ʿAbdullāh used to fast very little. This ˹concern˺ was mentioned to him so he said: When I have fasted, I become weak reading, and reciting the Qurʾān is more beloved to me.

كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يُقِلُّ الصَّوْمَ فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي إِذَا صُمْتُ ضَعُفْتُ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ وَتِلَاوَةُ الْقُرْآنِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ»

that he was almost unable to fast and said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting. So when he fasted he fasted three ˹days˺ of the month.

عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ وَالصَّلَاةُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الصِّيَامِ» فَإِنْ صَامَ صَامَ ثَلَاثًا مِنَ الشَّهْرِ

ʿAbdullāh used to fast very little. We said to him that you do not fast much. He said: When I have fasted, I become weak in Ṣalāh, and Ṣalāh is more beloved to me than fasting. (Using translation from Ṭabarānī 8870)

"عَنِ عَبْد الرَّحْمَن بْنِ يَزِيد أَن عَبْدَ اللهِ بْن مَسْعُودٍ كَان يُقِلُّ الصَوم فَقيلَ له، فقال: إنى إِذَا صُمْتُ ضَعُفْتُ عَنْ الصَّلاةِ، وَالصَّدَقَة أحَبُّ إِلَى مِنْ الصَّوْمِ".

"عَن أَبِى وَائِل قَالَ: كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يُقل الصَّوْمَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: فَقَالَ: إِنِّى إِذَا صُمْتُ ضَعُفتُ عَنْ قِرَاءةِ القُرآنِ، وَقَراءة القُرآن أَحَبُّ إِلى مِنْ الصَّومِ".
