The Prophet ﷺ came visiting me while I was (sick) in Mecca, ('Amir the sub-narrator said, and he disliked to die in the land, whence he had already migrated). He (i.e. the Prophet) said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on Ibn Afra (Saʿd bin Khaula)." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! May I will all my property (in charity)?" He said, "No." I said, "Then may I will half of it?" He said, "No". I said, "One third?" He said: "Yes, one third, yet even one third is too much. It is better for you to leave your inheritors wealthy than to leave them poor begging others, and whatever you spend for Allah's sake will be considered as a charitable deed even the handful of food you put in your wife's mouth. Allah may lengthen your age so that some people may benefit by you, and some others be harmed by you." At that time Saʿd had only one daughter.  

جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي وَأَنَا بِمَكَّةَ وَهْوَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا قَالَ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالشَّطْرُ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ الثُّلُثُ قَالَ فَالثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَإِنَّكَ مَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةُ الَّتِي تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ وَعَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَرْفَعَكَ فَيَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ نَاسٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلاَّ ابْنَةٌ  

In the year of Hajjat-ul-Wadaʿ the Prophet ﷺ visited me when I fell ill and was about to die because of that illness. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am very ill as you see, and I am a rich man and have no heir except my only daughter. Shall I give 2/3 of my property in charity?" He said, "No." I said, "Shall I then give one half of it in charity?" He said, "O Saʿd! Give 1/3 (in charity) and even 1/3 is too much. No doubt, it is better to leave your children rich than to leave them poor, reduced to begging from others. And Allah will reward you for whatever you spend with the intention of gaining Allah's Pleasure even if it were a mouthful of food you put into your wives mouth." I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Am I to be left behind (in Mecca) after my companions have gone?" He said, "If you should be left behind, you will be upgraded and elevated for every deed you will do with a desire to achieve Allah's Pleasure. I hope that you will live long so that some people will benefit by you while others will be harmed. O Allah! Please fulfill the migration of my companions and do not make them turn back on their heels. But (we feel sorry for) the unlucky Saʿd bin Khaulah." Messenger of Allah ﷺ lamented his death in Mecca.  

عَادَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَامَ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ مِنْ مَرَضٍ أَشْفَيْتُ مِنْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بَلَغَ بِي مِنَ الْوَجَعِ مَا تَرَى وَأَنَا ذُو مَالٍ وَلاَ يَرِثُنِي إِلاَّ ابْنَةٌ لِي وَاحِدَةٌ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَىْ مَالِي قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِشَطْرِهِ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ يَا سَعْدُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَذَرَ ذُرِّيَّتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَذَرَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنْ تَذَرَ ذُرِّيَّتَكَ وَلَسْتَ بِنَافِقٍ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلاَّ آجَرَكَ اللَّهُ بِهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَجْعَلُهَا فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قُلْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُخَلَّفُ بَعْدَ أَصْحَابِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلاً تَبْتَغِي بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلاَّ ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ دَرَجَةً وَرِفْعَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ تُخَلَّفُ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلاَ تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ تُوُفِّيَ بِمَكَّةَ وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ وَمُوسَى عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنْ تَذَرَ وَرَثَتَكَ  

The Prophet ﷺ visited me at Mecca while I was ill. I said (to him), "I have property; May I bequeath all my property in Allah's Cause?" He said, "No." I said, "Half of it?" He said, "No." I said, "One third of it?" He said, "One-third (is alright), yet it is still too much, for you'd better leave your inheritors wealthy than leave them poor, begging of others. Whatever you spend will be considered a Sadaqa for you, even the mouthful of food you put in the mouth of your wife. Anyhow Allah may let you recover, so that some people may benefit by you and others be harmed by you."  

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي وَأَنَا مَرِيضٌ بِمَكَّةَ فَقُلْتُ لِي مَالٌ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالشَّطْرُ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالثُّلُثُ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ أَنْ تَدَعَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ فَهُوَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ وَلَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يَرْفَعُكَ يَنْتَفِعُ بِكَ نَاسٌ وَيُضَرُّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ  

that his father said, "In the year of Hajjatal-Wadaʿ, the Prophet ﷺ paid me a visit while I was suffering from an ailment that had brought me to the verge of death. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! My sickness has reduced me to the (bad) state as you see, and I am a rich man, but have no heirs except one daughter. Shall I give 2/3 of my property in charity?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'Then 1/2 of it?' He said, 'Even 1/3 is too much, for, to leave your inheritors wealthy is better than to leave them in poverty, begging from people. And (know that) whatever you spend in Allah's Cause, you will get reward for it, even for the morsel of food which you put in your wife's mouth.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Will I be left behind my companions (in Mecca)?' He said, 'If you remain behind, whatever good deed you will do for Allah's Sake, will raise and upgrade you to a higher position (in Allah's Sight). May be you will live longer so that some people may benefit by you, and some e others (pagans) may get harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them on their heels; But (we pity) the poor Saʿd bin Khaula (not the above mentioned Saʿd) (died in Mecca)" Messenger of Allah ﷺ lamented (or pitied) for him as he died in Mecca. (See Hadith No. 693, Vol. 5)  

عَادَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ مِنْ شَكْوَى أَشْفَيْتُ مِنْهَا عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بَلَغَ بِي مَا تَرَى مِنَ الْوَجَعِ وَأَنَا ذُو مَالٍ وَلاَ يَرِثُنِي إِلاَّ ابْنَةٌ لِي وَاحِدَةٌ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَىْ مَالِي قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَبِشَطْرِهِ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَذَرَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَذَرَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلاَّ أُجِرْتَ حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلُ فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قُلْتُ أَأُخَلَّفُ بَعْدَ أَصْحَابِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلاً تَبْتَغِي بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلاَّ ازْدَدْتَ دَرَجَةً وَرِفْعَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ تُخَلَّفُ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلاَ تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ قَالَ سَعْدٌ رَثَى لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْ أَنْ تُوُفِّيَ بِمَكَّةَ  

"The Prophet used to visit him when he was in Makkah, and he did not want to die in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet said: 'May Allah have mercy on Sa'd bin 'Afra.' He had only one daughter, and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'One-third?' He said: 'One-third, and one-third is a lot. For you to leave your heirs independent of means is better than if you were to leave them poor, holding out their hands to people.'"  

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُهُ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ وَهُوَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ سَعْدَ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ أَوْ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ سَعْدَ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ إِلاَّ ابْنَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ النِّصْفَ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالثُّلُثَ قَالَ الثُّلُثَ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ مَا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ  

On the authority of his father (Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas): When he (Sa'd) fell ill at Mecca (according to the version of Ibn Abi Kkalaf) - then the agreed version has: which brought him near to death - the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to visit him. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a large amount of property, and my daughter is my only heir. May I give two-thirds (of my property) as a sadaqah (charity)? He said: No. He asked: Then a half ? He replied: No. He asked: Then one-third ? He replied: (You may will away) a third and third is a lot. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor begging from people. You will not spend anything, seeking thereby to please Allah, without being rewarded for it, even the mouthful you give your wife. I said: Messenger of Allah, shall I be left behind form immigration (to Medina)? He said: If you remain behind after me and do good works seeking the pleasure of Allah, your rank will be raised and degree increased. Perhaps you will not remain behind, and some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. He then said: O Allah, complete the immigration of my Companions and do not turn them back. But miserable was Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lamented on him as he died at Mecca.  

ابْنُ أَبِي خَلَفٍ بِمَكَّةَ ثُمَّ اتَّفَقَا أَشْفَى فِيهِ فَعَادَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالاً كَثِيرًا وَلَيْسَ يَرِثُنِي إِلاَّ ابْنَتِي أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِالثُّلُثَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَبِالشَّطْرِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَبِالثُّلُثِ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَتْرُكَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً إِلاَّ أُجِرْتَ بِهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَتَخَلَّفُ عَنْ هِجْرَتِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تُخَلَّفْ بَعْدِي فَتَعْمَلْ عَمَلاً صَالِحًا تُرِيدُ بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ لاَ تَزْدَادُ بِهِ إِلاَّ رِفْعَةً وَدَرَجَةً لَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلاَ تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ  

"I was ill during the year of the Conquest (of Makkah) with an illness bringing me to the brink of death. So The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Indeed I have a great deal of wealth and I do not have any heirs except my daughter, so should I will all of my wealth?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then two-thirds of my wealth?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then a third' He said: 'No.' A third and a third is too much. If you leave your heirs without need it is better than to leave them in poverty begging from the people. Indeed you do not do any spending (on your family) except that you are rewarded for it, even the morsel of food you raise to your wife's mouth.'" He said: "I said: 'Will I be left behind from my emigration?' He said: 'You will not be left behind after me,and do righteous deeds intending Allah's Face, except that it will add to your elevation in rank. Perhaps you will remain until some people benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them on their heels. But the case of Sa'd bin Khawlah is sad.'" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt sorry for him dying in Makkah.  

مَرِضْتُ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ مَرَضًا أَشْفَيْتُ مِنْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَأَتَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالاً كَثِيرًا وَلَيْسَ يَرِثُنِي إِلاَّ ابْنَتِي أَفَأُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَثُلُثَىْ مَالِي قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالشَّطْرُ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَالثُّلُثُ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَدَعْ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً إِلاَّ أُجِرْتَ فِيهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُخَلَّفُ عَنْ هِجْرَتِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ بَعْدِي فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلاً تُرِيدُ بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلاَّ ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ رِفْعَةً وَدَرَجَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلاَ تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ visited him while he was sick in Makkah, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?" He said, "No." I said, "Shall I bequeath half of it?" He said, "No." I said, "Shall I bequeath one-third of it?" He said, "One-third and even one-third is a lot. It is better for you to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them poor, forcing people to provide for them. And no matter how much you spend on your family, you will be rewarded for it, even for a morsel of food that you raise to your wife's mouth." He said, "At that time, he had only one daughter." Saad mentioned hijrah (migration) and said, "May Allah have mercy on Ibn 'Afrah. Perhaps Allah will raise your rank until a group benefits from you while others are harmed."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ يَعُودُهُ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ بِمَكَّةَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَبِالشَّطْرِ؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَبِالثُّلُثِ؟ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَبِيرٌ أَوْ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَدَعَ وَارِثَكَ غَنِيًّا خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُ فَقِيرًا يَتَكَفَّفُ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ مَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ فَإِنَّكَ تُؤْجَرُ فِيهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قَالَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلا ابْنَةٌ فَذَكَرَ سَعْدٌ الْهِجْرَةَ فَقَالَ يَرْحَمُ اللهُ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ وَلَعَلَّ اللهَ يَرْفَعُكَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ قَوْمٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ

He said: If you remain behind after me and do good works seeking the pleasure of Allah, your rank will be raised and degree increased. Perhaps you will not remain behind, and some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. He then said: O Allah, complete the immigration of my Companions and do not turn them back. But miserable was Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lamented on him as he died at Mecca. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2864)   

مَرِضْتُ بِمَكَّةَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ مَرَضًا أَشْفَيْتُ مِنْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَعَادَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالًا كَثِيرًا وَلَيْسَ يَرِثُنِي إِلَّا ابْنَتِي أَفَأُوصِي بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي؟ قَالَ «لَا» قُلْتُ الشَّطْرُ؟ قَالَ «لَا» قُلْتُ الثُّلُثُ؟ قَالَ «الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَتْرُكَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَتْرُكَهُمْ عَالَةَ يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تُرِيدُ بِهَا وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا أُجِرْتَ عَلَيْهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُخَلَّفُ عَنْ هِجْرَتِي قَالَ «إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ بَعْدِي فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا تُرِيدُ بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ رِفْعَةً وَدَرَجَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ بَعْدِي حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ أَقْوَامٌ بِكَ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ امْضِ لِأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلَا تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ بْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ»  

On the authority of his father (Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas): When he (Sa'd) fell ill at Mecca (according to the version of Ibn Abi Kkalaf) - then the agreed version has: which brought him near to death - the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to visit him. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a large amount of property, and my daughter is my only heir. May I give two-thirds (of my property) as a sadaqah (charity)? He said: No. He asked: Then a half ? He replied: No. He asked: Then one-third ? He replied: (You may will away) a third and third is a lot. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor begging from people. You will not spend anything, seeking thereby to please Allah, without being rewarded for it, even the mouthful you give your wife. I said: Messenger of Allah, shall I be left behind form immigration (to Medina)? جَاءَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي عَامَ حِجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ قَالَ وَبِي وَجَعٌ قَدِ اشْتَدَّ بِي فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ بَلَغَ مِنِّي الْوَجَعُ مَا تَرَى وَأَنَا ذُو مَالٍ وَلَا يَرِثُنِي إِلَّا ابْنَةٌ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَبِالشَّطْرِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ قُلْتُ فَبِالثُّلُثِ؟ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ كَبِيرٌ أَوْ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَدَعْ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللهِ إِلَّا أُجِرْتَ فِيهَا حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلَ فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُخَلَّفُ بَعْدَ أَصْحَابِي؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا إِلَّا ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ دَرَجَةً وَرِفْعَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللهُمَّ أَمْضِ لِأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلَا تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنِ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الْقَطَّانِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ قُلْتُ فَبِالشَّطْرِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ لَا الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came to me and visited me. He disliked the idea of dying in the land he had migrated from so I asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, should I bequeath all my wealth?" He replied, "No." I asked, "Then should I bequeath half of it?" He again replied, "No." I asked, "Should I bequeath one third of it?" He replied, "Yes, and one third is still a lot. Verily, if you leave your heirs rich, it is better for them than leaving them in need, begging people with their hands. And no matter what you spend, it is considered as charity, even if it is just a morsel that you raise to your wife. Perhaps Allah will elevate you and benefit others through you, while harming other people." And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Abu Amr Uthman ibn Ahmad ibn As-Sammak, narrating from Hanbal ibn Ishaq ibn Hanbal, narrating from Abu Nuaim, narrating from Sufyan ibn Saeed. He mentioned it with his chain of narrators, except that he said, "He visited me while I was ill in Mecca and he disliked the idea of dying in the land he had migrated from." Then he said, "May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra." And he mentioned it.  

جَاءَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي وَكَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالْأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُوصِي بِمَالِي كُلِّهِ؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَالشَّطْرِ؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَالثُّلُثِ؟ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَدَعَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ مِنْ أَنْ تَدَعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَإِنَّكَ مَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ وَلَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَكَ فَيَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أُنَاسٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ 17781 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو عَمْرٍو عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ السَّمَّاكِ ثنا حَنْبَلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ وَمَعْنَاهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَعُودُنِي وَأَنَا مَرِيضٌ بِمَكَّةَ وَهُوَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالْأَرْضِ الَّتِي هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ ابْنَ عَفْرَاءَ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَهُ  

"عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عن أَبِيهِ قَالَ: جَاءَنِى رسولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَعُودُنِى عَامَ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاع وَبِى وَجَعٌ قَدِ اشْتَدَّ بِى، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! قَدْ بَلَغَ مِنِّى الوَجَعُ مَا تَرَى وَأَنَا ذُو مَالٍ، ولَا يرِثُنِى إلَّا ابْنَةٌ لِى، أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَىْ مَالِى؟ قَالَ: لَا، قُلْتُ: فَالشَّطْرُ، قَالَ: لَا. قُلْتُ: فَالثُّلُثُ، قالَ: الثُّلُثُ، والثُّلُثُ كَثيرٌ، إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَدَعْ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِياءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَدعَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ، وإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِى بِهَا وَجهَ اللهِ إلا أُجِرْتَ فِيهَا حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلُ في فِى امْرَأَتِكَ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسولَ اللهِ! أُخَلَّفُ بَعْدَ أَصْحَابِى؟ فَقَالَ: إنَّكَ لن تُخَلَّفَ فَتَعْمَلَ عملًا صَالِحًا إلا ازْدَدْتَ به دَرَجَةً وَرِفْعَةً، وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتّى تَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخرُونَ، اللهمَّ أَمْضِ لأَصْحَابِى هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلَا تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ، لكنِ الْبَائسُ سَعْدُ بْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرثِى لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ".  

"عَنْ عُمَرَ بنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ سَعْدٍ: أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ جَاءَهُ يَعُودُه وَهُوَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بالأَرْضِ الَّتى هَاجَرَ مِنْهَا، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! أُوصِى بِمَالِى كُلِّهِ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ فَالشَّطْرُ؟ قَالَ: لَا: ، قَالَ: فَالثُّلُثُ، والثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ. إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَدَعْ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ بِخَيْرٍ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ أنْ تَدعَهُم عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ مَا فِى أَيْدِيهِمْ، مَهْمَا أنْفَقْتَ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ، حَتَّى اللُّقْمَة تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِى امْرَأَتِكَ".
