12. Book of Fasting (4/6)
Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out from Medina to Mecca and he fasted till he reached 'Usfan, where he asked for water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke the fast, and did not fast after that till he reached Mecca, and that happened in Ramadan." Ibn ʿAbbas used to say, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during the journeys so whoever wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not to fast, could do so." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1948)
"I feel able to fast while traveling; is there any sin on me?" He said: "It is a concession from Allah, the mighty and sublime, so whoever accepts it has done well, and whoever wants to fast, there is no sin on him." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2303)
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "Indeed, Allah loves that His concessions are granted, just as He loves that His firm commands are fulfilled."
12.13 [Machine] Fasting from others
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever died and he ought to have fasted (the missed days of Ramadan) then his guardians must fast on his behalf." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1952)
“A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, my sister has died and she owed a fast of two consecutive months.’ He said: ‘Do you not think that if your sister owed a debt, you would pay it off for her?’ She said: ‘Of course.’ He said: ‘The right of Allah is greater.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1758)
12.14 [Machine] Prohibited Fasting
[Machine] To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Did I not inform you that you fast during the day and stand in prayer at night?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "So do not act otherwise. Sleep, stand, fast, and break your fast. For your body has rights upon you, and your eyes have rights upon you, and your wife has rights upon you. And I give you the choice to fast three days in every month, for indeed, every good deed is rewarded ten times its like. Thus, this will be fasting for the whole year." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I find strength." He said, "Fast three days from each month." I said, "I am capable of more." He said, "Fast the fasting of the Prophet David and do not exceed it." I said, "What was the fasting of the Prophet David?" He said, "Half of the year."
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A woman should not fast when her husband is present, except with his permission."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "A woman should not fast voluntarily for a day except with the permission of her husband."
12.15 [Machine] A chapter about the fasting of union.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not speak to me." They said, "But Prophet of Allah, you speak to us." He said, "I am not like any of you, for indeed my Lord feeds and quenches me."
The Prophet ﷺ said (to his companions), "Do not fast Al-Wisal." They said, "But you fast Al-Wisail." He said, "I am not like you, for at night my Lord feeds me and makes me drink." But the people did not give up Al-Wisal, so the Prophet ﷺ fasted Al-Wisal with them for two days or two nights, and then they saw the crescent whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "If the crescent had delayed, I would have continued fasting (because of you)," as if he wanted to vanquish them completely (because they had refused to give up Al Wisal). (Using translation from Bukhārī 7299)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of excessive socializing, beware of excessive socializing." They said, "But you engage in socializing, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "I am not like you in that matter. Indeed, my Lord keeps me fed and gives me to drink. So, perform deeds within your capability."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, it is narrated that he forbade excessive socialization. It was said to him, "But you maintain frequent communication with people." He replied, "You are not like me. I have a sustainer who feeds me and gives me drink. So, whoever amongst you continues to maintain constant communication, it is from one magic spell to another."
[Machine] Regarding the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "There is no intimacy while fasting."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not continue to fast." They said, "Indeed, you continue to fast." He said, "I am not like any of you. I am fed and given drink."
12.16 [Machine] A chapter on the perpetual fasting.
"It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, so and so never broke his fast, even for one day for the rest of his life.' He said: 'He has neither fasted nor broken his fast."" 'Ata said: "someone who heard him told me that Ibn 'Umar (said) that the Prophet said: 'Whoever fasts every day of his life, then he has not fasted." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2379)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ never fasted a complete month except for Ramadan, and he never fasted a complete month except for Ramadan. He never fasted more in any other month than he did in Sha'ban.
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever fasts every day of is life, then he has neither fasted, nor broken the fast." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2374)
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever fasts every day of is life, then he has neither fasted, nor broken the fast." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2374)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever fasts the entire lifetime, Hell will be narrowed for him in this manner." And he clasped his fingers together ninety times. Al-Fadl ibn al-Hubab informed us of this once again, saying, "And he clasped his fingers together ninety times."
12.17 [Machine] A chapter on fasting on the day of Ashura
[Machine] Ammar ibn Yasir said, "Whoever fasts on the day which is doubted (uncertain), has disobeyed Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ."
‘Do not anticipate Ramadan by fasting one or two days before, except for a man who has a habitual pattern of fasting, in which case let him fast.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1650)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said to him or to a man, 'Have you observed any voluntary fasts during this month?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then if you break your fast, observe a fast for one or two days.'"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked a man: Did you fast the last day of Sha'ban ? He replied: No. He said: If you did not observe a fast, you must fast for a day. One of the two narrators said: For two days. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2328)
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When it is the middle of ˹the month of˺ Shaʿbān then break ˹from˺ fasting until ˹the month of˺ Ramaḍān arrives.”
[Machine] I entered upon Ikrimah on the day when the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan was being doubtful and he was eating, so I said, "Order me to eat (also)?" He said, "I am not ordering you to do that, for the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Fast when you see the crescent of Ramadan, and when you see the crescent of Dhul-Hijja, break your fast. If the sky is overcast (and you cannot see it), then complete thirty days of Sha'ban.'"

‘Do not anticipate Ramadan by fasting one or two days before, except for a man who has a habitual pattern of fasting, in which case let him fast.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1650)
The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate. (Using translation from Muslim 1080e)

[Machine] Ammar ibn Yassir said, "Whoever fasts on the day they have doubts about, has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim ﷺ ."

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade fasting on these two days. 'Id-ul-Adha and 'Id-ul-Fitr. (Using translation from Muslim 1138)

I observed Id along with Umar b. al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him). He came (out in an open space) and prayed and (after) completing it addressed the people and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden the observing of fast on these two days. One is the day of Fitr (at the end of your fasts), and the second one, the day when you eat (the meat) of your sacrifices. (Using translation from Muslim 1137)

12.20 [Machine] A chapter on the fasting of the day of Arafah
"Ibn Umar was asked about fasting (the Day of) Arafah (at Arafat). He said: 'I performed Hajj with the Prophet, and he did not fast it, and with Abu Bakr, and he did not fast it, and with Umar, and he did not fast it, and with Uthman, and he did not fast it. I do no fast it, nor order it nor forbid it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 751)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ was brought pomegranate on the day of Arafat, and he ate it." He said, "Umm al-Fadl informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought milk on the day of Arafat, and he drank from it."
"While the people were with me on the day of ʿArafat they differed as to whether the Prophet ﷺ was fasting or not; some said that he was fasting while others said that he was not fasting. So, I sent to him a bowl full of milk while he was riding over his camel and he drank it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1988)
[Machine] About Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said, "People expressed doubt regarding the matter of the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Arafah. So Maymunah sent a drink to him while he was standing in the place of standing (meaning in Arafat), and people were watching."

I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2439)

12.21 [Machine] A chapter on fasting on Fridays
[Machine] I heard Abu Hurairah say, "I did not forbid fasting on the day of Friday, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Lord of Kaaba also did not forbid it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not single out the night of Friday with special prayers from among the nights, and do not single out the day of Friday with fasting from among the days."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not specifically observe fasting on the day of Friday among the days, and do not specifically observe standing in prayer on the night of Friday among the nights."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: None of you must fast on Friday unless he fasts the day before or the day after. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2420)
[Machine] I was sitting with Abu Huraira when a man came to him and said, "Indeed, you have prohibited fasting on the day of Friday for the people." Abu Huraira replied, "I did not prohibit the people from fasting on the day of Friday. However, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Do not fast on the day of Friday unless you combine it with preceding or succeeding days.'"
That the Prophet ﷺ entered upon her on Friday while she was fasting. He asked: Did you fast yesterday ? She said: No. He again asked: Do you intend to fast tomorrow ? She said: No. He said: So break your fast. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2422)
12.22 [Machine] A chapter on fasting on Saturday.
[Machine] I heard Abdullah ibn Busr al-Mazini, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying, "Do you see this hand of mine? I pledged allegiance with it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And I heard him saying, 'Do not fast on Saturdays unless it is an obligatory fast upon you, even if one of you cannot find anything except the bark of a tree, let him break his fast on it.'"
