Alternatives charitable acts when one is not able to give money

from his father from his grandfather that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The people asked, "O Allah's Prophet! If someone has nothing to give, what will he do?" He said, "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked, "If he cannot find even that?" He replied, "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked, "If he cannot do that?" He replied, "Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds and this will be regarded as charitable deeds."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ قَالَ يَعْمَلُ بِيَدِهِ فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ قَالَ يُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ قَالَ فَلْيَعْمَلْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلْيُمْسِكْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ

Giving of Sadaqa is essential for every Muslim. It was said (to him): What do you say of him who does not find (the means) to do so? He said: Let him work with both his hands, thus doing benefit to himself and give Sadaqa. It was said to him: What about him who does not have (the means) to do so? He said: Then let him assist the needy, the aggrieved. It was said: What do you say of one who cannot even do this? He said: Then he should enjoin what is reputable or what is good. He said: What about him if he cannot do that? He (the Holy Prophet) said: He should then abstain from evil, for verify that is Sadaqa on his behalf.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ قِيلَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ قَالَ يَعْتَمِلُ بِيَدَيْهِ فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ قَالَ قِيلَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ قَالَ يُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالَ قِيلَ لَهُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ قَالَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ أَوِ الْخَيْرِ قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ قَالَ يُمْسِكُ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ

"Every Muslim must give charity." It was said: "What if he cannot find (anything to give)? "He said: "Let him work with his hands and benefit himself and give in charity." It was said: "What if he cannot do that?" He said: "Let him help someone who is in desperate need." It was said: "What if he cannot do that?" He said: "Let him enjoin good." It was said: "What if he cannot do that? He said: "Let him refrain from doing evil, for that is an act of charity."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "On every Muslim there is enjoined (a compulsory) Sadaqa (alms)." They (the people) said, "If one has nothing?' He said, "He should work with his hands so that he may benefit himself and give in charity." They said, "If he cannot work or does not work?" He said, "Then he should help the oppressed unhappy person (by word or action or both)." They said, "If he does not do it?" He said, "Then he should enjoin what is good (or said what is reasonable).' They said, "If he does not do that''' He said, "Then he should refrain from doing evil, for that will be considered for Him as a Sadaqa (charity) . " (Using translation from Bukhārī 6022)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ قَالَ فَيَعْمَلُ بِيَدِهِ فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ قَالَ فَيُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ قَالَ فَيَأْمُرُ بِالْخَيْرِ أَوْ قَالَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ قَالَ فَلْيُمْسِكْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "For every Muslim, there is a charity to be given every day." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if one cannot find something to give?" He said, "Let him work with his hands to benefit himself and give in charity." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if he is unable to do that?" He said, "Let him help someone in need who is struggling." They said, "And what if he is unable to do that?" He said, "Let him command what is good and forbid what is evil." They said, "And what if he is unable to do that?" He said, "Let him refrain from doing evil, for that will be a charity for him." This hadith is reported by Abu Dawood and is not mentioned in the narration of Sulayman in every day, nor is his statement "command what is good and forbid what is evil." It is mentioned in the authentic hadith, as mentioned previously.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ؟ قَالَ لَيَعْتَمِلُ بِيَدِهِ فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ يُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ؟ قَالَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ قَالُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ قَالَ لِيُمْسِكْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ وَلَيْسَ فِي رِوَايَةِ سُلَيْمَانَ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَا قَوْلُهُ وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ كَمَا مَضَى

Sa'id ibn Abi Burda related from his grandfather that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every Muslim owes sadaqa." He said, "What do you think he should do if he cannot find anything to give?" He replied, "He should find work and thus benefit himself and be able to give sadaqa." He said, "What do you think he should do if he cannot or does not do that?" He said, "He should help someone with a great need." He said, "What do you think he should do if he cannot or does not do that?" He replied, "He should command the good." He asked, "What do you think he should do if he cannot or does not do that?" He replied, "He should refrain from evil. That is sadaqa for him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ؟ قَالَ فَلْيَعْمَلْ فَلْيَنْفَعْ نَفْسَهُ وَلْيَتَصَدَّقْ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ لِيُعِنْ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ فَلْيَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ يُمْسِكْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every Muslim must give sadaqa." They said, "And if he does not find anything (to give)?" He replied, "Then he should work his hands, benefit himself and then give sadaqa." They asked, "And if he is unable to or does not do it?" He replied, "Then he should help someone with a great need." They said, "And if he does not do it?" He replied, "Then he should command the good or command the correct." They said, "And if he does not do that?" They said, "He should refrain from evil. That is sadaqa for him."

"عَلى كُلِّ مُسلِم صَدَقَةٌ، قَالُوا: يَا نَبِيَّ الله فَمَنْ لَم يجد؟ قال: يَعمَلُ بيده. فَيَنْفعُ نَفْسهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ" قالُوا: فإِنْ لَم يَستَطع؟ قال: "يُعينُ ذَا الْحَاجَة الْمَلْهُوفِ" قَالُوا: فَإنْ لَم يَستَطع؟ قال: "يَأمُرُ بِالْمَعرُوف" قَال: أرَأَيتَ إِنْ لَم يَفْعَلْ؟ قال "ليُمسكْ عن الشَّرِّ فإِنَّهَا لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ".
