The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. The man went back, and having prayed, he came and greeted the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ after returning his greetings said, "Go back and pray, for you did not pray." On the third time the man said, "(O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!) teach me (how to pray)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque and a person also entered therein and offered prayer, and then came and paid salutation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Mes- senger of Allah ﷺ returned his salutation and said: Go back and pray, for you have not offered the prayer. He again prayed as he had prayed before, and came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon. him) and saluted him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned the salutation and said: Go back and say prayer, for you have not offered the prayer. This (act of repeating the prayer) was done three times. Upon this the person said: By Him Who hast sent you with Truth, whatever better I can do than this, please teach me. He (the Holy Prophet) said: When you get up to pray, recite takbir, and then recite whatever you conveniently can from the Qur'an, then bow down and remain quietly in that position, then raise your- self and stand erect; then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that attitude; then raise yourself and sit quietly; and do that throughout all your prayers.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque, a man also entered it and prayed. He then came and saluted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned the salutation and said to him: Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. The man returned and prayed as he prayed before. He then came to prophet ﷺ and saluted him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “ And upon you be peace. “ Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. He did so three times. Then the man said: By Him who has sent you(as a Prophet) with truth; I cannot do better than this; so teach me. He said: When you get up to pray, utter the takbir(Allah is most great); then recite a convenient portion of the Qur’an; then bow and remain quietly in that position; then sit and remain quietly in that position; then raise yourself and stand erect: then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that position; then sit and remain quietly in that position; then do that throughout all your prayer. Abu Dawud said: Al-Qa’nabi reported this tradition from Sa’id b. Abi Sa’Id on the authority of Abu Hurairah. This version has the wording in the last: When you do this, then your prayer is completed. If you omit anything form this, you omit that much from your prayer. This version also has the wording: when you get up for praying, perform the abulation perfectly.

"One day Messenger of Allah was sitting in the Masjid" Rifa'ah said: "And we were with him. Then what appeared to be a Bedouin man entered to pray, but he performed his Salat in a very brief manner. He then got up and greeted the prophet with Salam. The Prophet said (returning the greeting): 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have no prayed.' So he returned to perform Salat then came and greeted the Prophet with Salam. So he (the Prophet) said (returning the greeting): 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed.' [He did that] two or three times, each time coming to the Prophet, greeted the Prophet with Salam and the Prophet saying: 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed.' - until the people got scared and became very worried that one whose prayer was so brief had not actually prayed. Then in the end the man said: 'Then show me, and teach me, for I am a human who has suffered and is mistaken.' So he said: 'Alright. When you stand for Salat then perform Wudu as Allah ordered you. Then say the Tashahhud, and the Iqamah as well. If you know any Quran then recite it, if not then praise Allah, mention His greatness, and the Tahlil. Then bow such that you are at rest in your bowing, then stand completely, then prostrate completely, then sit such that you are at rest while sitting them stand. When you have done that, then you have completed your Salat, and if you leave out something, then you have made your Salat deficient.' And this was easier on them than the first matter, because if some of this was deficient, It would only reduce the reward of his Salat, it would not have gone entirely. "

[AI] A man entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, so he prayed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to repeat his prayer two or three times. The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, why do I have to repeat my prayer two or three times?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prayer of none of the people is complete until he performs ablution, placing the ablution in its proper places, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), then praises Allah the Almighty and glorifies Him, then recites whatever is easy for him from the Qur'an, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) until he feels relaxation in his joints, then he says 'Samia Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears whoever praises Him), until he is standing straight, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) and prostrates until he feels relaxation in his joints, then he raises his head until he is sitting straight, then he prostrates again until he feels relaxation in his joints. If he does not do this, his prayer is not complete."

A man entered the mosque while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in one side of the mosque. The man prayed, came, and greeted the Prophet. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Wa 'Alaikas Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray as you have not prayed (properly)." The man returned, repeated his prayer, came back and greeted the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wa alaika-s-Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray again as you have not prayed (properly)." The man said at the second or third time, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Kindly teach me how to pray". The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly and then face the Qibla and say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar), and then recite what you know from the Qur'an, and then bow with calmness till you feel at ease then rise from bowing, till you stand straight, and then prostrate calmly (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease and then prostrate with calmness (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease in the sitting position, and do likewise in whole of your prayer." And Abu Usama added, "Till you stand straight." (See Hadith No. 759, Vol.1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 6251)

[AI] A man entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in a corner of the mosque. The man performed his prayers and then came to greet him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Peace be upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." So the man returned and prayed. Then he came to greet him again and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the same thing to him. In the third time, the man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to teach him. He said, "When you stand up for prayer, perform the ablution thoroughly, face the qiblah, and say the takbir. Then recite whatever is easy for you from the Quran. Then bow until you are at ease in the bowing position, then raise your head until you are in a balanced standing position. Then prostrate until you are at ease in the prostration position, then raise yourself until you are at ease in the sitting position. Then prostrate until you are at ease in the prostration position again, then sit until you are at ease in the sitting position. Then do the same in every unit of prayer and prostration." Abu Usamah confirmed this and said, "Yes, that is what Ishaaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzhali reported from Abu Usamah. Another narration from Abu Usamah and another from Ibn Numayr also confirmed this."

[AI] About Abu Usamah, then prostrate until you are calm in prostration, then raise your head until you are sitting in a calm state, then prostrate until you are calm in prostration, then raise your head until you are standing straight, then do this in all of your prayers. Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, through Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Hanei, through Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad, through Ubaidullah ibn Saeed, through Abu Usamah 2767. Abu Abdullah said, and Abu Ahmad Al-Hafiz informed me, through Muhammad ibn Ishaq Al-Thaqafi, through Yusuf ibn Musa, through Abu Usamah Hammad ibn Usamah, through Ubaidullah ibn Umar, who mentioned it in this way, and he said in the end, then raise your head until you are standing straight.

Go back and pray, for you have not prayed until you have done so three times." The man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I do not know anything better than this. Show me and teach me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you get up for prayer, say the Takbir, then recite what is easy for you from the Quran, then bow until you feel at ease in the bowing position, then raise up until you are standing straight, then prostrate until you feel at ease in the prostration position, then raise up until you feel at ease while sitting, then do the same in your entire prayer." When you do that, then you have completed your prayer, and whatever you missed from that, it is just a decrease in your prayer.'"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying in the mosque one day. When the man finished, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah and said, "Peace be upon you. Please tell me, how can I pray better?". The Messenger of Allah replied, "When you stand up to pray, perform the ablution properly and then say the takbeer. When you are standing straight, recite Surah Al-Fatiha, and then recite from the Quran whatever you have with you. Then, bow down until you feel at ease while bowing, and then raise your head until you are standing straight and say 'Allah hears the one who praises Him'. Then, prostrate until you feel at ease while prostrating, and then raise your head until you are sitting straight. Do this in your entire prayer. " (3948)
Narrated Abu Zakariyya and Abu Bakr: Abu Al-Abbas narrated to us, from Baher, who said that it has been recited over Ibn Wahb, that Dawud bin Qais told you that Dawud bin Qais informed him, that his father who is Badri [Muslim fighter in the Battle of Badr] told him, that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah in the mosque. Then, he mentioned the Hadith and the Messenger of Allah said to him, "When you complete your prayer in this way, your prayer is complete, and whatever you have missed is a deficiency in your prayer." Ibn Wahb attributed this story to what has passed, and Yunnus bin Abd al-A'la narrated it to us from Dawud bin Qais, but he went against the chain of narration and mentioned the recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha. (3949)
Narrated Abu Ali Al-Rudhbary, who informed us, that Abu Bakr bin Dasa narrated to me, from Abu Dawud, from Wahb bin Baqiyyah, from Khalid, from Mohammed bin Amr, from Ali bin Yahya bin Khaled, from Rifaa'ah bin Rafi', with the same story, and he said, "When you stand up, then turn towards the Qibla and say the takbeer. Then, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and whatever Allah wills you to recite. When you bow down, place your hands on your knees and straighten your back. When you prostrate, make a space for your prostration. When you raise your head, sit on your left thigh."
