12. Book of Fasting (2/6)
“Eat Suhur, for in Suhur there is a blessing.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1692)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah and His angels bless those who are on the right flanks of the rows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 676)
"Bilal calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls (the Adhan)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 637)
"Bilal calls the Adhan at night to awaken those of you who are asleep, and so that those who are praying Qiyam cam return. Dawn is not when the light appears like this" - and he gestured with his hand - "rather dawn is when it appears like this: - and he gestured with his two forefingers. ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2170)
[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, Ibn Umm Maktum calls for the prayer at night, so eat and drink until Bilal calls for the prayer." And Bilal used to call for the prayer when he saw the dawn.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the son of Um Maktum calls the adhan, then eat and drink. But when Bilal calls the adhan, do not eat or drink. If any of us still has some remaining food from pre-dawn meal, then say to Bilal: Wait until I finish my pre-dawn meal."
The Prophet ﷺ as saying: How good is the believers meal of dates shortly before dawn. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2345)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have the pre-dawn meal, even if it is with a sip of water."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The difference between our fasting and that of the people of the Book is eating shortly before dawn. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2343)
The dawn is not like it, as one says (and he lifted his hand) till he (dispersed his fingers) and said: It is like this. (Using translation from Muslim 1093a)
[Machine] Narrated by Al-Qa'nabi from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Bilal calls the adhan at night, so continue to eat and drink until the adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum is called." Ibn Shihab said: Ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man who would not call the adhan until it was said to him: 'You have come to the morning, you have come to the morning.'
"Bilal calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls (the Adhan)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 637)
12.5 [Machine] Chapter of the Etiquettes of Fasting
"When this verse was revealed 'And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a miskin (poor person) (for every day). Those among us who did not want to fast would pay the fidyah, until the verse after it was revealed and abrogated this." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2316)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, fasting is not only about abstaining from food and drink. Rather, fasting is also about refraining from vain talk and indecent behavior. If someone insults you or behaves ignorantly towards you, then say, "I am fasting."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" (Using translation from Bukhārī 1903)
[Machine] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Many a person who stands in prayer gets nothing from his standing but sleeplessness, and many a person who fasts gets nothing from his fasting but hunger."
“When anyone of you is fasting, let him not utter evil or ignorant speech. If anyone speaks to him in an ignorant manner, let him say: ‘I am fasting.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1691)
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Do not insult others while you are fasting. And if someone insults you, say, 'I am fasting.' And if you are standing, then sit down."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "If one of you is insulted while fasting, he should respond by saying: 'I am fasting.' He should refrain from arguing with the person insulting him."
12.6 [Machine] The fast of sexual defilement
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If the call for Fajr prayer is made and one of you is in a state of junub (sexual impurity), then he should not fast that day."
[Machine] He heard Abu Huraira saying, "Whoever wakes up in a state of ritual impurity (junub), should not fast." Abu Bakr and his father went to Umm Salamah and Aisha and they both said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of ritual impurity (junub) and then fast." Abu Bakr and his father then went to Marwan and informed him. Marwan said, "I wanted to discuss this with both of you when you went to Abu Huraira and informed him." Abu Bakr and his father then went to Abu Huraira and informed him. He said, "They both know it better. Al-Fadl bin Abbas informed us about it."
"Aishah and Umm Salamah, the wives of the Prophet informed me that the Prophet would find that it was Fajr while he was Junub from (relations with) his wives, then he would perform Ghusl and fast." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 779)
[Machine] "It is forbidden for one who has become sexually impure to fast. What do you say regarding this?" She said, "Bilal used to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and give the call to prayer while he was in a state of impurity. He would then perform ablution and I would see water dripping from his shoulders, and yet he would continue fasting."
[Machine] Aisha and Umm Salamah, both wives of the Prophet ﷺ , said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would wake up in a state of janabah (ritual impurity) without having had any sexual dream during Ramadan, and then he would observe fasting."
[Machine] "If the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep in a state of junub (ritual impurity) and Bilal called him for the Fajr prayer, he would get up, perform ablution, and I would see the water dripping from his skin and hair. Then, I would hear his recitation during the Fajr prayer, and he would remain fasting." Mutarrif asked, "Was this during Ramadan?" He replied, "Yes, it was the same for him."
[Machine] "If the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep in a state of janaba (a state of impurity after sexual intercourse), Bilal would come to him and give the call to prayer, then he would get up and perform ablution. I saw water dripping from his hair, then he would fast for the day." Mutarrif said, "I asked Al-Sha'bi, is this in the month of Ramadan?" He said, "In the month of Ramadan and other months, it is the same."
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the morning comes upon me while I am in a state of janabah. Should I fast that day?" So, I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Sometimes the morning comes upon me while I am in a state of janabah, so I perform ghusl, pray Fajr, and fast that day." Then the man said, "Indeed, you are not like us. Allah has forgiven you for whatever sins you have committed in the past and whatever sins you will commit in the future." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "I hope that I am the most righteous among you and the one who has the most knowledge of what I fear from Allah."
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of sexual impurity (junub) and then proceeded to observe fasting."
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic phrase is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would wake up in a state of janabah (major impurity) from a wet dream, then he would observe fasting."
Messenger of Allah, (the time) of prayer overtakes me as I am in a state of junub; should I observe fast (in this state)? Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: (At times the time) of prayer overtakes me while I am in a state of junub, and I observe fast (in that very state), whereupon he said: Messenger of Allah, you are not like us Allah has pardoned all your sins, the previous ones and the later ones. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: By Allah, I hope I am the most God-fearirg of you, and possess the best knowledge among you of those (things) against which I should guard. (Using translation from Muslim 1110)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to experience dawn while he was in a state of sexual impurity from his spouse, then he would perform ghusl (ritual bath) and observe fasting."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wakes up in the morning in a state of impurity, he has no fast." So, I and my father went to Umm Salama and Aisha, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ , and asked them. They informed us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of impurity without any emission, and then he would observe fast. We then went to Marwan ibn Hakam and informed him of what they had said, as well as the saying of Abu Huraira. Marwan said, "I have determined to ask you not to go to Abu Huraira and inform him." We then met Abu Huraira, who was near the gate of the mosque, and said to him, "Indeed, the Amir has determined something regarding a matter that I will mention to you." Abu Huraira asked, "What is it?" My father narrated it to him, and Abu Huraira's face changed, then he said, "This is how al-Fadl ibn Abbas narrated it to me, and he is more knowledgeable."
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of sexual impurity, then he would observe fasting." Abu Hurairah responded with his youth.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the morning comes upon me while I am in a state of sexual impurity. Should I fast on that day?" I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Perhaps the morning came upon me while I was in a state of sexual impurity, so I performed ablution, took a bath, prayed the morning prayer, and observed fasting on that day." The man said, "Indeed, you are not like us. Allah has forgiven you for your past and future sins." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I hope to be among those who fear Allah the most and have the most knowledge of what I should avoid."
