"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Abu Bakr and 'Umar are the leaders of the mature people of Paradise, the first and the last, except for the Prophets and the Messengers.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 100)

[Machine] "O Commander of the Believers, the weight of my deception has become heavy upon me, so speak to him and lighten my burden." Umar said to him, "Fear Allah and be good to your master." The servant became angry and said, "The people have enough of your fairness, aside from me." He then plotted to kill him and made a dagger with two heads and named it. He then went to Hurmuzan and said, "What do you think of this?" He replied, "With this, you will not strike anyone except that you kill them."

[Machine] Aisha said, "Abu Bakr sought permission from the Prophet ﷺ while I was with him in a single cot. The Prophet granted him permission and he fulfilled his need while the Prophet remained in that state on the cot. Then Abu Bakr left and Umar ibn Al-Khattab sought permission from him and he granted him permission. Umar fulfilled his need while the Prophet remained in that state on the cot. Then Uthman ibn Affan sought permission from him and he fixed his clothes and sat down. He fulfilled his need and then left. Aisha said, "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr sought permission from you and fulfilled his need while you were in that state. Then Umar sought permission from you and fulfilled his need while you were in that state. Then Uthman sought permission from you and you fixed your clothes.' The Prophet said, 'O Aisha, Uthman is a modest man, and if I had given him permission in that state, I feared that he would not fulfill his need.'"

Messenger of Allah ﷺ was lying in the bed in my apartment with his thigh uncovered and Abu Bakr sought permission to enter. It was given to him and he conversed in the same very state (the Prophet's thigh or shank uncovered). Then ʿUmar sought permission for entering and it was given to him and he conversed in that very state. Then ʿUthman sought permission to enter; Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and he set right his clothes. Muhammad (one of the narrators) said: I do not say that it happened on the same day. He (ʿUthman) then entered and conversed and as he went out, ʿAisha said: Abu Bakr entered and you did not stir and did not observe much care (in arranging your clothes), then ʿUmar entered and you did not stir and did not arrange your clothes, then ʿUthman entered and you got up and set your clothes right, so he ﷺ said: Should I not show modesty to one whom even the Angels show modesty. (Using translation from Muslim 2401)

The prophet of Allah ﷺ ascended Uhud, and Abu Bakr, ’Umar and 'Uthman followed him. It began to shake with them. The prophet of Allah ﷺ struck it with his foot and said: Be still, for only a prophet, an ever-truthful and two martyrs are on you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4651)

[Machine] Who was in charge the day the two armies met? He said, "Yes." The man said, "Allah is the greatest," and then he left. Ibn Umar was asked, "What did you do? Let this man go and inform the people that you belittled Uthman." He said, "Bring him back to me." When he came, he said, "Do you remember what you asked me about?" He said, "I asked you if Uthman participated in the Battle of Badr." I said, "No." He said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him on the day of Badr because he had a need for him and he struck him with an arrow." And he said, "And I asked you if you witnessed the pledge of Ridwan." I said, "No." He said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him on a mission and then he struck his hand with his own hand and said, 'Which of these two hands is better, the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or the hand of Uthman?'" He said, "And I asked you if he was in charge the day the two armies met." I said, "Yes." He said, "Indeed, Allah says, 'Satan made them slip because of some of what they earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.' Go and give it your utmost effort."

Open it for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise and, lo, it was Abu Bakr. I opened (the gate) for him and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then another person asked for the door to be opened, whereupon he said: Open it and give him the glad tidings of Piradise. He said: I went away and, lo, it was 'Umar. I opened it for him and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then still another man asked for the door to be opened, and thereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ said: Open it and give him the glad tidings of Paradise after a trial would afflict him. I went and, lo, it was 'Uthman b. 'Affan. 1 opened the door and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise and informed him (what the Prophet had said). Thereupon he said: O Allah, grant me steadfastness. Last night a good man had a vision in which Abu Bakr seemed to be joined to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ‘Umar to Abu Bakr, and ‘Uthman to ‘Umar. Jabir said: When we got up and left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we said: The good man is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that their being joined together means that they are the rulers over this matter with which Allah has sent His Prophet ﷺ. Abu Dawud said: It has been transmitted by Yunus and Shu’aib, but they did not mention ‘Amr b. Aban. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4636)

[Machine] They both used to raid, then they approached me and each of them did not know that his companion had told me about Murrah Al-Bahzi. He said, while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of the roads of Al-Madinah, "How do you deal with a turmoil that is spreading throughout the earth as if it were the sting of a bee?" They said, "What should we do, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Hold onto this and its people." So I hurried until I reached the man and said, "Is this him, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes." And there was 'Uthman bin 'Affan.

She said, 'Once, Hafsah and I were with him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If only we had a man who would narrate to us.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I send for Abu Bakr to come and narrate to us?' She said, 'Then she fell silent.' Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, about the army of distress (Al-'Usrah): "Who will spend something which shall be accepted (by Allah)?" And the people were struggling during difficult times, so I prepared that army?' They said: 'Yes.' Then he said: 'I remind you by Allah. Do you know that no one drank from the well of Rumah but have to pay for it, then I bought it and made it for the rich, the poor, and the wayfarer?' They said: 'O Allah! Yes!'" I saw ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab a few days before he was stabbed in Medina. He was standing with Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman and ʿUthman bin Hunaif to whom he said, "What have you done? Do you think that you have imposed more taxation on the land (of As-Swad i.e. 'Iraq) than it can bear?" They replied, "We have imposed on it what it can bear because of its great yield." ʿUmar again said, "Check whether you have imposed on the land what it can not bear." They said, "No, (we haven't)." ʿUmar added, "If Allah should keep me alive I will let the widows of Iraq need no men to support them after me." But only four days had elapsed when he was stabbed (to death ). The day he was stabbed, I was standing and there was nobody between me and him (i.e. ʿUmar) except ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas. Whenever ʿUmar passed between the two rows, he would say, "Stand in straight lines." When he saw no defect (in the rows), he would go forward and start the prayer with Takbir. He would recite Surat Yusuf or An-Nahl or the like in the first rakʿa so that the people may have the time to Join the prayer. As soon as he said Takbir, I heard him saying, "The dog has killed or eaten me," at the time he (i.e. the murderer) stabbed him. A non-Arab infidel proceeded on carrying a double-edged knife and stabbing all the persons he passed by on the right and left (till) he stabbed thirteen persons out of whom seven died. When one of the Muslims saw that, he threw a cloak on him. Realizing that he had been captured, the non-Arab infidel killed himself, ʿUmar held the hand of ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf and let him lead the prayer. Those who were standing by the side of ʿUmar saw what I saw, but the people who were in the other parts of the Mosque did not see anything, but they lost the voice of ʿUmar and they were saying, "Subhan Allah! Subhan Allah! (i.e. Glorified be Allah)." ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf led the people a short prayer. When they finished the prayer, ʿUmar said, "O Ibn ʿAbbas! Find out who attacked me." Ibn ʿAbbas kept on looking here and there for a short time and came to say. "The slave of Al Mughira." On that ʿUmar said, "The craftsman?" Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Yes." ʿUmar said, "May Allah curse him. I did not treat him unjustly. All the Praises are for Allah Who has not caused me to die at the hand of a man who claims himself to be a Muslim. No doubt, you and your father (Abbas) used to love to have more non-Arab infidels in Medina." Al-Abbas had the greatest number of slaves. Ibn ʿAbbas said to ʿUmar. "If you wish, we will do." He meant, "If you wish we will kill them." ʿUmar said, "You are mistaken (for you can't kill them) after they have spoken your language, prayed towards your Qibla, and performed Hajj like yours." Then ʿUmar was carried to his house, and we went along with him, and the people were as if they had never suffered a calamity before. Some said, "Do not worry (he will be Alright soon)." Some said, "We are afraid (that he will die)." Then an infusion of dates was brought to him and he drank it but it came out (of the wound) of his belly. Then milk was brought to him and he drank it, and it also came out of his belly. The people realized that he would die. We went to him, and the people came, praising him. A young man came saying, "O chief of the believers! Receive the glad tidings from Allah to you due to your company with Messenger of Allah ﷺ and your superiority in Islam which you know. Then you became the ruler (i.e. Caliph) and you ruled with justice and finally you have been martyred." ʿUmar said, "I wish that all these privileges will counterbalance (my shortcomings) so that I will neither lose nor gain anything." When the young man turned back to leave, his clothes seemed to be touching the ground. ʿUmar said, "Call the young man back to me." (When he came back) ʿUmar said, "O son of my brother! Lift your clothes, for this will keep your clothes clean and save you from the Punishment of your Lord." ʿUmar further said, "O ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar! See how much I am in debt to others." When the debt was checked, it amounted to approximately eighty-six thousand. ʿUmar said, "If the property of ʿUmar's family covers the debt, then pay the debt thereof; otherwise request it from Bani ʿAdi bin Kaʿb, and if that too is not sufficient, ask for it from Quraish tribe, and do not ask for it from any one else, and pay this debt on my behalf." ʿUmar then said (to ʿAbdullah), "Go to ʿAisha (the mother of the believers) and say: "ʿUmar is paying his salutation to you. But don't say: 'The chief of the believers,' because today I am not the chief of the believers. And say: "ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab asks the permission to be buried with his two companions (i.e. the Prophet, and Abu Bakr)." ʿAbdullah greeted ʿAisha and asked for the permission for entering, and then entered to her and found her sitting and weeping. He said to her, "ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab is paying his salutations to you, and asks the permission to be buried with his two companions." She said, "I had the idea of having this place for myself, but today I prefer ʿUmar to myself." When he returned it was said (to ʿUmar), "ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar has come." ʿUmar said, "Make me sit up." Somebody supported him against his body and ʿUmar asked (ʿAbdullah), "What news do you have?" He said, "O chief of the believers! It is as you wish. She has given the permission." ʿUmar said, "Praise be to Allah, there was nothing more important to me than this. So when I die, take me, and greet ʿAisha and say: "ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab asks the permission (to be buried with the Prophet ﷺ ), and if she gives the permission, bury me there, and if she refuses, then take me to the grave-yard of the Muslims." Then Hafsa (the mother of the believers) came with many other women walking with her. When we saw her, we went away. She went in (to ʿUmar) and wept there for sometime. When the men asked for permission to enter, she went into another place, and we heard her weeping inside. The people said (to ʿUmar), "O chief of the believers! Appoint a successor." ʿUmar said, "I do not find anyone more suitable for the job than the following persons or group whom Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been pleased with before he died." Then ʿUmar mentioned ʿAli, ʿUthman, AzZubair, Talha, Saʿd and ʿAbdur-Rahman (bin ʿAuf) and said, "Abdullah bin ʿUmar will be a witness to you, but he will have no share in the rule. His being a witness will compensate him for not sharing the right of ruling. If Saʿd becomes the ruler, it will be alright: otherwise, whoever becomes the ruler should seek his help, as I have not dismissed him because of disability or dishonesty." ʿUmar added, "I recommend that my successor takes care of the early emigrants; to know their rights and protect their honor and sacred things. I also recommend that he be kind to the Ansar who had lived in Medina before the emigrants and Belief had entered their hearts before them. I recommend that the (ruler) should accept the good of the righteous among them and excuse their wrong-doers, and I recommend that he should do good to all the people of the towns (Al-Ansar), as they are the protectors of Islam and the source of wealth and the source of annoyance to the enemy. I also recommend that nothing be taken from them except from their surplus with their consent. I also recommend that he do good to the 'Arab bedouin, as they are the origin of the 'Arabs and the material of Islam. He should take from what is inferior, amongst their properties and distribute that to the poor amongst them. I also recommend him concerning Allah's and His Apostle's protectees (i.e. Dhimmis) to fulfill their contracts and to fight for them and not to overburden them with what is beyond their ability." So when ʿUmar expired, we carried him out and set out walking. ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar greeted (ʿAisha) and said, "ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab asks for the permission." ʿAisha said, "Bring him in." He was brought in and buried beside his two companions. When he was buried, the group (recommended by ʿUmar) held a meeting. Then ʿAbdur-Rahman said, " Reduce the candidates for rulership to three of you." Az-Zubair said, "I give up my right to ʿAli." Talha said, "I give up my right to ʿUthman," Saʿd, 'I give up my right to ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf." ʿAbdur-Rahman then said (to ʿUthman and ʿAli), "Now which of you is willing to give up his right of candidacy to that he may choose the better of the (remaining) two, bearing in mind that Allah and Islam will be his witnesses." So both the sheiks (i.e. ʿUthman and ʿAli) kept silent. ʿAbdur-Rahman said, "Will you both leave this matter to me, and I take Allah as my Witness that I will not choose but the better of you?" They said, "Yes." So ʿAbdur-Rahman took the hand of one of them (i.e. ʿAli) and said, "You are related to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and one of the earliest Muslims as you know well. So I ask you by Allah to promise that if I select you as a ruler you will do justice, and if I select ʿUthman as a ruler you will listen to him and obey him." Then he took the other (i.e. ʿUthman) aside and said the same to him. When ʿAbdur-Rahman secured (their agreement to) this covenant, he said, "O ʿUthman! Raise your hand." So he (i.e. ʿAbdur-Rahman) gave him (i.e. ʿUthman) the solemn pledge, and then ʿAli gave him the pledge of allegiance and then all the (Medina) people gave him the pledge of allegiance. "When he was ill, the Messenger of Allah said: 'I would like to have some of my Companions with me.' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Shall we call Abu Bakr for you?' But he remained silent. We said: 'Shall we call 'Umar for you?' But he remained silent. We said: 'Shall we call 'Uthman for you?' He said: 'Yes.' So 'Uthman came and he spoke to him in private. The Prophet started to speak to him and 'Uthman's expression changed." Qais said: "Abu Sahlah, the freed slave of 'Uthman, narrated to me that on the Day of the House, 'Uthman bin 'Affan said: 'The Messenger of Allah told me what would come to pass and now I am coming to that day.'"In his narration of the Hadith, 'Ali (one of the narrators) said (that he said): "And I am going to bear it with patience." Qais said: "They used to think that that was the Day of the House." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 113)

"We set out as pilgrims and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panis.' So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were 'Ali, Zubayr, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqas. While we were like that, 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, came, wearing a yellow cloak with which he had covered his head. He said: 'Is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I adjure you be the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, din't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the Mirbad [1] of Banu so-and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such and amount, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by the One beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever equips these (men)- meaning the army of Al-'Usrah (Tabuk) - Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness.'" [1] Mirbad: A place for drying dates. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3182)

Fatima complained of the suffering caused to her by the hand mill. Some Captives were brought to the Prophet, she came to him but did not find him at home ʿAisha was present there to whom she told (of her desire for a servant). When the Prophet ﷺ came, Aisha informed him about Fatima's visit. ʿAli added "So the Prophet ﷺ came to us, while we had gone to our bed I wanted to get up but the Prophet ﷺ said, "Remain at your place". Then he sat down between us till I found the coolness of his feet on my chest. Then he said, "Shall I teach you a thing which is better than what you have asked me? When you go to bed, say, 'Allahu-Akbar' thirty-four times, and 'Subhan Allah thirty-three times, and 'Al hamdu-li l-lah thirty-three times for that is better for you both than a servant." Fatimah complained to me about the flour, so I said, "Why don't you go to your father and ask him for a servant?" She went to the Prophet ﷺ to request a servant but did not find him. She returned to her place. When the Prophet ﷺ came, he was wearing a garment with a fringe at the bottom, and when we wore it lengthwise, our feet would extend beyond it, and when we wore it widthwise, our heads and feet would protrude.

The Prophet ﷺ asked Fatimah, "Did you come earlier with a need?" She replied, "No." I said, "Yes, she complained to me about the flour, and I suggested she ask her father for a servant." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Shall I guide you to something better for the two of you than having a servant? When you go to bed, say 'SubhanAllah' (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times."

[Machine] This is Fulan, a prince from the city, inviting you to insult Ali on the pulpit. He said, "What should I say?" He said, "You say to him, Abu Turab." Sahl laughed and said, "By Allah, no one called him Abu Turab except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Ali never had a name dearer to him than this." Ali entered upon Fatimah, then left and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Fatimah. He said, "Where is your cousin?" She said, "He is lying in the mosque." The Prophet ﷺ went out and found his cloak had fallen off his back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped the dust off his back and said, "Sit, Abu Turab." that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an army and he put 'Ali bin Abi Talib in charge of it. He left on the expedition and he entered upon a female slave. So four of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ scolded him, and they made a pact saying: "[If] we meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we will inform him of what 'Ali did." When the Muslims returned from the journey, they would begin with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and give him Salam, then they would go to their homes. So when the expedition arrived, they gave Salam to the Prophet ﷺ, and one of the four stood saying: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you see that 'Ali bin Abi Talib did such and such." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. Then the second one stood and said as he said, and he turned away from him. Then the third stood before him, and said as he said, and he turned away from him. Then the fourth stood and said as they had said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced him, and the anger was visible on his face, he said: "What do you want from 'Ali?! What do you want from 'Ali?! What do you want from 'Ali?! Indeed 'Ali is from me, and I am from him, and he is the ally of every believer after me." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3712)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will give the flag to a man with whose leadership Allah will grant (the Muslim) victory." So the people kept on thinking the whole night as to who would be given the flag. The next morning the people went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and every one of them hoped that he would be given the flag. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Where is ʿAli bin Abi Talib?" The people replied, "He is suffering from eye trouble, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Send for him and bring him to me." So when ʿAli came, the Prophet ﷺ spat in his eyes and invoked good on him, and be became alright as if he had no ailment. The Prophet ﷺ then gave him the flag. ʿAli said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I fight them (i.e. enemy) till they become like us?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Proceed to them steadily till you approach near to them and then invite them to Islam and inform them of their duties towards Allah which Islam prescribes for them, for by Allah, if one man is guided on the right path (i.e. converted to Islam) through you, it would be better for you than (a great number of) red camels." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿThere will emerge some people among whom is a man with a defective arm, or an incomplete arm, or a small arm.ʿ If you could exercise restraint, I would have told you what Allah promised on the lips of Muhammad ﷺ to those who kill them. ‘Abeedah said to ʿAli ؓ Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah; yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah. (Using translation from Aḥmad 735)

[Machine] Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , narrated to me that when the Haruriyyah rebels appeared while he was with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), they said, "There is no ruling except for Allah." Ali said, "This is a truthful statement, but they intend falsehood. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described certain people, and I know the description of those individuals. They claim the truth with their tongues, but it is not permissible for them. He pointed towards his throat, indicating the most hated creation of Allah among them, whose one hand has a black mole resembling a nipple. When Ali killed them, he said, "Look!" They looked but did not find him. Ali said, "Go back, by Allah, I have not lied nor have I been lied to twice or thrice." Then they found him in a ruin, so they brought him until they placed him before Ali. I, Ubaidullah, was present at that moment during their conversation and the words of Ali about them.

[Machine] "When this verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, when you converse privately, then do not converse in sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse in virtue and righteousness. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered' (Al-Mujadila 58:9), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed Ali: 'O Ali, let them give charity before revealing their secrets.' Ali asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, how much should they give?' The Prophet ﷺ responded: 'A dinar.' Ali said: 'They cannot afford it.' The Prophet ﷺ then said: 'Then half a dinar.' Ali replied: 'They cannot afford it either.' The Prophet ﷺ asked: 'Then how much?' Ali said: 'A handful of dates.' The Prophet ﷺ said to Ali: 'Indeed, you are austere.' Then Allah revealed the verse: 'Do you fear to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allah has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakah' (Al-Hashr 59:9). Ali used to say: 'I was the one whose hardship was eased for this Ummah (nation).'"

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The caliphate after me will last for thirty years, then it will become a monarchy." He said, "Hold on to the caliphate of Abu Bakr for two years, and Umar for ten years, and Uthman for twelve years, and Ali for six years." Ali bin Al-Jaad said, "I said to Hammad bin Salamah, the ship of the speaker said to hold on?" He said, "Yes."

[Machine] Abu Bakr came to the Prophet ﷺ and sat in front of him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, you know the advice I have given and my contributions to Islam. And indeed, I… and indeed, I…” The Prophet ﷺ asked, “What is it?” He said, "Marry me to Fatimah." Abu Bakr was silent, so he returned to Umar and said to him, "I have perished and my family has perished." Umar asked, "What is that?" Abu Bakr replied, "I proposed to Fatimah to the Prophet ﷺ , but he rejected me." Umar said, "Wait until I go to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him for the same." Ali and I came to Umar while I was suffering from a nosebleed. They said, "We have come to you on behalf of your cousin with a proposal." Ali woke me up to the matter, so I got up, took off my garment and came to the Prophet ﷺ to sit in front of him. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you know my contributions to Islam and my advice. And indeed, I… and indeed, I..." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is it?" I said, "Marry me to Fatimah." He asked, "Do you have anything?" I said, "My horse and my armor." He said, "You have to keep your horse, but sell your armor." So I sold it for four hundred and eighty dirhams and brought it to him until I placed it in his chamber. He took a handful from it and said, "O Bilal, go out and prepare it (for Fajr prayer)." He also instructed them to prepare a bed for her, covered with a mat and a pillow stuffed with fibers from the date-palm, and said to Ali, "When she comes to you, do not say anything until I come to you." She came with Umm Ayman and they both sat next to the house, and I on the other side. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house and said, "Is my brother here?" Umm Ayman said, "Your brother and you have married his daughter." He said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house and said to Fatimah, "Bring me some water." She got up and brought a water jug from inside the house. He ﷺ took it and rinsed his mouth with it. Then, he said to her, "Come forward." So she moved closer, and he poured water between her breasts and over her head, saying, "O Allah, I seek refuge for her and her progeny from the cursed Satan." Then, he ﷺ said to her, "Turn around." So she turned around and he poured water over her back, saying the same invocation. Then, he ﷺ said, "Bring me more water." Ali said, "By then, I knew what he intended." So, I got up and filled the jug with water, and brought it to him. He took it and rinsed his mouth with it. Then, he said to me, "Come forward." So, I moved closer, and he poured water over my head and between my breasts, saying the same invocation. Then, he ﷺ said, "Turn around."
