Then he went with us to Bishr bin 'Asim and said to him, "Abu Al-A'la wants you to tell us the story." He said, "We were told by 'Uqbah bin Malik who said, Abu Al-Nadr Al-Laythi said, Bahz, who was from his tribe, sent a spy mission. It raided a group of people, and a man from the group stood out. A man from the spy mission followed him, brandishing his sword. The man from the group said, 'I am a Muslim,' but the spy did not pay attention to what he said and struck him, killing him. The news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said something harsh about it. The killer was present, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was giving a sermon when the killer said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the one who killed did not say the words except as a means to protect himself from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and looked at the people in front of him, then went back to his sermon. Then the killer said again, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the one who killed did not say the words except as a means to protect himself from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and looked at the people in front of him, then went back to his sermon. But he couldn't wait and said for the third time, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the one who killed did not say the words except as a means to protect himself from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached him, his anger showing on his face, and said to him, 'Verily, Allah has forbidden anyone who kills a believer three times.'"

He took us until we reached Nasr ibn Aasim Al-Laythi. He said, "Relay these two hadiths to me." Nasr said, "Uqbah ibn Malik narrated to me, and he was from our tribe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition. They became envious of a certain group [of people], so a man from that group separated himself. A man from the military expedition followed him with a drawn sword. The man who separated said, 'I am a Muslim!' but he did not pay attention to his plea and struck and killed him. The news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he expressed strong disapproval. The murderer was informed [of the Prophet's disapproval]. While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon, the killer said, 'By Allah, the one who spoke did not say anything except seeking protection from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and from those who were near him among the people, and he continued his sermon. Then another person said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the one who spoke did not say anything except seeking protection from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and from those who were near him among the people, and he continued his sermon. He could not bear it anymore, so a third person said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, the one who spoke did not say anything except seeking protection from being killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached him, and it was apparent on his face that he was displeased. Then he said, 'Verily, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has refused to accept from me whoever kills a believer.' He repeated this statement three times."

So he left with us until he brought us to Bishr ibn 'Asim al-Laythi, and he said, "Narrate your narrations to him." Bishr said: "Narrated to us 'Uqbah ibn Malik, and he was from his kindred." He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition, and it attacked a people. A man from the people separated, and a man from the people of the expedition followed him with a drawn sword. The strange man from the people said: 'I am a Muslim!' But he did not pay attention to what was said, so he struck him and killed him. The news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said something severe in it. Then the killer interjected and said: "'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he did not say except to seek refuge from being killed.' He resumed his speech, but he could not bear it and said it a third time. "'And, by Allah, he did not say except to seek refuge from being killed.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards him, and the severity was evident in his face, then he said: 'Indeed, Allah has forbidden me from killing a believer.'" He (Bishr) said it three times.
