[AI] We raided Azerbaijan in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and with us was Uways al-Qaranī. When we returned—meaning, he fell ill among us—we carried him, but he could not hold on and died. So we came to a stop, and there was a grave already dug, water poured out, a shroud, and embalming perfume. We washed him, shrouded him, prayed over him, and buried him. Then some of us said to one another, “If we go back and mark his grave, we can ask forgiveness for him.” So we went back, and there was no grave and no trace of it.
