(A man broke his fast intentionally) during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to emancipate a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor men. He said: I cannot provide. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2392)

[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that he had committed adultery with his wife during Ramadan. The Prophet asked him, "Do you have a slave to free (as expiation)?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet then asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man again replied, "No." The Prophet then said, "Feed sixty poor people." The man replied, "I cannot find that many." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him a date and instructed him to give it in charity. The man mentioned his need to the Prophet, who then ordered him to take the date for himself.

[Machine] A man broke his fast during the month of Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to either free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty needy people. The man said that he could not find any means to do so, so he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a basket of dates. The Messenger told him to give it as charity. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I do not find anyone more in need of it than myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled until his molars were visible, then he said, "Eat it."

'Ashura' (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the prelslamic period of ignorance. The Prophet ﷺ also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.

During the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance the Quraish used to observe fasting on the day of 'Ashura', and the Prophet ﷺ himself used to observe fasting on it too. But when he came to Medina, he fasted on that day and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. When (the order of compulsory fasting in ) Ramadan was revealed, fasting in Ramadan became an obligation, and fasting on 'Ashura' was given up, and who ever wished to fast (on it) did so, and whoever did not wish to fast on it, did not fast.

Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ too, used to fast on that day. When he came to Medina, he fasted on that day and ordered others to fast, too. malik:18-36Yaḥyá > Mālik > Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "The day of Ashura was a day the Quraysh used to fast in the jahiliyya, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used also to fast it during the jahiliyya. Then when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madina he fasted it and ordered that it be fasted. Then Ramadan was made obligatory, and that became the fard instead of Ashura, but whoever wanted to, fasted it, and whoever did not want to, did not fast it."

[Machine] The day of Ashura used to be observed as a fast by the Quraysh in the pre-Islamic era, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also used to fast on this day during that time. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he continued to fast on this day and ordered others to also observe the fast. However, when the obligatory fast of Ramadan was established, it became the main priority, and the fast of Ashura was left as optional. So, whoever wishes to fast on this day may do so, and whoever wishes to leave it may do so.

Institutionalization of Tarawih by Umar ᴿᴬ

bukhari:2010Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī > Kharajt

I went out in the company of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb one night in Ramaḍān to the mosque and found the people praying in different groups. A man praying alone or a man praying with a little group behind him. So, ʿUmar said: In my opinion, it would better to collect them under the leadership of one reciter. So, he made up his mind to congregate them behind Ubay b. Kaʿb. Then on another night, I went again in his company and the people were praying behind their reciter. On that, ʿUmar remarked: What an excellent bidʿah (innovation) this is; but the prayer which they do not perform and sleep at its time is better than the one they are offering. ˹What˺ he meant is the prayer in the last part of the night, (i.e. Tahajjud) ˹In those days˺ people used to pray in the early part of the night.

Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-Zubayr that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari said, "I went out with Umar ibn alKhattab in Ramadan to the mosque and the people there were spread out in groups. Some men were praying by themselves, whilst others were praying in small groups. Umar said, 'By Allah! It would be better in my opinion if these people gathered behind one reciter.' So he gathered them behind Ubayy ibn Kab. Then I went out with him another night and the people were praying behind their Qur'an reciter. Umar said, 'How excellent this new way is, but what you miss while you are asleep is better than what you watch in prayer.' He meant the end of the night, and people used to watch the beginning of the night in prayer."

bukhari:731ʿAbd al-Aʿlá b. Ḥammād > Wuhayb > Mūsá b. ʿUqbah > Sālim Abū al-Naḍr > Busr b. Saʿīd > Zayd b. Thābit

Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a small room in the month of Ramadan (Saʿid said, "I think that Zaid bin Thabit said that it was made of a mat") and he prayed there for a few nights, and so some of his companions prayed behind him. When he came to know about it, he kept on sitting. In the morning, he went out to them and said, "I have seen and understood what you did. You should pray in your houses, for the best prayer of a person is that which he prays in his house except the compulsory prayers."

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a room made of bricks during Ramadan and prayed in it during the nights. Some of his companions prayed with him. When he came to know about them, he made a gesture to sit and said, "I have come to know about what I saw from your actions. O people, pray in your houses, for the best prayer of a person is in his house except for the obligatory prayers."
