[Machine] "Abdullah preferred Umar over people in four things: His mention of the prisoners on the day of Badr, where he ordered their execution, and Allah revealed, 'If it had not been for a decree from Allah that had already gone forth, an awful punishment would have come upon you' (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:68). And his mention of hijab, when Zainab said to him, 'Indeed, you are jealous of us, and the revelation comes to you in our houses,' so Allah revealed, 'And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition' (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:53). And the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ, 'O Allah, support Islam with Umar ibn Al-Khattab.' And his opinion about Abu Bakr, as he was the first among the people to give him the pledge of allegiance."

[Machine] The best of people are three: the companion of Moses who said, “O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy.” He said, “What did you see from his strength?” She said, “He drew near to the well and rolled away the boulder that no one else could move.” He said, “What did you see from his trustworthiness?” She said, “I was walking in front of him and he made me walk behind him, and the companion of Joseph when he said, ‘Appoint me over the storehouses. Indeed, I am a trustworthy guardian,’ and Abu Bakr when he appointed Umar as his successor."
[Machine] Abdullah said, "Indeed, I consider Umar to be a rightful leader between my eyes."
[Machine] "That there is an angel between his eyes guiding him."

[Machine] "Indeed, Umar disliked praying after Asr prayer, and I dislike what Umar disliked."
[Machine] We gathered the companions of Muhammad and we ordered our best one above.
[Machine] "About our best, the one above us, we pledged allegiance to him, so pledge allegiance to the Commander of the Believers, Uthman bin Affan."
[Machine] "Abdullah, what pleases me is that I shot Uthman with an arrow that missed him. I intended to kill him, and it is as if I have taken away my share of gold."
[Machine] Abdullah came to announce the death of Umar and the appointment of Uthman. Abdullah said, "By Allah, we have not deviated from our leaders above us."
[Machine] When Uthman was appointed, Abdullah bin Masud said, "He has entrusted us to someone better than himself, yet we have not received [what we had hoped for]."
[Machine] Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said, "We have been commanded to do good for as long as we exist, and not to demand."
[Machine] To mourn Umar, sadness struck him once or twice, then he said: "Umar ibn al-Khattab was a strong fortress for Islam, he would enter it and not leave it. The fortress was destroyed, he was mourned, and then he said: "Uthman ibn Affan was chosen as his successor, and we have not obtained anything better than it."
[Machine] "To withdraw is to take away what someone possesses, and it is upon you to seek knowledge, for indeed one of you does not know when he may become poor and in need of what he has. And it is upon you to seek knowledge, and beware of pretension and superficiality, and it is upon you to adhere to the ancient wisdom, for indeed a people will come who recite the Book of Allah, but they will throw it behind their backs."
[Machine] "O people, learn, for indeed one of you does not know when death will approach him." Then a man came to him and said, "O Abu 'Abdul Rahman, what do you say about a person who recites the Qur'an in a reversed manner?" He said, "That is a reflection of a corrupted heart." Then the man said, "And what if I bring a beautifully adorned and decorated Qur'an?" Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) said, "Indeed, the best thing that a Qur'an is adorned with is reciting it with sincerity."
[Machine] He used to say, "O Allah, if You have written me among the people of misery, then test me, and if You have written me among the people of happiness, then establish me."
[Machine] Ibn Mas`ud used to often exemplify with poetic verses that reflected the realities of the Arabs.
[Machine] I heard Abdullah say, "There is no statement I can speak to someone in power that will shield me from two lashes of the whip, except for the statement itself."
[Machine] Ibn Mas'ud said, "Indeed, a person may speak with a hadith that is heard by someone whose intellect does not comprehend the meaning of the hadith, and as a result, it becomes a trial for them."
[Machine] There were two villages, one righteous and the other unjust. A man from the unjust village came out, intending to go to the righteous village, but death came to him wherever Allah willed. The angel and the devil disputed over him. The devil said, "By Allah, he never disobeyed me." The angel said, "Indeed, he has left with the intention of repentance." It was settled between them that they would look at which village was closer. They found that he was closer to the righteous village by a span, so he was forgiven. Ma'mar said, "I heard someone say, 'Allah has brought him close to the righteous village.'"
[Machine] "Indeed, what is prohibited of what is permissible is like what is permissible of what is prohibited."
[Machine] I heard Abdullah bin Mas'ood saying, "Indeed, the prohibited (things) are the same as the permissible (things) in their prohibition."
[Machine] "I do not leave behind anything that I love more than the camels I tend to."
[Machine] "Indeed, Allah is inquiring about every shepherd regarding what they have taken care of, whether they have fulfilled the command of Allah in regard to them or whether they have neglected it. To the extent that a man will be asked about his family."
[Machine] "That it would be apparent to us, even if you were to send someone to deceive us, and Abdullah said, 'We will not be deceived. By Allah, there will come a time when if they were to search for a cup of water, they would not find it. All water will return to its source, and the Muslims will be in Syria.'"
[Machine] The Euphrates River extended during the time of Abdullah, and the people disliked that. Abdullah said, "Do not dislike it, for there will soon come a time when people will search for a cup of water and will not find it, as all water will return to its source, and the remainder of the water will be with the believers in Sham."
[Machine] "If the year is thirty-five and there is a great event, if they perish it's by my will, and if they survive, perhaps. And if the year is seventy, you will see what you deny."
[Machine] "As if I, with the Turks, have come to you on saddled horses, tied to the banks of the Euphrates."
[Machine] "That a man loves his brother, he does not love him except for the sake of Allah and in Him."
[Machine] "Tama'im, ruqyah, and talismans are forms of shirk or part of shirk."
[Machine] He saw on the neck of a woman from his family an amulet, so he extended it forcefully until he cut off the amulet, and he said, "Indeed, the family of Abdullah are wealthy and do not need to associate partners with Allah." Then he said, "Verily, turning to omens, wearing amulets, and seeking healing through charms is a form of shirk (associating partners with Allah)." So a woman said, "Indeed, one of us complains of a headache and she seeks treatment by wearing amulets. When she wears them, she believes that they will benefit her." Abdullah said, "Verily, Shaytan (the devil) comes to one of you and causes fear in her head. When she seeks treatment through wearing amulets, he retreats. And if she does not seek treatment through wearing amulets, he continues to bother her. If only one of you would supplicate with water and sprinkle it on her head and face, then say: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' And then recite, 'Say: He is Allah, the One. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.' That would benefit her if Allah wills."
[Machine] "Indeed, a woman is from the beautiful-eyed hoor (fair virgins of Paradise), so that her shin bone can be seen through her flesh and bones, and from beneath seventy layers of clothing, just as red drink can be seen in a white glass jar."
[Machine] The sudden death is a relief for the believer and grief for the disbeliever.
[Machine] "The believer, indeed, exudes himself with a runny discharge, while the disbeliever exudes himself with difficulty, just as the breath of a donkey is exuded."
[Machine] "O Allah, Lord of the heavens and whatever they shade, Lord of the devils and whatever they misguide, Lord of the winds and whatever they scatter. I ask You for its good and the good within it, and seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil within it."
ʿAbdullāh used to fast very little. This ˹concern˺ was mentioned to him so he said: When I have fasted, I become weak reading, and reciting the Qurʾān is more beloved to me.
that he was almost unable to fast and said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting. So when he fasted he fasted three ˹days˺ of the month.
ʿAbdullāh used to fast very little. We said to him that you do not fast much. He said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting.
[Machine] "Prayer is dearer to me than fasting, and he did not used to pray the Duha prayer."
ʿAbdullāh used to fast very little. We said to him that you do not fast much. He said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting. (Using translation from Ṭabarānī 8870)
[Machine] I heard Al-Sha'bi say, "Abdullah ibn Mas'ood used to not pray the Duha prayer and he used to pray the prayer between Dhuhr and Asr with a long portion of the night."
that he was almost unable to fast and said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting. So when he fasted he fasted three ˹days˺ of the month. (Using translation from Ṭabarānī 8869)
[Machine] I asked Ibn Mas'ud about a year, and he said, "I have never seen him fasting on any day except in Ramadan. He used to drink intense wine in a green jug."
[Machine] I used to differ with Ibn Mas'ood regarding the Sunnah. I never saw him performing the Duha prayer, and I never saw him fasting voluntarily except for the day of Ashura.
[Machine] We were at Abdullah's place when a drink was brought. He said, "Serve it to the people." They said, "We are fasting." He said, "But I am not fasting." So, he drank and then recited, "They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned."
كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَأُتِيَ بِشَرَابٍ فَقَالَ «نَاوِلْهُ الْقَوْمَ» فَقَالُوا نَحْنُ صِيَامٌ فَقَالَ «لَكِنِّي لَسْتُ صَائِمًا» فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلُّبُ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالْأَبْصَارُ}
[Machine] I heard Abdullah bin Mas'ud saying, "The righte ous will depart in groups and those who have doubts will remain, those who do not recognize goodness and do not denounce evil."
[Machine] "Allah divided the good and made it nine-tenths in Sham (Syria) and the remainder in the rest of the earth. And He divided the evil and made it ten-tenths, and made a portion of it in Sham (Syria) and the remainder in the rest of the earth."
