10. Book of Funerals (6/7)
The earth would consume all of the son of Adam except his tailbone. From it he was created, and from it he will be recreated (on the Day of Resurrection). (Using translation from Muslim 2955b)
There is a bone in the human being which the earth would never consume and it is from this that new bodies would be reconstituted (on the Day of Resurrection). They said: Messenger of Allah, which bone is that? Thereupon he said: It is the spinal bone. (Using translation from Muslim 2955c)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Everything in a person's body will be consumed by the earth except for the coccyx bone. It will remain, and from it, the person will be reconstituted."
10.15 [Machine] A lesson on mourning and its likeness.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three practices of ignorance that the people of Islam will not abandon: wailing, seeking rain through divination, and superstitions."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "There are four characteristics of ignorance that people will not abandon: wailing, cursing each other's lineages, boasting about ancestors, and seeking omens. We have been commanded with 'An-Naw' (a form of divination), and contagious diseases spread like an infected camel in a herd. So who is more unjust than the first one?"
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and walling. And he (further) said: If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. (Using translation from Muslim 934)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ made a pledge to the women that they should not commit adultery. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, surely there were women who made us happy during the era of ignorance, so can we make them happy in Islam?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "There is no making women happy in Islam, nor envy, nor harming, nor backbiting, nor slandering. And whoever commits theft is not one of us."
“He is not one of us who tears his garments, strikes his cheeks, and cries with the cry of the Days of Ignorance.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1584)
[Machine] Abu Musa felt sick and fainted. His head was in the lap of a woman from his family. A woman shouted, but he couldn't respond to her. When he woke up, he said, "I am innocent of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is innocent of. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is innocent of being cauterized, being cupped, and being cut with a blade."
[Machine] I saw my father sees a man consoling himself with the consolation of ignorance, so he rebuked him but he did not respond. Then he said, "I see within yourself or in yourself, I am not able when I hear it to not say it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever consoles himself with the consolation of ignorance, then rebuke him and do not submit to him.'"
[Machine] Oh Umm Abdullah, should I not inform you about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed? She replied, "Yes, please do." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed those who shave their heads, create slits, or pluck their eyebrows."
[Machine] She heard Aisha saying: "When the news of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Zaid ibn Haritha and Abdullah ibn Rawahah's death reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , sorrow was evident on his face. Aisha said, while I peeked through the door, a man came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the women of Ja'far have cried excessively'. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to go and tell them to stop crying. Aisha said, the man left and then came back saying, 'I commanded them to stop crying, but they did not obey me until it was the third time.' They claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Put dust in their mouths.' Aisha said, I said, 'May Allah disfigure you! You are not doing what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do.'"
It was narrated from Abu Umamah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the woman who scratches her face and rends her garment and cries that she is doomed (i.e. because of the death of this person). (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1585)
[Machine] Salama bin al-Azraq testified that I heard Abu Huraira saying that we passed by the funeral of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I was with him, as well as Umar ibn al-Khattab and some women crying. He reproached and admonished them, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, O Umar, for the eye sheds tears, the soul grieves, and the covenant is near."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me, so I went to him with the daughter of Zainab, and she was trembling as if she were in a seizure. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "To Allah belongs what He takes and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything has a fixed term." Sa'd bin 'Ubada then said, "O Messenger of Allah, are you weeping or do you not forbid crying?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, it is a sign of mercy that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants. Verily, Allah only has mercy on His servants who are merciful."
[Machine] Saad complained, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him accompanied by Abdurrahman ibn Awf, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah ibn Masood. When they entered, they found him unconscious. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, he has passed away!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then wept, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept, they also wept. He said, "Do you not hear? Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, does not punish with the tears of the eyes or the sorrow of the heart, but He punishes with this," and he pointed to his tongue.
[Machine] When the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Usama bin Zaid started crying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is not from us, the one whose heart is filled with sadness and eyes are streaming with tears, and he does not say anything that angers the Lord."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three acts that are considered disbelief in Allah: lamenting loudly, ripping pockets, and insulting lineage."

[Machine] "When Abu Salama died, Umm Salama said, 'I am a stranger in a land of strangeness, I will cry in a way that people will talk about.' And I had prepared myself to cry when a woman from the Mus'ad tribe came to console me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met her and said, 'Do you want to let the Shaitan enter another house from which he has been expelled?' Hearing this, I stopped crying and did not cry anymore."

[Machine] "When the verse 'When the believing women come to you, taking the oath of allegiance to you' was revealed, until His statement 'and not disobey you in what is right and fair,' I cried, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, except for the family of Fulan, for they have been the ones who made me happy in the time of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to make them happy.' Then a man came to him and said, "These are the women of Mayer's, crying over him, and they have increased their weeping." He ordered him to stop them, so he stayed there for a while and then returned and mentioned that he ordered them to stop. They refused to obey him, so he ordered him for the second time to stop them.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I prohibited you from three things - visiting graves, keeping the meat of sacrifices for more than three days, and using containers except for drinking purposes. However, visiting the grave of my mother was permitted for me. I only prohibited you from keeping the meat of sacrifices for more than three days to facilitate the act for those who did not offer sacrifices. And I prohibited you from using containers except for drinking purposes, as no container is lawful or prohibited."
“The Prophet ﷺ visited the grave of his mother and wept, causing the people around him to weep. Then he said: ‘I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not give me permission. Then I asked my Lord for permission to visit her grave and He gave me permission. So visit the graves, for they will remind you of death.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1572)

Allahummaghfir li ahli baqi'il gharaqad. (Peace be upon you, O abode of believing people. You and we used to remind one another about the Day of Resurrection and we are relying on one another (with regard to intercession and bearing witness). Soon we will join you, if Allah willing. O Allah, forgive the people of Baqi' Al-Charqad.)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2039)

"The Prophet came to 'Abdullah bin Ubayy after he had been placed in his grave, and commanded that he be brought out. He placed him on his knees and blew on him and clothed him in his shirt. And Allah knows best." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2019)
"When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet and said: 'Give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and (some and) offer the (funeral) prayer for him, and pray for forgiveness for him'. So he gave him his shirt then he said: 'When you have finished, inform me and I will offer the (funeral) prayer for him.' But 'Umar stopped him and said: 'Hasn't Allah forbidden you to offer the (funeral) prayer for the hypocrites?' He said: 'I have two options. Whether you ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask no forgiveness for them." So he offered the (funeral) prayer for him. Then Allah, Most High, revealed: 'And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave.' So he stopped offering the (funeral) prayer for them." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1900)
[Machine] "I heard Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: When Abdullah ibn Ubay died, his son Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Ubay ibn Salul came to the Messenger of Allahﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, this is Abdullah ibn Ubay, we have buried him, so please pray for him. The Messenger of Allahﷺ stood up to pray for him. When he stood up to pray, I stood in front of the chest of the Messenger of Allahﷺ and I said: O Prophet of Allah, are you praying for the enemy of Allah who said such and such on such and such day, and the one who said such and such on such and such day, I number his evil days. The Messenger of Allahﷺ smiled and said: Leave me, O Umar. When I persisted, he said: Leave me, O Umar. I was given a choice, and I chose, for Allah says, 'Ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them.' If I knew that by adding more than seventy, he would be forgiven, I would have added more." Umar said: I was amazed at my boldness to the Messenger of Allahﷺ but Allah and His Messenger know best. When he said that to me, I turned away from him and prayed for him, then I walked with him and stood by his grave until he was buried. Then he turned away, and by Allah, he did not stay except for a short while until Allah revealed, "And never pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave." So the Messenger of Allahﷺ did not pray for a hypocrite after that, nor did he stand at his grave."

We buried a deceased person in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we had finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and we also returned with him. When he approached his door, he stopped, and we saw a woman coming towards him. He (the narrator) said: I think he recognized her. When she went away, we came to know that she was Fatimah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: What brought you out of your house, Fatimah? She replied: I came to the people of this house, Messenger of Allah, and I showed pity and expressed my condolences to them for their deceased relation. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You might have gone to the graveyard with them. She replied: I seek refuge in Allah! I heard you referring to what you mentioned. He said: If you had gone to the graveyard...He then mentioned severe words about it. I then asked Rabi'ah (a narrator of this tradition) about al-kuda (stony land). He replied: I think it means the graves. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3123)

10.18 [Machine] A Lesson in the Martyr
[Machine] "From Nubayh Al-Anzi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that he said regarding the killing of the Battle of Uhud, they carried their killed ones, then a caller called out from the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ command, 'Return the killed ones to their battleground.'"
[Machine] From Nu'bayh Al-'Anazi, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: The Prophet ﷺ went out from Al-Madinah to fight against the polytheists. My father, 'Abdullah, said to me, "O Jabir, it is not necessary for you to be with the people of Al-Madinah in order to know what will happen to us. By Allah, if it wasn't for the fact that I am leaving behind daughters, I would have loved to be killed in your presence. While I was still with the people of Al-Madinah, my cousin's son came with my father and uncle, following them on a camel. They entered Al-Madinah to bury them in our graves. Suddenly, a man came running and shouted, 'Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ orders you to return with the corpses and bury them where they were killed.' So we returned with the corpses to where they were killed.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is wounded in the cause of Allah will come on the Day of Judgment with the color of blood still bleeding and the smell of musk, and whoever is wounded in the cause of Allah will be sealed with the seal of martyrs."
Whom do you consider to be a martyr among you? They (the Companions) said: Messenger, of Allah, one who is slain in the way of Allah is a martyr. He said: Then (if this is the definition of a martyr) the martyrs of my Umma will be small in number. They asked: Messenger of Allah, who are they? He said: One who is slain in the way of Allah is a martyr; one who dies in the way of Allah, is a martyr; one who dies of plague is a martyr; one who dies of cholera is a martyr. Ibn Miqsam said: I testify the truth of your father's statement (with regard to this tradition) that the Prophet ﷺ said: One who is drowned is a martyr. (Using translation from Muslim 1915a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "Who do you consider as martyrs among you?" They said, "Those who are killed in the cause of Allah." He saidﷺ "And whoever dies in the cause of Allah is a martyr, and whoever dies from the plague is a martyr."
