[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, the deceased can hear the sound of their footsteps when they turn away. If they are a believer, their prayer will be near their head, their fasting will be on their right, and their zakat will be on their left. The acts of goodness such as charity, prayer, maintaining family ties, and kindness towards people will come in front of their feet. Then it will be said to them to sit down, and they will sit down. The sun will be shown to them, nearing its setting. They will be asked, 'What do you say about this man who was among you and what do you testify about him?' They will say, 'Let me pray.' They will be told, 'You will pray, but inform us about what we ask you.' They will say, 'Let me pray.' They will be told, 'You will pray, but inform us about what we ask you.' They will say, 'Let me pray.' They will be told, 'You will pray, but inform us about what we ask you.' They will say, 'Let me pray.' They will be told, 'You will pray, but inform us about what we ask you.' They will say, 'Let me pray.' They will say, 'What do you say about this man who was among you and what do you testify about him?' They will say, 'Which man?' They will be asked, 'The man who was among you.' They will say, 'He is not guided by him.' They will be asked, 'Muhammad?' They will say, 'I heard people say, so I said as they said.' They will be told, 'You lived and died upon that. And you will be resurrected upon that, if Allah wills.' Then a door to the Hellfire will be opened before them and it will be said, 'Look at your place and what Allah has prepared for you, had you obeyed.' They will gain more regret and sorrow. Then a door to Paradise will be opened before them and it will be said, 'Look at your place and what Allah has prepared for you.' They will gain more happiness and joy. This is the saying of Allah: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.' [Ibrahim 27]." Abu Al-Hakam narrated it from Abu Hurairah, and it was said to him, "Let him rest, the rest of a bridegroom who is not awakened except by the closest of his family or the ones dearest to his heart." Then he returned to the Hadith of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurairah, who said, "And if he is a disbeliever, nothing comes to him from his head, and nothing comes to him from his right, and nothing comes to him from his left, and nothing comes to him from his feet. It will be said to him to sit down, and he will sit down in fear and terror. He will be asked, 'What do you say about this man who was among you and what do you testify about him?' He will say, 'Which man?' They will say, 'The man who was among you.' He will say, 'I say nothing about him.' They will be asked, 'Muhammad?' He will say, 'I didn't hear anything about him.' They will be told, 'You lived and died upon that. And you will be resurrected upon that, if Allah wills.' Then a door to Paradise will be opened before them and it will be said, 'Look at your place and what Allah has prepared for you, had you obeyed.' They will gain more regret and destruction. Then his grave will constrict upon him until his ribs close in on each other. This is the saying of Allah: 'Then indeed, for him is a restricted living. And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.' [Ta-Ha 124]."

bukhari:3911Muḥammad > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad from my father > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb > Anas b. Mālik

Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at Medina with Abu Bakr, riding behind him on the same camel. Abu Bakr was an elderly man known to the people, while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a youth that was unknown. Thus, if a man met Abu Bakr, he would say, "O Abu Bakr! Who is this man in front of you?" Abu Bakr would say, "This man shows me the Way," One would think that Abu Bakr meant the road, while in fact, Abu Bakr meant the way of virtue and good. Then Abu Bakr looked behind and saw a horse-rider pursuing them. He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! This is a horse-rider pursuing us." The Prophet ﷺ looked behind and said, "O Allah! Cause him to fall down." So the horse threw him down and got up neighing. After that the rider, Suraqa said, "O Allah's Prophet! Order me whatever you want." The Prophet said, "Stay where you are and do not allow anybody to reach us." So, in the first part of the day Suraqa was an enemy of Allah's Prophet and in the last part of it, he was a protector. Then Allah's Apostle alighted by the side of the Al-Harra and sent a message to the Ansar, and they came to Allah's Prophet and Abu Bakr, and having greeted them, they said, "Ride (your she-camels) safe and obeyed." Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr rode and the Ansar, carrying their arms, surrounded them. The news that Allah's Prophet had come circulated in Medina. The people came out and were eagerly looking and saying "Allah's Prophet has come! Allah's Prophet has come! So the Prophet ﷺ went on till he alighted near the house of Abu Ayub. While the Prophet ﷺ was speaking with the family members of Abu Ayub, ʿAbdullah bin Salam heard the news of his arrival while he himself was picking the dates for his family from his family garden. He hurried to the Prophet ﷺ carrying the dates which he had collected for his family from the garden. He listened to Allah's Prophet and then went home. Then Allah's Prophet said, "Which is the nearest of the houses of our kith and kin?" Abu Ayub replied, "Mine, O Allah's Prophet! This is my house and this is my gate." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and prepare a place for our midday rest." Abu Ayub said, "Get up (both of you) with Allah's Blessings." So when Allah's Prophet went into the house, ʿAbdullah bin Salam came and said "I testify that you (i.e. Muhammad) are Apostle of Allah and that you have come with the Truth. The Jews know well that I am their chief and the son of their chief and the most learned amongst them and the son of the most learned amongst them. So send for them (i.e. Jews) and ask them about me before they know that I have embraced Islam, for if they know that they will say about me things which are not correct." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for them, and they came and entered. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "O (the group of) Jews! Woe to you: be afraid of Allah. By Allah except Whom none has the right to be worshipped, you people know for certain, that I am Apostle of Allah and that I have come to you with the Truth, so embrace Islam." The Jews replied, "We do not know this." So they said this to the Prophet and he repeated it thrice. Then he said, "What sort of a man is ʿAbdullah bin Salam amongst you?" They said, "He is our chief and the son of our chief and the most learned man, and the son of the most learned amongst us." He said, "What would you think if he should embrace Islam?" They said, "Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam." He said, " What would you think if he should embrace Islam?" They said, "Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam." He said, "What would you think if he should embrace Islam?" They said, "Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam." He said, "O Ibn Salam! Come out to them." He came out and said, "O (the group of) Jews! Be afraid of Allah except Whom none has the right to be worshipped. You know for certain that he is Apostle of Allah and that he has brought a True Religion!' They said, "You tell a lie." On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned them out.

Is there not for you a model pattern in me? And when they narrated this to him (Sa'd b. Hisham), he returned to his wife, though he had divorced her and made (people) witness to his reconciliation. He then came to Ibn 'Abbas and asked him about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn 'Abbas said: Should I not lead you to one who knows best amongst the people of the world about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Who is it? He (Ibn 'Abbas) said: It is 'A'isha. So go to her and ask her (about Witr) and then come to me and inform me about her answer that she would give you. So I came to Hakim b. Aflah and requested him to take me to her. He said: I would not go to her, for I forbade her to speak anything (about the conflict) between the two groupS, but she refused (to accept my advice) and went (to participate in that corflict). I (requested) him (Hakim) with an oath to lead me to her. So we went to 'A'isha and we begged permission to meet her. She granted us permission and we went in. She said: Are you Hakim? (She recognised him.) He replied: Yes. She said: Who is there with you? He said: He is Sa'd b. Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: He is Hisham b. 'Amir. She blessed him ('Amir) with mercy from Allah and spoke good of him (Qatada said that he died as a martyr in Uhud). I said: Mother of the Faithful, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Don't you read the Qur'an? I said: Yes. Upon this she said: The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Qur'an. He said: I felt inclined to get up and not ask anything (further) till death. But then I changed my mind and said: Inform me about the observance (of the night prayer) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Did you not recite:" O thou wrapped up"? He said: Yes. She said: Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, made the observance of the night prayer at the beginning of this Surah obligatory. So the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him and his Companions around him observed this (night prayer) for one year. Allah held back the concluding portion of this Surah for twelve months in the Heaven till (at the end of this period) Allah revealed the concluding verses of this Surah which lightened (the burden of this prayer), and the night prayer became a supererogatory prayer after being an obligatory one. I said: Mother of the Faithful, inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: I used to prepare tooth stick for him and water for his ablution, and Allah would rouse him to the extent He wished during the night. He would use the tooth stick, and perform ablution, and would offer nine rak'ahs, and would not sit but in the eighth one and would remember Allah, and praise Him and supplicate Him, then he would get up without uttering the salutation and pray the ninth rak'ah. He would then sit, remember, praise Him and supplicate Him and then utter a salutation loud enough for us to hear. He would then pray two rak'ahs sitting after uttering the salutation, and that made eleven rak'ahs. O my son, but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew old and put on flesh, he observed Witr of seven, doing in the two rak'ahs as he had done formerly, and that made nine. O my son, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer, he liked to keep on observing it, and when sleep or pain overpowered him and made it impossible (for him) to observe prayer in the night, he prayed twelve rak'ahs daring the day. I am not aware of Allah's Prophet ﷺ having recited the whole Qur'an during one single night, or praying through the night till morning, or fasting a complete month, except Ramadan. He (the narrator) said: I then went to Ibn 'Abbas and narrated to him the hadith (transmitted from her), and he said: She says the truth If I went to her and got into her presence, I would have listened to it orally from her. He said: If I were to know that you do not go to her. I would not have transmitted this hadith to you narrated by her.

tirmidhi:2382Sūwayd b. Naṣr > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak > Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ > al-Walīd b. Abū al-Walīd Abū ʿUthmān al-Madanī > ʿUqbah b. Muslim > Shufay al-Aṣbaḥī

" Who is this?" They said: "Abu Hurairah." (He said):So I got close to him until I was sitting in front of him as he was narrating to the people. When he was silent and alone, I said to him: " I ask youabsolute truth if you would narrate to me a Hadith which you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, That you understand and know." So Abu Hurairah said: "You want me to narrate a Hadith to you which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated to me that I understand and know." Then Abu Hurairah began sobbing profusely. We sat for a while, then he recovered and said: "I shall narrate to you a Hadith which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated in this House, while there was no one with us other than he and I." Then, again, Abu Hurairah began sobbing severely. Then he recovered, and wiped his face, and said: "you want me to narrate to you a Hadith which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated while he and I were sitting in this House, and no one was with us but he and I." Then Abu Hurairah began sobbing severely. Then he bent, falling on his face, so I supported him for a long time. Then he recovered and said: "The Messenger of Allah narrated to me that on the Day of Judgement, Allah, Most High, will descend to His slaves t judge between them. Every nation shall be kneeling. The first of those who will be called before him will be a man who memorized the Qur'an, and a man who was killed in Allah's cause, and a wealthy man. Allah will say to the reciter: 'Did I not teach you what I revealed to My Messenger?" He says: 'Of course O Lord!' He says: 'Then what did you do with what you learned?' He said: 'I would stand (in prayer reciting) with it during all hours of the night and all hours of the day.' Then Allah would say to him: 'You have lied.' And the angels will say: 'You have lied.'Allah will say to him: 'Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is a reciter. And that was said.' The person with the wealth will be brought, and Allah will say to him: 'Was I not so generous with you, such that I did not leave you having any need from anyone?' He will say: 'Of course O Lord!' He says: 'Then what did you do with what I gave to you?' He says: 'I would nurture the ties of kinship and give charity.' Then Allah will say to him: 'You have lied.' And the angels will say to him: 'You have lied.' Allah, Most High, will say: 'Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is so generous, and that was said.' Then the one who was killed in Allah's cause shall be brought, and Allah will say to him : 'For what were you killed?' So he says: 'I was commanded to fight in Your cause ,so I fought until I was killed.' Allah [Most High] will say to him: 'You have lied.' And the angels will say to him: 'You have lied.' Allah [Most High] will say: 'Rather, you wanted it be said that so-and-so is brave, and that was said.' "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺhit me on my knees and said: 'O Abu Hurairah! These first three are the creatures of Allah with whom the fire will be enflamed on the Day of Judgement.'" Al-Walid Abu 'Uthman Al-Mada'ini said: "So 'Uqbah bin Muslim informed me that Shaufaiy, is the one who entered upon Mu'awiyah to inform him about this." Abu Uthman said: 'This has been done with these people, then how about with those who remain among the people?" Then Mu'awiyah begin weeping so intensely, that we thought that he will kill himself with excessive weeping. We said: "This man came to us to cause evil." Then Mu'awiyah recovered, wiped off his face and said: "Allah and His Messenger told the truth: Whosoever desires the life of the world and its glitter, then we shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds therein, and they shall have no diminution therein. They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter Fire, and vain are the deeds they did therein. And of no effect is that which they used to do."

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Gharīb.

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ
ahmad:656Isḥāq b. ʿĪsá al-Ṭabbāʿ > Yaḥyá b. Sulaym > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUthmān b. Khuthaym > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿIyāḍ b. ʿAmr al-Qārī

ʿAbdullah bin Shaddad came and entered upon ʿAʿishah ؓ when we were sitting with her, as he was returning from Iraq during the time when ‘Ali ؓ was murdered. She said to him: O ʿAbdullah bin Shaddad, will you tell me the truth about what I am going to ask you? Tell me about these people whom ‘Ali ؓ killed. He said: Why shouldnʿt I tell you the truth? She said: Tell me about them. He said: When ʿAli ؓ corresponded with Muʿawiyah and the two arbitrators gave their verdict, eight thousand of the pious rebelled against him and camped in a land called Harooraʿ, near Koofah. They criticised him and said: You have taken off a chemise that Allah caused you to wear and a title that Allah gave to you, then you went ahead and asked people to issue a decree concerning the religion of Allah. There is no ruling except the ruling of Allah, may He be exalted. When ʿAli ؓ heard about their criticism of him and the reason why they had split from him, he told his caller not to admit anyone but those who had memorised the Qurʿan. When the house was filled with people who had memorised the Qurʿan, he called for a large Mushaf and put it front of him, and he started tapping it with his hand, saying: O Mushaf, tell the people. The people called out: O Ameer al-Muʿmineen, how could you ask it? It is only ink and paper, but we could speak on the basis of what we understand from it. What do you want? He said: These companions of yours who rebelled, between me and them is the Book of Allah, and Allah says in His Book concerning a woman and a man: ʿIf you fear a breach between them twain (the man and his wife), appoint (two) arbitrators, one from his family and the other from hers; if they both wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation.ʿ [an-Nisa 4:35]. The ummah of Muhammad is more important with regard to life and sanctity than a woman and a man. They got angry with me when I wrote a document between me and Muʿawiyah and wrote ʿAli bin Abi Talib [without adding the title Ameer al-Muʿmineen]. But Suhail bin ʿAmr came to us when we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Hudaibiyah, when he made a peace deal with Quraish, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote, ʿIn the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.ʿ Suhail said: Do not write, In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He said: What should we write? He said: Write: ʿIn Your Name, O Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Write ʿMuhammad the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.ʿ He [Suhail] said: If I knew that you were the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would not have opposed you. So he wrote: This is what was agreed by Muhammad bin ʿAbdullah with Quraish. And Allah says in His Book: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Dayʿ [Al-Ahzab 33:21]. So ʿAli sent ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas ؓ to them and I went out with him until we reached the middle of their camp. Ibnul-Kawwaʿ stood up and addressed the people, saying: O bearers of the Qurʿan, this is ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas ؓ . Whoever does not know him, I know of the Book of Allah what can tell you about him, He is one of those concerning whom the words ʿthey are a quarrelsome peopleʿ [Az-Zukhruf 43:58] were revealed. Tell him to go back to the one who sent him and do not discuss the Book of Allah with him. Their spokesmen stood up and said: By Allah, we will discuss the Book of Allah. If he says something sound and true that we recognise we will follow him, and if he says something false we will reject his false argument. So they discussed the Book with ‘Abdullah for three days, and four thousand of them recanted and all of them repented, including Ibnul-Kawwaʿ. He took them to ʿAli in Koofah, and ʿAli sent word to the rest of them, saying: You know the turmoil between us and our opponents. Stay wherever you wish until the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ is united. The deal between us and you is that you should not shed any blood that it is forbidden to shed or commit acts of banditry on the roads or do wrong to any Non Muslim under Muslim protection. If you do that, we will declare war, for Allah does not love those who betray. ʿAʿishah ؓ said: O Ibn Shaddad, did he kill them? He said: By Allah, no sooner had he sent this message to them but they committed acts of banditry, shed blood and regarded it as permissible to harm Ahludh-Dhimmah (non-Muslims living under Muslim protection). She said: Do you swear by Allah? He said: I swear by Allah besides Whom there is no other god that this is what happened. She said: I have heard that the people of Iraq are talking and saying dhuth-thuda, dhuth-thuda [i.e., the one with a deformed arm that looks like a breast]. He said: I saw him and I was with ‘Ali ؓ when he was examining the slain. He called the people and said: Do you know this one? How many of them came and said: I saw him praying in the mosque of Banu So and so, and I saw him praying in the mosque of Banu So and so. And there was no proof of who he was except that. She said: What did ʿAli say when he stood over him, as the people of Iraq claim? He said: I heard him say: Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. She said: Did you hear him say anything other than that? He said: No, by Allah. She said: Yes, Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. May Allah have mercy on ʿAli ؓ : it was his habit, if he saw something he liked, to say: Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. But the people of Iraq fabricated lies against him and added words to what he said.

ahmad:17777Yaʿqūb b. Ibrāhīm from my father > Ibn Isḥāq > Yazīd b. Abū Ḥabīb

[Machine] About the trench, I gathered a group of men from the Quraysh who used to see my location and hear from me. So I said to them, "Do you know, by Allah, I see Muhammad's matter rising greatly, and I have seen a vision. What do you see in it?" They asked, "What did you see?" I said, "I saw that we meet with the Najashi (King of Abyssinia), so that if Muhammad appears over our people, we will be with the Najashi. Because being under his authority is more beloved to us than being under the authority of Muhammad. And if our people appear, they will only bring us goodness." They said, "This plan is good." So I told them to gather what we will present to the Najashi, and the most beloved thing that could be presented to him was Adham from our land. So we gathered a lot of Adham for him, and we traveled until we reached him. By Allah, we were with him when 'Amr ibn Umayyah Ad-Damri came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him to the Najashi regarding Ja'far and his companions. 'Amr entered upon him and then left his presence. So I said to my companions, "This is 'Amr ibn Umayyah. If I had met the Najashi and asked him for him, he would have given him to me and I would have killed him. So when Quraysh saw that I had relieved them by killing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they let me enter upon him. So I prostrated before him as I used to do, and he said, 'Welcome, my friend. Did you bring me anything from your land?' I said, 'Yes, O King, I have brought you a lot of Adham.' He was amazed by them and liked them. Then I said to him, 'O King, I have seen a man who came from you, and he is a Messenger of a man who is an enemy to us. Give him to me so that I can kill him, for he has harmed some of our nobles and elites.' The Najashi became angry and raised his hand, striking his nose. I thought he had broken it, and if the earth had split open for me, I would have entered it due to him. Then I said to him, 'O King, by Allah, if I had thought that you disliked this, I would not have asked you for it.' He said, 'Do you ask me to give you the Messenger of a man whom the greatest catastrophe used to come to, like that which used to come to Musa, so that you can kill him?' I said, 'O King, is he such?' He said, 'Woe unto you, O 'Amr! Obey him and follow him, for by Allah, he is on the truth and he will be victorious. There will come a time when people will appear against him as Musa appeared against Fir'awn and his soldiers.' I said, 'So pledge allegiance to him for Islam.' He said, 'Yes.' He extended his hand and I pledged allegiance to him for Islam. Then I went out to my companions with my vision being different from what it used to be, and I concealed my Islam from my companions. Then I went out following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to become Muslim. I met Khalid ibn Al-Walid, who was approaching from Makkah, and I said, 'Where are you, O Abu Sulayman?' He said, 'By Allah, the canyons are straight, and that man is truly a Prophet. I will go and become Muslim.' I asked, 'Until when?' He said, 'By Allah, I only came to become Muslim.' I said, 'We have preceded you in pledging allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So we arrived to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Khalid ibn Al-Walid became Muslim and pledged allegiance to him. Then I approached and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you forgive me for what has passed of my sins and that you do not mention them. He ﷺ said, 'O 'Amr, pledge allegiance, for indeed Islam erases what came before it, and Hijrah erases what came before it.' I said, 'So I pledged allegiance to him,' and then I departed." Ibn Ishaq said, "I have narrated this story to you from a trustworthy person." Uthman ibn Talhah ibn Abi Talhah was with them when they became Muslim.

ahmad:2514Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd > Shahr > Ibn ʿAbbās Ḥaḍarat ʿIṣābah from al-Yahūd Nabī Allāh ﷺ Yawmāfaqālūā Yā Abū al-Qāsim Ḥaddithnā > Khilāl Nasʾaluk > Hun Lā Yaʿlamuhun Ilā Nabī

[Machine] Ibn Abbas attended a group of Jews who came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Abu Al-Qasim, tell us about something that only a prophet knows." The Prophet said, "Ask me about whatever you want, but grant me the protection of Allah and what Jacobﷺ made his sons swear to, that if I tell you something, you will follow me in Islam." They agreed. They asked him about four things: which food the Israelites prohibited for themselves before the revelation of the Torah, how the water of a man and a woman differ, how a male offspring is conceived, and how the Prophet, an unlettered person, dreams and who his guardian angel is. The Prophet replied, "You have to abide by the covenant and promise with Allah. If I inform you, will you follow me?" They agreed. Then the Prophet told him, and they acknowledged. The Prophet then said, "I will ask you with the One who revealed the Torah to Moses, do you know that when Jacobﷺ fell seriously ill and his disease persisted, he vowed to Allah that if He healed him, he will prohibit for himself the most beloved food and the most beloved drink to him." They agreed. The Prophet said, "I bear witness with you by Allah who revealed the Torah to Moses. Do you know that the sperm of a man is thick and white, while the sperm of a woman is thin and yellow? Whichever of them surpasses in strength will dictate the gender of the offspring by the permission of Allah. If the man's sperm prevails over the woman's, the child will be male, and if the woman's sperm prevails over the man's, the child will be female by the permission of Allah." They agreed. The Prophet said, "I bear witness with you by Allah who revealed the Torah to Moses. Do you know that the eyes of this unlettered Prophet sleep, but his heart does not?" They agreed. Then they asked, "Who is your guardian angel among the angels?" The Prophet replied, "My guardian angel is Gabriel, peace be upon him. Whenever Allah sent a prophet, Gabriel has always been his guardian angel." They said, "If it were otherwise, we would have followed you and believed in you." The Prophet asked, "What prevents you from believing in me?" They replied, "Because we are your enemies." At that moment, Allah revealed the verse, "Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but] he who has brought the Qur'an down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah"" (Quran 2:97), until the verse, "And behind them is the Book of Allah, which they do not know" (Quran 2:101). Then Allah further revealed, "Anger is upon anger" (Quran 2:90).

[Machine] The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you have any difficulty seeing the sun when there are no clouds covering it?" They replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He then asked, "Do you have any difficulty seeing the moon on a full moon night when there are no clouds covering it?" They again replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Just like that, you will see Him on the Day of Resurrection. Allah will gather the people and ask those who worshipped something, 'Follow what you worshipped.' So those who worshipped the moon will follow the moon, those who worshipped the sun will follow the sun, and those who worshipped the idols will follow the idols. And this Ummah will be left with its hypocrites. Allah will come to them in a form that they do not recognize, and He will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is our place until our Lord comes to us.' When our Lord comes to them, they will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them in the form that they recognize, and He will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'You are our Lord,' and they will follow Him."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A bridge will be set up over Hellfire." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will be the first one to cross it on that day. O Allah, grant us safety, grant us safety.' This bridge will have hooks like the thorns of the Sa'dan tree. Have you seen the Sa'dan tree?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Indeed, it is like the thorns of the Sa'dan tree, but its size and greatness are known only to Allah. People will be snatched away by their deeds. Among them will be those who are caught by their foreheads with the deeds they used to do, and there will be those who are caught by their backsides. They will be saved until when Allah is finished passing judgment among His servants and He wants to bring out of the Fire those who will be entitled to His mercy from among those who themselves said, 'Laa ilaha illallah (There is no God worthy of worship except Allah).' Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) will order the angels, 'Bring out those who used to utter La ilaha illAllah. And the angels will know them by the marks of prostration on their faces and by the traces of wudu' (ablution) on their limbs. Allah has forbidden the Fire to consume the traces of prostrations or ablution.'" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Thus, they will be brought out, having been burned and turned to charcoal. Then the water of life will be poured over them and they will grow just like seeds do in the silt carried by floodwaters. There will be a man who will be facing the Fire and will say, 'O Lord, haven't You promised me that You would not wron [...]

[Machine] On the authority of Al-Zuhri regarding the statement of Allah (ﷻ), "{Every nation will be called to its book}" [Surah Al-Jathiyah: 28], on the authority of 'Ata ibn Yazid Al-Laythi, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah who said, the people said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He (the Prophet ﷺ) said, "Do you have any difficulty looking at the sun when there are no clouds in the sky?" They said, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you have any difficulty looking at the moon on the night of a full moon when there are no clouds covering it?" They said, "No, O Messenger of Allah." 'Abdul Razzaq once asked, "Do you have any difficulty looking at the moon on the night of a full moon when there are no clouds covering it?" They said, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He (the Prophet ﷺ) said, "You will see your Lord on the Day of Resurrection just as you have no difficulty looking at the sun or the moon." Allah will gather the people and say, "Whoever used to worship something, let them follow it." So those who used to worship the moon will follow the moon, those who used to worship the sun will follow the sun, and those who used to worship the false deities will follow the false deities. Then only the hypocrites will remain. Allah (ﷻ) will come to them in a form that they do not recognize and say, "I am your Lord." They will say, "We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is our station until our Lord comes to us." When our Lord comes to them, they will recognize Him. Allah (ﷻ) will come to them in a form that they recognize and say, "I am your Lord." They will say, "You are our Lord." Then they will follow Him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "A bridge will be set up over Hellfire." The Prophet ﷺ said that he will be the first to cross the bridge and the matter of the messengers will be settled that day. The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, grant peace, peace." He described it as being like the thorns of the flower of Sa'dan. He asked, "Have you seen the thorns of the flower of Sa'dan?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "It is like the thorns of the flower of Sa'dan, except that no one knows its exact size except Allah. It will seize the people according to their deeds. Yet some will be saved, such as the wicked who will be thrown into it and those who will be saved. When Allah (ﷻ) finishes judging between people and intends to bring out those who He wants to have mercy upon from the fire

ahmad:19898Yaḥyá > ʿAwf > Abū Rajāʾ > ʿImarān b. Ḥuṣayn

Once we were traveling with the Prophet ﷺ and we carried on traveling till the last part of the night and then we (halted at a place) and slept (deeply). There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. So it was only the heat of the sun that made us to wake up and the first to wake up was so and so, then so and so and then so and so (the narrator ʿAuf said that Abu Raja' had told him their names but he had forgotten them) and the fourth person to wake up was ʿUmar bin Al- Khattab. And whenever the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep, nobody would wake up him till he himself used to get up as we did not know what was happening (being revealed) to him in his sleep. So, ʿUmar got up and saw the condition of the people, and he was a strict man, so he said, "Allahu Akbar" and raised his voice with Takbir, and kept on saying loudly till the Prophet ﷺ got up because of it. When he got up, the people informed him about what had happened to them. He said, "There is no harm (or it will not be harmful). Depart!" So they departed from that place, and after covering some distance the Prophet ﷺ stopped and asked for some water to perform the ablution. So he performed the ablution and the call for the prayer was pronounced and he led the people in prayer. After he finished from the prayer, he saw a man sitting aloof who had not prayed with the people. He asked, "O so and so! What has prevented you from praying with us?" He replied, "I am Junub and there is no water. " The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform Tayammum with (clean) earth and that is sufficient for you." Then the Prophet ﷺ proceeded on and the people complained to him of thirst. Thereupon he got down and called a person (the narrator ʿAuf added that Abu Raja' had named him but he had forgotten) and ʿAli, and ordered them to go and bring water. So they went in search of water and met a woman who was sitting on her camel between two bags of water. They asked, "Where can we find water?" She replied, "I was there (at the place of water) this hour yesterday and my people are behind me." They requested her to accompany them. She asked, "Where?" They said, "To Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." She said, "Do you mean the man who is called the Sabi, (with a new religion)?" They replied, "Yes, the same person. So come along." They brought her to the Prophet ﷺ and narrated the whole story. He said, "Help her to dismount." The Prophet ﷺ asked for a pot, then he opened the mouths of the bags and poured some water into the pot. Then he closed the big openings of the bags and opened the small ones and the people were called upon to drink and water their animals. So they all watered their animals and they (too) all quenched their thirst and also gave water to others and last of all the Prophet ﷺ gave a pot full of water to the person who was Junub and told him to pour it over his body. The woman was standing and watching all that which they were doing with her water. By Allah, when her water bags were returned the looked like as if they were more full (of water) than they had been before (Miracle of Messenger of Allah ﷺ) Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to collect something for her; so dates, flour and Sawiq were collected which amounted to a good meal that was put in a piece of cloth. She was helped to ride on her camel and that cloth full of foodstuff was also placed in front of her and then the Prophet ﷺ said to her, "We have not taken your water but Allah has given water to us." She returned home late. Her relatives asked her: "O so and so what has delayed you?" She said, "A strange thing! Two men met me and took me to the man who is called the Sabi' and he did such and such a thing. By Allah, he is either the greatest magician between this and this (gesturing with her index and middle fingers raising them towards the sky indicating the heaven and the earth) or he is Allah's true Apostle." Afterwards the Muslims used to attack the pagans around her abode but never touched her village. One day she said to her people, "I think that these people leave you purposely. Have you got any inclination to Islam?" They obeyed her and all of them embraced Islam. Abu ʿAbdullah said: The word Saba'a means "The one who has deserted his old religion and embraced a new religion." Abul 'Ailya [??] said, "The SʿAbis are a sect of people of the Scripture who recite the Book of Psalms." (Using translation from Bukhārī 344)

ibnhibban:1301Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. al-Muthanná > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī > Yaḥyá al-Qaṭṭān > ʿAwf > Abū Rajāʾ > ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we traveled at night until it was late in the night. Then we experienced this incident, and there is no better incident for travelers than this. None of us woke up except due to the heat of the sun. He (the narrator) said, "The first to wake up was so and so, then so and so, then so and so." And they were known as Abu Rajaa's group, but Owf forgot them. Then Umar ibn Al-Khattab, the fourth one, woke up. He (the narrator) said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sleep, we would not wake him up until he woke up, because we did not know what might happen to him in his sleep." He (the narrator) said, "So when Umar woke up and saw what had befallen the people, he exclaimed and raised his voice in takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar), and he continued to exclaim and raise his voice in takbeer until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up due to his voice. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up, he complained about what had happened to them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No harm or danger, proceed.' So he (Umar) traveled a short distance and then stopped. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended and called for water, performed ablution, and the call to prayer was announced. He led the people in prayer. When he completed his prayer, he saw a man who had not prayed with the rest of the people. He said, 'What prevented you, O so and so, from praying with the people?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I was experiencing sexual impurity and I did not have water.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Go and use the desert sand, for it will suffice you.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled, and the people complained to him about their thirst. So he descended and called for so and so, who was known as Abu Rajaa, and Owf forgot about him, and he called for Ali. He said, 'Go and fetch us water.' So they met a woman carrying water on a camel. They said to her, 'Where is the water?' She said, 'I made a promise to provide water at this hour yesterday, but we are out.' They said, 'Then go,' and she said, 'Where to?' They said, 'To the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' She said, 'Is this the one they call As-Saabi?' They said, 'Yes, that is the one.' So they brought her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about it. He (the narrator) said, 'They dismounted her from her camel, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for a container and emptied the water from the mouths of the two water skins. He splashed their openings and released the knot of the water container. Then he called out to the people to drink. So he gave water to whomever he wished and they drank. Finally, he said to the one who had experienced sexual impurity, 'Go, and may it suffice you.' He said, 'By Allah, it did indeed relieve me of the need, but it seems to us that the water was more plentiful than when we first started. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Gather food for her.' So he collected some dates, flour, and barley until they had gathered a lot of food. They placed it in a garment and carried it on her camel. And they placed the garment between her hands. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, 'You know that we did not take anything of your water, but it was Allah who provided it for us.' She went to her people, and they asked her, 'What detained you, O so and so?' She said, 'It is amazing, two men met me and took me to the one they call As-Saabi, and he did such and such to me. By Allah, it seems that he is more skilled in magic than anyone between this and that.' Then she said to her people, 'By Allah, these people invite you to Islam, so is there any Islam for you?' [Machine] According to the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "When a person is placed in their grave, they can hear the footsteps of those who are walking away from them. If the deceased was a believer, then their prayer will be at their head, their fasting will be to their right, and their charity will be to their left. The good deeds of giving in charity, maintaining family ties, and doing good to others will be near their feet. Then it will be said to them, 'Sit up,' and they will sit up. The sun will be brought near to them and the time for sunset will be delayed. It will be said to them, 'Do you see this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to? What do you say about him?' They will reply, 'Leave me alone until I pray.' Then they will say, 'You will soon find out about what we are asking you.' They will ask again, "What do you say about this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to?' The person will say, 'I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and that he brought the truth from Allah.' Then they will be told, 'You have been given life and death for this, and you will be resurrected if Allah wills.' Then a door from the doors of Paradise will be opened for them, and they will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' They will experience an increase in happiness and delight. Then a door from the doors of Hell will also be opened for them, and they will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it if you were to disobey Him.' They will experience an increase in sadness and remorse. Then their grave will be expanded for them to a distance of seventy arm lengths and it will be illuminated for them. Their body will return to the state it was when they were first buried, and their fragrant odor will be in the breezes of Paradise. This is what Allah meant in His saying, 'Allah will establish those who believe with the word that stands firm in the life of this world and in the Hereafter' until the end of the verse. The Prophet ﷺ also said, 'When a disbeliever is buried, nothing comes to him from the front, right, left, or back. Then he will be told to sit up, and he will sit up in fear and fright. It will be said to him, 'Do you see this man whom the people speak about and bear witness to? What do you say about him?' He will reply, 'Which man?' It will be said, 'The one you were with.' He will say, 'I don't know.' I heard the people saying something, so I said what the people were saying.' It will be said to him, 'You have been given life and death for this, and you will be resurrected if Allah wills.' Then a door from the doors of Hell will be opened for him, and he will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' He will experience an increase in regret and punishment. Then a door from the doors of Paradise will also be opened for him, and he will be told, 'This is your place from it and what Allah has prepared for you in it if you were to obey Him.' He will experience an increase in regret and punishment. Then his grave will be constricted until his ribs will be crushed. This is the straitened life that Allah mentioned in His saying, 'Indeed, he will have a depressing life, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.'"

[Machine] We were on a journey with the Prophet ﷺ, and we traveled throughout the night until we reached the end of the night before dawn. We had an encounter, and there is no better encounter for a traveler than it. We were only awakened by the heat of the sun, as it was the first time Bilal had awakened, followed by others. Umar ibn al-Khattab was the last to wake up. When the Prophet ﷺ slept, no one would wake him up until he woke up himself, because we did not know what would happen to him in his sleep. When Umar woke up and saw what had happened to the people, he became very upset and raised his voice in takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar). He continued to say takbeer and raise his voice until he woke up the Prophet ﷺ with his voice. The people complained to him about what had happened to them, and he said, "Do not worry, continue the journey." So we continued the journey, and soon after that, we stopped and the Prophet ﷺ called for wudu. He performed wudu and then the call to prayer was made, and he prayed with the people. He prolonged his prayer, and when a man wanted to leave, he did not pray with the people. The Prophet ﷺ asked him why he did not pray with the people, and he said it was because he had janabah (sexual impurity) and no water. The Prophet ﷺ told him to go to the nearby irrigated land (sa'id), as it would be sufficient for him. Then the people complained to him about thirst, so we stopped again and he called a man named Abu Raja' and called Ali. He told them to go and search for water, so they set off and met a woman with two water containers on a camel. They approached her and asked for water, and she said she had made a promise about the water until that time. They told her to go, and she asked where to go, and they said to the Prophet ﷺ. She asked if it was the one they called As-Saabi', and they confirmed. So she went with them to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. He called for a vessel and placed the water containers in it, then he rinsed his mouth and returned the water to the container, and then he repeated it with the water containers. Then he tied the mouths of the containers and let the water flow, and called out to the people to drink and quench their thirst. He gave the one who had janabah his portion and told him to pour the remaining water on himself. By Allah, she was still standing, watching what he was doing with her water. It seemed to us that they were even more amazed than she was. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Gather for her whatever is between a jar and a sa'iqa and a handful." So they gathered food for her in a garment and placed it in front of her. The Prophet ﷺ told her, "You know, by Allah, we did not take anything from your water, but it was Allah who provided it for us." She went to her people, who were waiting for her, and they asked her why she had been delayed. She said, "By Allah, I have never seen people like them before. Either they are sorcerers, or he is truly the messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Muslims would change places with those around her who were polytheists and would not be struck by the drought that followed. One day, she asked her people if they were interested in Islam, and they obediently went and all embraced Islam.

(Using translation from Aḥmad 656)
