59. Book of Virtues of the Companions (4/13)
[Machine] I heard the son of Abi Aufa saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Give glad tidings to Khadijah of a house in Paradise made of reeds, where there is no noise or fatigue.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have been commanded to give glad tidings to Khadijah of a house in Paradise made of reeds, where there is no noise or tiredness."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to say when slaughtering a sheep, "Take this meat to the friends of Khadijah." One day, I got angry at him and he said, ﷺ , "I was given her love as a provision."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "Take it to Fulanah, for she used to be the friend of Khadijah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to mention Khadijah often. I said, "Indeed, Allah has replaced you with an elderly woman among the elderly women of Quraysh, with red cheeks and sagging breasts." So the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became red with anger, a redness that I would only see on him when the revelation would come down. And when he saw me looking at her, he said, "Do you think mercy or punishment?"
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew four lines on the ground and said, "Do you know what this is?" They said, Allah and his Messenger know best. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of women among the people of Jannah are: (1) Khadījah b. Khuwaylid, (2) Fatimah b. Muḥammad, (3) ‘Āsiyah b. Muzāḥim, the wife of Pharaoh, and (4) Maryam daughter of ‘Imran." (Using translation from Aḥmad 2668)
[Machine] From his father and others, they prepared to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the following year in Mecca, along with those who followed them from their people. They left in the following year, seventy men among those who left their land of polytheism, Ka'b bin Malik said, "Until we were in the vicinity of the desert, Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur bin Sakhra bin Khansa', who was our elder and leader, said, 'I saw a vision, and by Allah, I do not know if you agree with me or not. I saw that I should not be one of those who seeks to destroy the Ka'bah, even though I pray towards it.' We said, 'Do not do that, for we have not received any report that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ prays except towards Ash-Sham, and we only pray towards his Qiblah.' So we insisted on this with him, and he insisted on it with us, and we set out with that. When it was time for prayer, he prayed towards the Ka'bah and we prayed towards Ash-Sham until we reached Mecca. Ka'b bin Malik said, "Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur bin Sakhra' said to me, 'By Allah, my nephew, it has occurred to me during this journey something that I would like you to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about, for it has occurred to me something regarding this matter in my mind. I have seen that I should not be one of those who seeks to destroy the Ka'bah, even though I pray towards it, and my companions have reproached me and opposed me until it has occurred to me something regarding this in my mind.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, you were on a Qiblah, so if you had persevered in it.' And he did not add anything to that." Then we went to Mina and performed the Hajj until when it was the middle of the days of Tashreeq, we (the Prophet and us) approached Al-Aqabah. We came out quietly from our tents and hid that from the polytheists among our people. When we gathered at Al-Aqabah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came with his uncle Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the Qur'an to us, and we responded to him and believed in him and accepted what he said. Then Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib spoke and said, "O people of the Khazraj, indeed Muhammad is one of us, as you know, and we have prevented him from one of the things that we have prevented ourselves and our women and children from. Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur spoke and took the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Give us your pledge." He said, "I give you my pledge on the condition that you protect me from those things that you protect yourselves, your women, and your children from." He said, "Yes, by the One Who sent you with the truth, we are the people of war, and we have inherited it from one generation to another."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ stayed for ten years, tracing people in their homes during the season, in Muhjanah, 'Ukaz, and in their homes in Mina. He would say, 'Who will shelter me and support me until I deliver the messages of my Lord, and Paradise will be his?' But he ﷺ did not find anyone to support or shelter him until a man would leave Egypt or Yemen and his people would come to him and say, 'Beware of the Quraysh boy who walks among their caravans, inviting them to Allah.' They would point him out until Allah sent to him someone from Yathrib (Madina). The man would come to him, believe in him, and recite the Qur'an to him. Then he would return to his people, and they would embrace Islam until there was not a single house in Yathrib without a group of Muslims openly practicing Islam. They (the Muslims) consulted with each other and said, 'How long will the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be expelled and in fear in the mountains of Makkah?' So we set off until we reached him during the season. The people of 'Aqabah promised him and 'Abbas, his uncle, addressed the people of Yathrib, saying, 'O people of Yathrib, we gathered with him by a man and two men. When he looked at our faces, he said, 'These are people I don't know, they are young people.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you want us to pledge allegiance to you upon?' He said, 'Pledge allegiance to me upon hearing and obeying, in times of ease and difficulty, in matters of expenditure and hardship, and in commanding good and forbidding evil. And that you do not reproach me about Allah if you are not pleased with something, and that you support me when I come to you, denying me what you deny yourselves, your wives, and your children. Paradise will be yours.' So we pledged allegiance to him, and he took the hand of As'ad bin Zurarah, who was the youngest of the seventy except me. He said, 'O people of Yathrib, we never struck the liver of any animal except that we knew he was the Messenger of Allah, and his expulsion today is the separation of all the Arab tribes, and the killing of your best men. If you wish, you bear this burden and the reward will be with Allah, and if you fear for your own selves, leave him alone, for he is the most deserving to be excused before Allah.' They said, 'O As'ad, remove your hand from us. By Allah, we will not abandon this pledge nor break it.' So a man stood up and took the hand of 'Abbas, and guaranteed its fulfillment with Paradise.

[Machine] He informed me, saying, "I was the leader of my father after he lost his eyesight, and he could not hear the call to Friday prayer except that he would say, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurarah.' I said, 'O Father, it amazes me your prayer for my father Ummamah every time you hear the call to Friday prayer.' He said, 'Oh my son, he was the first one to gather the people for Friday prayer in the city of Harrah of Bani Bayadah in a place called Al-Khadamat. I said, 'And how many were you that day?' I went out with 'Ubaidullah bin ʿAdi Al-Khaiyar. When we reached Hims (i.e. a town in Syria), 'Ubaidullah bin ʿAdi said (to me), "Would you like to see Wahshi so that we may ask him about the killing of Hamza?" I replied, "Yes." Wahshi used to live in Hims. We enquired about him and somebody said to us, "He is that in the shade of his palace, as if he were a full water skin." So we went up to him, and when we were at a short distance from him, we greeted him and he greeted us in return. 'Ubaidullah was wearing his turban and Wahshi could not see except his eyes and feet. 'Ubaidullah said, "O Wahshi! Do you know me?" Wahshi looked at him and then said, "No, by Allah! But I know that ʿAdi bin Al-Khiyar married a woman called Um Qital, the daughter of Abu Al-Is, and she delivered a boy for him at Mecca, and I looked for a wet nurse for that child. (Once) I carried that child along with his mother and then I handed him over to her, and your feet resemble that child's feet." Then 'Ubaidullah uncovered his face and said (to Wahshi), "Will you tell us (the story of) the killing of Hamza?" Wahshi replied "Yes, Hamza killed Tuaima bin ʿAdi bin Al-Khaiyar at Badr (battle) so my master, Jubair bin Mutʿim said to me, 'If you kill Hamza in revenge for my uncle, then you will be set free." When the people set out (for the battle of Uhud) in the year of 'Ainain ..'Ainain is a mountain near the mountain of Uhud, and between it and Uhud there is a valley.. I went out with the people for the battle. When the army aligned for the fight, Siba' came out and said, 'Is there any (Muslim) to accept my challenge to a duel?' Hamza bin ʿAbdul Muttalib came out and said, 'O Siba'. O Ibn Um Anmar, the one who circumcises other ladies! Do you challenge Allah and His Apostle?' Then Hamza attacked and killed him, causing him to be non-extant like the bygone yesterday. I hid myself under a rock, and when he (i.e. Hamza) came near me, I threw my spear at him, driving it into his umbilicus so that it came out through his buttocks, causing him to die. When all the people returned to Mecca, I too returned with them. I stayed in (Mecca) till Islam spread in it (i.e. Mecca). Then I left for Taif, and when the people (of Taif) sent their messengers to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I was told that the Prophet ﷺ did not harm the messengers; So I too went out with them till I reached Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he saw me, he said, 'Are you Wahshi?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Was it you who killed Hamza?' I replied, 'What happened is what you have been told of.' He said, 'Can you hide your face from me?' So I went out when Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and Musailamah Al-Kadhdhab appeared (claiming to be a prophet). I said, 'I will go out to Musailamah so that I may kill him, and make amends for killing Hamza. So I went out with the people (to fight Musailamah and his followers) and then famous events took place concerning that battle. Suddenly I saw a man (i.e. Musailamah) standing near a gap in a wall. He looked like an ash-colored camel and his hair was dishevelled. So I threw my spear at him, driving it into his chest in between his breasts till it passed out through his shoulders, and then an Ansari man attacked him and struck him on the head with a sword. ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, 'A slave girl on the roof of a house said: Alas! The chief of the believers (i.e. Musailamah) has been killed by a black slave." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4072)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army led by commanders. He said, "Follow Zaid bin Haritha, and if he is martyred, then follow Jafar, and if he is martyred, then follow Abdullah bin Rawaha." Jafar stepped forward and said, "O Messenger of Allah, may I be sacrificed for you, my father and mother! I do not have a strong desire to be chosen over Zaid." The Prophet ﷺ said, "March forth, for you do not know in which matter goodness lies for you."
So they departed and stayed there as long as Allah willed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and commanded the call to prayer to be made for congregational prayer. He said, "Shall I inform you about your army that has fought a battle? They advanced and met the enemy, and Zaid was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness." The people began to pray for him. Then Jafar bin Abu Talib took the flag and fought the enemy until he was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness." The people began to pray for him. After that, Abdullah bin Rawaha took the flag and fought the enemy until he was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness." The people began to pray for him. Then Khalid bin Al-Walid took the flag, even though he was not a commander, but he appointed himself as one. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised both of his hands and said, "O Allah, he is one of Your swords, therefore give him victory." From that day on, Khalid bin Al-Walid was called "the Sword of Allah."

[Machine] I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no one but me and Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib. We stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not leave him. He was riding a gray or perhaps white mule, which was gifted to him by Furwah ibn Nufathah al-Judhami. When the Muslims and the disbelievers met, the Muslims turned their backs while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ charged forward on his mule towards the disbelievers. Al-Abbas and I held the reins of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ mule. He was not turning away or slowing down as he hastened towards the polytheists. Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith held onto the bridle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "O Abbas, call out to the Ashab al-Samurah (the companions of al-Samurah)." I, being a loud-voiced person, called out loudly, "O Ashab al-Samurah!" By Allah, it seemed as if the Muslims had received a jolt when they heard my voice, rushing towards the enemy. The Muslims and the disbelievers clashed in battle, and the Ansar called out, "O Ansar!" The call then only focused on the Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, who responded, "O Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked back at me while riding his mule, as if he was looking for something, until he said, "This is when the pillar is guarded (the Messenger of Allah referred to himself)." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took pebbles and threw them at the faces of the disbelievers, saying, "They are defeated, by the Lord of the Kaaba, they are defeated, by the Lord of the Kaaba." I looked and saw that the battle was taking its natural course. By Allah, the enemy did not appear except as a small group, retreating until Allah defeated them. It seemed as if I could see the Prophet ﷺ riding behind them on his mule.

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a reconnaissance party led by Asim bin Thabit. They set off until they reached a place between Usfan and Mecca called Benu Lihyan, and they followed their tracks with about a hundred men to find some date palms from Madinah. It was said that these dates belonged to the people of Yathrib, so they followed their tracks until they caught up with them. When Asim bin Thabit and his companions caught up with them, they sought refuge in Fadfad. The people surrounded them and said, 'You have a covenant and a pledge with us, that if you come to us, we will not kill any of you.' Asim replied, 'But I will not be a part of an agreement with disbelievers. O Allah, inform Your Messenger about us.' So they fought them in their homes until they killed Asim and seven others. Only Hubayb bin Adi and Zaid bin Adhina remained. They made a deal with them that if they surrender, they will be safe. But when they felt secure, they tied them up with their own bowstrings. The third man with them said, 'This is the first betrayal.' He refused to accompany them, so they killed him. As for me, I considered them to be a good example, so they cut off my head. Then they took Hubayb bin Adi and Zaid bin Adhina to Mecca and sold them. Hubayb bin Harith bin Amir bought Hubayb bin Adi, and he was killed on the Day of Badr. He kept me as a captive until they gathered to kill me. But Moses borrowed me from one of the daughters of Harith, who was nursing a baby, and she left him with her on her thigh while Moses had a knife in his hand. When I saw him, I panicked and said, 'Did you intend to kill him?' He said, 'If Allah wills.' I said, 'I have never seen a captive better than Hubayb. I saw him eating from a ripe grape when there were no fruits in Mecca at that time. And indeed, he was bound with iron chains. He had nothing except what Allah provided for him.' Then they took him out of the sanctuary to kill him, and he said, 'Leave me to pray two Rak'ahs.' So he performed the prayer, and then he said, 'If it were not for the fact that you see that I have a fear of death, I would have prolonged the prayer. I was the first to perform two Rak'ahs during the time of being killed.' Then he said..."
