"Ibn Abbas said: "On the morning of Al-Aqabah, while he was on his mount, the Messenger of Allah said to me: "Pick up (some pebbles) for me." So I picked up some pebbles for him that were the size of date stones or fingertips, and when I placed them in his hand he said: "Like these. And beware of going to extremes in religious matters, for those who came before you were destroyed because of going to extremes in religious matters."

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَهُوَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ هَاتِ الْقُطْ لِي فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ هُنَّ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ فَلَمَّا وَضَعْتُهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ قَالَ بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلاَءِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّينِ فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الْغُلُوُّ فِي الدِّينِ

“On the morning of ‘Aqabah, when he was atop his she-camel, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Pick up some pebbles for me.’ So I picked up seven pebbles for him, suitable for Khadhf.* He began to toss them in his hand, saying: ‘Throw something like these.’ Then he said: ‘O people, beware of exaggeration in religious matters for those who came before you were doomed because of exaggeration in religious matters.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَهُوَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ الْقُطْ لِي حَصًى فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ سَبْعَ حَصَيَاتٍ هُنَّ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ فَجَعَلَ يَنْفُضُهُنَّ فِي كَفِّهِ وَيَقُولُ أَمْثَالَ هَؤُلاَءِ فَارْمُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّينِ فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الْغُلُوُّ فِي الدِّينِ

لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ جَمْعٍ هَلُمَّ الْقُطْ لِي فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ هُنَّ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ فَلَمَّا وَضَعَهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلاءِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّينِ فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْكَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِالْغُلُوِّ فِي الدِّينِ

[AI] Yahya does not know if 'Awf is a servant of Allah or virtuous. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me in the morning of Al-Aqaba while he was standing on his camel, 'Bring me the pebbles.' So I picked up some pebbles that were like the projectiles used during Al-Khath' (a type of stoning). He took them in his hand and said, 'With such pebbles, I have stoned twice.' Then he raised his hand and signaled to Yahya to give them to him. He said, 'Beware of extremism, for those before you were destroyed by extremism in religion."

يَحْيَى لَا يَدْرِي عَوْفٌ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَوِ الْفَضْلُ؟ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ هَاتِ الْقُطْ لِي فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ هُنَّ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ فَوَضَعَهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ فَقَالَ بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلَاءِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ فَأَشَارَ يَحْيَى أَنَّهُ رَفَعَهَا وَقَالَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ؛ فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِالْغُلُوِّ فِي الدِّينِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to me on the morning of the day of sacrifice, "Bring me pebbles." So, I gathered pebbles for him, as many as the pebbles used in al-Kadhf (stoning the Devil during Hajj rituals). I placed them in his hand, and he said, "With these (pebbles), may the likes of these (people) be destroyed." And he warned against extremism, saying, "Beware of extremism in religion, for indeed, what destroyed those who came before you was extremism in religion."

قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ يَوْمِ النَّحْرِ هَاتِ فَالْقُطْ لِي حَصًى فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ مِثْلَ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ فَوَضَعْتُهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ فَقَالَ بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلَاءِ بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلَاءِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الْغُلُوُّ فِي الدِّينِ

"إِيَّاكُمْ وَالغُلُوَّ في الدِّينِ، فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قبْلَكُمْ بالغُلُوِّ في الدِّينِ ".
