12. Book of Fasting (3/6)
If one amongst us had to break fasts (of Ramadan due to natural reasons, i. e. menses) during the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ she could not find it possible to complete them so long she had been in the presence of Messenger of Allah ﷺ till Sha'ban commenced. (Using translation from Muslim 1146e)
[Machine] "I and Hafsah became voluntary fasters, so food was presented to us and we broke our fast. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Observe the fast again on another day in place of this one.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever vomits involuntarily while fasting, there is no need for them to make up for the fast. But whoever deliberately induces vomiting, they must make up for the fast."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever breaks their fast in the month of Ramadan forgetfully, there is no make-up (obligatory fasting) or expiation (atonement) upon them."
[Machine] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was fasting and ate and drank by mistake." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has fed you and given you drink. Complete your fast."
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "If a fasting person eats or drinks forgetfully, then let him complete his fast, for indeed Allah has provided him with food and drink."
"Whoever eats out of forgetfulness while fasting, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah Who has fed him and given him to drink." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1673)
12.9 [Machine] The Expiation
[Machine] A man fasted in Ramadan, so the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to atone by freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people. He said, "I cannot find a way to do any of these." So the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot find anyone poorer than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible, then he said, "Eat it all."
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth". (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2390)
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that he had committed adultery with his wife during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah asked him, "Can you find a slave to free?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him dates and instructed him to give them in charity. The man then mentioned his need to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he instructed him to take the dates for himself.
[Machine] "A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been ruined!' He asked, 'What happened?' The man said, 'I accidentally slept with my wife during a day in the month of Ramadan.' The Prophet said, 'Free a slave.' The man replied, 'I cannot afford it.' The Prophet said, 'Then fast for two consecutive months.' The man said, 'I am unable to do that.' The Prophet said, 'Then feed sixty poor people.' The man said, 'I cannot find that many.' The Prophet then brought a basket filled with fifteen saa' worth of dates and said, 'Then give this in charity.' The man replied, 'I swear, the poorest person in my family is more in need of it than my family.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled until his teeth were visible and said, 'Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah, and feed your family with it.'"
[Machine] A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have lost everything!" He asked: "And what is that?" The man said: "It fell upon my wife on a day in the month of Ramadan." He said: "Free a slave." The man said: "I do not have one." The Prophet said: "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said: "I am not capable of doing so." He said: "Then feed sixty poor people." The man said: "I cannot find them." So, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said: "Take this and give it in charity." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is on someone other than my family." The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his teeth were visible, and then he said: "Take it and seek forgiveness from your Lord."
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that he had accidentally burned his wife during Ramadan. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a container called "al-'araq" containing dates. He said, "Where is the person who got burned?" The man stood up and said, "I will give charity with this."
While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1936)
“A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, my sister has died and she owed a fast of two consecutive months.’ He said: ‘Do you not think that if your sister owed a debt, you would pay it off for her?’ She said: ‘Of course.’ He said: ‘The right of Allah is greater.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1758)
12.10 [Machine] Cupping for the fasting person
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had himself cupped when he was fasting and wearing ihram (pilgrim garb). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2373)
[Machine] From Thawban, the servant of the Messenger of Allahﷺ he said that he went out with the Messenger of Allahﷺ for eighteen nights of Ramadan to Al-Baqi' (graveyard in Madinah). The Messenger of Allahﷺ looked at a man who was applying hijamah (cupping therapy), so the Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "The one who performs hijamah and the one who gets it done both break their fast."

[Machine] "While I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ in the eighteenth night of Ramadan, an interruption came and he saw a man shaving his head. He ﷺ said, 'The one who is shaving his head and the one who is getting his head shaved have broken their fasts.'"

[Machine] "I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Baqi' during the time of Fath (conquest of Makkah). He looked at a man who was shaving his head and said, 'The one who shaves his head and the one who gets his head shaved have both broken their fast.'"
‘The cupper and the one for whom cupping is done both break their fast.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1679)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ ordered Abu Taybah to come to him with the eclipse of the sun. He ordered him to put the stone weight with the iftar of the fasting person, so he measured it. Then he asked him, "How much is your tribute?" He said, "Two sa'." So the Prophet ﷺ put a sa' from him.
12.11 [Machine] The kiss of the fasting person.
