bukhari:3365ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > Abū ʿĀmir ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAmr > Ibrāhīm b. Nāfiʿ > Kathīr b. Kathīr > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

When Abraham had differences with his wife), (because of her jealousy of Hajar, Ishmael's mother), he took Ishmael and his mother and went away. They had a water-skin with them containing some water, Ishmael's mother used to drink water from the water-skin so that her milk would increase for her child. When Abraham reached Mecca, he made her sit under a tree and afterwards returned home. Ishmael's mother followed him, and when they reached Kada', she called him from behind, 'O Abraham! To whom are you leaving us?' He replied, '(I am leaving you) to Allah's (Care).' She said, 'I am satisfied to be with Allah.' She returned to her place and started drinking water from the water-skin, and her milk increased for her child. When the water had all been used up, she said to herself, 'I'd better go and look so that I may see somebody.' She ascended the Safa mountain and looked, hoping to see somebody, but in vain. When she came down to the valley, she ran till she reached the Marwa mountain. She ran to and fro (between the two mountains) many times. They she said to herself, 'i'd better go and see the state of the child,' she went and found it in a state of one on the point of dying. She could not endure to watch it dying and said (to herself), 'If I go and look, I may find somebody.' She went and ascended the Safa mountain and looked for a long while but could not find anybody. Thus she completed seven rounds (of running) between Safa and Marwa. Again she said (to herself), 'I'd better go back and see the state of the child.' But suddenly she heard a voice, and she said to that strange voice, 'Help us if you can offer any help.' Lo! It was Gabriel (who had made the voice). Gabriel hit the earth with his heel like this (Ibn ʿAbbas hit the earth with his heel to Illustrate it), and so the water gushed out. Ishmael's mother was astonished and started digging. (Abu Al-Qasim) (i.e. the Prophet) said, "If she had left the water, (flow naturally without her intervention), it would have been flowing on the surface of the earth.") Ishmael's mother started drinking from the water and her milk increased for her child . Afterwards some people of the tribe of Jurhum, while passing through the bottom of the valley, saw some birds, and that astonished them, and they said, 'Birds can only be found at a place where there is water.' They sent a messenger who searched the place and found the water, and returned to inform them about it. Then they all went to her and said, 'O ishmael's mother! Will you allow us to be with you (or dwell with you)?' (And thus they stayed there.) Later on her boy reached the age of puberty and married a lady from them. Then an idea occurred to Abraham which he disclosed to his wife (Sarah), 'I want to call on my dependents I left (at Mecca).' When he went there, he greeted (Ishmael's wife) and said, 'Where is Ishmael?' She replied, 'He has gone out hunting.' Abraham said (to her), 'When he comes, tell him to change the threshold of his gate.' When he came, she told him the same whereupon Ishmael said to her, 'You are the threshold, so go to your family (i.e. you are divorced).' Again Abraham thought of visiting his dependents whom he had left (at Mecca), and he told his wife (Sarah) of his intentions. Abraham came to Ishmael's house and asked. "Where is Ishmael?" Ishmael's wife replied, "He has gone out hunting," and added, "Will you stay (for some time) and have something to eat and drink?' Abraham asked, 'What is your food and what is your drink?' She replied, 'Our food is meat and our drink is water.' He said, 'O Allah! Bless their meals and their drink." Abu Al-Qa-sim (i.e. Prophet) said, "Because of Abraham's invocation there are blessings (in Mecca)." Once more Abraham thought of visiting his family he had left (at Mecca), so he told his wife (Sarah) of his decision. He went and found Ishmael behind the Zamzam well, mending his arrows. He said, "O Ishmael, Your Lord has ordered me to build a house for Him." Ishmael said, "Obey (the order of) your Lord." Abraham said, "Allah has also ordered me that you should help me therein." Ishmael said, "Then I will do." So, both of them rose and Abraham started building (the Kaʿba) while Ishmael went on handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, "O our Lord ! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." (2.127). When the building became high and the old man (i.e. Abraham) could no longer lift the stones (to such a high position), he stood over the stone of Al- Maqam and Ishmael carried on handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, 'O our Lord! Accept (this service) from us, Verily You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (2.127)

The boy, the king, and the people of the trench

bazzar:1847ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > ʿAffān > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā > Ṣuhayb; Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá al-Ṣanʿānī > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Thābit > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā > Ṣuhayb > al-Nabī ﷺ

[AI] that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

*"There was a king among those who came before you. He handed over a boy of his to a sorcerer, who taught him sorcery. Between the sorcerer and the king there was a monk, and the boy came upon the monk, heard some of his words, and was pleased by his manner and his speech. Whenever he came to the sorcerer, the sorcerer would say: What delayed you? He would say: My family detained me. Then when he went to his family, he would sit with the monk and be late, and when he came to his family, they would beat him. He complained to the monk, who said: When the sorcerer wants to beat you, say: My family detained me; and when your family wants to beat you, say: The sorcerer detained me. While he was like that, one day he came upon a hideous, huge beast that had blocked the people so that they could not pass. He said: Today I will know whether the monk is more beloved to Allah or the sorcerer. He said: O Allah, if the affair of the monk is more beloved to You, more pleasing than the affair of the sorcerer, then kill this beast so that the people may pass. He threw at it, killed it, and the people went on. The monk was informed of that, and he said: You are better than I am, and you will be tested; if you are tested, do not point to me. The boy used to heal the one born blind and the leper.

He said: There was a companion of the king—meaning a man who used to sit with him—who became blind. He heard of him, meaning he heard of the boy, and came to him with many gifts. He said to him: Heal me. He said: I do not heal anyone. If you believe in Allah, I will supplicate Allah, and He will heal you. So he believed, and he supplicated Allah, and He healed him. Then he came to the king—meaning the man whom he used to visit—and sat as he used to sit. So so-and-so said to him: Who restored your sight to you? He said: My Lord. He said: I am your lord. He said: No, rather my Lord is Allah. He said: Do you have a lord besides me? He said: Yes. He continued torturing him until he pointed to the boy. He sent for him and said: Your sorcery has reached the point that you heal the one born blind and the leper. He said: I do not heal anyone; none heals except Allah. He said: Do you have a lord besides me? He said: Yes, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. He also seized him for torture and continued with him until he pointed to the monk. The monk was brought, and he said: Turn back from your religion. He refused, so the saw was placed at the parting of his head until his two halves fell to the ground. He said to the blind man: Turn back from your religion. He refused. He said: So the saw was placed at the parting of his head until his two halves fell to the ground.

Then he said to the boy: Turn back from your religion. He refused. So he sent him with a group to such-and-such mountain and said: When you reach it with him, if he turns back from his religion, otherwise roll him down from its top. They went with him, and when they had ascended the mountain with him, he said: O Allah, suffice me against them however You will. The mountain shook beneath them, and the boy came walking to the king. He said: What happened to your companions? He said: Allah sufficed me against them. Then he sent him with others to the sea and said: If he turns back from his religion—and if not, drown him. They took him out into the deep, and the boy said: O Allah, suffice me against them however You will. They all drowned, and the boy came walking until he entered upon the king. He said: What happened to your companions? He said: Allah sufficed me against them. Then he said to the king: You will not be able to kill me until you do what I command you. If you do what I command you, you will kill me; otherwise, you will not be able to kill me. He said: What is it? He said: Gather the people on one open plain, then crucify me on a trunk, take an arrow from my quiver, and then say: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the boy. If you do that, you will kill me.

He said: So he placed the arrow in the middle of his bow, then shot it, then said: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the boy. The arrow struck his temple, and the boy placed his hand on the place of the arrow and died. The people said: We believe in the Lord of the boy. It was said to the king: Do you see what you feared? By Allah, it has come down upon you; all the people have believed. So he ordered trenches to be dug at the mouths of the streets, and fires were kindled in them. He said: Whoever turns back from his religion, leave him; otherwise, throw him into them. They began plunging into them. Then a woman came with a son of hers whom she was nursing, and it was as if she hesitated to fall into it. The infant said to her: O my mother, be patient, for you are upon the truth."*
