Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to invoke (Allah): "Allahumma ini aʿudhu bika min 'adhabi-l-Qabr, wa min 'adhabi-nnar, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-lmamat, wa min fitnati-l-masih ad-dajjal. (O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the punishment in the grave and from the punishment in the Hell fire and from the afflictions of life and death, and the afflictions of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدْعُو اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice and feeble old age; I seek refuge with You from afflictions of life and death and seek refuge with You from the punishment in the grave."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Allah's Prophet used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the afflictions of life and death."

سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ؓ يَقُولُ كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas used to recommend these five (statements) and say that the Prophet ﷺ said so (and they are): "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah saying, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from miserliness."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَرَمِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ

Seek refuge with Allah by saying the words which the Prophet ﷺ used to say while seeking refuge with Allah, "0 Allah! I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from reaching a degraded geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world and from the punishment in the grave."

تَعَوَّذُوا بِكَلِمَاتٍ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِهِنَّ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge, saying:

allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-nār, wa-min ʿadhābi al-nār, wa-aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-qabr wa-aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi al-qabr, wa-aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-ghinā, wa-aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-faqr, wa-aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-masīḥ al-dajjāl

(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire, and from the punishment of the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah.)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ:

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ النَّارِ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْغِنَى، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْفَقْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ».

The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us these words as he used to teach us the Book (Qur'an): "O Allah! seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to (senile) geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the affliction of the world and from the punishment in the Hereafter."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا هَؤُلاَءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ كَمَا تُعَلَّمُ الْكِتَابَةُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ نُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) said: When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say:" O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal" (Antichrist).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When any one of you completes the last tashahhud. he should seek refuge with Allah from four (trials). I.e. from the torment of Hell, from the torment of grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the mischief of Masih at-Dajjal (Antichrist). This hadith has been narrated by al-Auza'i with the same chain of transmitters but with these words:" When any one of you completes the tashahhud" and he made no mention of the words" the last".

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا فَرَغَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ التَّشَهُّدِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا هِقْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ يُونُسَ جَمِيعًا عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ وَقَالَ إِذَا فَرَغَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ التَّشَهُّدِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الآخِرَ

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said: O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the grave, and the torment of Hell, and the trial of life and death and the mischief of Masih al-Dajjal.

نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَشَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell, seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave, and seek refuge with Allah from the trial of Masih al-Dajjal and seek refuge with Allah from the trial of life and death.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عُوذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ عُوذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ عُوذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ عُوذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from the torment of the grave, torment of Hell and the trial of Dajjal.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ

When one of you finishes the last tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things: the punishment in Hell, the punishment in the grave, the trail of life and death, and the evil of Antichrist. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 983)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا فَرَغَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ التَّشَهُّدِ فَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَشَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

"I heard Mus'ab bin Sa'd (narrate) about his father: 'He used to tech us five things, which he said that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to recite in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from reaching the age of senility, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave).'" I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge from You from the trails of Al-Masihid-Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. "I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, walharami, wal-maghrami, wal-ma'thami, wa a'udhu bika min sharril-masihid-dajjali, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nar (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, debt and sin, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the Al-Masihid-Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire.)'" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the Fire and the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of Al-Masihid-Dajjal." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5518)

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) said: When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say:" O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal" (Antichrist). قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَعِذْ بِاللهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَشَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

The Prophet [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wa 'audhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamati (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, old age, miserliness and cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death.)" أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from indolence, from cowardice, from senility, from miserliness, and I seek refuge in Thee from the torment of the grave and from trial of the life and death." (Using translation from Muslim 2706a)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَقَدْ ذَكَرَ فِيهِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتَ

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-harami, 'adhabil-qabr wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and miserliness and old age, and the torment of the grave, and the trials of life and death.)" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

"The Prophet [SAW] used to say in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa fitnatid-dajjali, wa 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, cowardice, miserliness, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.)" كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

[AI] He used to say after the final Tashahhud of the Isha prayer some words that he greatly emphasized. أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ بَعْدَ التَّشَهُّدِ فِي الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ كَلِمَاتٍ كَانَ يُعَظِّمُهُنَّ جِدًّا يَقُولُ أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ قَالَ كَانَ يُعَظِّمُهُنَّ وَيَذْكُرُهُنَّ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I did and from the evil of what I did not." (Using translation from Muslim 2716d)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us this supplication as he taught us the surah from the Qur'an. He would say: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge from You from the trails of Al-Masihid-Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُعَلِّمُهُمْ هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ كَمَا يُعَلِّمُهُمُ السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ»

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never prayed four or two units of prayer without me hearing him say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Hellfire, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of living and dying."

مَا صَلَّى نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعًا أَوِ اثْنَتَيْنِ إِلَّا سَمِعْتُهُ يَدْعُو «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَسُوءِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ»

The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us these words as he used to teach us the Book (Qur'an): "O Allah! seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to (senile) geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the affliction of the world and from the punishment in the Hereafter." كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ كَمَا تُعَلَّمُ الْكِتَابَةُ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

"The Prophet [SAW] used to say in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa fitnatid-dajjali, wa 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, cowardice, miserliness, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.)" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

When one of you finishes the last tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things: the punishment in Hell, the punishment in the grave, the trail of life and death, and the evil of Antichrist. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 983)
