What makes you weep? He said: I am afraid I may die in the land from where I migrated as Sa'd b. Khaula had died. Thereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ said: O Allah, grant health to Sa'd. O Allah, grant health to Sad. He repeated it three times. He (Sa'd) said: Messenger of Allah, I own a large property and I have only one daughter as my inheritor. Should I not will away the whole of my property? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No. He said: (Should I not will away, ) two-thirds of the property? he (the Holy Prophet) said: No. He (Sa'd) (again) said: (Should I not will away) half (of my property)? He said: No. He (Sa'd) said: Then one-third? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: (Yes), one-third, and one-third is quite substanial. And what you spend as charity from your property is Sadaqa and flour spending on your family is also Sadaqa, and what your wife eats from your property is also Sadaqa, and that you leave your heirs well off (or he said: prospreous) is better than to leave them (poor and) begging from people. He (the Holy Prophet) pointed this with his hands.  

مسلم:١٦٢٨g – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْمَكِّيُّ حَدَّثَنَا الثَّقَفِيُّ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِيِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ سَعْدٍ كُلُّهُمْ يُحَدِّثُهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَى سَعْدٍ يَعُودُهُ بِمَكَّةَ فَبَكَى قَالَ مَا يُبْكِيكَ فَقَالَ قَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَمُوتَ بِالأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرْتُ مِنْهَا كَمَا مَاتَ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالاً كَثِيرًا وَإِنَّمَا يَرِثُنِي ابْنَتِي أَفَأُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَبِالثُّلُثَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَالنِّصْفُ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَالثُّلُثُ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّ صَدَقَتَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّ نَفَقَتَكَ عَلَى عِيَالِكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّ مَا تَأْكُلُ امْرَأَتُكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ أَهْلَكَ بِخَيْرٍ أَوْ قَالَ بِعَيْشٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited him when he was sick in Makkah. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I fear dying in the land from which I migrated, just as Sa'd ibn Khawlah died. Please pray to Allah to heal me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, heal Sa'd. O Allah, heal Sa'd. O Allah, heal Sa'd." He then said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a lot of wealth and no heir except for a daughter. Should I leave all my wealth as inheritance?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "No." He asked, "Should I leave two-thirds of it as inheritance?" The Prophet ﷺ again said, "No." He asked again, "Should I leave half of it as inheritance?" Once again, the Prophet ﷺ said, "No." He then asked, "Should I leave one-third of it as inheritance?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "One-third and even that is too much. Your expenditure from your wealth is charity, and your expenditure on your family is charity, and your expenditure on your relatives is charity. It is better for you to leave your family well-provided rather than leaving them dependent on others."  

أحمد:١٤٤٠ – حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ عَنْ ثَلاثَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ سَعْدٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ يَعُودُهُ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَمُوتَ بِالْأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرْتُ مِنْهَا كَمَا مَاتَ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَشْفِيَنِي قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا اللهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا اللهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالًا كَثِيرًا وَلَيْسَ لِي وَارِثٌ إِلا ابْنَةً أَفَأُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَفَأُوصِي بِثُلُثَيْهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَفَأُوصِي بِنِصْفِهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَفَأُوصِي بِالثُّلُثِ؟ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّ نَفَقَتَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّ نَفَقَتَكَ عَلَى عِيَالِكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّ نَفَقَتَكَ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ أَهْلَكَ بِعَيْشٍ أَوْ قَالَ بِخَيْرٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ  

ahmad:1488 – ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Sufyān > Saʿd > ʿĀmir b. Saʿd from his father

"The Prophet used to visit him when he was in Makkah, and he did not want to die in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet said: 'May Allah have mercy on Sa'd bin 'Afra.' He had only one daughter, and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'One-third?' He said: 'One-third, and one-third is a lot. For you to leave your heirs independent of means is better than if you were to leave them poor, holding out their hands to people.'" أحمد:١٤٨٨ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ سَعْدٍ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

جَاءَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُهُ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ وَهُوَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالْأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَرْحَمُ اللهُ سَعْدَ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ يَرْحَمُ اللهُ سَعْدَ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ إِلا ابْنَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَالنِّصْفُ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَالثُّلُثُ؟ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَإِنَّكَ مَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ وَلَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَكَ فَيَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ نَاسٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ
