The Jews came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that a man and a woman from amongst them had committed illegal sexual intercourse. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "What do you find in the Torah (old Testament) about the legal punishment of Ar-Rajm (stoning)?" They replied, (But) we announce their crime and lash them." ʿAbdullah bin Salam said, "You are telling a lie; Torah contains the order of Rajm." They brought and opened the Torah and one of them solaced his hand on the Verse of Rajm and read the verses preceding and following it. ʿAbdullah bin Salam said to him, "Lift your hand." When he lifted his hand, the Verse of Rajm was written there. They said, "Muhammad has told the truth; the Torah has the Verse of Rajm. The Prophet ﷺ then gave the order that both of them should be stoned to death. (ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, "I saw the man leaning over the woman to shelter her from the stones."

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرُوا لَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةً زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ فِي شَأْنِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالُوا نَفْضَحُهُمْ وَيُجْلَدُونَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَنَشَرُوهَا فَوَضَعَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَرَأَ مَا قَبْلَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالُوا صَدَقَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ يَجْنَأُ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

The Jews brought to the Prophet ﷺ a man and a woman from among them who had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, "How do you usually punish the one amongst you who has committed illegal sexual intercourse?" They replied, "We blacken their faces with coal and beat them," He said, "Don't you find the order of Ar-Rajm (i.e. stoning to death) in the Torah?" They replied, "We do not find anything in it." ʿAbdullah bin Salam (after hearing this conversation) said to them. "You have told a lie! Bring here the Torah and recite it if you are truthful." (So the Jews brought the Torah). And the religious teacher who was teaching it to them, put his hand over the Verse of Ar- Rajm and started reading what was written above and below the place hidden with his hand, but he did not read the Verse of Ar-Rajm. ʿAbdullah bin Salam removed his (i.e. the teacher's) hand from the Verse of Ar-Rajm and said, "What is this?" So when the Jews saw that Verse, they said, "This is the Verse of Ar-Rajm." So the Prophet ﷺ ordered the two adulterers to be stoned to death, and they were stoned to death near the place where biers used to be placed near the Mosque. I saw her companion (i.e. the adulterer) bowing over her so as to protect her from the stones.

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ بِمَنْ زَنَى مِنْكُمْ قَالُوا نُحَمِّمُهُمَا وَنَضْرِبُهُمَا فَقَالَ لاَ تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ الرَّجْمَ فَقَالُوا لاَ نَجِدُ فِيهَا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ كَذَبْتُمْ {فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ} فَوَضَعَ مِدْرَاسُهَا الَّذِي يُدَرِّسُهَا مِنْهُمْ كَفَّهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَطَفِقَ يَقْرَأُ مَا دُونَ يَدِهِ وَمَا وَرَاءَهَا وَلاَ يَقْرَأُ آيَةَ الرَّجْمِ فَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ عَنْ آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذِهِ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا ذَلِكَ قَالُوا هِيَ آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا فَرُجِمَا قَرِيبًا مِنْ حَيْثُ مَوْضِعُ الْجَنَائِزِ عِنْدَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَهَا يَجْنَأُ عَلَيْهَا يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

The jews came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned to him that a man and a lady among them had committed illegal sexual intercourse. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "What do you find in the Torah regarding the Rajam?" They replied, "We only disgrace and flog them with stripes." ʿAbdullah bin Salam said to them, 'You have told a lie the penalty of Rajam is in the Torah.' They brought the Torah and opened it. One of them put his hand over the verse of the Rajam and read what was before and after it. ʿAbdullah bin Salam said to him, "Lift up your hand." Where he lifted it there appeared the verse of the Rajam. So they said, "O Muhammad! He has said the truth, the verse of the Rajam is in it (Torah)." Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the two persons (guilty of illegal sexual intercourse) be stoned to death, and so they were stoned, and I saw the man bending over the woman so as to protect her from the stones.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرُوا لَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةً زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ فِي شَأْنِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالُوا نَفْضَحُهُمْ وَيُجْلَدُونَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَنَشَرُوهَا فَوَضَعَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَرَأَ مَا قَبْلَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ قَالُوا صَدَقَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ يَحْنِي عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

A Jew and Jewess were brought to the Prophet ﷺ on a charge of committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ asked the Jews, "What do you (usually) do with them?" They said, "We blacken their faces and disgrace them." He said, "Bring here the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful." They (fetched it and) came and asked a one-eyed man to recite. He went on reciting till he reached a portion on which he put his hand. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Lift up your hand!" He lifted his hand up and behold, there appeared the verse of Ar-Rajm (stoning of the adulterers to death). Then he said, "O Muhammad! They should be stoned to death but we conceal this Divine Law among ourselves." Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered that the two sinners be stoned to death and, and they were stoned to death, and I saw the man protecting the woman from the stones. (See Hadith No. 809, Vol. 8)

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ وَامْرَأَةٍ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لِلْيَهُودِ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ بِهِمَا قَالُوا نُسَخِّمُ وُجُوهَهُمَا وَنُخْزِيهِمَا قَالَ {فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ} فَجَاءُوا فَقَالُوا لِرَجُلٍ مِمَّنْ يَرْضَوْنَ يَا أَعْوَرُ اقْرَأْ فَقَرَأَ حَتَّى انْتَهَى عَلَى مَوْضِعٍ مِنْهَا فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا فِيهِ آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ تَلُوحُ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ عَلَيْهِمَا الرَّجْمَ وَلَكِنَّا نُكَاتِمُهُ بَيْنَنَا فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا فَرُجِمَا فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُجَانِئُ عَلَيْهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

that a Jew and a Jewess were brought to Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ) who had committed adultery. Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ) came to the Jews and said: What do you find in Torah for one who commits adultery? They said: We darken their faces and make them ride on the donkey with their faces turned to the opposite direction (and their backs touching each other), and then they are taken round (the city). He said: Bring Torah if you are truthful. They brought it and recited it until when they came to the verse pertaining to stoning, the person who was reading placed his hand on the verse pertaining to stoning, and read (only that which was) between his hands and what was subsequent to that. Abdullah b. Salim who was at that time with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Command him (the reciter) to lift his hand. He lifted it and there was, underneath that, the verse pertaining to stoning. Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounced judgment about both of them and they were stoned. Abdullah b. 'Umar said: I was one of those who stoned them, and I saw him (the Jew) protecting her (the Jewess) with his body.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِيَهُودِيٍّ وَيَهُودِيَّةٍ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَانْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى جَاءَ يَهُودَ فَقَالَ: «مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ عَلَى مَنْ زَنَى؟» قَالُوا: نُسَوِّدُ وُجُوهَهُمَا وَنُحَمِّلُهُمَا وَنُخَالِفُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِهِمَا وَيُطَافُ بِهِمَا قَالَ: «فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ۔» فَجَاءُوا بِهَا فَقَرَءُوهَا حَتَّى إِذَا مَرُّوا بِآيَةِ الرَّجْمِ وَضَعَ الْفَتَى الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ وَقَرَأَ مَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا وَرَاءَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ وَهْوَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مُرْهُ فَلْيَرْفَعْ يَدَهُ۔ فَرَفَعَهَا، فَإِذَا تَحْتَهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا۔ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ كُنْتُ فِيمَنْ رَجَمَهُمَا فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَقِيهَا مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ بِنَفْسِهِ

some jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned to him that a man and a women of their number had committed fornication. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them: What do you find in the Torah about stoning? They replied: We disgrace them and they should be flogged. ‘Abd Allah b. Salam said: You lie; it contains (instruction for) stoning. So they brought the Torah and spread it out, and one of them put his hand over the verse of stoning and read what preceded it and what followed it. ‘Abd Allah b. Salam said to him: Lift your hand. When he did so, the verse of stoning was seen to be in it. They then said: He has spoken the truth, Muhammad, the verse of stoning is in it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then gave command regarding them, and they were stoned to death. ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar said: I saw the man leaning on the woman protecting her from the stones.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَذَكَرُوا لَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةً زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ فِي شَأْنِ الزِّنَا فَقَالُوا نَفْضَحُهُمْ وَيُجْلَدُونَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَنَشَرُوهَا فَجَعَلَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ مَا قَبْلَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَهَا فَإِذَا فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالُوا صَدَقَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ يَحْنِي عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

[AI] "Indeed, the Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a man and a woman from among them who had committed adultery. The Messenger said, 'What should be done with those who have committed adultery among you?' They replied, 'We do not find anything mentioned about it in our scripture.' Abdullah bin Salam said, 'You have lied regarding stoning in the Torah. Bring the Torah and recite it if you are truthful.' So they brought the Torah, and he placed his hand on the verse of stoning and asked, 'What is this?' When they saw that, they said, 'It is the verse of stoning.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that they be stoned near the site where funeral processions are placed near the mosque.' Abdullah said, 'I saw the man shielding the woman with his body from the stones.'"

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ «كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ بِمَنْ زَنَى مِنْكُمْ؟» قَالُوا لَا نَجِدُ فِيهَا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ كَذَبْتُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ الرَّجْمُ فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ فَجَاءُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَوَضَعَ مِدْرَاسُهَا الَّذِي يَدْرُسُهَا مِنْهُمْ كَفَّهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالَ «مَا هَذِهِ؟» فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا ذَلِكَ قَالُوا هِيَ آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا قَرِيبًا مِنْ حَيْثُ تُوضَعُ الْجَنَائِزُ عِنْدَ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَهَا يَجْنَأُ عَلَيْهَا يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

[AI] That the Jews brought to the Prophet ﷺ a man and woman from among them who committed adultery. He said, "What do you find in your book?" They said, "We erase their faces and humiliate them." He said, "You have lied, for indeed in it is stoning, so bring the Torah and recite it if you are truthful." So they brought the Torah and they brought a reader for them, who was blind named Ibn Suwariya. He started reciting until he reached a certain point, then he placed his hand on it, and he was told, "Lift your hand." So he lifted his hand, and there it was written, and he recited. They said, "O Muhammad, indeed in it is stoning, but we used to keep it hidden among ourselves." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that they be stoned. He said, "Indeed, I saw him accommodating her to be hit with the stones."

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ أَتَوْا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ وَامْرَأَةٍ مِنْهُمْ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي كِتَابِكُمْ؟ فَقَالُوا نُسَخِّمُ وُجُوهَهُمَا وَيُخْزَيَانِ فَقَالَ كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ فَجَاءُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ وَجَاءُوا بِقَارِئٍ لَهُمْ أَعْوَرَ يُقَالُ لَهُ ابْنُ صُورِيَا فَقَرَأَ حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَهَى إِلَى مَوْضِعٍ مِنْهَا وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلُوحُفَقَالَ أَوْ قَالُوا يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا نَتَكَاتَمُهُ بَيْنَنَا فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا قَالَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يُجَانِئُ عَلَيْهَا يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ بِنَفْسِهِ

Malik related to me from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned to him that a man and woman from among them had committed adultery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, 'What do you find in the Torah about stoning?' They said, 'We make their wrong action known and flog them.' Abdullah ibn Salam said, 'You have lied! It has stoning for it, so bring the Torah.' They spread it out and one of them placed his hand over the ayat of stoning. Then he read what was before it and what was after it. Abdullah ibn Salam told him to lift his hand. He lifted his hand and there was the ayat of stoning. They said, 'He has spoken the truth, Muhammad. The ayat of stoning is in it.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the order and they were stoned . " Abdullah ibn Umar added, "I saw the man leaning over the woman to protect her from the stones." Malik commented, "By leaning he meant throwing himself over her so that the stones fell on him."

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرُوا لَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةً زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ فِي شَأْنِ الرَّجْمِ؟ » فَقَالُوا نَفْضَحُهُمْ وَيُجْلَدُونَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا لَآيَةَ الرَّجْمِ فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَنَشَرُوهَا فَوَضَعَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَرَأَ مَا قَبْلَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالُوا صَدَقَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ فِيهَا آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا ﷺ فَرُجِمَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ يَجْنِئُ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ يَقِيهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

some jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned to him that a man and a women of their number had committed fornication. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them: What do you find in the Torah about stoning? They replied: We disgrace them and they should be flogged. ‘Abd Allah b. Salam said: You lie; it contains (instruction for) stoning. So they brought the Torah and spread it out, and one of them put his hand over the verse of stoning and read what preceded it and what followed it. ‘Abd Allah b. Salam said to him: Lift your hand. When he did so, the verse of stoning was seen to be in it. They then said: He has spoken the truth, Muhammad, the verse of stoning is in it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then gave command regarding them, and they were stoned to death. ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar said: I saw the man leaning on the woman protecting her from the stones. [AI] The Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ with a man and a woman from among them who had committed adultery. He said to them, "How do you deal with someone who has committed adultery among you?" They replied, "We strike them." The Prophet ﷺ said, "And what do you find in the Torah?" They said, "We do not find anything in it regarding this matter." Abdullah ibn Salam said to them, "You have lied; in the Torah, there is stoning. Bring the Torah and recite it if you are truthful." So the Torah was brought, and the part that he had studied from them was placed on his hand while he covered the verse about stoning. He then asked, "What is this?" When they saw that, they said, "It is stoning." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that they be stoned where the graves were. Abdullah said, "I saw her companion leaning over her to protect her from the stones."

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءُوا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ «كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ بِمَنْ زَنَى مِنْكُمْ؟» فَقَالُوا نَضْرِبُهُمَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «فَمَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ؟» قَالُوا مَا نَجِدُ فِيهَا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ كَذَبْتُمْ؛ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ الرَّجْمُ فَائْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاقْرَؤُوا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ فَأُتِيَ بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَوَضَعَ مِدْرَاسُهَا الَّذِي دَرَسَهَا مِنْهُمْ كَفَّهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَطَفِقَ يَقْرَأَ مَا دُونَ يَدِهِ وَمَا وَرَاءَهَا وَلَا يَقْرَأُ آيَةَ الرَّجْمِ فَنَتَرَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذِهِ؟ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا ذَلِكَ قَالُوا هِيَ الرَّجْمُ فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَرُجِمَا حَيْثُ يُوجَدُ الْجِنَائِزُ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَهَا يَحْنُو عَلَيْهَا لِيَقِيَهَا الْحِجَارَةَ

[AI] That the Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ with a man and a woman from among themselves who had committed adultery. The Prophet asked them, "What does your book say about this?" They replied, "We erase their faces and disgrace them." The Prophet said, "You have lied. Indeed, stoning is mentioned in it." So, they brought the Torah and a blind man who was a reader recited it. When he reached a certain part, he placed his hand on it. He was told, "Raise your hand," and he raised it, and there it was mentioned. They said, "O Muhammad, it is indeed mentioned in it, but we used to conceal it among ourselves." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered for them in this way.

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ أَتَوَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ وَامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ زَنَيَا فَقَالَ «مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي كِتَابِكُمْ» قَالُوا نُسَخِّمُ وُجُوهَهُمَا وَيُخْزَيَانِ قَالَ «كَذَبْتُمْ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ» فَائْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ فَجَاءُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ وَجَاءُوا بِقَارِئٍ لَهُمْ أَعْوَرَ فَقَرَأَ حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَهَى إِلَى مَوْضِعٍ مِنْهَا وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ فَرَفَعَ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلُوحُ فَقَالُوا يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ فِيهَا الرَّجْمَ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا نَتَكَاتَمُهُ بَيْنَنَا فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَذَا

The Jews brought to the Prophet ﷺ a man and a woman from among them who had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, "How do you usually punish the one amongst you who has committed illegal sexual intercourse?" They replied, "We blacken their faces with coal and beat them," He said, "Don't you find the order of Ar-Rajm (i.e. stoning to death) in the Torah?" They replied, "We do not find anything in it." ʿAbdullah bin Salam (after hearing this conversation) said to them. "You have told a lie! Bring here the Torah and recite it if you are truthful." (So the Jews brought the Torah). And the religious teacher who was teaching it to them, put his hand over the Verse of Ar- Rajm and started reading what was written above and below the place hidden with his hand, but he did not read the Verse of Ar-Rajm. ʿAbdullah bin Salam removed his (i.e. the teacher's) hand from the Verse of Ar-Rajm and said, "What is this?" So when the Jews saw that Verse, they said, "This is the Verse of Ar-Rajm." So the Prophet ﷺ ordered the two adulterers to be stoned to death, and they were stoned to death near the place where biers used to be placed near the Mosque. I saw her companion (i.e. the adulterer) bowing over her so as to protect her from the stones. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4556)

" إنَّ الْيَهُودَ جَاءوا النَّبىَّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ وامرأة قَد زنيا، فَقَالَ لَهُم النَّبِىُّ ﷺ كيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ بِمَنْ زَنَا مِنْكُمْ؟ قَالُوا: نَضْرِبُهُمَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ : فَمَا تَجِدُونَ فِى التَّوْرَاة؟ قَالُوا: لاَ نجد فِيهَا شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الله بْنُ سَلاَمٍ: كَذَبْتمْ، فِى التَّوْرَاةِ الرَّجْمُ فَأتُوا بِالتَّورَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادقِينَ، فَأتُوا بِالتَّوْراةِ فَوضَع مدْراسُهَا (* * * *) الَّذى يَدْرسُهَا كَفَّهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْم، فَطَفِقَ يَقْرَأُ مَا دُونَ يَدِهِ وَمَا وَرَاءهَا وَلاَ يَقْرَأُ آيَةَ الرَّجم، فَنَزَعَ عَبْدُ الله بْنُ سَلاَمٍ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَة الرَّجْمِ فَقَالَ: مَا هَذِهِ؟ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا ذَلِكَ قَالوُا: هِى آيَةُ الرَّجْم، فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَرُجِمَا حَيْثَ تُوضَعُ الْجَنَائِزُ ".
