A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Teach me to read the Qur'an, Messenger of Allah. He said: Read three surahs which begin with A.L.R. He said: My age is advanced, my mind has become dull (i.e. memory has grown weak), and my tongue has grown heavy). So he said: Then read three surahs which begin with H.M. He repeated the same words. So he said: Read three surahs which begin with the "Glorification of Allah". But he repeated the same excuse. The man then said: Teach me a comprehensive surah, Messenger of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught him Surah (99). "When the Earth is shaken with her earthquake". When he finished it, the man said: By Him Who sent you with truth, I shall never add anything to it. Then man then went away. The Prophet ﷺ said twice: The man received salvation.

أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ ثَلاَثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الرَّاءِ فَقَالَ كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَاشْتَدَّ قَلْبِي وَغَلُظَ لِسَانِي قَالَ فَاقْرَأْ ثَلاَثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ حم فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ ثَلاَثًا مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقْرِئْنِي سُورَةً جَامِعَةً فَأَقْرَأَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ { إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الأَرْضُ } حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لاَ أَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا أَبَدًا ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَفْلَحَ الرُّوَيْجِلُ مَرَّتَيْنِ

[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Teach me, O Messenger of Allah." He said to him, "Recite three letters from the letter 'Ra'." The man said, "My age has increased, my heart has become hardened, and my tongue has become heavy." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then recite three letters from the letter 'Ha'." The man said the same thing as he did before. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite three phrases of glorification." The man said the same thing again. The man then said, "But recite for me, O Messenger of Allah, a comprehensive Surah that I can recite when the earth shakes, until I finish it." The man then turned and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The man has succeeded, the man has succeeded." Then he called him back and said to him, "I have been commanded to designate the Day of Sacrifice as a festival for this Ummah (Muslim nation)." The man asked, "What if I can only find a meager offering for my son, can I sacrifice it?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but you should trim your hair, trim your nails, shave your pubic hair, and shorten your mustache. That is the completion of your sacrifice before Allah."

أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ لَهُ اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنْ ذَاتِ الر فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَاشْتَدَّ قَلْبِي وَغَلُظَ لِسَانِي قَالَ فَاقْرَأْ مِنْ ذَاتِ حم فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ الْأُولَى فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَلَكِنْ أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ سُورَةً جَامِعَةً فَأَقْرَأَهُ إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْهَا قَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا أَبَدًا ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَفْلَحَ الرُّوَيْجِلُ أَفْلَحَ الرُّوَيْجِلُ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلَيَّ بِهِ فَجَاءَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أُمِرْتُ بِيَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى جَعَلَهُ اللهُ عِيدًا لِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ إِلَّا مَنِيحَةَ ابْنِي أَفَأُضَحِّي بِهَا؟ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ تَأْخُذُ مِنْ شَعْرِكَ وَتُقَلِّمُ أَظْفَارَكَ وَتَقُصُّ شَارِبَكَ وَتَحْلِقُ عَانَتَكَ فَذَلِكَ تَمَامُ أُضْحِيَّتِكَ عِنْدَ اللهِ

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Quran." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Ra'ad." The man said, "I am old, my tongue is heavy, and my heart is hard." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Hamd." The man said, "It is the same for me, but please teach me a comprehensive Surah, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ recited to him the verse, 'When the earth is shaken...' until 'good or evil, shall see it.' The man said, "By the One who has sent you with the truth, I do not care to add to it until I meet Allah, but tell me what good deeds I should do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform the five daily prayers, observe fasting in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, give Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقْرِئْنِي الْقُرْآنَ قَالَ «اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الر» قَالَ الرَّجُلُ كَبُرَ سِنِّي وَثَقُلَ لِسَانِي وَغَلُظَ قَلْبِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ حم» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَلَكِنْ أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سُورَةً جَامِعَةً فَأَقْرَأَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ {إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ} حَتَّى بَلَغَ {مَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ} قَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا أُبَالِي أَنْ لَا أَزِيدَ عَلَيْهَا حَتَّى أَلْقَى اللَّهَ وَلَكِنْ أَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا عَلَيَّ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ أَعْمَلْ مَا أَطَقْتُ الْعَمَلَ قَالَ «الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخُمْسُ وَصِيَامُ رَمَضَانَ وَحَجُّ الْبَيْتِ وَأَدِّ زَكَاةَ مَالِكَ وَمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ»

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me how to recite." He said, "I will teach you from the mothers of the alphabet." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, my tongue is heavy and my liver is harsh." He said, "I will teach you from the R letters." Then he said the same thing. He said, "I will teach you from the mother of the ones who praise Allah." Then he said the same thing. He said, "Recite Surah Al-Jami'ah Al-Fadhah when the earth shakes its earthquake." The Bedouin man said, "It is enough for me." Then he turned away and the Prophet ﷺ called him back and said to him, "I have been commanded to offer the sacrifice. Perform the sacrifice on the Day of Sacrifice." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say if I cannot find anything except for my family's sheep?" He said, "No, but shorten your mustache and trim your nails, for it is from the completion of your sacrifice." The reciter added to his narration, "And shave your pubic hair."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَقْرِئْنِي قَالَ «أُقْرِئُكَ مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الْحَوَامِيمِ» قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ثَقُلَ لِسَانِي وَغَلُظَ كَبِدِي قَالَ «أُقْرِئَكَ مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الر» فَقَالَ لَهُ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ قَالَ «أُقْرِئُكَ مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ» فَقَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ الْأَوَّلِ فَقَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالسُّورَةِ الْجَامِعَةِ الْفَاذَّةِ» فَأَقْرَأَهُ إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا فَقَالَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ حَسْبِي ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَنَادَاهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ بِالْأُضْحِيَةِ فَانْسُكْ نُسْكَةَ يَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ إِلَّا شَاةَ أَهْلِي؟ قَالَ «لَا وَلَكِنِ اقْصُرْ شَارِبَكَ وَقَلِّمْ أَظْفَارَكَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ تَمَامِ أُضْحِيَتِكَ» زَادَ الْمُقْرِئُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ «وَتَحْلِقُ عَانَتَكَ»
