We were in an army with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We got some lizards. I roasted one lizard and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed it before him. He took a stick and counted its fingers. He then said: A group from the children of Isra'il was transformed into an animal of the land, and I do not know which animal it was. He did not eat it nor did he forbid (its eating).

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي جَيْشٍ فَأَصَبْنَا ضِبَابًا قَالَ فَشَوَيْتُ مِنْهَا ضَبًّا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ عُودًا فَعَدَّ بِهِ أَصَابِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لاَ أَدْرِي أَىُّ الدَّوَابِّ هِيَ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَلَمْ يَنْهَ

"We were with the Prophet on a journey. We stopped to camp and the people caught some mastigures. I took a mastigure and grilled it, and brought it to the Prophet. He took a palm stalk, and started counting his fingers with it, and said: 'A nation from among the children of Israel was turned into beasts of the Earth, and I do not know what kind of animals they were, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the people have eaten some of them.' He did not tell them to eat it, and he did not forbid them from eating it."

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَنَزَلْنَا مَنْزِلاً فَأَصَابَ النَّاسُ ضِبَابًا فَأَخَذْتُ ضَبًّا فَشَوَيْتُهُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ عُودًا يَعُدُّ بِهِ أَصَابِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لاَ أَدْرِي أَىُّ الدَّوَابِّ هِيَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ أَكَلُوا مِنْهَا قَالَ فَمَا أَمَرَ بِأَكْلِهَا وَلاَ نَهَى

“We were with the Prophet ﷺ and the people caught a mastigure. They grilled it and ate from it. Then I caught a mastigure so I grilled it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ. كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَصَابَ النَّاسُ ضِبَابًا فَاشْتَوَوْهَا فَأَكَلُوا مِنْهَا فَأَصَبْتُ مِنْهَا ضَبًّا فَشَوَيْتُهُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ جَرِيدَةً فَجَعَلَ يَعُدُّ بِهَا أَصَابِعَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أُمَّةً فِي بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لاَ أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهَا هِيَ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدِ اشْتَوَوْهَا فَأَكَلُوهَا فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَلَمْ يَنْهَ

[AI] "We encountered fog while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in some of his battles. The people started to cook and roast some animals. I took a lizard and roasted it, then I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed it in front of him. He took a stick and began flipping its fingers with it, or he counted its fingers. Then he said, 'Indeed, a nation from the Children of Israel was transformed into animals on Earth, and I don't know which animals they were.' I said, 'Indeed, the people have cooked and roasted them.' He did not eat from it and did not forbid them from it."

اصْطَدْنَا ضِبَابًا وَنَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ مَغَازِيهِ قَالَ فَطَبَخَ النَّاسُ وَشَوَوْا قَالَ فَأَخَذْتُ ضَبًّا فَشَوَيْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَضَعَهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَأَخَذَ عُودًا فَجَعَلَ يُقَلِّبُ بِهِ أَصَابِعَهُ أَوْ يَعُدُّهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لَا أَدْرِي أَيَّ الدَّوَابِّ هِيَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ شَوَوْا قَالَ فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يَنْهَهُمْ عَنْهُ

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ was presented with roasted lizard, so the Prophet ﷺ took a stick and started poking his fingers with it, then he said, 'A nation from the Children of Israel were transformed into animals on earth, and I do not know which animals they were.' He neither ate it nor forbade it."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِضَبٍّ قَدْ شُوِيَ فَأَخَذَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُودًا فَجَعَلَ يَعُدُّ أَصَابِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أُمَّةٌ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لَا أَدْرِي أَيَّ دَوَابَّ هِيَ» فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يَنْهُ عَنْهُ

"عَنْ ثَابتِ بْنِ زَيْد أَوْ يَزِيدَ الأنْصَارِىِّ قَالَ: أَصَبْنَا ضِبَابًا وَنَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَاشْتَواهَا النَّاس وَاشْتَوْيتُ مِنْهَا، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ عُودًا فَعَدَّ

أَصَابعَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إنَّ أُمَّةً مَنْ بَنِى إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَت فِى الأَرْضِ فَلاَ أَدْرِى أَىّ الدَّوَابِّ هِىَ، فَقُلْتُ: إنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ اشْتَوَوْهَا، فَلَمْ يَنْهَ عَنْهَا وَلَمْ يَأكُلْ".
