I was in the house of Maymunah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accompanied by Khalid ibn al-Walid entered. Two roasted long-tailed lizards (dabb) placed on the sticks were brought to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat. Khalid said: I think that you abominate it, Messenger of Allah. He said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought milk, and he drank (it). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: When one of you eats food, he should say: O Allah, bless us in it, and give us food (or nourishment) better than it. When he is given milk to drink he should say: O Allah! bless us in it and give us more of it, for no food or drink satisfies like milk. Abu Dawud said: This is the Musaddad's version.

كُنْتُ فِي بَيْتِ مَيْمُونَةَ فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَمَعَهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَجَاءُوا بِضَبَّيْنِ مَشْوِيَّيْنِ عَلَى ثُمَامَتَيْنِ فَتَبَزَّقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ خَالِدٌ إِخَالُكَ تَقْذُرُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَجَلْ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِلَبَنٍ فَشَرِبَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ وَإِذَا سُقِيَ لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَىْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ إِلاَّ اللَّبَنُ

“Whoever is given food by Allah, let him say: Allahumma barik lana fihi wa arzuqna khairan minhu (O Allah, bless it for us and provide us with something better than it). And whoever is given milk to drink by Allah, let him say: Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu (O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it). For I do not know of any food or drink that suffices, apart from milk.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَطْعَمَهُ اللَّهُ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَارْزُقْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ وَمَنْ سَقَاهُ اللَّهُ لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ فَإِنِّي لاَ أَعْلَمُ مَا يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ إِلاَّ اللَّبَنُ

[AI] I and Khalid bin al-Waleed entered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Maymuna bint al-Harith. She said, "Shall we feed you from a gift that Ummu 'Ufaiq gave us?" He said, "Bring two roasted locusts." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat them out, and Khalid said to him, "It seems that you dislike it?" He said, "Yes." She said, "Shall I give you some milk that she gave us?" He said, "Yes." So a vessel of milk was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank while I was on his right side and Khalid was on his left. He said, "This drink is for you, and if you wish, you can give it to Khalid." I said, "I would not prefer to give something from your leftovers to anyone." He said, "Whoever Allah feeds with food, let him say, 'O Allah, bless us in it and grant us something better than it.' Whoever Allah gives to drink milk, let him say, 'O Allah, bless us in it and increase it for us.' Surely, there is nothing that can suffice in place of food and drink, except milk."

دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وخَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ فَقَالَتْ أَلا نُطْعِمُكُمْ مِنْ هَدِيَّةٍ أَهْدَتْهَا لَنَا أُمُّ عُفَيْقٍ ؟ قَالَ فَجِيءَ بِضَبَّيْنِ مَشْوِيَّيْنِ فَتَبَزَّقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُخَالِدٌ كَأَنَّكَ تَقْذَرُهُ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ قَالَتْ أَلا أُسْقِيكُمْ مِنْ لَبَنٍ أَهْدَتْهُ لَنَا؟ فَقَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَجِيءَ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ لَبَنٍ فَشَرِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَخَالِدٌ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ فَقَالَ لِي الشَّرْبَةُ لَكَ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ آثَرْتَ بِهَا خَالِدًا فَقُلْتُ مَا كُنْتُ لِأُوثِرَ بِسُؤْرِكَ عَلَيَّ أَحَدًا فَقَالَ مَنْ أَطْعَمَهُ اللهُ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلْ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ وَمَنْ سَقَاهُ اللهُ لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلْ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مَكَانَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ غَيْرَ اللَّبَنِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is fed by Allah, let him say, 'O Allah, feed us better than this.' And whoever is given milk by Allah, let him say, 'O Allah, bless it for us and increase it for us, for there is nothing that can replace food and drink other than milk.'" [116] 10046 Muhammad ibn Bashshar informed us, he said: Muhammad informed us, he said: Shu'bah informed us, from 'Ali ibn Zaid, he said: I heard 'Umar ibn Abu Haramalah saying, I heard Ibn Abbas saying, the Prophet ﷺ said something similar.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَطْعَمَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلْ اللهُمَّ أَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ وَمَنْ سَقَاهُ اللهُ لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلْ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ غَيْرُ اللَّبَنِ [116] 10046 أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ

"مَا أَعْلَمُ شَرَابًا يُجْزِى مِنَ الطَّعَام إلَّا اللّبَنَ، فَإِذَا شَرَبَهُ أَحَدُكُمْ فَليَقُلْ: اللَهُمَّ بَارِكَ لَنَا فِيهِ، وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ، وَمَنْ أكَلَ مِنكمْ طَعَامًا، يَعْنِي مِن ذَلِكَ الضَّبَ فَليَقُل: اللَهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأطعِمْنَا خَيرا مِنْهُ".

"مَنْ أَطْعَمَه اللهُ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُل: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيه وَأَطْعِمنَا خَيرًا مِنْه، وَمَنْ سَقَاه الله لَبنًا فَليَقُل: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِك لَنَا فِيه وَزِدْنَا مِنْه، فَإِنَّه لَيسَ شَيءٌ ويُجْزِى من الطَّعَامِ والشَّرابِ غَيرَ اللَّبَنِ".
