Dua of Qaylah bt. Makhramah al-Anbariyyah

قَيْلَةُ بِنْتُ مَخْرَمَةَ الْعَنْبَرِيَّةُ

tabarani:21564Muʿādh b. al-Muthanná > ʿAbdullāh b. Sawwār al-ʿAnbarī > ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿImrān al-Aṣbahānī > Abū Ḥafṣ ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > ʿAbdullāh b. Sawwār al-ʿAnbarī > ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥassān al-ʿAnbarī > Ṣafīyah bt. ʿUlaybah > Duḥaybah bt. ʿUlaybah

Qaylah bint Makhramah, when she had taken her place in bed after the late evening prayer, would say: In the name of Allah, and upon Allah I rely. I have laid my side down for my Lord, and I ask His forgiveness for my sin. She would say this repeatedly, then she would say: I seek refuge in Allah and in His perfect words, which neither a righteous person nor a wicked person can overstep, from the evil of what descends from the heaven and what ascends into it, from the evil of what descends into the earth and the evil of what comes out from it, from the evil of the trials of the day and the evil of those that come by night, except one that comes with good. I believe in Allah and hold fast to Him. Praise be to Allah, to whose power every thing has submitted; praise be to Allah, before whose might every thing has humbled itself; praise be to Allah, before whose greatness every thing has lowered itself; and praise be to Allah, before whose dominion every thing has bowed in humility. O Allah, I ask You by the bonds of might from Your Throne, by the utmost mercy from Your Book, by Your highest majesty, by Your greatest Name, and by Your perfect words, which neither a righteous person nor a wicked person can overstep, that You look upon us with a merciful look, leaving no sin of ours except that You forgive it, no poverty except that You mend it, no enemy except that You destroy him, no unclothed person except that You clothe him, no debt except that You settle it, and no matter in which there is benefit for us in this world and the Hereafter except that You grant it to us, O Most Merciful of the merciful. I believe in Allah and hold fast to Him.

Then she would say: Glory be to Allah thirty-three times, Allah is greater thirty-three times, and praise be to Allah thirty-four times. Then she would say: O my daughter, this is the chief concluding practice: the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him seeking a servant from him, and he said: "Shall I not direct you to something better than a servant?" She said, "Yes." So he instructed her to say these hundred at the time of lying down after the late evening prayer.

[AI] A Jewish man and a scholar came to the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Indeed, you engage in shirk (associating partners with Allah) and you curse. You say 'No, by the Kaaba' and you say 'What Allah wills and you will'. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to say, 'No, by the Lord of the Kaaba' and to say 'What Allah wills and then you will'."

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and prayed with him some prayers. When he finished the prayer, I stood up and he looked at me. There was a tall woman, and he said, "If her son fights from behind a barrier." She said, "By Allah, if that is the case, O Messenger of Allah, but he died." She said, "Write a book for me." He said, "And I have three daughters with me." So he wrote from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Qayla and the three women, "They should not be wronged or forced into marriage, and every believer or Muslim has a guardian and supporter, so they should not be treated badly."

[AI] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Marwah after performing Umrah, so I sat with him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who buys and sells. Perhaps I intend to sell an item and I make a profit that is more than what I wanted, then I decrease it until I sell it for the price I originally desired. And when I intend to buy an item, I offer less than what I intend to take, then I increase it until I acquire it for the price I desired." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not do that, O Qaylah! When you intend to sell an item, sell it for the price you desire, either give or refrain. And when you intend to buy an item, offer the price you desire, either accept or abstain."

[AI] An inkwell came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, you are indeed a righteous people, except that you associate partners with Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "And what is that?" The inkwell replied, "You say when you pledge and mention the Kaaba, 'By the Lord of the Kaaba'." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then paused for a while and said, "Whoever swears an oath, let him swear by the Lord of the Kaaba." The inkwell continued, "O Muhammad, you are indeed a righteous people, except that you make rivals for Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Glory be to Allah, and what is that?" The inkwell replied, "You say to a man, 'What Allah wills and what you will.' " The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then paused again and said, "Indeed, he has said, 'So whoever says, 'What Allah wills, then let him create a separation between them (i.e., his will and the will of the person).'
