[AI] ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, whenever reinforcements from the people of Yemen came to him, would ask them, “Is there among you Uways ibn ʿĀmir?” until he came upon Uways. He said, “Are you Uways ibn ʿĀmir?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “From Murād, then from Qaran?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “Did you have leprosy and then were cured of it except for the spot the size of a dirham?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “Do you have a mother?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Uways ibn ʿĀmir will come to you with the reinforcements from the people of Yemen, from Murād, then from Qaran. He had leprosy and was cured of it except for a spot the size of a dirham. He has a mother, and he is dutiful to her. If he were to swear an oath by Allah, Allah would fulfill it for him. So if you are able to have him seek forgiveness for you, then do so.’

So he said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” And he sought forgiveness for him. Then ʿUmar said to him, “Where do you intend to go?” He replied, “To Kūfah.” He said, “Shall I not write for you to its governor?” He replied, “Being among the common folk is dearer to me.”

He said: Then in the following year a man from their nobles performed Hajj and met ʿUmar, and he asked him about Uways. He said, “I left him in a shabby home, with little property.” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Uways ibn ʿĀmir will come to you with the reinforcements from the people of Yemen, from Murād, then from Qaran. He had leprosy and was cured of it except for a spot the size of a dirham. He has a mother, and he is dutiful to her. If he were to swear an oath by Allah, Allah would fulfill it for him. So if you are able to have him seek forgiveness for you, then do so.’

So he went to Uways and said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “You have more recently returned from a righteous journey, so seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “You have more recently returned from a righteous journey, so seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “Did you meet ʿUmar?” He replied, “Yes.” So he sought forgiveness for him.

Then the people noticed him, so he went away on his own. Usayr said, “And I clothed him with a cloak, and whenever anyone saw him he would say, ‘Where did Uways get this cloak from?’”

[AI] The people of Kufa came as a delegation to ʿUmar, and among them was a man who used to mock Uways. ʿUmar said, “Is there anyone here from the Qaranis?” So that man came. ʿUmar said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: ‘A man will come to you from Yemen, called Uways. When the people of Yemen came, ‘Umar started asking people in the group, Is there anyone among you from Qaran, until he came to [the tribe of Qaran] and said: Who are you? They said: Qaran. Umar’s reins - or Uwaisʿs reins - fell and one of them picked them up and gave them to the other. ‘Umar recognized him and said: What is your name? He said: I am Uwais, [ʼUmar] said: Do you have a mother? [Uwais] said: Yes. [ʻUmar] said: Did you have any whiteness [leprosy]? He said: Yes, but I prayed to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, and He took it away, except for an area the size of a dirham near my navel, so that I would remember my Lord. ‘Umar said to him: Pray for forgiveness for me. He said: Rather you should pray for forgiveness for me; you are the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʼUmar (e.) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿThe best of the Tabiʿeen will be a man called Uwais who has a mother, and he has some whiteness, then he prayed to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, and He took it away, except for an area the size of a dirham near his navel.” So he prayed for forgiveness for him, then he disappeared in a group of people and no one knew where he ended up. Then he (Uwais) came to Koofah. We used to gather in a circle, remembering Allah, and he would sit with us, and when he spoke of Allah, his words would have an impact on us like that of no one else. And he quoted the hadeeth... It was narrated from Qais or Ibn Qais, a man from Juʿfi, from ʿUmar bin al-Khattab and he mentioned a Hadeeth similar to that of Affan.

Is there amongst you Uwais b. 'Amir? (He continued finding him out) until he met Uwais. He said: Are you Uwais b., Amir? He said: Yes. He said: Are you from the tribe of Qaran? He said: Yes. He (Hadrat) 'Umar (again) said: Did you suffer from leprosy and then you were cured from it but for the space of a dirham? He said: Yes. He ('Umar) said: Is your mother (living)? He said: Yes. He ('Umar) said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There would come to you Uwais b. Amir with the reinforcement from the people of Yemen. (He would be) from Qaran, (the branch) of Murid. He had been suffering from leprosy from which he was cured but for a spot of a dirham. His treatment with his mother would have been excellent. If he were to take an oath in the name of Allah, He would honour that. And if it is possible for you, then do ask him to beg forgiveness for you (from your Lord). So he (Uwais) begged forgiveness for him. Umar said: Where do you intend to go? He said: To Kufa. He ('Umar) said: Let me write a letter for you to its governor, whereupon he (Uwais) said: I love to live amongst the poor people. When it was the next year, a person from among the elite (of Kufa) performed Hajj and he met Umar. He asked him about Uwais. He said: I left him in a state with meagre means of sustenance. (Thereupon) Umar said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: There would come to you Uwais b. 'Amir, of Qaran, a branch (of the tribe) of Murid, along with the reinforcement of the people of Yemen. He had been suffering from leprosy which would have been cured but for the space of a dirham. His treatment with his mother would have been very kind. If he would take an oath in the name of Allah (for something) He would honour it. Ask him to beg forgiveness for you (from Allah) in case it is possible for you. So he came to Uwais and said.: Beg forgiveness (from Allah) for me. He (Uwais) said: You have just come from a sacred journey (Hajj) ; you, therefore, ask forgiveness for me. He (the person who had performed Hajj) said: Ask forgiveness for me (from Allah). He (Uwais again) said: You have just come from the sacred journey, so you ask forgiveness for me. (Uwais further) said: Did you meet Umar? He said: Yes. He (Uwais) then begged forgiveness for him (from Allah). So the people came to know about (the status of religious piety) of Uwais. He went away (from that place). Usair said: His clothing consisted of a mantle, and whosoever saw him said: From where did Uwais get this mantle? (Using translation from Muslim 2542c)

[AI] Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī was a man from Qaran; he was one of the Successors and was from the people of Kūfah. He was afflicted with vitiligo, so he supplicated to God—Exalted and Glorified is He—to remove it from him, and He removed it. Then he said, “O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,” so He left on his body something by which he would remember His favor upon him. He was a man who kept to the main congregational mosque along with some of his companions. He had a cousin who kept close to the authorities and was enamored of them; whenever he saw him with wealthy people he would say, “He is only trying to live off them,” and whenever he saw him with poor people he would say, “He is only deceiving them.” And Uways would say nothing about his cousin except good, except that when he passed by him he would hide himself, for fear of committing a sin because of him.

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb used to ask the delegations that came to him from Kūfah, “Do you know Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” and they would say, “No.” Then a delegation from Kūfah came to him in which was that cousin of his. He said, “Do you know Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” He replied, “He is my cousin, and he is a corrupt, vile man; he has not amounted to anything—how would you know him, O Commander of the Faithful?” ʿUmar said to him, “Woe to you! You are ruined. When you go to him, convey my greetings to him and tell him to come to me.”

When he returned to Kūfah, he did not even take off his travel clothes before going to him. He found him in the mosque, but he did not follow him in prayer. He said to him, “Ask forgiveness for me, O my cousin.” He replied, “May God forgive you, O my cousin.” He said, “And you—may God forgive you, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir. The Commander of the Faithful sends you greetings.” He said, “And who mentioned me to the Commander of the Faithful?” He replied, “He mentioned you and commanded me to deliver this to you—so go to him.” He said, “Hearkening and obedience to the Commander of the Faithful.”

So he went as part of a delegation to ʿUmar and entered upon him. ʿUmar said to him, “Are you Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Are you the one who was afflicted with vitiligo, so you supplicated God—Exalted and Glorified is He—to remove it from you and He removed it, and you said, ‘O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,’ and He left on your body something by which you remember God’s favor upon you?” He said, “How did you know, O Commander of the Faithful? By God, no human being has come to know this.” He said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ informed us that among the Successors there will be a man from Qaran called Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī. He will be afflicted with vitiligo and will supplicate God to remove it, and He will remove it from him. Then he will say, ‘O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,’ and He will leave on his body something by which he remembers His favor upon him. Whoever among you meets him and is able to ask him to seek forgiveness for him, let him do so. So seek forgiveness for me, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir.” He said, “May God forgive you, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said, “And you—may God forgive you, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir.”

When the people heard from ʿUmar what he had related from the Messenger of God ﷺ, one man said, “Seek forgiveness for me,” and another said, “Seek forgiveness for me, O Uways.” When they became many around him, he slipped away and left, and he has not been seen to this hour.

ahmad-zuhd:2017ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar b. Maysarah al-Qawārīrī > Muʿādh b. Hishām from my father > Qatādah > Zurārah b. Abū Awfá > Usayr b. Jābir

[Machine] As the people of Yemen approached, Umar began to gather companions and asked them, "Is there anyone among you from Qaran?" Until a man from Qaran came to him and Umar asked, "Who are you?" They replied, "I am Qaran." Umar then held him by the collar and recognized him by his distinctive appearance. Umar asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Uwais." Umar asked him, "Do you have a mother?" He said, "Yes." Umar asked, "Do you have any white spots on your body?" He replied, "Yes, I prayed to Allah to remove it from my body except for the size of a dirham, so that I may remember my Lord with it." Umar said to him, "Ask forgiveness for me." He replied, "You are more deserving to ask forgiveness for me. You are the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Umar said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The best follower is a man named Uwais Al-Qarni. He has a mother and he has white spots on his body. He supplicated to his Lord, and he was cured except for the size of a dirham on his shin, which he uses to remember his Lord with.'" Umar then requested forgiveness from him. Uwais went among the people, but Umar did not know where he went. Uwais arrived in Kufa and we used to gather in a circle to remember Allah, and he would sit among us. When he mentioned something, it remained fixed in our hearts, and no other speech could take its place. One day, I lost him, so I asked my companion, "What happened to the man who used to join us?" He said, "Who are you referring to?" I asked, "Who is that?" He said, "That is Uwais Al-Qarni." I then found out where he was staying and I went to see him. I said to him, "May Allah have mercy on you, where have you been and why did you leave us?" He replied, "I did not have a garment, so it prevented me from coming to you." I then took off my own garment and threw it to him. He threw it back to me saying, "I delayed wearing it for an hour." Then he said, "If I had taken this garment from you and worn it, my people would have seen me in it, and they would have thought, 'This is the one they accuse of being a self-indulgent.' So I took off my own garment and threw it back to him and said, "Leave until I hear what they say." So he wore the garment and we left together. When he passed by his people's gathering, they said, "Look at this self-indulgent one, he has not stopped with anyone until he deceived him and took his garment." I said to him, "Are you not ashamed? Why did you harm him?" By Allah, I presented it to him and he refused to accept it." Uwais replied, "Delegations from various Arab tribes came to Umar and their leader said to him, 'O Umar bin Khattab, is there anyone among you from Qaran?' Umar asked him, 'Are you their leader?' He replied, 'Yes, I am.' Umar then asked him, 'Do you know a man from Qaran named Uwais who has such and such characteristics?' The leader of the delegation said, 'O Amir-ul-Mu'minin, why do you mention this person and his matters?' Umar said to him, 'May your mother be bereaved of you! I encountered him two or three times.' Then Umar said, 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned him to us, he said, 'A man named Uwais bin 'Amir from Qaran will come to you, and he has such and such characteristics.' When the man came, he did not start with anyone before Umar, so he went to him and asked for forgiveness. Umar asked him, 'What prayer have you made for me?' He replied, 'Umar said such and such to me.' Umar said, 'I am not asking for forgiveness for you until you make three promises.' Uwais asked, 'What are they?' Umar said, 'Do not afflict me with what remains for you, and do not inform anyone about what Umar said to you, and forget the third one.'"

[Machine] While I am on a scorching day at midday on the bank of the Euphrates, I see a man with a thick beard and a repulsive appearance. He is disheveled, and his head is not shaved. He is wearing two garments, one of which I believe is made of wool. He does not wash either of the garments in water, so I assumed that he is the one referred to in the saying, "Our Lord's promise shall come true" [Quran 17:108]. He asked me, "Who guided you to me?" I replied, "Allah guided me to you." He then extended his hand towards me, but I did not see his hand extending towards me. I do not know what hindered it from reaching me, so I wept at what I saw. He then said to me, "How are you, Harim bin Hayyan? How are you, my brother?" I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. How did you know that I am Harim and we have not seen each other before?" He said, "My soul recognized your soul." He then took me by the hand and we both wept. He said to me, "O Harim bin Hayyan, your father Adam has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Nuh has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Ibrahim, the beloved of the Most Merciful, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Musa, the liberator by the grace of the Most Merciful, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Muhammad ﷺ has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Abu Bakr, the Caliph of the Muslims, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, my dear and chosen friend, Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah have mercy on him, has passed away." He said, "May Allah have mercy on you. Umar has not died." He said, "That was towards the end of Umar's caliphate." He then said, "And both you and I are among the deceased. If you have knowledge, O Harim, your father has passed away, either to Paradise or to Hellfire." I said, "Please tell me the information you received from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "I did not hear anything directly from him, but I heard it from those who heard it from him." I said, "Please tell me what you heard from those who heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "I dislike opening this door for myself to be a judge, a mufti, or a preacher. There are other concerns within myself." He said, "Recite to me verses from the Quran." I said, "May Allah bless you," and I recited the verses: "Ha, Meem. By the clear Book. Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night, it is made distinct." [Quran 44:1-4] until I reached the verse: "Except for those whom Allah has mercy upon. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful." [Quran 44:42] He then took a deep sigh and fell unconscious. He said, "Uwais has passed away." Allah has ordained for him to remain in this state as long as He wills. He then regained consciousness and said, "O my brother, I have been in distress ever since I was with these people. Solitude is dearer to me. Do not ask about me after this day. You are always in my thoughts, and if we meet in the afterlife, remember me for I will remember you." I said, "Please make dua for me." He said, "O Allah, my brother claims that he has visited me for Your sake and loved me for Your sake, so unite his affairs for him and admit him into Your abode of peace." He then took the road and we both wept. We did not see each other except in dreams.

[AI] He used to speak in Kūfah and would speak to us; and when he finished his talk he would say, “Disperse,” and his small group would remain, among whom was a man who spoke words such as I did not hear anyone else speak. I came to love him, so I put him forward and said to my companions, “Do you know a man who used to sit with us like this and that?” A man from the people said, “Yes, I know him—that is Uways al-Qaranī.” I said, “Do you know where he lives?” He said, “Yes.” So I went off with him until I knocked, and he came out to me. I said, “My brother, what keeps you from us?” He said, “Nakedness.” His companions used to mock him and harm him. I said, “Take this cloak and wear it.” He said, “Do not do that, for then they will harm me if they see it on me.” I kept at him until he put it on, then he went out to them and they said, “Who do you think has been tricked out of his cloak like this?” So he came and set it down and said, “Do you see?” Usayr said: I went to the gathering and said, “What do you want from this man, when you have harmed him? A man is naked at one time and clothed at another.” And I took them to task with my tongue severely.

Then it came to pass that the people of Kūfah went as a delegation to ʿUmar, and among those who went was a man who used to mock him. ʿUmar said, “Is there here anyone from the Qaranīs?” That man came, and ʿUmar said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ has said, ‘A man will come to you from Yemen who is called Uways. He will leave behind in Yemen none but a mother of his. He had a whiteness, and he supplicated God and He removed it except for something like the place of a dīnār or a dirham. Whoever among you meets him, let him ask him to seek forgiveness for you.’”

He said: He came to us, and I said, “Where are you from?” He said, “From Yemen.” I said, “What is your name?” He said, “Uways.” I said, “Whom did you leave in Yemen?” He said, “A mother of mine.” I said, “Did you have a whiteness, and you supplicated God and He removed it from you?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “Would someone like me seek forgiveness for someone like you, Commander of the Faithful?” So he sought forgiveness for him. I said, “You, my brother, do not leave me.” But he slipped away from me.

Then I was informed that he had come to you in Kūfah. That man who used to mock him began to belittle him, saying, “This is not among us, and we do not know him.” ʿUmar said, “Yes indeed.” The man said, “He is a man as though he lowers his own standing.” He said, “Among us, Commander of the Faithful, is a man called Uways whom we mock.” He said, “Catch up—though I do not think you will catch up.” So that man hurried until he entered upon him before he went to his family. Uways said to him, “This is not your habit—what has come over you?” He said, “I heard ʿUmar say such-and-such about you, so seek forgiveness for me, O Uways.” He said, “I will not do so until you give me your pledge that you will not mock me after this, and that you will not mention to anyone what you heard from ʿUmar.” So he sought forgiveness for him.

Usayr said: I came to him and entered upon him one night and said, “My brother, I see you disappear while we are unaware.” He said, “There was nothing in this by which I could make my way among people, and no servant is recompensed except for his deeds.” Then he slipped away from them and went.

[Machine] I witnessed Ali on the day of Siffin while he was saying, "Who will pledge allegiance to me for death?" or he said, "For fighting?" So ninety-nine people pledged allegiance to him. He then said, "Where is Tammam? Where is the one I was promised?" A man then came to him wearing a turban made of sheep's wool, and pledged allegiance to him for death and killing. It was said that this man was Uwais al-Qarani. He continued to fight until he was killed.

Uwais replied, 'Do not ask a man who has not experienced the evening if it has become morning, and do not ask a man who has not experienced the morning if it has become evening. O brother of Murad, there is no joy remaining for a believer in death. O brother of Murad, the recognition of a believer with the rights of Allah does not leave him with any silver or gold. O brother of Murad, if a believer fulfills the command of Allah, he will have no companion left. By Allah, we command them to do good and forbid them from evil, but they consider us enemies. And verily, among the evildoers, they find support. By Allah, they accuse us of great sins, but that will not prevent me from speaking the truth.' Meeting Uways al-Qarani by the Euphrates and his counsel to remember death

hakim:5726Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Qāsim b. al-Qāsim b. ʿAbdullāh b. Muʿāwiyah al-Sayyārī > Abū al-Muwajjih Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Muwajjih al-Fazārī > ʿAbdān b. ʿUthmān > ʿUbaydullāh b. al-Shumayṭ b. ʿAjlān from his father > Aslam al-ʿIjlī > Abū al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Jarmī > Harim b. Ḥayyān al-ʿAbdī

[AI] I came to Kufa, and I had no concern there except Uways al-Qarani: I searched for him and asked about him until I happened upon him sitting alone on the bank of the Euphrates at midday, performing ablution and washing his garment. I recognized him by the description. There he was: a fleshy man, dark-complexioned, intensely so; hairy, with a shaved head—meaning he had no forelock—thick-bearded, wearing a woolen waist-wrapper and a woolen cloak, without shoes; large-faced, and very awe-inspiring in appearance. I greeted him, and he returned my greeting and looked at me and said, “May God give you life—who are you?” I extended my hand to him to shake his, but he refused to shake my hand and said, “And you—may God give you life.” I said, “May God have mercy on you, O Uways, and forgive you. How are you—may God have mercy on you?” Then jealousy choked me, from my love for him and my tenderness toward him because of what I saw of his condition, until I wept and he wept. Then he said, “And you—may God have mercy on you, O Harim ibn Hayyan. How are you, my brother? Who guided you to me?” I said, “God.” He said, “There is no god but God. Glory be to our Lord: surely the promise of our Lord is to be fulfilled,” when he named me. By God, he had never seen me, nor had I seen him. Then I said, “How did you recognize me, and know my name and my father’s name? For by God I had never seen you before this day.” He said, “The All-Knowing, the All-Aware informed me. My spirit recognized your spirit when my soul spoke to your soul: spirits have breaths like the breaths of the living. The believers recognize one another and converse by God’s Spirit even if they have not met, and even if they have not spoken; they come to know one another, even if lands are distant from them and homes separate them.”

He said: I said, “Tell me a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ that I may memorize from you.” He said, “I did not meet the Messenger of God ﷺ, nor did I have companionship with him. I have seen men who saw him, and what has reached me of his hadith is as what has reached you. I do not like to open this door upon myself—so that I become one who relates traditions, or a judge, or one who gives legal opinions; a person has enough to occupy him, O Harim ibn Hayyan.” He said: I said, “My brother, recite to me verses from the Book of God so I may hear them from you, for I love you for God with a strong love. And supplicate with prayers and give counsel with an admonition that I may preserve from you.” He said: he took my hand on the bank of the Euphrates and said, “I seek refuge in God, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the accursed. In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.” He gasped once, then wept in his place, then said: “My Lord—exalted be His mention—has said, and most rightful of speech is His speech, most truthful of discourse is His discourse, and best of words is His word: {And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them in play; We created them only in truth} [al-Dukhan 39],” until he reached, “{except whom God has mercy upon; indeed He is the Mighty, the Merciful} [al-Dukhan 42].” Then he gasped again and fell silent. I looked at him, thinking he had fainted. Then he said, “O Harim ibn Hayyan, your father has died, and you are soon to die; and Abu Hayyan has died—either to Paradise or to the Fire. Adam has died, and Eve has died, O son of Hayyan; and Noah has died, and Abraham, the intimate friend of the Most Merciful, O son of Hayyan; and Moses, the one spoken to by the Most Merciful, has died, O son of Hayyan; and David, the vicegerent of the Most Merciful, has died, O son of Hayyan; and Muhammad, the Messenger of the Most Merciful, has died, and Abu Bakr, the caliph of the Muslims, has died, O son of Hayyan; and my brother, my chosen one, and my friend, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, has died.” Then he said, “Oh ‘Umar!” May God have mercy on ‘Umar—while ‘Umar at that time was still alive, and that was at the end of his caliphate. He said: I said to him, “May God have mercy on you—‘Umar ibn al-Khattab is still alive.” He said, “Yes, if you understand: you have already understood what I said— I and you are among the dead; it has already been.” Then he invoked blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and made brief supplications. Then he said, “This is my counsel to you, O Harim ibn Hayyan: the Book of God; keeping company with the righteous among the Muslims; and prayer and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ. I have announced death to myself and announced it to you; so keep remembrance of death—do not let it leave you even for a moment. Warn your people when you return to them, and advise all the people of your religion. Strive for your own soul, and beware, beware of separating from the جماعت (the community), lest you separate from your religion without realizing and enter the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.”

Then he said, “O God, this man claims that he loves me for Your sake and has visited me for Your sake. O God, show me his face in Paradise, and admit him to me as a visitor in Your abode, the Abode of Peace. Preserve him so long as he remains in the world, wherever he may be; gather up for him what he has lost; make him content in this world with little; and whatever You give him of this world, make it easy for him; and make him, for what You give him of Your blessing, among the grateful; and reward him with the best reward. I entrust you to God, O Harim ibn Hayyan. Peace be upon you and the mercy of God.”

Then he said to me, “You will not see me after today—may God have mercy on you—for I dislike fame, and solitude is dearer to me, because I am deeply sorrowful and heavily burdened with care so long as I remain alive in this world among these people. Do not ask about me, and do not seek me. Know that you are in my mind even if I do not see you and you do not see me; remember me and pray for me, for I will remember you and pray for you, God willing, exalted is He. Go—here,” until he took this way. He said: I was eager to walk with him for an hour, but he refused, so I parted from him—he weeping and I weeping. He said: I kept looking at his back until he entered one of the alleys. How often I sought him after that and asked about him, yet I found no one who could tell me anything about him. May God have mercy on him and forgive him. No week passed over me except that I saw him in my sleep once or twice—or as he said.

[Machine] I have a friend of mine, and I am in Kufa. Do you have a man you are looking for? I said yes. He said, "This is his ranking, and indeed he is Oways Al-Qarani. I think he will pass by now." He said, so we sat for him, and he passed, and there was a mark on him. He said, "People tread on his heels." He said, "He approaches them and speaks to them about it, but they don't stop. We walked with the people until we entered the mosque in Kufa, and we entered with him. He went to a wall and prayed two Rak'ahs, then he turned his face towards us and said, 'O people, why do you tread on my heels in every way? I am a weak person, and I have needs that I cannot fulfill with you. Do not do that, may Allah have mercy on you. Whoever has any need from me, let him tell me here.'" The man said, and it was 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab who asked a delegation that came to him, "Did someone from his family visit you, like this and like that?" The man said, "People have mentioned you, O Amir al-Muminin, and they did not mention that, as is commonly said. That is not from his mention, what I have told you. The man said, "Oways has taken a covenant and a pledge from the man not to tell anyone else about it." Then he said, "Oways said, 'This majlis (gathering) is attended by three people - a knowledgeable believer, a believer who is not knowledgeable, and a hypocrite. This is like rain that falls from the sky to the earth; it reaches the good and fruitful tree and increases its beauty, freshness, and produce. And it reaches the weak and fruitless tree, and increases its rot and makes its leaves fall. And it reaches the thorns that break and destroy them.'" Then he recited the verse, "And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." [Al-Isra 82] This Qur'an does not sit with anyone except that it either adds or decreases in him. This is the decree of Allah that He has decreed, healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. O Allah, grant me a martyrdom that precedes its pain and its safety precedes its fear, which gives life and sustenance. Then he became silent. The man said, "I walked with him." He asked, "My friend, how do you see the man?" I said, "I have not increased in him except a desire, and I am not one who can leave him." We remained with him, and we did not stay except for a short while until he struck the people again. The commander of the faithful, Ali, was sent, and Oways Al-Qarani was among them. We went out with him and traveled with him, and we would stay with him and descend with him until we reached the presence of the enemy."

[AI] We raided Azerbaijan in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and with us was Uways al-Qaranī. When we returned—meaning, he fell ill among us—we carried him, but he could not hold on and died. So we came to a stop, and there was a grave already dug, water poured out, a shroud, and embalming perfume. We washed him, shrouded him, prayed over him, and buried him. Then some of us said to one another, “If we go back and mark his grave, we can ask forgiveness for him.” So we went back, and there was no grave and no trace of it.
