[Machine] Saad complained, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him accompanied by Abdurrahman ibn Awf, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah ibn Masood. When they entered, they found him unconscious. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, he has passed away!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then wept, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept, they also wept. He said, "Do you not hear? Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, does not punish with the tears of the eyes or the sorrow of the heart, but He punishes with this," and he pointed to his tongue.

Saʿd bin 'Ubada became sick and the Prophet ﷺ along with ʿAbdur Rahman bin ʿAuf, Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas and ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud visited him to inquire about his health. When he came to him, he found him surrounded by his household and he asked, "Has he died?" They said, "No, O Allah's Apostle." The Prophet ﷺ wept and when the people saw the weeping of Messenger of Allah ﷺ they all wept. He said, "Will you listen? Allah does not punish for shedding tears, nor for the grief of the heart but he punishes or bestows His Mercy because of this." He pointed to his tongue and added, "The deceased is punished for the wailing of his relatives over him." ʿUmar used to beat with a stick and throw stones and put dust over the faces (of those who used to wail over the dead).

Has he died? They said: Messenger of Allah, it is not so. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept. When the people saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ weeping, they also began to weep. He said. Listen, Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He may show mercy.
