah. We worshipped Him, and He is our Lord. He gave us what He promised us and granted us rewards." Then Allah will say, "I am your Lord, so proceed." A bridge will be placed, and on it are hooks of fire that will snatch away people. At that moment, intercession will begin. O Allah, send blessings and peace. O Allah, send blessings and peace. Once a person crosses the bridge, every individual who spent in the way of Allah, regardless of the amount, will be called by the treasures of Paradise. They will say, "O servant of Allah, O Muslim, this is better." Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, that person does not have to beg for entry through one gate and enter through another." The Prophet ﷺ struck my shoulders and said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be among them." 'Abd al-Jabbbar dictated this to me, and Sufyan ibn Waki' dictated it to him.

[Machine] I arrived at the camp and met Abu Dhar. I said, "O Abu Dhar, what is your wealth?" He said, "My wealth is my actions." I said, "O Abu Dhar, won't you tell me a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No Muslim couple has three children who do not reach the age of puberty, but Allah will admit them to Paradise by His mercy.'" And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No man spends on his two wives in the cause of Allah, but the two gates of Paradise will be opened for him.'" I asked, "And what are the two wives from his wealth?" He said, "Two servants from his slaves, two horsemen from his horses, and two camels from his camels."

[Machine] Narrated to us about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a narration that I heard from him saying, "Whoever spends two pairs in the way of Allah will be rewarded with the treasures of Paradise." [Machine] I met Abu Dhar wearing a cloak, and he had attached a pouch to it. He poured water into it, then he released it so that his camel could drink from it and give water to its companions. This is a characteristic of the Arabs' noble conduct. So I said, "O Abu Dhar, what is your situation?" He replied, "I have my own wealth." I asked, "O Abu Dhar, what have you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever spends on two, his two sides will obstruct him from entering Paradise.'" I asked, "O Abu Dhar, what are these two sides?" He said, "If they are men, then it is two men, and if they are horses, then it is two horses, and if they are camels, then it is two camels." He counted all categories of wealth until he had mentioned all types. I said, "Yes, O Abu Dhar." He said, "I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'No two Muslims die, having three children, except that Allah admits them to Paradise through His mercy.'"

[Machine] When the verse was revealed: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing." The Messenger of Allah said, "O Lord, increase the wealth of my Ummah." Then the verse was revealed: "Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?" The Messenger of Allah said, "O Lord, increase the wealth of my Ummah." Then the verse was revealed: "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."

Allah the Exalted and Great revealed (a verse) regarding those who were killed at Bi'r Ma'una, and we recited it, till it was abrogated later on (and the verse was like this):, convey to it our people the tidings that we have met our Lord, and He was pleased with us and we were pleased with Him". (Using translation from Muslim 677a)

One who is wounded in the way of Allah-and Allah knows better who is wounded in His way-will appear on the Day of Judgment with his wound bleediing. The colour (of its discharge) will be the colour of blood, (but) its smell will be the smell of musk. (Using translation from Muslim 1876d)

"A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the cause of Allah with patience and seeking reward, facing the enemy and not running away, do you think that Allah will forgive my sins?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Yes.' When the man turned away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him back and said: 'What did you say?' He repeated his question, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Yes, except debt. Jibril told me.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3156)

[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic text is as follows:
"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Fajr prayer, he would turn toward us with his face and say, 'Did anyone among you see a dream last night?' So, one day we asked him (about the dreams), and he said, 'I saw two men coming to me and holding my hand, then they took me and ascended with me in a tree. They entered a house with me, which I had never seen anything better than. Then he said, 'This house is the house of martyrs'."

[Machine] "We entered upon Umm ad-Darda while we were young orphans, so she wiped our heads and said, 'Rejoice, O my sons, for I hope that you will be among the intercession of your father. For I heard Abu Darda say I heard the Messenger of Allahﷺ say, 'A martyr will intercede for seventy members of his household.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one enters Paradise and is pleased to return to the world except the martyr, for he loves to return to be killed once again."

Nobody who enters Paradise will (ever like to) return to this world even if he were offered everything on the surface of the earth (as an inducement) except the martyr who will desire to return to this world and be killed ten times for the sake of the great honour that has been bestowed upon him. (Using translation from Muslim 1877b)

[Machine] He heard Utbah ibn Abdus-Sulami, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , narrating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The slain ones (in battle) are of three types: a believer who fought in the cause of Allah with his life and wealth until he met the enemy and was killed, so he is a martyr who will be tested and rewarded under the Throne of Allah. The prophets do not surpass him in status except by the degree of prophethood. And a believer who feels disgusted with himself due to sins and transgressions and fought in the cause of Allah with his life and wealth until he met the enemy and was killed, so his sins and transgressions are eradicated. Verily, the sword wipes away transgressions. He will enter Paradise from any of its eight gates that he wishes, while Hellfire has seven gates, and some of them are better than others. And a hypocrite who fought in the cause of Allah with his life and wealth until he met the enemy and was killed, so he will be in the Fire. Verily, the sword does not erase hypocrisy."

[Machine] Harithah, the son of my aunt, set off with an armor on the day of Badr when he left for battle. He was struck by an arrow and killed. Then my aunt, his mother, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if my son Harithah is in Paradise, I will be patient and content. Otherwise, you will see what I will do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O mother of Harithah, there are many gardens in Paradise, and Harithah is in the highest level of Paradise, Al-Firdaus."

"Horses may bring reward to a man, or they may be a means of protection, or they may be a burden (of sin). As for that which brings reward, it is a man who keeps it for the cause of Allah and ties it with a long rope in a pasture or a garden; whatever it eats or drinks in that pasture or garden will count as good deeds for him. If it breaks its rope and jumps over one or two hills, its footsteps" -and according to the Hadith of Al-Harith, "its dung will count as good deeds for him. If it passes by a river and drinks from it, even though (its owner) did not intend to give it water from that river, that will also bring him reward. If a man keeps a horse in order to earn an independent living and avoid asking others for help, and he does not forget his duty toward Allah with regard to their (the horses') necks and backs, then they will be a means of protection for him. If a man keeps horses out of pride, to show off before others and to fight the Muslims, then that will be a burden (of sin) for him." The Prophet was asked about donkeys and he said: "Nothing has been revealed to me concerning them except this Verse which is comprehensive in meaning: 'So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) shall see it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3563)
