٢٦۔ سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاء ص ٤

The Poets (Meccan)

quran:26:151

And do not obey the order of the transgressors,  

and do not obey the command of the prodigal,
القرآن:٢٦:١٥١

وَلَا تُطِيعُوا أَمْرَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ  

{ولا تطيعوا أمر المسرفين}.
quran:26:152

Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."  

who cause corruption in the earth, through acts of disobedience, and act righteously’, by being obedient to God.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٢

الَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ  

{الذين يفسدون في الأرض} بالمعاصي {ولا يصلحون} بطاعة الله.
quran:26:153

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.  

They said, ‘You are indeed one of the bewitched, those who have succumbed so many times to sorcery that their minds have been overcome.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٣

قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ  

{قالوا إنما أنت من المسحرين} الذين سحروا كثيرا حتى غلب على عقلهم.
quran:26:154

You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."  

And, moreover, you are just a human being like us. So bring ˹us˺ a sign, if you are sincere’, in your Mission.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٤

مَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِآيَةٍ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ  

{ما أنت} أيضا {إلا بشر مثلنا فأت بآية إن كنتم من الصادقين} في رسالتك.
quran:26:155

He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a ˹time of˺ drink, and for you is a ˹time of˺ drink, ˹each˺ on a known day.  

He said, ‘This is a she-camel; she shall drink, a share of the water, and you shall drink ˹each˺ on a known day.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٥

قَالَ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةٌ لَهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ  

{قال هذه ناقة لها شرب} نصيب من الماء {ولكم شرب يوم معلوم}.
quran:26:156

And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."  

And do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by the chastisement of an awful day’, ˹awful˺ because of the awfulness of the chastisement.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٦

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ  

{ولا تمسوها بسوء فيأخذكم عذاب يوم عظيم} بعظم العذاب.
quran:26:157

But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.  

But they hamstrung her — a group of them hamstrung her with the approval of others; and then became remorseful, for having hamstrung it.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٧

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا نَادِمِينَ  

{فعقروها} عقرها بعضهم برضاهم {فأصبحوا نادمين} على عقرها.
quran:26:158

And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.  

So they were seized by the chastisement, which had been promised and were destroyed. Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٨

فَأَخَذَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{فأخذهم العذاب} الموعود به فهلكوا {إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين}.
quran:26:159

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.  

Truly your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
القرآن:٢٦:١٥٩

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ  

{وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم}.
quran:26:160

The people of Lot denied the messengers  

The people of Lot denied the messengers,
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٠

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ  

{كذبت قوم لوط المرسلين}.
quran:26:161

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?  

when Lot, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
القرآن:٢٦:١٦١

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ  

{إذ قال لهم أخوهم لوط ألا تتقون}.
quran:26:162

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.  

Truly I am a trusted messenger ˹sent˺ to you.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٢

إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ  

{إني لكم رسول أمين}.
quran:26:164

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.  

I do not ask of you any reward for this; my reward lies only with the Lord of the Worlds.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٤

وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن} ما {أجري إلا على رب العالمين}.
quran:26:165

Do you approach males among the worlds  

What! Of all people you come unto males ˹to fornicate˺,
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٥

أَتَأْتُونَ الذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{أتأتون الذكران من العالمين} الناس.
quran:26:166

And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."  

and forsake the wives your Lord has created for you?, in other words, ˹you forsake intimacy with˺ their front parts? Nay, but you are a transgressing folk’, overstepping ˹the bounds of˺ what is lawful into what is unlawful.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٦

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ ۚ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ  

{وتذرون ما خلق لكم ربكم من أزواجكم} أي أقبالهن {بل أنتم قوم عادون} متجاوزون الحلال إلى الحرام.
quran:26:167

They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."  

They said, ‘If you do not desist, O Lot, from reproaching us, you will assuredly be of those expelled’, from our land.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٧

قَالُوا لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ يَا لُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُخْرَجِينَ  

{قالوا لئن لم تنته يا لوط} عن إنكارك علينا {لتكونن من المخرجين} من بلدتنا.
quran:26:168

He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest ˹it˺.  

He, Lot, said, ‘Truly I abhor, I detest, what you do.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٨

قَالَ إِنِّي لِعَمَلِكُمْ مِنَ الْقَالِينَ  

{قال} لوط {إني لعملكم من القالين} المبغضين.
quran:26:169

My Lord, save me and my family from ˹the consequence of˺ what they do."  

My Lord, deliver me and my family from what they do’, that is, from the punishment for it.
القرآن:٢٦:١٦٩

رَبِّ نَجِّنِي وَأَهْلِي مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ  

{رب نجني وأهلي مما يعلمون} أي من عذابه.
quran:26:170

So We saved him and his family, all,  

So We delivered him and all his family,
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٠

فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ  

{فنجيناه وأهله أجمعين}.
quran:26:171

Except an old woman among those who remained behind.  

except an old woman — his wife — among those who stayed behind, whom We destroyed.
القرآن:٢٦:١٧١

إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِي الْغَابِرِينَ  

{إلا عجوزا} امرأته {في الغابرين} الباقين أهلكناها.
quran:26:172

Then We destroyed the others.  

Then We destroyed ˹all˺ the others,
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٢

ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا الْآخَرِينَ  

{ثم دمرنا الآخرين} أهلناهم.
quran:26:173

And We rained upon them a rain ˹of stones˺, and evil was the rain of those who were warned.  

and We rained on them a rain, ˹We rained on them˺ stones — this ˹detail˺ pertains to ˹the previous˺ statement concerning their destruction — and evil was, their rain, the rain of those who were warned!
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٣

وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَطَرًا ۖ فَسَاءَ مَطَرُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ  

{وأمطرنا عليهم مطرا} حجارة من جملة الإهلاك {فساء مطر المنذرين} مطرهم.
quran:26:174

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.  

Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٤

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين}.
quran:26:175

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.  

Surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٥

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ  

{وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم}.
quran:26:176

The companions of the thicket denied the messengers  

The dwellers in the wood (a variant reading ˹for ashābu’l-aykati˺ has ashābu laykata), a thicket of trees near Midian, denied the messengers,
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٦

كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ  

{كذب أصحاب الأيكة} وفي قراءة بحذف الهمزة وإلقاء حركتها على اللام وفتح الهاء: هي غيضة شجر قرب مدين {المرسلين}.
quran:26:177

When Shu'ayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?  

when Shu‘ayb — He ˹God˺ does not say ‘their brother’ ˹in this instance˺ because he ˹Shu‘ayb˺ was not ˹in terms of lineage˺ one of them — said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٧

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ  

{إذ قال لهم شعيب} لم يقل أخوهم لأنه لم يكن منهم {ألا تتقون}.
quran:26:178

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.  

Truly I am a trusted messenger ˹sent˺ to you.
القرآن:٢٦:١٧٨

إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ  

{إني لكم رسول أمين}.
quran:26:180

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.  

I do not ask of you any reward for this; indeed my reward lies only with the Lord of the Worlds.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٠

وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن} ما {أجري إلا على رب العالمين}.
quran:26:181

Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.  

Give full measure and do not be of those who give short measure,
القرآن:٢٦:١٨١

أَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُخْسِرِينَ  

{أوْفوا الكيل} أتموه {ولا تكونوا من المخسرين} الناقصين.
quran:26:182

And weigh with an even balance.  

and weigh with an even balance,
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٢

وَزِنُوا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ  

{وزنوا بالقسطاس المستقيم} الميزان السوي.
quran:26:183

And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.  

and do not defraud people in their goods, do not diminish anything of what is due to them, and do not be degenerate in the earth, seeking corruption, by killing or otherwise (˹ta‘thaw, ‘degenerate’˺ derives from ‘athiya, meaning afsada, ‘to corrupt’; mufsidīna, ‘seeking corruption’, is a circumstantial qualifier emphasising the import of its operator ˹ta‘thaw˺).
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٣

وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ  

{ولا تبخسوا الناس أشياءهم} لا تنقصوهم من حقهم شيئا {ولا تعثوْا في الأرض مفسدين} بالقتل وغيره من عَثِيَ بكسر المثلثة أفسد ومفسدين حال مؤكدة لمعنى عاملها.
quran:26:184

And fear He who created you and the former creation."  

And fear Him Who created you and the former generations’, ˹all˺ creation ˹before you˺.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٤

وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالْجِبِلَّةَ الْأَوَّلِينَ  

{واتقوا الذي خلقكم والجبلة} الخليقة {الأولين}.
quran:26:185

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.  

They said, ‘You are indeed one of the bewitched.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٥

قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ  

{قالوا إنما أنت من المسحرين}.
quran:26:186

You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.  

You are just a human being like us. And we indeed (in, softened in place of the hardened form, its subject omitted, in other words ˹it would be˺ innahu) think that you are one of the liars.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٦

وَمَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا وَإِنْ نَظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ  

{وما أنت إلا بشر مثلنا وإن} مخففة من الثقيلة واسمها محذوف أي إنه {نظنك لمن الكاذبين}.
quran:26:187

So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."  

Then make fragments (read kisfan or kisafan) of the heaven fall upon us, if you are of the truthful’, in your Mission.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٧

فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ  

{فأسقط علينا كسْفا} بسكون السين وفتحها قطعا {من السماء إن كنت من الصادقين} في رسالتك.
quran:26:188

He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."  

He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing’, and will requite you for it.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٨

قَالَ رَبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ  

{قال ربي أعلم بما تعملون} فيجازيكم به.
quran:26:189

And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.  

But they denied him, so they were seized by the chastisement of the day of the shade (al-zulla) — a cloud which gave them shade when they suffered a bout of extreme heat but which then rained down fire on them and they were incinerated. Assuredly it was the chastisement of a tremendous day.
القرآن:٢٦:١٨٩

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ  

{فكذبوه فأخذهم عذاب يوم الظلة} هي سحابة أظلتهم بعد حر شديد أصابهم فأمطرت عليهم نارا فاحترقوا {إنه كان عذاب يوم عظيم}.
quran:26:190

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.  

Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٠

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين}.
quran:26:191

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.  

Surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
القرآن:٢٦:١٩١

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ  

{وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم}.
quran:26:192

And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.  

Truly it, the Qur’ān, is the revelation of the Lord of the Worlds,
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٢

وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنْزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{وإنه} أي القرآن {لتنزيل رب العالمين}.
quran:26:193

The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down  

brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit, Gabriel,
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٣

نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ  

{نزل به الروح الأمين} جبريل.
quran:26:194

Upon your heart, ˹O Muhammad˺ - that you may be of the warners -  

upon your heart, that you may be ˹one˺ of the warners,
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٤

عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنْذِرِينَ  

{على قلبك لتكون من المنذرين}.
quran:26:195

In a clear Arabic language.  

in a clear Arabic tongue (a variant reading ˹for nazala, ‘he brought down’, verse 193˺ has nuzzila, ‘was sent down’, and al-rūha, ‘the Spirit’, in the accusative, the subject of the verb being God).
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٥

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُبِينٍ  

{بلسان عربي مبين} بيَّن وفي قراءة بتشديد نزل ونصب الروح والفاعل الله.
quran:26:196

And indeed, it is ˹mentioned˺ in the scriptures of former peoples.  

And truly it, the allusion to the Qur’ān ˹that would be˺ revealed to Muhammad (s), is in the Scriptures, the Books, of the ancients, such as the Torah and the Gospel.
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٦

وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ  

{وإنه} ذكر القرآن المنزل على محمد {لفي زُبُر} كتب {الأولين} كالتوراة والإنجيل.
quran:26:197

And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?  

Is it not a sign, of this fact, for them, for the disbelievers of Mecca, that the learned of the Children of Israel recognise it?, ˹those˺ such as ‘Abd Allāh b. Salām and his companions, from among those who became ˹Muslim˺ believers: they are able inform ˹you˺ of this (read yakun with āyatan in the accusative, or takun with āyatun in the nominative).
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٧

أَوَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُمْ آيَةً أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ عُلَمَاءُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ  

{أو لم يكن لهم} لكفار مكة {آية} على ذلك {أن يعلمه علماء بني إسرائيل} كعبد الله بن سلام وأصحابه من الذين آمنوا فإنهم يخبرون بذلك، ويكن بالتحتانية ونصب آية وبالفوقانية ورفع آية.
quran:26:198

And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners  

For had We revealed it to some non-Arabs (a‘jamūn is the plural of a‘jam),
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٨

وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ الْأَعْجَمِينَ  

{ولو نزلناه على بعض الأعجمين} جمع أعجم.
quran:26:199

And he had recited it to them ˹perfectly˺, they would ˹still˺ not have been believers in it.  

and had he recited it to them, that is, ˹to˺ the disbelievers of Mecca, they would not have believed in it, disdaining to follow it.
القرآن:٢٦:١٩٩

فَقَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{فقرأه عليهم} كفار مكة {ما كانوا به مؤمنين} أنفة من اتباعه.
quran:26:200

Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.  

So, in the same way in which We would have caused denial of it to penetrate ˹the hearts of disbelievers˺ had it been recited by a non-Arab, We have caused, denial of, it to penetrate the hearts of the criminals, the Meccan disbelievers, when Muhammad (s) recites it.
القرآن:٢٦:٢٠٠

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ  

{كذلك} أي مثل إدخالنا التكذيب به بقراءة الأعجمي {سلكناه} أدخلنا التكذيب به {في قلوب المجرمين} كفار مكة بقراءة النبي.
