[Machine] I dressed Owais Al-Qarni in two pieces of fabric from the bareness.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, among my followers there are those who are unable to come to their mosques or places of prayer due to nakedness. Their faith prevents them from asking the people for clothing. Uwais Al-Qarani and Furat bin Hayyan Al-Ajli are among them."

ahmad-zuhd:2008ʿAbdullāh from my father > Hishām b. al-Qāsim > Sulaymān / Ibn al-Mughīrah > Saʿīd al-Jurayrī > Abū Naḍrah > Usayr b. Jābir

[AI] He used to speak in Kūfah and would speak to us; and when he finished his talk he would say, “Disperse,” and his small group would remain, among whom was a man who spoke words such as I did not hear anyone else speak. I came to love him, so I put him forward and said to my companions, “Do you know a man who used to sit with us like this and that?” A man from the people said, “Yes, I know him—that is Uways al-Qaranī.” I said, “Do you know where he lives?” He said, “Yes.” So I went off with him until I knocked, and he came out to me. I said, “My brother, what keeps you from us?” He said, “Nakedness.” His companions used to mock him and harm him. I said, “Take this cloak and wear it.” He said, “Do not do that, for then they will harm me if they see it on me.” I kept at him until he put it on, then he went out to them and they said, “Who do you think has been tricked out of his cloak like this?” So he came and set it down and said, “Do you see?” Usayr said: I went to the gathering and said, “What do you want from this man, when you have harmed him? A man is naked at one time and clothed at another.” And I took them to task with my tongue severely.

Then it came to pass that the people of Kūfah went as a delegation to ʿUmar, and among those who went was a man who used to mock him. ʿUmar said, “Is there here anyone from the Qaranīs?” That man came, and ʿUmar said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ has said, ‘A man will come to you from Yemen who is called Uways. He will leave behind in Yemen none but a mother of his. He had a whiteness, and he supplicated God and He removed it except for something like the place of a dīnār or a dirham. Whoever among you meets him, let him ask him to seek forgiveness for you.’”

He said: He came to us, and I said, “Where are you from?” He said, “From Yemen.” I said, “What is your name?” He said, “Uways.” I said, “Whom did you leave in Yemen?” He said, “A mother of mine.” I said, “Did you have a whiteness, and you supplicated God and He removed it from you?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “Would someone like me seek forgiveness for someone like you, Commander of the Faithful?” So he sought forgiveness for him. I said, “You, my brother, do not leave me.” But he slipped away from me.

Then I was informed that he had come to you in Kūfah. That man who used to mock him began to belittle him, saying, “This is not among us, and we do not know him.” ʿUmar said, “Yes indeed.” The man said, “He is a man as though he lowers his own standing.” He said, “Among us, Commander of the Faithful, is a man called Uways whom we mock.” He said, “Catch up—though I do not think you will catch up.” So that man hurried until he entered upon him before he went to his family. Uways said to him, “This is not your habit—what has come over you?” He said, “I heard ʿUmar say such-and-such about you, so seek forgiveness for me, O Uways.” He said, “I will not do so until you give me your pledge that you will not mock me after this, and that you will not mention to anyone what you heard from ʿUmar.” So he sought forgiveness for him.

Usayr said: I came to him and entered upon him one night and said, “My brother, I see you disappear while we are unaware.” He said, “There was nothing in this by which I could make my way among people, and no servant is recompensed except for his deeds.” Then he slipped away from them and went.

[AI] Uways saw a man praying, standing and sitting. He said, “What is the matter with you?” He replied, “I stand to pray, then Satan comes and says, ‘You are showing off, so sit down.’ Then my soul urges me back to prayer, so I stand up again, and he says, ‘You are showing off, so sit down.’” He said, “If you were alone, would you pray this prayer?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “Then pray, for you are not showing off.”

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man will be saved from the Fire through the intercession of a person who is not a prophet; he is more than Rabee'ah and Mudar." Al-Hasan said, "They used to think that he was Uthman or Uwais al-Qarni."

ahmad-zuhd:2011ʿAbdullāh > Hudbah b. Khālid > Mubārak b. Faḍālah > Abū al-Aṣfar > Ṣaʿṣaʿah b. Muʿāwiyah

[AI] Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī was a man from Qaran; he was one of the Successors and was from the people of Kūfah. He was afflicted with vitiligo, so he supplicated to God—Exalted and Glorified is He—to remove it from him, and He removed it. Then he said, “O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,” so He left on his body something by which he would remember His favor upon him. He was a man who kept to the main congregational mosque along with some of his companions. He had a cousin who kept close to the authorities and was enamored of them; whenever he saw him with wealthy people he would say, “He is only trying to live off them,” and whenever he saw him with poor people he would say, “He is only deceiving them.” And Uways would say nothing about his cousin except good, except that when he passed by him he would hide himself, for fear of committing a sin because of him.

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb used to ask the delegations that came to him from Kūfah, “Do you know Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” and they would say, “No.” Then a delegation from Kūfah came to him in which was that cousin of his. He said, “Do you know Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” He replied, “He is my cousin, and he is a corrupt, vile man; he has not amounted to anything—how would you know him, O Commander of the Faithful?” ʿUmar said to him, “Woe to you! You are ruined. When you go to him, convey my greetings to him and tell him to come to me.”

When he returned to Kūfah, he did not even take off his travel clothes before going to him. He found him in the mosque, but he did not follow him in prayer. He said to him, “Ask forgiveness for me, O my cousin.” He replied, “May God forgive you, O my cousin.” He said, “And you—may God forgive you, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir. The Commander of the Faithful sends you greetings.” He said, “And who mentioned me to the Commander of the Faithful?” He replied, “He mentioned you and commanded me to deliver this to you—so go to him.” He said, “Hearkening and obedience to the Commander of the Faithful.”

So he went as part of a delegation to ʿUmar and entered upon him. ʿUmar said to him, “Are you Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Are you the one who was afflicted with vitiligo, so you supplicated God—Exalted and Glorified is He—to remove it from you and He removed it, and you said, ‘O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,’ and He left on your body something by which you remember God’s favor upon you?” He said, “How did you know, O Commander of the Faithful? By God, no human being has come to know this.” He said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ informed us that among the Successors there will be a man from Qaran called Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī. He will be afflicted with vitiligo and will supplicate God to remove it, and He will remove it from him. Then he will say, ‘O God, leave for me on my body something by which I may remember Your favor upon me,’ and He will leave on his body something by which he remembers His favor upon him. Whoever among you meets him and is able to ask him to seek forgiveness for him, let him do so. So seek forgiveness for me, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir.” He said, “May God forgive you, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said, “And you—may God forgive you, O Uways ibn ʿĀmir.”

When the people heard from ʿUmar what he had related from the Messenger of God ﷺ, one man said, “Seek forgiveness for me,” and another said, “Seek forgiveness for me, O Uways.” When they became many around him, he slipped away and left, and he has not been seen to this hour.

Hisham said, "Hawshab informed me that Al-Hasan said it was Uwais Al-Qarni." Abu Bakr said, "I asked a man from the people of Uwais, 'How did this news reach him?' [Machine] While I am on a scorching day at midday on the bank of the Euphrates, I see a man with a thick beard and a repulsive appearance. He is disheveled, and his head is not shaved. He is wearing two garments, one of which I believe is made of wool. He does not wash either of the garments in water, so I assumed that he is the one referred to in the saying, "Our Lord's promise shall come true" [Quran 17:108]. He asked me, "Who guided you to me?" I replied, "Allah guided me to you." He then extended his hand towards me, but I did not see his hand extending towards me. I do not know what hindered it from reaching me, so I wept at what I saw. He then said to me, "How are you, Harim bin Hayyan? How are you, my brother?" I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. How did you know that I am Harim and we have not seen each other before?" He said, "My soul recognized your soul." He then took me by the hand and we both wept. He said to me, "O Harim bin Hayyan, your father Adam has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Nuh has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Ibrahim, the beloved of the Most Merciful, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Musa, the liberator by the grace of the Most Merciful, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Muhammad ﷺ has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, Abu Bakr, the Caliph of the Muslims, has passed away. O Harim bin Hayyan, my dear and chosen friend, Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah have mercy on him, has passed away." He said, "May Allah have mercy on you. Umar has not died." He said, "That was towards the end of Umar's caliphate." He then said, "And both you and I are among the deceased. If you have knowledge, O Harim, your father has passed away, either to Paradise or to Hellfire." I said, "Please tell me the information you received from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "I did not hear anything directly from him, but I heard it from those who heard it from him." I said, "Please tell me what you heard from those who heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "I dislike opening this door for myself to be a judge, a mufti, or a preacher. There are other concerns within myself." He said, "Recite to me verses from the Quran." I said, "May Allah bless you," and I recited the verses: "Ha, Meem. By the clear Book. Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night, it is made distinct." [Quran 44:1-4] until I reached the verse: "Except for those whom Allah has mercy upon. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful." [Quran 44:42] He then took a deep sigh and fell unconscious. He said, "Uwais has passed away." Allah has ordained for him to remain in this state as long as He wills. He then regained consciousness and said, "O my brother, I have been in distress ever since I was with these people. Solitude is dearer to me. Do not ask about me after this day. You are always in my thoughts, and if we meet in the afterlife, remember me for I will remember you." I said, "Please make dua for me." He said, "O Allah, my brother claims that he has visited me for Your sake and loved me for Your sake, so unite his affairs for him and admit him into Your abode of peace." He then took the road and we both wept. We did not see each other except in dreams.

[AI] We raided Azerbaijan in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and with us was Uways al-Qaranī. When we returned—meaning, he fell ill among us—we carried him, but he could not hold on and died. So we came to a stop, and there was a grave already dug, water poured out, a shroud, and embalming perfume. We washed him, shrouded him, prayed over him, and buried him. Then some of us said to one another, “If we go back and mark his grave, we can ask forgiveness for him.” So we went back, and there was no grave and no trace of it.

Is there amongst you Uwais b. 'Amir? (He continued finding him out) until he met Uwais. He said: Are you Uwais b., Amir? He said: Yes. He said: Are you from the tribe of Qaran? He said: Yes. He (Hadrat) 'Umar (again) said: Did you suffer from leprosy and then you were cured from it but for the space of a dirham? He said: Yes. He ('Umar) said: Is your mother (living)? He said: Yes. He ('Umar) said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There would come to you Uwais b. Amir with the reinforcement from the people of Yemen. (He would be) from Qaran, (the branch) of Murid. He had been suffering from leprosy from which he was cured but for a spot of a dirham. His treatment with his mother would have been excellent. If he were to take an oath in the name of Allah, He would honour that. And if it is possible for you, then do ask him to beg forgiveness for you (from your Lord). So he (Uwais) begged forgiveness for him. Umar said: Where do you intend to go? He said: To Kufa. He ('Umar) said: Let me write a letter for you to its governor, whereupon he (Uwais) said: I love to live amongst the poor people. When it was the next year, a person from among the elite (of Kufa) performed Hajj and he met Umar. He asked him about Uwais. He said: I left him in a state with meagre means of sustenance. (Thereupon) Umar said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: There would come to you Uwais b. 'Amir, of Qaran, a branch (of the tribe) of Murid, along with the reinforcement of the people of Yemen. He had been suffering from leprosy which would have been cured but for the space of a dirham. His treatment with his mother would have been very kind. If he would take an oath in the name of Allah (for something) He would honour it. Ask him to beg forgiveness for you (from Allah) in case it is possible for you. So he came to Uwais and said.: Beg forgiveness (from Allah) for me. He (Uwais) said: You have just come from a sacred journey (Hajj) ; you, therefore, ask forgiveness for me. He (the person who had performed Hajj) said: Ask forgiveness for me (from Allah). He (Uwais again) said: You have just come from the sacred journey, so you ask forgiveness for me. (Uwais further) said: Did you meet Umar? He said: Yes. He (Uwais) then begged forgiveness for him (from Allah). So the people came to know about (the status of religious piety) of Uwais. He went away (from that place). Usair said: His clothing consisted of a mantle, and whosoever saw him said: From where did Uwais get this mantle? (Using translation from Muslim 2542c)
