Once I went to Abu- Saʿid Al-Khudri and asked him, "Won't you come with us to the date-palm trees to have a talk?" So Abu Saʿid went out and I asked him, "Tell me what you heard from the Prophet ﷺ about the Night of Qadr." Abu Saʿid replied, "Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Iʿtikaf (seclusion) on the first ten days of the month of Ramadan and we did the same with him. Gabriel came to him and said, 'The night you are looking for is ahead of you.' So the Prophet ﷺ performed the Iʿtikaf in the middle (second) ten days of the month of Ramadan and we too performed Iʿtikaf with him. Gabriel came to him and said, 'The night which you are looking for is ahead of you.' In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon saying, 'Whoever has performed Iʿtikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown the Night of "Qadr", but have forgotten its date, but it is in the odd nights of the last ten nights. I saw in my dream that I was prostrating in mud and water.' In those days the roof of the mosque was made of branches of date-palm trees. At that time the sky was clear and no cloud was visible, but suddenly a cloud came and it rained. The Prophet ﷺ led us in the prayer and I saw the traces of mud on the forehead and on the nose of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So it was the confirmation of that dream."

انْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ نَتَحَدَّثْ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ قُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي مَا سَمِعْتَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَشْرَ الأُوَلِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَطْلُبُ أَمَامَكَ فَاعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ فَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَطْلُبُ أَمَامَكَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَطِيبًا صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي نُسِّيتُهَا وَإِنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ كَأَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي طِينٍ وَمَاءٍ وَكَانَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ جَرِيدَ النَّخْلِ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ شَيْئًا فَجَاءَتْ قَزْعَةٌ فَأُمْطِرْنَا فَصَلَّى بِنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ عَلَى جَبْهَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَرْنَبَتِهِ تَصْدِيقَ رُؤْيَاهُ

I asked Abu Saʿid, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced Iʿtikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead."

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ وَكَانَ لِي صَدِيقًا فَقَالَ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَرَجَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَخَطَبَنَا وَقَالَ إِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا أَوْ نُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمَطَرَتْ حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf in Ramadan during the ten nights in the middle of the month. When evening came after twenty nights had passed and the twenty-first was beginning, he would return to his dwelling, and those who had been observing i'tikaf with him would return as well.

Then, in a month in which he was observing i'tikaf, he remained on the night on which he used to return. He addressed the people and instructed them as Allah willed, then said: "I used to observe i'tikaf during these ten, but it has now become apparent to me that I should observe i'tikaf during these last ten. So whoever was observing i'tikaf with me should remain in his place of i'tikaf. I was shown this night, then I was made to forget it, so seek it in the last ten, and seek it on every odd night. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud."

The sky then opened up with rain on that night, and it rained, so the mosque leaked at the prayer place of the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the twenty-first. My own eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I looked at him as he left from the morning prayer with his face full of mud and water.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي رَمَضَانَ الْعَشْرَ الَّتِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ، فَإِذَا كَانَ حِينَ يُمْسِي مِنْ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً تَمْضِي وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ، وَرَجَعَ مَنْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ مَعَهُ.

وَأَنَّهُ أَقَامَ فِي شَهْرٍ جَاوَرَ فِيهِ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي كَانَ يَرْجِعُ فِيهَا، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «كُنْتُ أُجَاوِرُ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ، ثُمَّ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُجَاوِرَ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ، فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَثْبُتْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ، وَقَدْ أُرِيتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا، فَابْتَغُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ، وَابْتَغُوهَا فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ».

فَاسْتَهَلَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ فَأَمْطَرَتْ، فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فِي مُصَلَّى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ، فَبَصُرَتْ عَيْنِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ انْصَرَفَ مِنَ الصُّبْحِ وَوَجْهُهُ مُمْتَلِئٌ طِينًا وَمَاءً.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan and once he stayed in Iʿtikaf till the night of the twenty-first and it was the night in the morning of which he used to come out of his Iʿtikaf. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should stay in Iʿtikaf for the last ten days, for I was informed (of the date) of the Night (of Qadr) but I have been caused to forget it. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water in the morning of that night. So, look for it in the last ten nights and in the odd ones of them." It rained that night and the roof of the mosque dribbled as it was made of leaf stalks of date-palms. I saw with my own eyes the mark of mud and water on the forehead of the Prophet (i.e. in the morning of the twenty-first).

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوْسَطِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَاعْتَكَفَ عَامًا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَهِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي يَخْرُجُ مِنْ صَبِيحَتِهَا مِنِ اعْتِكَافِهِ قَالَ مَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَعْتَكِفِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ وَقَدْ أُرِيتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ مِنْ صَبِيحَتِهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ وَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ فَمَطَرَتِ السَّمَاءُ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ وَكَانَ الْمَسْجِدُ عَلَى عَرِيشٍ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فَبَصُرَتْ عَيْنَاىَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ أَثَرُ الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ مِنْ صُبْحِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ

I asked Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri, "Did you hear Messenger of Allah ﷺ talking about the Night of Qadr?" He replied in the affirmative and said, "Once we were in Iʿtikaf with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the middle ten days of (Ramadan) and we came out of it in the morning of the twentieth, and Messenger of Allah ﷺdelivered a sermon on the 20th (of Ramadan) and said, 'I was informed (of the date) of the Night of Qadr (in my dream) but had forgotten it. So, look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night (as a sign of the Night of Qadr). So, whoever had been in Iʿtikaf with Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return for it.' The people returned to the mosque (for Iʿtikaf). There was no trace of clouds in the sky. But all of a sudden a cloud came and it rained. Then the prayer was established (they stood for the prayer) and Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated in mud and water and I saw mud over the forehead and the nose of the Prophet.

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ ؓ قُلْتُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمِ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَخَرَجْنَا صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ قَالَ فَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي نُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ وَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعَ النَّاسُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمَطَرَتْ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَسَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ الطِّينَ فِي أَرْنَبَتِهِ وَجَبْهَتِهِ

I used to devote myself (observe i'tikaf) during these ten (nights). Then I started devoting myself in the last ten (nights). And he who desires to observe i'tikaf along with me should spend the night) at his place of i'tikaf. And I saw this night (Lailat-ul-Qadr) but I forgot it (the exact night) ; so seek it;In the last ten nights on odd numbers. I saw (the glimpses of that dream) that I was prostrating in water and mud. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: It rained on the twenty-first night and the water dripped (from the roof) of the mosque at the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer. I looked at him and as he completed the dawn prayer, (I found) his face was wet with mud and water.

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الَّتِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ فَإِذَا كَانَ مِنْ حِينِ تَمْضِي عِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ وَرَجَعَ مَنْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ أَقَامَ فِي شَهْرٍ جَاوَرَ فِيهِ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي كَانَ يَرْجِعُ فِيهَا فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُجَاوِرُ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُجَاوِرَ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَبِتْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ مُطِرْنَا لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فِي مُصَلَّى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَقَدِ انْصَرَفَ مِنْ صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ وَوَجْهُهُ مُبْتَلٌّ طِينًا وَمَاءً

I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights).

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَّلَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ فِي قُبَّةٍ تُرْكِيَّةٍ عَلَى سُدَّتِهَا حَصِيرٌ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ الْحَصِيرَ بِيَدِهِ فَنَحَّاهَا فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْقُبَّةِ ثُمَّ أَطْلَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَكَلَّمَ النَّاسَ فَدَنَوْا مِنْهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي اعْتَكَفْتُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَّلَ أَلْتَمِسُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفْتُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ ثُمَّ أُتِيتُ فَقِيلَ لِي إِنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فَلْيَعْتَكِفْ فَاعْتَكَفَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ قَالَ وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُهَا لَيْلَةَ وِتْرٍ وَأَنِّي أَسْجُدُ صَبِيحَتَهَا فِي طِينٍ وَمَاءٍ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَقَدْ قَامَ إِلَى الصُّبْحِ فَمَطَرَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فَأَبْصَرْتُ الطِّينَ وَالْمَاءَ فَخَرَجَ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ وَجَبِينُهُ وَرَوْثَةُ أَنْفِهِ فِيهِمَا الطِّينُ وَالْمَاءُ وَإِذَا هِيَ لَيْلَةُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ

'We discussed amongst ourselves Lailat-ul-Qadr. I came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) who was a friend of mine and said to him: Would you not go with us to the garden of date trees? He went out with a cloak over him. I said to him: Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ making mention of Lailat-ul-Qadr? He said: Yes, (and added) we were observing i'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the middle ten days of Ramadan, and came out on the morning of the twentieth and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: I was shown Lailat-ul-Qadr, but I forgot (the exact night) or I was caused to forget it, so seek it in the last ten odd (nights), and I was shown that I was prostrating in water and clay. So he who wanted to observe i'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return (to the place of i'tikaf). He (Abu Sa'id al-Khudri) said: And we returned and did not find any patch of cloud in the sky. Then the cloud gathered and there was (so heavy) a downpour that the roof of the mosque which was made of the branches of date-palms began to drip. Then there was prayer and I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in water and clay till I saw the traces of clay on his forehead.

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ ؓ وَكَانَ لِي صَدِيقًا فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ فَخَرَجَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَمِيصَةٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْوُسْطَى مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَرَجْنَا صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي نَسِيتُهَا أَوْ أُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ كُلِّ وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ قَالَ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً قَالَ وَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ قَالَ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَاعْتَكَفَ عَامًا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَهِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي يَخْرُجُ فِيهَا مِنَ اعْتِكَافِهِ قَالَ مَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَعْتَكِفِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ مِنْ صَبِيحَتِهَا فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ وَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَمُطِرَتِ السَّمَاءُ مِنْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ وَكَانَ الْمَسْجِدُ عَلَى عَرِيشٍ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَأَبْصَرَتْ عَيْنَاىَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ وَأَنْفِهِ أَثَرُ الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ مِنْ صَبِيحَةِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe I'tikaf during the middle ten days of the month, and after the twentieth (day of the month), he would come out on the twenty-first and go back to his home, and those who were observing I'tikaf with him would go back like him. Then he stayed one month on the night when he used to go back home, and he addressed the people and enjoined upon them whatever Allah (SWT) willed. Then he said: 'I used to observe I'tikaf during these ten days, then I decided to spend the last ten days in I'tikaf. So whoever was observing I'tikaf with me, let him stay in his place of I'tikaf, for I was shown this night (Lailatul Qadr), then I was caused to forget it, so seek it during the last ten nights on the odd-numbered nights. And I saw myself prostrating in water and mud.'" Abu Sa'eed said: "It rained on the night of the twenty-first, and the roof of the Masjid leaked over the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray. I looked at him when he had finished praying subh and his face was wet with water and mud."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الَّذِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ فَإِذَا كَانَ مِنْ حِينِ يَمْضِي عِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ وَيَرْجِعُ مَنْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ أَقَامَ فِي شَهْرٍ جَاوَرَ فِيهِ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي كَانَ يَرْجِعُ فِيهَا فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُجَاوِرُ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُجَاوِرَ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَثْبُتْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي كُلِّ وَتْرٍ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مُطِرْنَا لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فِي مُصَلَّى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَقَدِ انْصَرَفَ مِنْ صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ وَوَجْهُهُ مُبْتَلٌّ طِينًا وَمَاءً

[AI] "Some people, indeed, observe it every year. So we went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and I said, 'O Abu Sa'id, did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning the Night of Qadr?' He said, 'Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan and we also observed it with him. Then, when the morning of the twentieth day came, he returned and we returned with him. And he indicated the Night of Qadr for us, but then I forgot it.' So he said, 'Indeed, I saw the Night of Qadr, but then I forgot it. And in my vision, I saw myself prostrating in mud and water. Whoever observes i'tikaf with me, let him return to his i'tikaf and seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd-numbered nights. And on the last of those nights, the sky poured down rain upon us. And half of the mosque was covered with palm leaves and twigs.' And he, who is the most honorable and upon whom Allah sent down the Book, led us in the Maghrib prayer on the twenty-first night. Indeed, his forehead and the bridge of his nose were covered with water and mud."

بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ إِنَّهَا تَدُورُ مِنَ السَّنَةِ فَمَشَيْنَا إِلَى أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَاللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْوَسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ وَرَجَعْنَا مَعَهُ وَأُرِيَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيَهَا فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا فَأُرَانِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَرْجِعْ إِلَى مُعْتَكَفِهِ ابْتَغُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ مِنْهَا وَهَاجَتْ عَلَيْنَا السَّمَاءُ آخِرَ تِلْكَ الْعَشِيَّةِ وَكَانَ نِصْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ عَرِيشًا مِنْ جَرِيدٍ فَوَكَفَ فَوَالَّذِي هُوَ أَكْرَمَهُ وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابَ لَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي بِنَا صَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَإِنَّ جَبْهَتَهُ وَأَرْنَبَةَ أَنْفِهِ لَفِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ

[AI] We memorized the night of Al-Qadr in a group of Quraysh. So, I went to Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, who was a friend of mine, and I said, "Come out with us to the palm grove." He went out with us wearing a garment he had, and I said, "Have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning the night of Al-Qadr?" He replied, "Yes. We performed I'tikaf (seclusion for worship) with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the middle ten days of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the morning of the twentieth (night), and he said, 'I saw the night of Al-Qadr but then I forgot it, or he said, I missed it, so seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd-numbered nights. Indeed, I saw myself prostrating in mud and water. So, whoever performed I'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return.' So, we returned, and we did not see any clouds in the sky. Then a cloud came and it started raining until the roofs of the mosque started dripping. The rainwater was of the color of the germs of the palm tree, and the prayer was established. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in the water and mud until I saw the signs of mud on his forehead."

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ وَكَانَ صَدِيقًا لِي فَقُلْتُ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِفَخَرَجَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَمِيصَةٌ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْوَسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَقَالَ أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا أَوْ قَالَ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night. I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأُوَلَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ فِي قُبَّةٍ تُرْكِيَّةٍ عَلَى سُدَّتِهَا قِطْعَةُ حَصِيرٍ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ الْحَصِيرَ بِيَدِهِ فَنَحَّاهَا فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْقُبَّةِ ثُمَّ أَطْلَعَ رَأْسَهُ يُكَلِّمُ النَّاسَ فَدَنَوْا مِنْهُ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي اعْتَكَفَتُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأُوَلِ الْتَمِسُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفْتُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ ثُمَّ أُتِيتُ فَقِيلَ لِي إِنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فَلْيَعْتَكِفْ» فَاعْتَكَفَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ قَالَ «وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُهَا وَإِنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي صَبِيحَتِهَا فِي طِينٍ وَمَاءٍ» فَأَصْبَحَ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَقَدْ قَامَ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَمَطَرَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فَأَبْصَرَتُ الطِّينَ ظَاهِرًا فَخَرَجَ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ وَجَبِينُهُ وَأَنْفُهُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ فَإِذَا هِيَ لَيْلَةُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ

[AI] I came to Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri and said, "O Abu Sa'eed, come out with us to the palm trees so that we can talk." He said, "Yes." He called for a garment to wear, then he came out. I said, "O Abu Sa'eed, have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the Night of Decree?" He said, "Yes, we used to observe Itikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the first ten days of Ramadan. When the twentieth day came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever was observing Itikaf should continue to do so, for I have been shown that Night (of Decree), but I have been made to forget which night it is, and I saw myself prostrating in water and mud. Seek it on the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.'" Abu Sa'eed said, "But we did not see any clouds in the sky." Then when the night came, the sky was covered with clouds like mountains, and it rained until the roof of the mosque started to leak. I looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in water and mud until I saw the mud on the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."

أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ نَتَحَدَّثُ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ يَلْبَسُهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَشْرٍ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي أُنْسِيتُهَا وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فِي وِتْرٍ» قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ إِذَا السَّحَابُ أَمْثَالُ الْجِبَالِ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ وَسَقْفُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَجَدَ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ الطِّينَ فِي أَرْنَبَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

I used to devote myself (observe i'tikaf) during these ten (nights). Then I started devoting myself in the last ten (nights). And he who desires to observe i'tikaf along with me should spend the night) at his place of i'tikaf. And I saw this night (Lailat-ul-Qadr) but I forgot it (the exact night) ; so seek it;In the last ten nights on odd numbers. I saw (the glimpses of that dream) that I was prostrating in water and mud. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: It rained on the twenty-first night and the water dripped (from the roof) of the mosque at the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer. I looked at him and as he completed the dawn prayer, (I found) his face was wet with mud and water. (Using translation from Muslim 1167a)

I used to devote myself (observe i'tikaf) during these ten (nights). Then I started devoting myself in the last ten (nights). And he who desires to observe i'tikaf along with me should spend the night) at his place of i'tikaf. And I saw this night (Lailat-ul-Qadr) but I forgot it (the exact night) ; so seek it;In the last ten nights on odd numbers. I saw (the glimpses of that dream) that I was prostrating in water and mud. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: It rained on the twenty-first night and the water dripped (from the roof) of the mosque at the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer. I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night. I asked Abu Saʿid, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced Iʿtikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2016)

[AI] We memorized the Night of Decree in a group from the Quraysh. So I stood and went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and said, "O Abu Sa'id, won't you come out with us to the date-palm trees?" He replied, "Yes." So he called for a garment and wore it, then we went out and I asked him, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning anything about the Night of Decree?" He replied, "Yes. We performed Itikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the middle ten days of Ramadan. When the twenty-first (night of Ramadan) came, he commanded us to keep on Itikaf and said, 'Whoever has performed Itikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown that tonight is the Night of Decree. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night. At the time the roof of the mosque was made of leaves of date-palm trees. At that time, while I was watching him, I saw mud and water on the forehead and the nose of the Prophet ﷺ till I saw the trace of mud and water on the forehead of the Prophet ﷺ and on the tip of his nose."

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقُمْتُ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ أَلَا تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ فَأَدْخَلَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْنَا فَقُلْتُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةُ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَامَ فِينَا فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَثَارَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَسَقْفُهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ عَلَى أَرْنَبَتِهِ وَجَبْهَتِهِ
